Governance & Board of Trustees Governance Ursuline Sisters of the Central Province The Ursuline Sisters, as represented by the Provincial Team of the Central Province, serve as Sponsor and Corporate Member, and hold ultimate responsibility for the governance of Ursuline Academy.

There is no more fundamental human need than to feel seen, valued and part of a community. This theme recognizes that the strength of Ursuline Academy is in the variety of students and coworkers who bring an array of ideas, experiences and perspectives every day. “Be You, Be Here, Belong” is an invitation to each member of this community to bring his or her full self each day, and know that there is a place at Ursuline for all.

These pages illustrate the tremendous response of this community to the invitation. I’m happy to report that implementation of the strategic plan, Guiding Our Legacy 2023-2025, has already been impactful. We are now systematically gathering satisfaction data from all major constituencies and the feedback is leading to improvements in career and college exploration as well as activities to build connections among Ursuline parents. Updates to the library, campus ministry and counseling spaces are complete and evolving recruitment strategies are bringing us close to the milestone of having 400 students. And we’re all excited about the “All Paths Lead to You” branding initiative that features updated logos and colors.

A special highlight of this year was a visit from the students of Brescia House School in South Africa. Plans are underway for upcoming years that will have our students visiting Ursuline sisters around the globe in addition to our families serving as hosts again. Development of a global perspective is an important component of the Ursuline experience and we will continue to make is accessible to all students through travel, technology-based classroom experiences, pen pal relationships and global themes embedded throughout the curriculum.

A few years back, as we began discussion of the strategic plan, we asked ourselves what a truly thriving high school campus felt and looked like.

Responses included: exceeding expectations, growing, sustainable, faithfilled, accomplishment and fun. With your generous support, Ursuline Academy is indeed thriving. Thank you!

OUR THEME FOR THIS YEAR, “BE HERE. BE YOU. BELONG.” ENCAPSULATES THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND HOME THAT WE SO OFTEN HEAR ABOUT FROM OUR STUDENTS. URSULINE ACADEMY IS A PLACE FOR EVERYONE AND WE ARE PROUD TO BE BUILDING UPON ST. ANGELA’S FOUNDATION BY LIVING A TRUE CULTURE OF BELONGING.

COMMUNITY DAY

1.) Our annual start to the school year, Community Day is a return to school during which a number of traditions take place. Staples both old and new find their place in this fun, spirited day. As a school community, we celebrate Mass, sort into Houses, run the spirit tunnel, play some UA-Ball, and paint parking spots. It is an official welcome to the freshman class, as well as a celebration of our senior class.

No matter, it is always great because we are together.

2.) The ESports team got to

check out their new arena earlier in the summer and we are excited to see how they use this space this year. The new room came complete with new tech and computers, ready for the team to compete.

3.) During Viaggio days (a.k.a. freshman orientation) the senior leaders welcomed 100+ members of the class of 2026 to high school with games, service, and workshops, and we ended the day with a prayer and blessing over them and their next four years.

4.) A new school year

means a new "Club Try It Out Day!" Over 30+ clubs and organizations gathered in the auditorium for students to learn about and get involved. From ping pong club, to knitting club, and Mock Trial to the sign language club there is a place for everyone!

5.) The Class of 2023 started their first day with a Senior Sunrise. The classmates spent the early morning of their first last day of school together. It was a great way to start an amazing year of memories at the big UA!

6.) The Freshman Class,

(2026), celebrated their Induction on a beautiful fall evening. The ceremony was held on our back campus in front of the statue of St. Angela, a symbol of the excitement of all that is to come for our young women and their families over their next four years. Our new tradition of ringing of the Merici Bell was begun.

Students will ring this bell during their Induction Ceremony, and on the evening of their Bacalorette Mass in their senior year.

7.) Ella Giallanzo ’23 had a piece of art selected for the St. Louis Artists’ Guild’s annual members exhibition.

The theme was all media, and Ella submitted works of photography. The exhibition was held in the fall at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild. Ella went on to attend Savannah College of Art & Design.

Coffee Day” on the Bearista Cafe’s first day of the school year! Students love hopping in line before school and during Activity period to get the ever popular Turtle Frap and more!

10.) Jane Sanchez ’23, Theresa Sanchez ’23, Maddie Brown ’23, Adrianna Lupo ’24 and Ali Tiggard ’23, took part in the Millikin University Musical Festival in Decatur, IL. They each auditioned, and Maddie Brown was selected as one of 11 semi-finalists out of 300+ students from across the Bi-State area.

