THE LYCÉE AND ITS COMMUNITY AT 85 Founded in 1935, the Lycée Français de New York was the vision of Charles de Ferry de Fontnouvelle, Consul General of France in New York from 1931 to 1940. With courage and foresight in the midst of the most severe economic and political crises, he strived to create a storied institution that would educate students from the shared democratic values of France and of the United States.

The colors and symbols of our school identity on the cover reflect this vision. The laurels, from France’s palmes universitaires, are a symbol of academic excellence. Red, blue and purple represent the colors of the flags of the U.S. and France, and the blending of these two cultures in our international environment. Paint strokes reflect the spirit of creativity and invention present in our students’ hands.

Devenir nous-mêmes Becoming Us Le Lycée Français de New York a passé sa 85e année scolaire en mode hybride, et la dernière année de notre plan stratégique sur cinq ans, « Our Vision: Aujourd’hui et Demain » a donc vu nos élèves apprendre aussi bien en classe qu’à la maison.

The Lycée Français de New York spent its 85th school year—which concludes the five-year strategic plan of Our Vision: Aujourd’hui et Demain—in hybrid mode: with students learning both in the classrooms and from home.

Structuré autour de cinq objectifs, à savoir la promotion du bilinguisme et des technologies, l’épanouissement des élèves, la progression et la collaboration des enseignants, la construction de la York Wing et le renforcement de notre communauté, notre plan « Our Vision » était motivé par le sentiment que dans un monde en constante évolution, le succès de nos élèves dépend de leur capacité à mener et à accueillir le changement avec assurance et à prendre soin d’eux-mêmes, des autres et du monde autour d’eux.

Structured around five goals—bilingualism and technology advancement; student fulfillment; faculty growth and collaboration; building our York Wing; and strengthening our community—Our Vision was driven by the sense that, in today’s rapidly changing world, the success of our students hinges on their ability to lead and embrace change with confidence, while caring for themselves, one another and the world around them.

Nous avons lancé « Our Vision » en 2015, sans savoir à quel point ses principes s’avéreraient fondamentaux pour le bon fonctionnement de notre modèle hybride, dans le cadre duquel un esprit de collaboration et d’innovation combiné à une grande attention accordée à nos élèves a été la clé de la réussite d’une année passée à la fois sur le campus et en ligne.

We introduced Our Vision in 2015, not knowing how essential its tenets would become to the success of the Lycée in hybrid mode, whereby a spirit of collaboration and innovation, along with our deep care for the students, proved fundamental to a year spent both on campus and online.

This special issue of Lycée Magazine includes voices from across our community on the pressing issues of our time— citizenship, democracy, social justice, sustainability and technology—against the backdrop of Covid-19. How We Lived Covid-19 Elisabeth King, Director of Communications

We will be online for the next four weeks, we all thought. We took one day to acclimate our teachers to our new videoconferencing tool called Zoom. The following week, online classes began as a pilot program, which was extended for two weeks, then two more, and two more, until finally in May we began planning for the 2020-2021 school year in hybrid mode.

The story of our lives during Covid-19, however, is about much more than technology.

It is one of highs, lows, resilience and innovation for Lycée students, teachers and staff, as well as for our families. The Lycée community came together in this great experiment—Tous Ensemble: Lycée Strong, as per the 2021 Gala theme—made possible by preparation and investments, yet made lasting by ingenuity, community and care.

“After careful consideration, we have decided not to call our students and faculty back into the school facilities for the next four weeks, and to work remotely. Please note that we have no knowledge of a Covid-19 case in our community.”

Our Covid-19 moment began on Thursday, March 12, 2020, the evening that Evelyne Estey sent out a community-wide message that we would be switching (temporarily) to Online Lycée, our fully online schedule for all grades. Created in early January 2020, Online Lycée started out as a contingency plan when news first appeared about a mysterious coronavirus.

Veuillez noter qu’à notre connaissance, il n’y a aucun cas de Covid-19 au sein de notre communauté. » Notre expérience de la Covid-19 a commencé le jeudi 12 mars 2020, le soir où Evelyne Estey a envoyé un message à toute la communauté annonçant que nous passions (temporairement) à Online Lycée, notre plateforme d’enseignement à distance pour toutes les classes. Online Lycée était à l’origine une solution d’urgence, élaborée début janvier 2020 alors que la rumeur

During Covid-19, the boundaries between school, home and work inevitably blurred as the result of remote learning/working, in response to physical distancing constraints. At school, fewer students were allowed in classrooms, so they gathered in pods of only 10 to 12. At home, they made learning spaces where possible and in sometimes unexpected ways. Siblings shared study spaces. Working parents, including teachers and staff, took calls with small children at their side or on their lap— our preschool students finding particular comfort alongside their parents.

“There are no superheroes,” wrote Hélène Stafford, the school’s psychologist, to the community. And yet this yearand-a-half experience with Covid-19 has become one of rising to the occasion, as our students and teachers kept learning and teaching, despite the masks, and our administrative and facilities teams worked daily to keep us safe, healthy and connected.

If the Lycée’s 2015-2020 strategic plan aimed to foster the “four Cs” in our students—communication, creativity, collaboration and contemplation—Covid-19 catapulted that training forward. Our teachers saw new levels of collaboration and independence among our students,

La semaine suivante, les cours en ligne ont commencé sous forme d’un projet pilote, qui a été prolongé de deux semaines, puis de deux autres, puis d’encore deux autres, jusqu’à ce que, finalement, en mai, nous commencions à nous préparer pour une année scolaire 2020-2021 en mode « hybride ».

