President A LETTER FROM THE

Ms. Peggy Slater

We celebrated a major milestone this year - the 175th anniversary of Ursuline Academy education for young women in St. Louis! In 1848, three Ursuline sisters made the long and difficult journey from what was then Austria-Hungary to St. Louis, knowing little of what they would encounter but strongly rooted in their faith and the guidance of St. Angela.

Our theme for the year, “Together with Confidence and Courage,” reflects the example set by these pioneers of education and models of Serviam. Their courage, I imagine, began with their unquestioning belief that God was calling them to do this special work. I suspect that they also came to depend upon one another along the way, confident that together, they could achieve the goals before them.

Similarly, as our students develop the intellectual capacity and leadership skills to positively impact the world, they are also learning to value the unique gifts of each of the women alongside them on the journey.

“Together with Confidence and Courage” was also meant as an invitation - to all of us - to come together and set course for the next 175 years. What is the vision? Where are we headed?

We are striving for continued growth in all areas. The goal set for enrollment in our strategic plan is 400 and we are likely to achieve it as the Class of 2029 is enrolled. Our ability to attract a growing number of families is a testament to the quality of an Ursuline education; the partnership between parents, faculty and staff; a high level of support from alumnae and the desire of our students to make the most of the opportunities before them.

This year we saw growth in the number of donors in several categories and in our scholarship endowment, along with increased participation of parents and alumnae throughout the year. This tells us that Ursuline Academy is headed in a positive direction and positioned to fulfill its mission for many years to come.

The pages of this report are filled with stories of accomplishments made possible by your support. Today’s Bears and the generations who came before them should be very proud of their Ursuline.

With gratitude,

AROUND THE ACADEMY

OUR THEME FOR THIS YEAR, “TOGETHER WITH CONFIDENCE AND COURAGE,” INSPIRES OUR PATH MOVING FORWARD - CONFIDENT IN OUR PURPOSE - SUMMONING THE COURAGE TO DO WHAT’S NEW AND SOMETIMES CHALLENGINGAND DOING IT THE WAY WE DO IT BEST, TOGETHER AS A VIBRANT URSULINE COMMUNITY.

THE 175th SCHOOL YEAR

1.) The history of Ursuline Academy has been woven over the years by countless students, memories, impactful teachers, time-honored traditions, historical moments and more. At the core of the history and mission of Ursuline has been an individualized approach to education, respecting the uniqueness of each student, and preparing the young women who step through the doors to confidently live and lead in a diverse world. This milestone school year began with one of the beloved traditionsCommunity Day- setting the tone for a truly memorable anniversary year.

2 3 4 5

2.) Once they had gathered together, the Ursuline Class of 2024 charged to the front circle drive to welcome the underclassmen to Community Day. The seniors energy was not only contagious, but also a great example of what it means to be a part of the Ursuline community.

3.) Julie Hammer Boresi ’90 and Meredith ’23 dropped off Reagan ’27 for her first official day as a UA Bear! We are always grateful to be able to celebrate our Ursuline legacy through family connections like these!

4.) Within the first couple weeks of school, freshman students found out who their sophomore Big Sisters were in their Mentor groups via some sweet surprises! From cupcakes to confetti, the Big Sisters took inspiration from House Sorting activities to plan their own reveals. With these special memories together we know these girls are sure to make great pairs for years to come!

5.) The last first day of school for the Class of 2024. Members of the senior class gathered around the St. Angela statue to cheer, sing, snap photos and officially kick off their last year at Ursuline Academy.

CELEBRATING 175 YEARS

A

In 1998, as I completed my tenth teaching year at Ursuline, I was honored and humbled to have written a 150th anniversary history of Ursuline Academy in St. Louis, adding to a “tapestry of faith, of service, and of education, begun in previous anniversary texts.”

This retrospective revisited the beginning days of the Ursulines in St. Louis in 1848 as four valiant women traveled from what was then Austria-Hungary to set up a school to educate German youth in what was then a growing city of approximately 62,000 inhabitants, many of them immigrants, The history chronicled many rich and exciting threads in a tapestry woven by an unwavering commitment to leadership, innovation, service, and faith–all

which continue to be hallmarks of an Ursuline education today.

Now, entering my 36th year at Ursuline, I have witnessed the continued growth and development of our school in ways I could not have imagined back in 1998. Since then we have added two new buildings to our campus, O’Hara Hall and Hartnett Hall; we have embraced the opportunities and challenges that technology has brought to our community; we have expanded educational offerings to meet the ever-changing demands of a world that spins, seemingly, more quickly than ever.