11.) In the fall, 24 students

were inducted into Ursuline’s National Honors Society chapter! Michelle Ernest Wells, alumna (’94) and current parent gave the address to the Inductees about all the ways to live out the NHS pillars of Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship.

12.) For the 2022 Fall Production, Ursuline Academy proudly presented Steel Magnolias!

Audiences joined M’Lynn, Truvy, Shelby, Ouiser, Clairee, and Annelle for a heartwarming story of friendship, love, and laughter. The Spring Production of "Grease" was met with similarly amazing performances!

14.) Over 500 students,

parents, faculty, and staff assembled 50,160 meals to be sent to Milot, Haiti and distributed to families and patients of the Hôpital Sacré Coeur (HSC). This incredible and joyous act of Serviam was made possible by our Campus Ministry team and Tim Traynor, the Director of Feed Haiti Crudem Foundation, and Cathy Davey, President of the Holy Name Foundation.

15.) The Winter Performing

Arts Assembly was a great showcase of talent, including choral and instrumental arrangements, dance, essays, and acting.

16.) Students and coworkers filled 515 bags for children ages 3-15 years to be distributed by Metro Vision Ministries to the children of the St. Louis City/County area in the hopes of making their Christmas a bit brighter.

7.) This year Ursuline partnered with the Vocational Skill Program (VSP) of the Special School District of St. Louis County to host a Valentine’s Day Dance for their students! From face painting to photobooth fun, to crushing it on the dance floor, we had a blast being able to be a part of this sweet day!

18.) Our Bearbotics team had a great season! The team earned a 4th place finish at this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition St. Louis Regional alongside their team alliance members. They also went on to compete in the Central Missouri Regional Competition, winning their Creativity Award.

Amelia Raible '23, Ursuline's recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Model of Justice Award. This award is annually awarded to students who demonstrate a commitment to serving humanity in the broader community.

Each year, this honor recognizes one outstanding senior from each Catholic high school for their leadership, community service, and volunteer achievement.

Over Spring Break, 11 students and 3 coworkers traveled to New Orleans to serve with SBP, a national disaster recovery and resilience organization, working to rebuild homes affected by hurricanes. They also had the opportunity to serve alongside 6 students from Ursuline Academy in New Orleans.

Natalie Briggs ’25 competed at the District 11 Solo and Ensemble Competition at Parkway Central High School.

23.) This year was the

inaugural UA & St. John Vianney Powderpuff game, benefitting Welcome Neighbor STL! The juniors had a great win over the seniors, and overall it was a great night for both of our communities that we hope to see continue.

24.) The Class of 2024 received their Class Rings at a lovely morning Mass with their families and senior Big Sisters! Bound to one another as an Ursuline class, and by the bonds of charity, these rings symbolize their participation in service and leadership as they continue to shape the legacy of Ursuline Academy.

25.) This Spring we hosted 13 students from our sister school Brescia House in South Africa! It was an incredible two weeks spending time both inside and outside of the classroom and touring around St. Louis sites from the Arch to the Mississippi River. We are so grateful that our students are able to experience our global Ursuline community.

26.) A group of students had the opportunity to participate in a STEM construction workshop hosted by McCarthy Building Companies and Cannon Design at the Barnes-Jewish patient care tower construction site.

Our students, along with students from Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls worked together to create water-tight roofs for structures and to learn more about the world of construction. In addition, they also got to hear from a panel of design and construction professionals on how the challenges presented in the workshop are worked through in the field.

27.) Emma Hingle '24 was the first place winner of the Kirkwood Human Rights Commission Essay Contest and she was recognized at a Kirkwood City Council meeting.

28.) Jazmia Brandon '26

was one of 50 local students accepted into the 10th cohort of Washington University's College Prep Program, an immersive learning experience that serves to successfully prepare firstgeneration college students for college life and beyond.

This year was the first full season for our Stunt team, and what a season! The team hosted its very first home scrimmage in its program history. Ursuline Academy is proud to be the first high school in Missouri to have a Stunt team, the fastest-growing sport for female athletes.

This summer, the team even launched a successful summer camp program. Truly a historical year for our Stunt and athletic program. Let's go, Bears!

1.) A third consecutive trip to the Final Four for the Bears Varsity Soccer team! The Ursuline Bears won 3rd place in the MSHSAA Class 3 State Soccer Tournament!