L’histoire de nos vies pendant la pandémie de Covid-19 est une histoire faite de hauts et de bas, de résilience et d’innovation pour les enseignants, le personnel et les élèves, aussi bien que leurs familles. Conformément au thème du Gala 2021, « Tous Ensemble : Lycée Strong », cette expérience inédite a été rendue possible grâce à des préparatifs et des investissements technologiques importants, mais périnnisée par l’ingéniosité, la solidarité et la bienveillance de chacun d’entre nous.

Pendant la crise de la Covid-19 à cause des exigences de distanciation physique, les élèves ont été accueillis en plus petit nombre dans chaque classe et ont travaillé en groupes de 10 à 12 personnes. À la maison, ils se sont créé des espaces d’apprentissage où ils le pouvaient. Certains frères et sœurs ont partagé leur bureau. Les parents en télétravail, leurs jeunes enfants à leurs côtés.

Hélène Stafford, la psychologue scolaire, a écrit à la communauté du Lycée qu' « il n’y a pas de super héro ». Cependant, cette année et demie de Covid-19 a mis en lumière notre persévérance : nos élèves ont continué à apprendre et nos enseignants à enseigner, malgré les masques ; nos équipes administratives ont travaillé tous les jours sans relâche pour assurer notre sécurité et notre santé et maintenir les liens entre nous.

Si le plan stratégique du Lycée pour 20152020 visait à promouvoir la communication, la créativité, la collaboration et la réflexion chez nos élèves, la pandémie a été l’occasion de réellement mettre en pratique ces compétences. Nos enseignants ont ainsi observé

especially in Zoom breakout groups, where they worked on Google Docs together, just as colleagues in an office might do.

So what will remain when all is said and done? Innovation, yes. Video, yes. Flipped classroom strategies, yes. Most of all, though, what will endure are the reminders of things we have always held dear: the joys of learning, of passing students in the hallway, of greeting friends in the cafeteria, and also the beauty of knowing that whatever life throws us, we’ve got this.

A generation on the frontlines of climate change Une génération face au changement climatique In 2016, the Lycée launched “Be the Change,” a semester-long class in social entrepreneurship for all ninth graders.

Developed in partnership with the French nonprofit Start-Up Lycée, the class asks students to examine the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals in the context of their own interests and to work in a team to develop a social enterprise that helps make real change on their issue.

I have been a co-teacher in this class for five years now and have seen a growing interest among our students in the environment. This year was no exception. Ninth graders Max Homola, Julia Lechanoine, Marian Robert, and Prune Rosset were each on teams whose enterprise addressed climate change. We talked, bilingually, about their projects and the role their generation can play in building a vision for a more sustainable future.

AB: Is climate change a passing trend with young people?

Green spaces, including our patio, and natural light in all classrooms were priorities when the Lycée's current buildings were designed.

Prune: Cela ne devrait pas être vu comme une mode. On voit beaucoup de messages qui circulent sur les réseaux sociaux.

Je vois des choses qui me choquent. Il faut faire quelque chose maintenant sinon dans l’avenir on ne pourra plus rien faire.

Marian: It’s more of a situation of urgency, where we don’t have that much time left to make a change so we know we need to start doing it now.

Max: L’écologie est un cocktail de plusieurs choses. J’ai toujours été passionné par les sciences et l’écologie. Aujourd’hui on a une nouvelle vision de l’écologie, et on a le sentiment que la nouvelle génération peut vraiment influencer l’avenir.

AB: How did this perspective influence your projects?

Max: Notre projet est NYC Ferry. On a eu cette idée de mettre des panneaux solaires sur les ferries. C’est un projet fou parce que c’est ambitieux, mais on voulait vraiment un résultat ! On a fait des recherches, et on a trouvé que le ferry est le moyen de transport en commun le moins polluant et aussi le moins utilisé. L’idée est de sensibiliser les gens à la pollution de l’air quotidienne avec un site web et instagram et grâce à cela de récupérer des fonds pour bénéficier d’un prototype pour les bateaux.

Prune: Tout simplement, on voulait que les gens recyclent plus et plus facilement.

Julia: De base, nous voulions travailler sur la biodiversité des plantes. Au début on avait pensé à acheter un terrain en dehors de New York, mais on s’est très vite rendu compte que c’est cher et pas possible !

Alors, on s’est dit pourquoi pas les toits ?

Cela purifie l’air, c’est joli, c’est mieux pour le chauffage et cela aide écologiquement.

New York se réjouit de planter les arbres, et de comment cela pourrait aider quelqu’un à mieux vivre. Quand on plante un arbre, on reçoit un sac ou un t-shirt où il y aurait un slogan, “I’ve planted a tree, have you? ” Quand je regarde cette phrase, je montre que je veux faire quelque chose, et je pense que les autres le feront aussi.

Julia: Je suis devenue presque extrémiste au point où je me douche avec une bouteille AB: Est-ce que vous avez l’impression d’être privilégiés, que c’est plus facile pour vous de vous engager?

AB: It seems like a lot of your enterprises are built around a concept of spreading the word.

Prune: Nous, par exemple, prenons les choses bios et elles sont plus chères. Comme on a de la chance, il faut faire plus attention. C’est plus une responsabilité que de la culpabilité.

