A Letter from the

President Ms. Peggy Slater

It’s been six months since I joined Ursuline Academy as president. I struggle to find words that express my gratitude for the tremendously warm welcome that I have received and the endless support of Ursuline parents, students, alumnae, faculty, and staff. It’s a unique opportunity to witness all that goes into creating the Ursuline experience for our students and then to see these young women grab the opportunities before them with enthusiasm, joy, and genuine care for others.

My attention is focused on three priorities: 1) to assure that current students leave Ursuline well prepared academically and well centered personally and spiritually, 2) to increase the number of young women served by the Ursuline mission, and 3) to generate the funding needed for long term sustainability.

I see exciting changes throughout the building: facility enhancements, technology-based learning, a more user-friendly freshman application process, and so much more. We are continuing to streamline communications and working to articulate our needs for the future.

Ursuline stands on a strong foundation thanks to the responsible management of our finances. The greatest resource, of course, is our people. The gifts among us are substantial. I am truly blessed to be among you and look forward to working with you for the benefit of our students and their potential in our world.

Ursuline Highlights Celebration Day - Class of 2022 An Example of Spirit and Sisterhood After the Christmas season last year, the Class of 2022 had so much more to celebrate!

The first weekend in February is one of our favorite times of year when we celebrate and welcome members of the incoming freshman class to Ursuline Academy. It was only a short while ago when we celebrated with the Class of 2022!

Already halfway through their first year, this class has truly built a lifetime of sisterhood, service, and academic excellence. They are a great reflection of our school spirit. Holding their own against even the senior class, these girls are full of support, excitement, and a strong willingness to get involved.

The love for Ursuline is present in every member of this class, and together they have realized and embraced their ability to be leaders of not only their class, but of Ursuline as well.

Alumnae Spirit Day - Oct. 6, 2018 A New Annual Celebration of Our Alumnae After years of discussion and planning, the Alumnae Association and Academy started a new tradition in 2018: Alumnae Spirit Day. It was a full day of celebrating our Ursuline friendships and reconnecting to campus, teachers, and the Ursuline mission.

The day began with the “Toast for Tradition” luncheon for alums who celebrated 50 or more years since their Ursuline graduation.

Memories, school songs, and many laughs were shared over a champagne toast and coffee from our Bearista Cafe. Tours of campus followed as did our Memorial Mass in the afternoon. Later that evening, live music, food trucks, Narwhal’s Crafted bar, campus tours, spirit shopping, Thelma’s 98th Birthday Bake Sale, and children’s activities filled the night. We were pleased to honor our 2018 Distinguished Alumna, Charlotte Deleste ’90, in a special ceremony. Parties continued throughout Kirkwood for the banner reunion classes and at the Alumnae Spirit Day “After Party” at Kirkwood Station Brewing Company. Those who attended had a lot of fun, and the Alumnae Association is excited to grow the celebrations in 2019.

February 6, 2018 Reagan Becnel ’18 was named as a 2018 National Honorable Mention recipient of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for “Aspirations in Computing” for her demonstrated interest and achievements in computing, proven leadership ability, academic performance, and plans for post-secondary education. She is one of 350 honorable mention recipients who were selected from a pool of over 3600 applicants, and this was Reagan’s second year to achieve this honor.

March 4, 2018 We sure weren’t in Kansas for this wonderful night. Ursuline’s annual Buona Festa Auction this year was a great success, raising a grand total of $374,099, thanks to the generous support of our donors, volunteers, parents, and students. It was a great time in the Emerald City. We are looking forward to another amazing night on Friday, March 1, 2019!

April 20, 2018 Katie Antonacci ’18, a great model of Serviam, was Ursuline’s 2018 recipient of the Archbishop John L. May Service Award! Katie has a passion for serving and sharing her faith with others.

She served her grandmother and other residents at Nazareth Living Center weekly and initiated the creation of care packages for the Ursuline Sisters who moved from Nazareth to St. Agnes Home last summer. She participated in UA’s junior spring break service trip to New Orleans and spent her senior spring break on a mission trip in Mexico with her family. She also was instrumental in creating Project WOAH with the current senior class.

May 18, 2018 Ashley Gangloff Weber ’05 was crowned the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year. “Man & Woman of the Year” is a philanthropic competition to support blood cancer research among a group of motivated and dedicated individuals in communities across the United States.

Candidates form powerful fundraising teams and compete in honor of two local children who are blood cancer survivors. In her campaign, Ashley raised over $98,000.

April 24, 2018 Through the work of Ursuline’s Environmental Club, a peace pole was constructed on campus this spring. On the pole is the statement “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” written in eight different languages.