Our current course catalog boasts the creation of an Innovation Lab, an eSports room, new courses in areas as diverse as yoga , engineering, fashion design, coding and robotics among many others. We have connected, hosted, and traveled to Ursuline schools in England, Brazil, Japan, Australia, Thailand, South Africa, and France and have continued to witness the Ursuline charism and commitment to education and service that is our mandate as global citizens.

I have also witnessed, humbly and in awe, the Ursuline spirit come alive in my three daughters, all of whom attended Ursuline and graduated since my 1998 history. As different as they all were in terms of academic interests and talents when they entered Ursuline, they have each grown into smart, capable and strong women who are leaders in their communities because of Ursuline Academy. Today they work to house the unhoused, to educate people who are economically disadvantaged, grow their own food and improve their neighborhoods, to minister to the sick and dying. This spirit of Serviam which–truly more than a motto but a vibrant lived value–is the thread that continues to bind and strengthen and grow this tapestry that is Ursuline Academy.

Some snapshots from Ursuline’s community celebration of 175 Years.

1.) During Mass at the 175th Anniversary celebration, the Ursuline Sisters bestowed a blessing over all those in attendance and for the future of Ursuline. 2.) Jessica Pfile Mahan ’03 sports a sweatshirt that reads, “real girls wear plaid,” while attending the 175th/her class reunion. 3.) Sisters Merry Kweiter ’89 and Linda Kweiter Fehrmann ’91 take a photo together at Ursuline’s evening celebration. 4.) To kick off Ursuline’s 175th school year, we hosted a night at the Muny to see “Sister Act” and the evening was a huge success! Attendees had the opportunity to get a backstage tour and enjoy each other’s company sharing in our UA sisterhood. 5.) Our celebration on Oct. 7, 2023 proved to be a memorable gathering of alumnae, families and friends highlighting the incredible legacy of Ursuline Academy in St. Louis. 1 3 4 5 2

6.) In the fall we commemorated Ursuline’s Founder’s Day and the 175th Anniversary. We celebrated the day with an all-school Mass, then had some fun with music, the Bubble Bus, cake and more!

7.) During our all-school Mass in honor of the 175 Anniversary, all students and coworkers received a special pin recognizing the occasion. After they were distributed, the Ursuline school community received a special blessing from the Ursuline Sisters.

8.) On the Feast of St. Ursula we celebrated alumnae moms with current daughters at the Academy, honoring this 175th school year and beginning a new tradition for legacy families. It was a lovely way to celebrate our history and bless our future!

9.) Thanks to the generosity of our Fund-A-Need donors at the spring’s 2023 UA Soirée Auction, Campus Ministry, Counseling, and the Library were all updated with new carpeting, furniture and technology. These updates made our students feel right back at home at the start of the school year, and they have loved being able to utilize these spaces to their fullest potential.

10.) “Anything but a backpack” day was one for the books! A fun day sponsored by the House Captains, the hallways were filled with laundry baskets, to coolers, and everything in between!

11.) This year students were introduced to our 4-legged coworker - Patti! Patti is a wolfoodle who spends one day a week at UA as a campus companion. As a Duo Dog, she completed an 18-week training program to become certified as a Touch Therapy dog over the summer. She is already doing so much for our students, from helping them to tackle their stress to being a friendly resource for smiles and comfort. She has been a great addition to our Ursuline community!

12.) Each Christmas season our students fill white bags that they decorate with toys, treats, and games for the children of the St. Louis City/ County area for Metro Vision Ministries. We are so blessed to be a part of their mission and serve them in this way each year.

13.) The annual Winter Dance Recital was filled with dazzling performances and holiday cheer! We even had a special guest come via sleigh to be a part of the show. Bravo to all our performers on a spectacular evening!

14.) Paige Howard ‘24 received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Model of Justice Award. This award is annually awarded to students who are committed to serving humanity in the broader community.

15.) Olivia Whitlock ‘24 received the Archbishop John L. May Service Award at a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Rozanski. This award is presented annually to one senior from each Catholic high school who shows outstanding leadership, community service, and volunteer achievement.

16.) During S.P.L.A.S.H. Week, we collected items to support four St. Louis non-profit organizations. Students, coworkers, parents and alumnae collected nearly 3,000 items of food for donation to these amazing organizations: St. Vincent de Paul Parish Food Pantry, St. Anthony of Padua Food Pantry, the Pineapple Head Food Foundation (established by Claire Corley ‘27) and the St. Josephine Bahkita Food Pantries.