Julia: Oui ! Le rôle de notre génération est d’intégrer l’environnement dans les esprits.

Max: On peut ouvrir les yeux et partager une nouvelle perspective. Si on le fait tous ensemble, c’est à dire toutes générations confondues, il y aura plus de chance.

Julia: Si on peut le faire, pourquoi on ne le fait pas ?

Max: Je trouve que c’est souvent les pays les plus développés, et donc les classes les plus élevées, qui polluent le plus. C’est à eux de réparer, même si cela coûte plus cher. Rendre des choses plus accessibles pour certaines et aider les autres. C’est à notre génération d’ouvrir les yeux, de dire aux gens que cela existe et de donner les moyens de les aider.

Prune: Je suis d’accord. On peut essayer de faire passer un message. Comme on est encore assez jeunes, on a besoin de l’aide des adultes pour faire un grand changement.

Marine: C’est plus une prise de conscience.

Même si nous n’avons pas encore le pouvoir de voter ou de prendre des décisions maintenant, c’est nous qui devons prendre des initiatives dans 10 ans, dans 20 ans.

AB: Est-ce qu le faite de vivre à New York a eu un impact sur votre engagement?

they didn’t know how. So we decided to create an App. The idea is that people scan their object, and the app tells you if it’s recyclable or not, and where to recycle.

Marian: Some people don’t have enough time to take part in bigger activities, but we can make an impact with small actions that together make a change in the big picture. We created Azola, a website where you share ideas, usually small and simple, and people could be inspired by your idea and take part in the activity, too. Things like taking a shorter shower, recycling and bringing your own cup to Starbucks. Ideas that wouldn’t take much time or consume much energy, but that people would actually do.

Max: Je ne suis pas très écologique parce que je prends l’avion. Avant de vivre à New York, j’étais à Cuba, au Maroc, en Norvège et en Tanzanie. J’ai pas mal voyagé, ce qui me permet d’ouvrir les yeux. Je pense à Cuba. Les gens ont l’écologie en eux sans le savoir. En Tanzanie, on récupère tout.

On refait tout. Ici, on achète tout neuf et on jette à la poubelle. Je pense que c’est bien de prendre l’exemple d’autres pays et de voir la différence.

Marine: My mother is from Tanzania. I never lived in Tanzania for very long, but I can say that in Zanzibar, people are not wasteful, but I don’t think they’re doing it out of respect for the planet, it’s because they don’t have sufficient funds to live on.

Tout de même, je me rends compte qu’à Zanzibar on a interdit les sacs en plastique.

Cela a fait un changement considérable.

Quand on revient à New York, on voit une

de deux litres d’eau. Je ne me douche qu’avec les shampooings et les savons durs.

Je suis presque 90% végétarienne.

Au bout d’un moment, mes parents ont commencé à en avoir peur et m’ont dit, « tu es allée trop loin… ».

In spring 2019, fifth graders worked with our facilities team to build an organic vegetable garden around the patio, with the harvest served in the cafeteria.

Prune: Avec ma famille on recycle, quand on va faire les courses on essaie d’emmener les sacs avec nous. Quand on a les sacs en plastique on essaie de le réutiliser pour d’autres choses.

Marian: J’essaie de faire attention, de ne pas gaspiller, d’être raisonnable, de ne pas prendre autant de transports. Si je suis obligée de les prendre, il faut les transports en commun.

Max: L’avenir pour nous c’est la mer. Notre terre est composée à 70% d’eau. La solution va venir de là.

Going Digital, Staying Human Technology advances in Lycée classrooms My favorite way to talk about the internet with my ninth graders is to play the soothing sounds of the analog dial-up modem. I smile as some students cover their ears to protect against the high-frequency “beeeeeep boop boop bop” of dial tones communicating through wires. We talk about the evolution of the internet, the fact that it uses physical connections, and how, despite what many may think, Wi-Fi has not existed since the beginning of time.

Unlike how it was in my student years, the digital world is the new normal for Lycée.nes. Social media has transformed how we communicate and use our time. Our students must learn how to use this increased digital connectedness for good.

To that effect, the Digital Learning Department was created in the 2013-2014 school year. Focused at first solely on technology integration, it has since expanded considerably.

Highlights of the program include a one-to-one iPad program for third to eighth graders, “maker kids” in the Preschool, computer science, making, and media classes for third to fifth graders, and computer science classes for sixth to tenth graders. Since 2019, there has also been an optional Bac spécialité called Numérique et science informatique, for eleventh and twelfth graders.

With all these advances, is the Digital Learning Department at risk of becoming obsolete? According to Head of Middle School Adena Dershowitz, departmental obsolescence has always been a bit tongue-in-cheek.

“The idea is that if we do our jobs well, teachers will feel comfortable teaching with digital tools and will no longer need an integrator to assist them,” she says. “After all, no school provides a pencil or notebook integrator, though

À la différence de la situation que j’ai connue lorsque j’étais étudiante, le monde digital fait désormais partie intégrante de la vie des élèves du Lycée. Les réseaux sociaux ont transformé notre façon de communiquer et d’utiliser notre temps. Nos élèves doivent donc apprendre à utiliser à bon escient cette connectivité digitale accrue.