2.) Both our Varsity and

JV Basketball teams had impressive seasons. The Varisty team were the Orchard Farms Tournament Champions, with Evelyn Shane '26 being named the Tournament MVP, and Addie Rhea '23 making the AllTournament Team! The JV team made school history by being the first team to go undefeated at home for the whole season!

3.) Congratulations to Emmie Kinder ’26, who was the MSHSAA Class 1- District 5 State Runner Up in Tennis!

As a freshman, Emmie went 8-4 in singles matches, making her one of the top 16 players in MSHSAA’s Class 1 out of 73 schools in the state.

Varsity Volleyball Team: Class 3 District 3 District Champs!

Ths team grew and came together throughout their season to claim this title for the first time since 2018.

They went on to compete in the Quarterfinal game for the State competition, where they ended their season.

5.) Members of our

Basketball team traveled to Dallas, Texas to play against their fellow Ursuline teams from Dallas, and Dedham, MA in our annual Ursuline Sister School games! It is such a special opportunity to visit and play with fellow Ursuline students from around the country.

6.) Congratulations to the

Ursuline Dance Team who competed in the MDTA State Championship on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Team finished 1st in Lyrical, 2nd in Pom, and 3rd overall for Division 2, plus Hannah Bauman '23 finished 12th for her senior solo.

7.) Congratulations to our 2023 Senior Athlete of the Year, Natalie Druger '23!

A four-year soccer player, Natalie was also named the United Soccer Coaches AllRegion Player for Missouri.

Ursuline's 2023 PostDispatch Scholar-Athlete, Julia Lammert '23. Julia was a four-year Field Hockey and Soccer player, plus she also spent a season on the swim team. The St. Louis PostDispatch Scholar Athlete program honors one student from every area school, who excels in at least one varsity sport and is in the top 25% of their class.

Academy St. Louis hosted the annual Sister Schools Lacrosse tournament. The Ursuline Bears (Dedham, MA), the Ursuline School Koalas (New Rochelle, NY), the Ursuline Raiders (Wilmington, DE), your Ursuline Academy Bears (St. Louis) joined together for a weekend of sisterhood they won't soon forget!

12.) Sr. Mary Ann Dooling donned the Ursa Bear Mascot coustume for the State Soccer send off parade as a surprise to students and spectators alike. She led the crowd in spirit and cheers as we sent off the soccer team to play in the State Final Four.

COMMUNITY, COMFORT, & BELONGING On March 4, we joined together for a well-enjoyed evening of festivities in support of our young women. The gym was transformed, complete with food stations, live music, and tremendous energy.

This year's Fund-a-Need supported enhancing some of our student's favorite spaces: the Library, Counseling Center, and Campus Ministry. Our goal was to raise funds to better equip those spaces for collaborative learning, private study, and social gathering areas. We were thrilled to have the support of our community in reaching our goal, and were able to complete the work of updating these vital spaces, just in time for the new school year.

Students flocked to them from the first day, incorporating their excitement into Freshman Orientation scavenger hunts, and claiming their new seats in their go-to hang out space. Every year the UA Soiree Auction proves to be a true celebration of our Ursuline legacy and community, and we are continuously grateful to those who come out to support the Ursuline mission through their generosity.

Part of the mission of the Ursuline Academy Alumnae Association is to engage its alumnae in the school community through networking, fundraising events, and strengthening the bonds of friendship and mentorship that began within the halls of Ursuline.

With both our alumnae and global connections in action, this year the Alumnae Association provided multiple occasions for students to learn from and engage with alumnae presenters as they spoke about their careers, experiences, and opportunities available to them.

From across the globe to across highway 44, alumnae came and presented to classrooms and our all-school assemblies during our Insieme periods.

At each presentation, students were engaged, took the opportunity to ask great questions, and benefited from hearing from these women in their respective fields.

We are continuously so grateful to have an incredible network of Ursuline alumnae in a variety of fields who share their time, energy, and experience with our current young women.