17.) The digital art and illustration class has been exploring different digital media and art processes in utilizing the completed Innovation Lab.

18.) Our Bearbotics team competed in the St. Louis Regional competition, resulting in a 10th ranking during alliance selection, and were then moved up to be an alliance captain, the 2nd time in the team’s history! Following that, they ended up placing 5th in the playoffs!

19.) As a way to enter into Holy Week, Deacon Tim Michaelree’s sophomore Scriptures class held a Seder Meal, the traditional Passover meal that includes reading, telling stories, eating special foods and drinks, singing, and other Passover traditions. It was a great celebration with many family members in attendance as well.

20.) Félicitations, gratulationes, ¡Felicidades! and congratulations to the 41 students who were inducted into our French, Latin, and Spanish Honor Societies for all their hard work and commitment to studying a second language.

21.) A snapshot of students and coworkers on Spring Break in New Orleans! They had a busy week priming, painting, taping, and putting together kitchen cupboards while serving alongside SBP (formerly the St. Bernard Project), an organization that works to rebuild homes affected by hurricanes.

22.) For the second time in less than ten years, UA students were able to gather on our front campus for a special viewing of a solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. Though not in the path of totality this time, Ursuline Academy St. Louis experienced a 98% eclipsed sun that began around 12:45 p.m. and reached 98% around 2:00 p.m.

23.) Over 40 students were a part of our Spring Music Concert. It was a beautiful showcase composed of students in all grade levels and various instrumental and vocal arrangements.

24.) Congratulations to supercali-truly awesomeexpialidocious cast and crew of Mary Poppins on an incredible Spring production.

25.) Students in Entrepreneurship Class presented their product ideas in a Shark Tank-esque forum for their final projects. Students complied market research to both create and present their products with the hope of attracting the support of coworker “investors.” The class introduced students to the basics of starting a business, including identifying business opportunities, creating a business plan, finance, and the stages of business growth.

26.) For the third year in a row House Coraggio wins the House Crown. It was a tight race, coming down to mere points numerous times throughout the year, but ultimately we love to see each house show up, share their spirit, and support their fellow Bears all year long.

27.) Tessa Kathriner ’24 was featured in the Regional High School Student Show hosted by the Foundry Art Centre. Tessa was awarded “Best in Show” for her mixed media painting “Push it Under the Bed”.

CAREER DAY VALUABLE CONNECTIONS

SHARING VALUABLE CONNECTIONS WITH OUR UA STUDENTS

On Friday, April 12, 2024, the Ursuline Alumnae Association was thrilled to welcome 70+ alumnae onto campus for our biannual student career day.

Kelly Suntrup Stumpe ’12 and Lizz Suntrup St. John ’13, a.k.a. The Car Mom, began the day as our keynote speakers. Together they spoke about how their Ursuline education followed them throughout their careers and how it continues to influence their leadership and personal mission still to this day.

After the keynote session, each of our students attended two different panel sessions led by alumnae professionals in similar fields. This allowed students the opportunity to

hear about several possible career paths within the same field of interest.

This opportunity to engage with alumnae is presented to our students biannually so that every student can participate in two opportunities for career exploration throughout their four years. Additionally, students explore careers through meetings with their counselor, class and school presentations, as well as for making valuable connections through our alumnae network.

“The resources/opportunities I had available to me at Ursuline had a direct impact on my college and career path. I love that I can support those same opportunities now as an alumna and participate in Career Day.”

The five topics/sessions with the highest student interest were: Healthcare, Business, Nursing, Marketing and Law Careers. During each session, our panel of alumnae discussed their unique career paths and then had an open discussion together about the similarities and differences amongst the group. Students were also encouraged to ask questions, often influencing the flow of conversation and allowing for enriching dialogue that got to the heart of career exploration.

“I spoke in the Health Care section as part of my company, Martha’s Hands Home Care Services. I showed the students how we provide entry-level caregiver experiences combined with Shadow Day opportunities for post-high school students. These experiences can either enhance and launch their healthcare career or provide some perspective that healthcare may not be the career for them. Love connecting with the next generation of women leaders!”

The day was a great success, resulting in feedback from students that they learned something new about career paths that they previously weren’t considering. Alumnae were also invited to take part in a networking happy hour after the student event, to continue to foster the valuable connections made during the sessions and contribute to each participant’s professional network.

We are so grateful to our alumnae, the Counseling Department and the Alumnae Association for investing in our student’s futures.