C’est pour cette raison que le Digital Learning Department a été créé au cours de l’année scolaire 2013-14. À l’époque, il était uniquement axé sur l’intégration des technologies, mais il s’est depuis élargi pour inclure un Maker Space (atelier de fabrication numérique) et un laboratoire des médias, et pour accueillir des enseignants en informatique et en technologie numérique qui travaillent avec les élèves du Primaire et du Secondaire. Les points forts du département comprennent un programme permettant d’équiper chaque élève du CE2 à la 4e d’un iPad, le programme « Maker Kids » en maternelle, des cours d’informatique, de fabrication numérique et d’introduction aux médias du CE2 au CM2 et des cours d’informatique de la 6e à la Seconde.

The reality, however, is that the societal impact of technology is significantly greater than the technical use of the tools.

Students are constantly navigating a moral, emotional and intellectual minefield online. They are bombarded with notifications, social pressures and exposure to various types of material.

Avec toutes ces avancées, le Digital Learning Department ne risque-t-il pas de devenir obsolète ? Selon la Directrice du collège Adena Dershowitz, l’obsolescence du département a toujours été un sujet de plaisanterie un peu ironique : « L’idée était que si nous faisions bien notre travail, les enseignants se sentiraient assez à l’aise pour enseigner avec les outils numériques et n’auraient plus besoin d’aide pour les intégrer à leur travail. Après tout, aucune école n’éprouve de difficultés à utiliser des crayons ou des cahiers, même s’il y eut un temps où il s’agissait de nouveaux outils », dit-elle.

As Chesna Flora, digital learning integrator in the Primary, says, “Technology shows us the scope of the human imagination.

We sometimes think about these tools as being magical.

I try to emphasize to students that there were real people behind these inventions, with lots of hard work and time put into their development.”

Part of the challenge faced by the Digital Learning Team is making sure that students understand this human aspect of digital life and are able to manage it. “We call these devices ‘smart,’ but this technology can only do what we, as humans, are capable of creating,” adds Ms. Flora.

Toward that end, digital learning needed to be integrated into the French curriculum. Throughout Primary, students learn how old-school computers evolved into today’s pocket-size smartphones. In Secondary School, Ms. Flora and James Charrel cover Informatique, part of the French curriculum, for sixth and seventh graders and eighth to tenth graders. Mr. Charrel teaches students about digital citizenship. During the 2019-2020 school year, he worked with teachers Maud Leger, Mélanie Stouff and Noam Soulat to develop a class that taught seventh graders how to create games using the coding language Python. He also runs the hugely popular afterschool Minecraft coding club, which has competed in e-sports tournaments online since the Spring

Telling stories through video is integrated into classes across the school, giving students a creative way to engage in subjects as wide-ranging as literature, history and science. of 2020. The Lycée’s Middle School team has won several laurels in Capture the Flag games with schools around the world.

A common theme runs through all these projects: students are learning about how to use coding and technology in the real world. Several of the Digital Learning Department’s favorite projects explicitly involve incorporating the individual and technology: eighth graders creating “all about me” web pages, ninth graders inventing and prototyping mobile applications, and tenth graders producing short podcast episodes on technology and ethics.

As technology continues to evolve, our Digital Learning Department does the same. For example, they created MakerSpace@Home as a way to allow Secondary School students to complete maker activities at home during Covid-19. This adaptability bodes well for the ongoing relevance of the department and is a testament to the strong need for the team’s work. Looking to the next ten years, we will strive to ensure our students continue learning the value of using technology to accomplish their many initiatives while remaining aware of the pros and cons of the digital world: going digital, indeed—but above all, staying human.

C’est pourquoi l’apprentissage numérique devait absolument être intégré dans le programme scolaire français. Tout au long du primaire, les élèves apprennent comment les ordinateurs ont évolué pour devenir les ordinateurs de poche que nous utilisons aujourd’hui. Dans le Secondaire, Chesna Flora et James Charrel s’occupent des cours d’informatique, qui font partie du programme scolaire français, de la 6e à la seconde. M. Charrel éduque également les élèves à la citoyenneté numérique et, au cours de l’année scolaire 2019-2020, il a travaillé avec les enseignants Maud Léger, Mélanie Stouff et Noam Soulat à la conception d’un cours de programmation pour apprendre aux élèves de 5e à créer des jeux à l’aide du langage de programmation Python. D’ailleurs, plusieurs des projets préférés du département d’apprentissage numérique concernent explicitement la rencontre de l’individu avec la technologie : les élèves de 4e créent des pages Web « Tout savoir sur moi », les élèves de 3e conçoivent des prototypes d’applications mobiles, et les élèves de Seconde produisent de courts épisodes de podcast sur la technologie et l’éthique.

Comme la technologie ne cesse d’évoluer, notre département d’apprentissage numérique fait de même. Nous avons par exemple créé MakerSpace@Home pendant la crise du COVID-19 pour permettre aux élèves du secondaire d’emporter et de terminer chez eux leurs projets de fabrication numérique. Cette capacité d’adaptation est de bon augure pour la pérennité du département et témoigne de la nécessité de son travail. Au cours des dix prochaines années, face à l’influence croissante du monde numérique, j’espère que les élèves continueront à comprendre l’intérêt d’utiliser la technologie pour réaliser leurs nombreux projets, tout en restant conscients des avantages et des inconvénients du monde numérique. Il faut certes apprivoiser le numérique, mais avant tout rester humain.

Do you think or feel that there is a gender difference in expectations in coding and/or in STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math)?