1.) Alex Heck '07, (Cincinnati) financial advisor for Herzog Financial spoke to our Personal Finance class about money management, loans, and more. 2.) Tori Cichelero '19, senior at Webster University studying political science, spoke to our student body about her experience studying abroad. 3.) Courtney Kovachevich '10, nurse practitioner, spoke to our Women's Health Class. 4.) Theresa Mager '05, live from Leipzig, Germany, spoke with our community about her experience living in Europe and her perspective on the value of exploring global connections. 5.) Claire Nelson '17, fashion marketing associate for Conjetta Designs, spoke to our Fashion Merchandising class about her experience at trade shows, social media and branding, and the importance of internships. 6.) Megan Catlett '18 & Kayla O'Toole '18 spoke about their paths from Ursuline into careers as project engineers at McCarthy Building Companies. 7.) Kristen Carver '12, Live Experience Manager & Matchday Correspondent for St. Louis CITY SC, spoke to students about her career in sports journalism. 8.) Meredith Belrose '17 & Julia Stahlhuth '18 zoomed in live from Rome, and spoke about their experiences playing professional soccer abroad while attending the Rome City Institute to earn a Masters degree.

THE URSULINE CLASS OF 2027

The 2022-2023 admissions cycle was one for the books, culminating in an exciting and energized class of over 100 future Ursuline Bears!

When "Letter Day" arrived it was truly a celebration for each girl! Our future Bears were greeted at home with a celebration package, complete with a red confetti cannon and special Ursuline swag and spirit.

And the fun didn’t stop there. The following day, Ursuline hosted it’s official Celebration Day during which the incoming class was able to gather together, do some Bear Den shopping, and take photos with Ursa Bear. It was a wonderful start of their UA journeys.

The spirit and excitement already felt by these young ladies is a testament to the Ursuline sisterhood.

IN GRATITUDE TO OUR RETIREES At the conclusion of the 22-23 school year, we celebrated and honored five members of our coworker community who completed their educational careers with us.

Ursuline's team of coworkers exhibit amazing passion and care that shines through in everything that they do. Building meaningful connections with their students by honoring each one's unique gifts, they meet their students exactly where they are and create a personalized educational, social and spiritual path for them to take.

The impact they have made on the lives of countless students and our greater Ursuline community are examples of living the teachings of St. Angela.

Mrs. June Greer | 34 Years Mrs. Greer taught physical education and health classes, served as a homeroom advisor and as a beloved coach during her time at Ursuline.

Sr. Mary Ann Dooling | 33 Years Sr. Mary Ann taught numerous theology classes, chaperoned service trips from New Orleans to Chicago, and supported her students on each step of their educational paths.

Mrs. Valerie Elking | 19 Years Mrs. Elking taught math classes, ranging from geometry, precalculus, statistics, and personal finance. Her creative approach fostered a classroom of fun, applied learning, and great memories.

Their roles have spanned classrooms, a variety of subjects, performances, and games, serving as House Deans, coaches, retreat leaders, homeroom teachers, and so much more. We extend our thanks to each of them, for all they've done to enrich the lives of so many young women and for the impact they've made on our Ursuline community.

We are immensely grateful for their dedication and service to the Ursuline mission. We wish them all the best on their next chapters.

Mrs. Kathleen Stinehart | 16 Years A theology teacher, House Dean, and homeroom teacher, Mrs. Stinehart carried the Ursuline mission in all she did.

We celebrated with nearly 300 alumnae from the classes of '62, '67, '72, '77, '82, '87, '92, '97, '02, '07, '12, and '17 and loved toasting to fond memories and looking ahead to the future of Ursuline together! ALUMNAE IN THE ARCHIVES CLASSMATES SERVING THE ACADEMY THROUGH SORTING AND SHARING MEMORIES.

Reunion Weekend is a time in which friends, classmates and sisters share memories and special moments as they return to the halls of UA. Since early this summer, those special memories, moments, and pieces of history have begun to come together, united under the history of Ursuline St. Louis, just as some of our alumnae have united and grown closer together.

Cheryl Laws, Mary Bull Johnson, Jan Dillon, Sarah Downing, and Chris Koslowski from the class of 1970 and Mary Sheridan and Pat Taylor Hornberg from the class of 1966 have been meeting nearly weekly to help categorize and sort through a collection of artifacts and history unique to the Ursuline story.

During the Ursuline Reunion Weekend, they hosted fellow Ursuline students, both past and 28

present, to share in the memories they organized, categorized, and highlighted in the Archive Room.

From four different locations in St. Louis to two mascots, four different skirt patterns, and one sisterhood the legacy of Ursuline Academy has stood proudly as a beautiful blend of history and innovation.

Sorting through pieces of history, photographs, and special moments has taken a considerable amount of time and thoughtfulness, and it has been such a blessing and beautiful process to have these alums come together to commemorate all of where Ursuline has been, and be a part of the path forward.