Since its instillation, it has served as a centerpiece of campus and a gathering place for prayer and blessings. Carrie Steingruby ’18 and Madelyn Grady ’18 are pictured with Ms. Herbst, their club moderator.

October 26, 2018 This year we held our annual “Cut Pass Love” hair drive where students and staff have their hair cut to be donated to benefit the Clean Wave Project and Children with Hair Loss. There was a total of 84 participants who collectively donated 503 inches of hair to these two organizations.

It’s always a fun and supportive day, involving the whole Ursuline school community.

November 6, 2018 Nicole Rogge Galloway ’00 was appointed as Missouri’s State Auditor during the mid-term elections. Since being sworn in as auditor back in April 2015, Nicole has shown a strong determination to do right

December 7, 2018 Volleyball senior Anna Bair ’19 has had an impressive season this year. She was named Athlete of the Week by both STL Today and 590 the Fan. As the area’s “kill” leader, she out shined herself, putting down over 1,000 career “kills”. She was then the first Ursuline athlete to be selected as the player of the year for the MWAA conference for volleyball.

Finally, she has been honored as the Metro area volleyball player of the year, and has been featured in The Post Dispatch in St. Louis.

Anna has committed to play at the University of Mississippi in the fall of 2019.

September 6, 2018 The Bearista Cafe held its grand opening this fall, and has already had an incredibly positive impact on our campus. The cafe started as an English project last April by Bess Ramsey ’19, Mallory Schanuel ’19, and Alyson Winkelmann ’19. In partnership with Park Avenue Coffee, students operate and manage the coffee shop, and all proceeds benefit student scholarships.

These bearistas have become a staple of the UA Cafe, and been great examples of our Ursuline values.

November 21, 2018 Christa Pfile Gleich ’10 was featured in Ladue News for her beautiful work with her small business, Simply Torn Art + Design. Christa creates handmade artwork, invitations, cards, and more using her own unique method of tearing paper into pieces and then assembling them into her visions.

Ursuline Highlights South Africa Experiencing Our Global Connection The Ursuline Sisters encourage Ursuline ministries around the globe to reach beyond our borders. Our own graduate profile calls our students to shape lives committed to faith-based living and leadership in a global community. In September, a group of ten students and two teachers traveled to South Africa to visit two of our Ursuline schools in Bryanston and Krugersdorp, South Africa (in the proximity of Johannesburg). While getting the chance to experience life in South Africa through tours and their host families, they also got the chance to experience our global connection first hand. Lauren Rutherford ’20 said of her experience, “This trip has really brought the phrase, ‘we are connected to Ursuline communities all over the world’ to light. We so often hear that phrase, but I do not think one truly realizes it until she experiencess it for herself!”

Varsity Volleyball 2018 District Champions In October, the varsity volleyball team won the title of District Champions in the Class 4 District 4 championship match. The team defeated Class 4 state champion St. Joseph’s Academy 25-16, 26-24, earning a title not won by Ursuline since 2015.

Throughout this season the team exemplified incredible teamwork and spirit. When talking about this team, coach Laura King ’10 couldn’t go very long without mentioning the hard-work, leadership, and determination shown by every girl, but especially by the seniors. A team of primarily seniors, the energy in the room with each scoring point was palpable. Their classmates, teachers, and the Ursuline community were excited to see all their hard-work pay off with an incredible season.

Alumnae Living Out Serviam Charlotte Deleste ’90 2018 Distinguished Alumna Charlotte has been a model of Serviam, compassion, and goodness in all that she has done. When her son, Gio, was born in 2005 with unimaginable health challenges, she and her husband formed a non-profit called “Gio’s Garden” to provide professional respite services to families and children with special needs. Charlotte has taken the Ursuline selfless call of Serviam to heart by creating a family resource in Gio’s Garden and continues to spread this spirit through her career, as a mother to Gio and Benicio and as a dedicated and heroic wife.

Charlotte was honored for her selfless call to Serviam in her life, career, and everyone she meets.

Jessica Richmeyer ’13 2018 Young Alumna Serviam Jessica has always been driven by her faith and service, forces that were cultivated from her time at Ursuline which have grown since her graduation. She participated in two service trips through the International Service Immersion Program (ISIP) during her time at Spring Hill College and, upon graduation, served as a Jesuit Volunteer with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest. She spent a year at the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery in Spokane, Washington. Jess whole-heartedly exemplifies Ursuline’s spirit of Serviam. She has dedicated her life to choices rooted in selfless acts of service and is a role model to the communities that surround her.