Definitely, maybe not at our school, but in general, yes.

Just like in most fields, the STEM field is male-dominated, which makes it more difficult for women to succeed in it. It's not a matter of intelligence, but more of encouragement for girls to go into STEM and giving women more opportunities, and when women do go into STEM, treating and giving them jobs just as their male counterparts.

Coding is such a wonderful and magical world filled with endless possibilities. Previously, I had only learned some HTML techniques which were extremely basic. I had gotten pretty confident in it, but then as the years went on I started to kind of forget everything that I had learned. It was nice to learn in an environment that made it fun and not stressful because of maybe not completely understanding what was going on. Now that I've taken this class, I feel as though my love for coding has increased and I feel like I did when I was first learning HTML, interested and invested in what I'm doing. —Solène, Class of 2024

Why bother to teach art?

You could forgive a veteran art teacher for avoiding such a provocative question. After all, I am not above the instinct of self-preservation. But let’s entertain the idea for a moment.

Exactly how do students benefit from art classes?

On pourrait aisément comprendre qu’un professeur d’arts plastiques chevronné évite de répondre à une question aussi provocatrice. Après tout, je ne suis pas étranger à l’instinct d’auto-préservation. Mais explorons cette idée pendant un moment. En quoi exactement les cours d’arts plastiques profitent-ils à une école ? Pourquoi prenons-nous la peine d’en organiser ?

Among the dusty fossils and meteorites of Vienna’s Natural History Museum, you will find a remarkable, diminutive sculpture crafted by human hands. Nearly 30,000 years old, the Venus of Willendorf sits within a stone’s throw of the iconic Kunsthistorisches Art Museum. The proximity is not accidental. For as long as human civilizations have thrived, we have been producers of art. This ancient instinct lies within all of us.

In this spirit, we at the Lycée believe that within each child is an artist on a journey of self-discovery. Our students bring to our art rooms their personalities and ideas, molded by the visual cultures that surround them. We have extraordinary diversity within our student body at the Lycée. Each day our art rooms are transformed into frenetic kaleidoscopes of production.

So why do we bother to teach art? The question answers itself. Our young artists are already among us. They only await our guidance and support.

Au milieu des fossiles poussiéreux et des météorites du musée d’histoire naturelle de Vienne se trouve une remarquable statuette sculptée par des mains humaines. Vieille de près de 30 000 ans, la Vénus de Willendorf est conservée à deux pas de l’emblématique musée d’histoire de l’art de la capitale autrichienne. Cette proximité n’a rien d’un hasard : depuis que les civilisations humaines existent, elles ont toujours créé de l’art. Cet instinct ancestral existe en chacun de nous.

Ainsi, au Lycée, nous sommes convaincus que chaque enfant renferme au fond de lui un artiste à la découverte de soi-même. Nos élèves entrent dans nos salles d’arts plastiques avec leur personnalité et leurs idées, influencées par les cultures visuelles qui les entourent. Il y a une diversité extraordinaire parmi les élèves du Lycée. Chaque jour, nos salles d’arts plastiques se transforment en kaléidoscopes de production artistique frénétique.

Alors, pourquoi faisons-nous l’effort de donner des cours d’arts plastiques ? La réponse est simple. Les artistes de demain sont déjà parmi nous, ils ont juste besoin de nos conseils et de notre soutien.

Wednesday, January 6, 2021—a jour 7 (J7) of the seven-day cycle in current Lycée parlance—was a particularly long day.

On a typical J7, I barely have time to eat lunch, let alone check social media, as teaching runs from 8:25 a.m. through 4:55 p.m. to accommodate hybrid learning. Toward the end of this J7, I heard a few texts coming in. Glancing at my phone, I saw that both my new history-geography colleague, Colette Cavanaugh, and my junior high school best friend had each written, “Can you believe what’s happening?”

Not wanting to interrupt my classes, I would check later.

Mercredi 6 janvier 2021—le jour 7 (J7) du cycle de sept jours, pour reprendre la terminologie du Lycée, a été une journée particulièrement longue. Lors d’un J7 classique, j’ai à peine le temps de déjeuner, et encore moins de consulter les réseaux sociaux, car j’enseigne de 8h25 à 16h55, selon les modalités de l’apprentissage hybride. the presidential election. I knew that this period had parallels in the country’s founding history. The attempt to overthrow the U.S. government on that J7, however, shook me to the core, and it demanded discussion with my students.

The next day, I had four periods with different groups of eleventh graders. I have been impressed by the intellectual curiosity and civic engagement of these juniors. They are thoughtful, sensitive and eager to learn about American government. I knew that Thursday, January 7, would be no different.

My rules for them in our discussions that day were to be polite, attentive and respectful, and to speak the truth.

The students were stunned that in America—in several cases, the country to which their parents had chosen to move their families, for its openness and acceptance— they could witness such an event.

Two elements of the previous day stood out to them: First, they were alert to the disturbing presence of racist symbols, such as the Confederate battle flag and the “Camp Auschwitz” sweatshirt worn by one of the insurrectionists.

Second, they were troubled that few police officers seemed to be stopping it—in contrast to the strong presence of law enforcement officers at the Black Lives Matter protests they had attended last summer. We were able to make connections to the upheaval taking place in 19th-century France, but current events took center stage in meaningful discussions throughout the day.

The fact that Lycée students are so informed about what is going on around them and hungry for more is unsurprising.