URSULINE, DEAR OLD URSULINE, WE PLEDGE OUR ENDLESS LOVE TODAY. URSULINE, DEAR OLD URSULINE, THOUGH LIFE MAY LEAD US FAR AWAY.

CELEBRATING GENEROSITY

“As a youngster I grew up in Oakland near Ursuline Academy. In the summer we played softball on the fields and in the winter, we ice skated on the pond. The girls who attended Ursuline and the nuns were always nice to us. My aunt, Mildred Maguire Dollinger, graduated from Ursuline in the 1930’s.

With that connection, the convenient location, and my parents’ emphasis on the importance and value of a good education, it was a natural fit for me to join the Ursuline Class of 1969. My sisters, Julie Maguire Jackson (1972), Sally Maguire (1976) and my niece Amanda Jackson Winslow (2005) also graduated from Ursuline. The experience I had at Ursuline Academy gave me confidence and helped further develop my leadership skills. The academic program prepared me for college, and I graduated a semester early.

The quality education I received at Ursuline was a key factor in my professional career first as a teacher and then as an administrator. This culminated in leading Pond Elementary School to two National Blue Ribbon School and three Missouri Gold Star School awards.

In 1988 I married Russ Wick, an architect and project manager. He too was from a working-class family who valued education. Shortly thereafter we began making annual contributions to UA. We believe in the value of a well-rounded education, both academically and socially. We participated in events such as Fall Festival, Trivia Nights, Golf Tournaments and donated to capital campaigns, alumnae giving, contributed to special projects and planned giving.

I regularly visit the campus, making a point to speak with the students, and I can see that girls who attend Ursuline receive a strong education both in liberal arts and STEM. They are taught values needed in today’s world. There are numerous opportunities, in all areas, to find their passion and develop leadership traits. This well- rounded education fosters personal, social and spiritual growth. From firsthand experience I see all the students, and especially those in the work study program, develop social skills that are sometimes forgotten in contemporary society.

In 2023, as we looked to the future, Russ and I, along with my sisters Julie and Sally, established the Maguire Wick Jackson Family Endowed Scholarship at Ursuline. We are committed to make annual contributions to this fund to support teenagers seeking to attend Ursuline Academy. We want to ensure that more deserving young women have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of an Ursuline education.

We hope that other alumnae will be encouraged to support the work and spirit of Ursuline Academy for years to come.”

É E AUCTION RECAP

SECURING THE NEXT 175 YEARS OF URSULINE

On February 3, 2024 the Ursuline community showed up to celebrate an evening of festivities in support of our students. In celebrating the 175th anniversary of Ursuline education to young women in St. Louis this year, we recognized the legacy of all who have come before us and through their generous support, made possible the Ursuline Academy that we know today.

The goal of this year's Fund-a-Need was to grow the Ursuline Academy Scholarship Endowment Fund. With a greater amount of restricted funds set aside and invested for financial assistance grants each year, more of the dollars that come from operating sources can be allocated to annual projects and needs that serve all Bears. And of course, a larger endowment will also allow us to make an Ursuline Academy education accessible to more families who value Catholic education but lack resources.

It continues to be a priority to cultivate the legacy of Ursuline Academy in St. Louis, as we move forward into the next 175 years and beyond. The generosity of those who support UA’s Endowment Fund and all who were in attendance at the UA Soiree Auction have made a immense impact on our both our present and future students.

Ursuline has been such a blessing in my life, and I have learned and continue to learn so much there. I have made so many new friends and been able to experience so many things I had never thought I would be able to before.

THE FOURTH ANNUAL ALUMNAE GIVING CHALLENGE SHARING IN SISTERHOOD AND SUCCESS

Alumnae Giving

We appreciate the generosity of our alumnae. Alumnae support is very meaningful for the future of Ursuline Academy, and their gifts reaffirm their confidence in the school and Ursuline’s mission.

Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, over 970 alumnae (12%) made a gift to Ursuline Academy, totaling over $418,000 to unrestricted and restricted funds.

Our participation in the 4th Annual Girls Schools Unite challenge resulted in some positive results for The Ursuline Fund! We were proud to share that our alumnae community pulled through and brought us up to a 5th place finish, at nearly 5% of UA alumnae making a gift throughout the challenge.

We are so grateful for you all showing up for your fellow Ursuline girls, and making a difference! In just 3 days, 358 alumnae spanning 65 classes raised a total of $17,316.98 for Ursuline!

Plan to participate in the next installment of this friendly giving challenge on May 6-8, 2025, and help Ursuline climb the ranks!