CELEBRATING

GENEROSITY Sara Thuston Ursuline Class of 2013 Sara Thuston is a Plant Scientist and Educator at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. After attending Ursuline, she went to the University of Missouri on an Evans Scholarship, a full tuition and housing scholarship awarded to deserving golf caddies across the country. There, she earned a Bachelor’s and then Master’s degree in Environmental Science before putting down roots in Orlando. We asked her about her Ursuline experience, and why she chooses to give back to Ursuline today.

Sara, tell us about yourself.

I work where you vacation, at Walt Disney World! I completed a few Professional Internships during my time in college, and after graduating, I knew I wanted to pursue a career with Disney. I work as a Plant Scientist at Epcot’s Land Pavilion, managing our hydroponic greenhouses and growing food for the resorts. I also work on the Education Team, giving tours of our facility as well as working as a Wilderness Explorer educator over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I have the best job in the world!

In my free time, I enjoy reading, gardening, and traveling – I even got to live and work on an organic farm in Norway last summer. I love visiting Saint Louis and return as often as I can to the home I grew up in, right across the street from Ursuline!

How do you feel your Ursuline experience prepared you for college and your career?

There are many ways that Ursuline prepared me, but there is one highlight that really stands out. I remember the day that I decided that school was going to be important to me. A month into my freshman year, we had a motivational speaker come speak to our freshman class, and this speaker changed the entire trajectory of my academic career. I started working harder, I packed my schedule with honors courses, and I graduated from Ursuline with enough college credit to begin as a sophomore at Mizzou.

This is where my good work ethic was cultivated.

Ursuline provided me with a positive learning environment where I always felt supported and challenged. There was a real sense of community which has helped me to foster community wherever I go. I feel that I achieved so much personal growth during my time at Ursuline. I was involved in many sports, clubs, and organizations, which really prepared me for college and beyond. But without that motivational speaker my freshman year, I am not sure that I would be where I am today.

Why is financially supporting Ursuline important to you?

Giving back to Ursuline has been important to me since I was a freshman.

As a student, I gave my time as an Ambassador, Viaggio, and volunteer for as many programs and events that were available to me. As an alumna, I now donate what I can, as often as I can, and I encourage my classmates to do the same. Ursuline gave me so many opportunities and provided me with some of the closest friendships of my life, and I can’t think of a better way to say thank you.

The Distinguished Alumna Award: Presented to an alumna who exemplifies in her public and private life the Christian ideals and standards of Ursuline, for distinguished service in her profession or to her community or to Ursuline Academy.

The Young Alumna Serviam Award: This annual award honors an outstanding alumna who, through her service, leadership and achievement, embodies the Serviam spirit of an Ursuline Academy education.

Michelle understands Serviam (I will serve) and lives it to the fullest.

She has been dedicated to Ursuline as a student, a generous alumna, a parent and continuously gives her time and talents back to her alma mater.

She has served on the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, Alumnae Association Board, and the Capital Campaign Committee and enriches UA with her ideas, expertise, and leadership.

“It’s like I have to give back in some way because I was lucky enough to be here.”

In addition to the numerous ways she has contributed to the Academy, Michelle has made major contributions to the broader St. Louis community. She founded the firm Segue Partners in 2012 and through her leadership and experience she supports and mentors young entrepreneurs and women in the financial and accounting fields.

Elizabeth is a selfless individual who tirelessly dedicates her time and energy to serving others.

She has always put the needs of others before her own and genuinely embodies the Serviam spirit.

Elizabeth has worked with several organizations like Camp Rainbow, Love Your Melon, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Friends of Kids with Cancer, and Best Buddies International, to name a few.

Elizabeth understands the importance of Serviam as it allows her to have compassion and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those around her.

Through all her amazing accomplishments in her life thus far she continues to lead and be a role model for Ursuline women everywhere.

Our participation in the 3rd Annual Girls Schools Unite challenge resulted in some exciting news! We were so proud to share that our alumnae community pulled through and brought us up to a 5th place finish, at nearly 9% of UA alumnae giving.

That number is even more exciting for us, as it resulted in the highest number of alumnae donors for UA in a giving campaign! We are so grateful for you all showing up for your fellow Ursuline girls, and making a difference! In just 3 days, 583 alumnae spanning 63 classes raised a total of $26,503.22 for our Ursuline legacy!

You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to Ursuline Academy without having to pay income taxes.

Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see its impact on today’s students. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. If you have not yet taken the required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.