I have seen this for the last 15 years as co-advisor of Harvard Model Congress (HMC)—which invites high school students to assume roles as U.S. senators, members of the House, cabinet ministers, and justices to take part in a government simulation over four days in Boston each February.

For months before HMC, students work together to study the U.S. Constitution and to understand parliamentary procedure and policy positions in such areas as foreign policy, energy and education. In Boston, they join over a thousand other students from the U.S. and around the world to debate bills and hear cases—a real-world look into the workings of American government.

“Given the political climate in the U.S. over the past four years, engaging in politics on both a local and national scale has become essential,” says Tiwani Ariyibi, past HMCer from the Class of 2020. “HMC helps us understand the importance of voting and being politically active.”

In this tumultuous political climate, I am proud to see how our HMC students grow in confidence and expertise, as well as in their understanding of the place of dialogue and cooperation in good government.

Mélanie Audrain, Class of 2018, describes her experience: “When I did HMC for the first time, I was given the role of a person whose political views are diametrically opposed to mine. At first, I didn’t know how I could defend his ideas.

Trying to understand what people think and why they think that way was a big learning experience for me.”

She adds, “HMC proved to me that change can happen when everyone puts forth positive energy toward arriving at a solution.”

Yes! Participation in HMC fosters an interest in politics that extends to post-Bac years and beyond. As a student at McGill University in Montreal, Mélanie joined her Lycée classmate, Nour Mohsen, to be part of Junior Peacemakers—a program that sends McGill students to local elementary schools for six one-hour teaching sessions on topics like global citizenship and child activism, or rights, responsibility and inequalities.

Last fall, Mélanie and Nour approached our Elementary School teachers Sébastien Freland and Harold Gretouce, who both taught fully online tracks in 2020-2021, to invite their fifth-grade students to take part in Junior Peacemakers.

Nour, who now runs Junior Peacemakers at McGill, credits her participation in student government at the Lycée, as well as time spent in Tunisia with her diplomat parents, for setting her course and interest in notions of citizenship.

She looks back at her years in our Elementary School as a time when her curiosity was piqued.

“I first learned about the concepts of rights and law from Rolla Boulad, in third grade, and about how to combat discrimination from my teacher in fifth grade,” she said.

“Giving young people the tools to develop a critical point of view based on values and morals, and to form tenable opinions, should happen at an early age, just as it did for me,” she adds.

It seems to be working, according to this year’s fifth graders. “Junior Peacemakers makes us aware of things in the world and how we can all help,” says Valentin, while Théodore appreciated that their Junior Peacemakers teachers “were students who went to the Lycée, like us.”

The Lycée’s mission is to educate citizens of culture and courage, “to prepare students of many origins to be thinkers, innovators and leaders, at home in the world.”

This statement is as true today as it was in 1938, when— as the New York Times reported on the dedication of the new building at 3 East 95th Street—Columbia University’s president, Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, pointed out “the many strikingly parallel thoughts and actions of Frenchmen and Americans in their…enunciation and practice of the principles of democracy.”

During their years at 505 East 75th Street and beyond, our students are demonstrating their commitment to democracy and dialogue, and their impressive leadership qualities. At a time when so much is at stake for democratic institutions, they give me hope.

Perhaps one day a Lycée ancien(ne) élève (alum) will inhabit the White House or the Élysée Palace.

Les élèves étaient surpris de voir un tel événement se produire aux États-Unis, dans ce pays que certaines familles du Lycée ont choisi en raison des valeurs de tolérance et de démocratie qu’il représente.

Deux éléments des événements de la veille leur ont sauté aux yeux : ils ont été choqués par la présence de symboles racistes, comme le drapeau confédéré et le sweat « Camp Auschwitz » porté par l’un des insurgés, mais également troublés par le manque de policiers sur place, en contraste avec la forte présence d’agents des forces de l’ordre lors des manifestations Black Lives Matter auxquelles ces jeunes avaient assisté. Nous avons établi des comparaisons avec les bouleversements qui ont eu lieu en France au 19ème siècle, mais l’actualité était au centre de nos discussions.

Il n’est pas surprenant que les élèves du Lycée soient si curieux et bien informés de ce qui se passe autour d’eux.

Je l’ai constaté au cours des 15 dernières années en tant que conseillère adjointe du Harvard Model Congress (HMC), qui permet aux lycéens d’endosser le rôle de sénateurs américains, de parlementaires, de ministres et de juges pour participer à une simulation de gouvernement pendant quatre jours à Boston, chaque année en février.

Pendant les mois précédant le HMC, les élèves travaillent ensemble pour étudier la Constitution américaine et pour comprendre les procédures parlementaires et les positions politiques dans des domaines tels que la politique étrangère, l’énergie et l’éducation. Au début, je ne savais pas comment défendre ces idées. Essayer de comprendre ce que les gens pensent et pourquoi ils pensent ainsi a été une grande expérience d’apprentissage pour moi. »

Mes seules règles pour nos discussions étaient d'être polis, attentifs et respectueux, et de dire la vérité.

Elle a ajouté : « HMC m’a prouvé que le changement pouvait se produire lorsque chacun déploie une énergie positive pour parvenir à une solution. » En effet, la participation au HMC suscite un intérêt pour la politique qui perdure jusqu’aux années post-bac et même après. Alors qu’elle était étudiante à l’université McGill de Montréal, Mélanie a rejoint sa camarade de Lycée, Nour Mohsen, au sein des Junior Peacemakers, un programme qui envoie des étudiants de McGill dans des écoles primaires locales pour six cours d’une heure sur des sujets tels que la citoyenneté mondiale ou l’activisme des enfants.

L’automne dernier, Mélanie et Nour ont contacté deux professeurs de l’école primaire, Sébastien Freland et Harold Gretouce, afin d’inviter leurs élèves de CM2 à participer au programme Junior Peacemakers.

Nour, qui dirige Junior Peacemakers à McGill, a commencé à s’intéresser à l’importance de la citoyenneté en tant que membre de l’assemblée des élèves du Lycée, ainsi qu’en Tunisie avec ses parents diplomates. « C’est Rolla Boulad qui m’a appris les notions de droits et de lois lorsque j’étais en CE2, et mon instituteur de CM2 m’a appris comment lutter contre les discriminations », a-t-elle déclaré. « Il est important de donner aux élèves les outils nécessaires pour développer un point de vue critique fondé sur des valeurs et une morale, et pour se forger des opinions défendables, comme j’ai eu la chance de pouvoir le faire », ajoute-t-elle.

Cela semble fonctionner, si on en croit les élèves de CM2 de cette année. « Les Junior Peacemakers nous font prendre conscience des réalités du monde et de la façon dont nous pouvons tous aider », constate Valentin, tandis que Théodore apprécie que leurs professeurs Junior Peacemakers soient des élèves qui sont allés au Lycée.

La mission du Lycée est de former des citoyens de culture et de courage, « de préparer des élèves de différentes origines à devenir des penseurs, des innovateurs et des leaders, dans leur pays et partout dans le monde. » Cette déclaration est aussi vraie aujourd’hui qu’elle l’était en 1938. À l’époque, le président de l’université de Columbia, Nicholas Murray Butler, avait souligné « les nombreuses pensées et actions parallèles des Français et des Américains dans leur... évocation et leur pratique des principes de la démocratie. » Au cours de leurs années au 505 East 75th Street et par la suite, nos élèves nous prouvent leur engagement envers la démocratie et le dialogue, ainsi que leurs impressionnantes qualités de leadership. À l’heure où tant de choses sont en jeu pour les institutions démocratiques, ils me donnent de l’espoir.

Peut-être qu’un jour un(e) ancien(ne) élève du Lycée s’installera à la Maison Blanche ou au Palais de l’Élysée.

Une résidence artistique sur Zoom stimule la créativité des élèves de CM1 « Allez, on choisit les images, on coupe, on déchire, on colle sur la feuille. À chacun de trouver son univers ».

Artiste en résidence pour trois semaines en décembre dernier, Delphine Diallo s’adresse aux élèves de CM1 par écran interposé. C’est la 27ème résidence organisée pour nos élèves depuis la création de ce programme d’artiste-en-résidence en 2012 par le Centre Culturel.

Because of Covid restrictions, Delphine Diallo’s residency took place entirely online, with students collecting magazines, photographs and other memorabilia and working at home to assemble their collages, which were to become personal narratives on the theme, “I am a Child of the World”.

Le programme d’artiste-en-résidence ne pourrait avoir lieu sans le soutien et l’engagement des enseignants, associés au « making of » de la résidence notamment par des rencontres avec l’artiste en amont. Au fil des années, ces semaines se sont de mieux en mieux intégrées au programme scolaire.

COVID oblige, la résidence de Delphine Diallo a été organisée entièrement en ligne. Les élèves ont amassé magazines, photos, et autres images et, de chez eux, ont assemblé des collages personnalisés sur le thème « Je suis un enfant du monde ».

Paul montre son premier essai de collage sur ce thème : un soleil central, aussi mystérieux qu’un trou noir, semble absorber le monde qui l’entoure, illustré par des paysages de plages, de montagnes, de routes, de ponts. Un autre jour, c’est Lina qui présente son travail : une photo d’elle trône au milieu d’images évoquant son décor familier, ce qui lui tient à cœur : sa famille, ses amies, ses jouets. Puis, ce sera Dean qui dévoile son « dragon ». « Et si tu ouvrais l’intérieur du dragon ? ». Delphine Diallo encourage chaque élève à imaginer cette part d’inconnu pour mieux explorer sa propre place dans le monde. « Le collage aide à voir l’enfant autrement, grâce à l’analyse à la fois des images collées et de leur placement », commente la photographe à l’intention des professeurs présents qui ont aidé à organiser la résidence.

De mère française « blonde aux yeux bleus » et de père sénégalais, la jeune femme n’a elle-même jamais cessé de chercher son identité. Des études classiques à l’Académie Charpentier à Paris lui ont appris les bases et les concepts, mais ne lui ont pas permis de s’exprimer pleinement. Elle a commencé sa carrière en travaillant, en Afrique notamment, aux côtés de l’artiste Peter Beard « apprenant à construire une histoire avec des images ». Installée aux États-Unis, à Brooklyn exactement, elle a concentré sa recherche artistique sur le corps de la femme noire pour « autonomiser les femmes noires », écrit-elle.

The artist in residence program could not take place without the support and engagement of the teachers, who are deeply involved in the making of each residency, including working with the artist before the work with students begins.

Student Paul shows his first collage: a sun, as mysterious as a black hole, seems to absorb a world of landscape images of a beach, mountain, road and bridge. On another day, Lina presents her work: a photo of herself in the middle of images of her family, her friends, her toys. Then Dean introduces his “dragon.” “What if you opened the inside of the dragon?” asks Delphine, encouraging each student to imagine the unknown to better explore their own place in the world. “Collage helps us to see the child differently through an analysis of the way images are glued and placed on the paper,” says Diallo, commenting for the fourth-grade teachers who are present and have helped to guide her program with the students.

At the start of her residency, Delphine Diallo gave students a virtual tour of her work and the creative process from her Brooklyn-based studio.

A child of a “blond, blue-eyed” French mother and a Senegalese father, Delphine never stopped searching for her own identity. Classical studies at the Académie Charpentier in Paris taught her basic concepts, but she says that they did not allow her to express herself fully. She began her career in Africa working alongside the artist Peter Beard, “learning to build a story with images.” Now based in Brooklyn, she focuses her artistic pursuit on the body of the Black woman to “create a new narrative to empower Black women.”

“Becoming Us” is the essence of her work, which she shared with students from her studio, giving them the tools they need but leaving them “the freedom to do what they want,” which the students embraced fully.

“There were no rules, you could do anything you wanted,” said one student. Said another, “We understood that we all have something to say. We’re all important. This project has helped us to express ourselves and to imagine what we think of the world.”

On a ainsi compris que l’on avait tous quelque chose à dire. On est tous importants. (...). Ce projet nous a servi à nous exprimer et à mettre en images ce que l’on pense du monde. »

Becoming Us

Un nouveau cours donne aux sixièmes le temps de mieux se connaître à une étape fondamentale de leur développement.

Le collège sert de passerelle entre le cocon douillet de l’école primaire et l’indépendance de notre lycée. Pendant des années, notre collège, qui allait de la sixième à la troisième, était un départ abrupt vers le lycée, avec son accent sur la rigueur et une préparation exigeante au Baccalauréat français.

La création de l’Advisory au Secondaire et le développement du programme d’apprentissage social et émotionnel au Primaire, qui font partie du plan stratégique 2015-2020, ont commencé à adoucir cette transition en mettant l’accent sur le bien-être et le développement personnel des élèves.

La prochaine étape de ce travail, la construction d’un parcours cohérent et cohésif pour les élèves, dans lequel les élèves passent en douceur d’une année à l’autre, a commencé sérieusement cette année, avec l’introduction d’une nouvelle structure au Secondaire.

A new class gives time for sixth graders to better know themselves at a fundamental stage of their growth and development.

The Lycée’s Middle School provides a bridge between the cocoon-like nature of our Elementary School and the independent ethos of our High School. For years, the Middle School at the Lycée, which comprised the sixth to ninth grades, served as an abrupt start to Secondary School, with its focus on rigor and a demanding preparation for the French Baccalaureate.

Inspirée par les principes des neurosciences, notre Collège a été réorganisé pour mieux répondre aux besoins socio-émotionnels de nos collégiens. Middle School comprendra désormais de la sixième à la quatrième, et la troisième a trouvé sa place dans le secondaire où les élèves commencent à se préparer sérieusement à l’enseignement supérieur et au-delà.

The creation of Advisory in the Secondary School, plus the development of a social and emotional learning curriculum in the Primary School—both part of the 2015-2020 strategic plan—began to smooth out this transition, creating more focus on student well-being and personal development.

The next step in this work—building a consistent and cohesive student journey, wherein students move seamlessly from one grade to the next—began in earnest this year.

The Middle School is now its own entity, with a clear leadership structure and renewed pedagogical focus.

“The Middle School years are a time of expanding discovery and exploration, when students are further encouraged to take risks, accept failure as part of the learning process and also begin developing their own sense of agency,” says Adena Dershowitz, new Head of the Middle School.

“We must assist students in practicing these skills during these years, which will set them up for future success,” she says.

As part of that work, we established the new class “Becoming Us” to help all our sixth graders better understand themselves as they enter a most crucial phase of their development.

Created by Rebecca Perini, Middle School Counselor, and Jamie Laurens, Dean of the Middle School, the class borrows from both Ms. Perini’s background in cognitive

Le collège a une nouvelle structure et une orientation pédagogique renouvelée. “Les années de collège sont celles de l’expansion de la découverte et de l’exploration, où les élèves sont davantage encouragés à prendre des risques, à accepter l’échec comme faisant partie du processus d’apprentissage et à commencer à développer leur sens de l’autonomie”, explique Adena Dershowitz, qui est la nouvelle directrice du collège. “Nous devons aider les élèves à mettre en pratique les compétences qui les prépareront à leur réussite future au cours de ces années”, ajoute-t-elle.

At the end of the year, our hope is that the students will leave feeling heard, valued, and respected.

I developed more kindness.—Flore behavioral therapy and Ms. Laurens’s expertise in literature and mindfulness. The result is an interactive program that fosters the core skills our students will need to thrive in our Middle School and thereafter.

“Becoming Us” was launched during the pandemic to provide a social and emotional outlet for students, especially those who may feel stressed or isolated.

“Our hope is that students will leave the year feeling heard, valued and respected,” says Ms. Perini.

As part of the class and for this magazine, in February we asked sixth graders what positive new habit(s) they started during the pandemic and hoped to continue practicing.

What follows are their short reflections, illustrated by them, on a most unpredictable time in their lives.

Créé par Rebecca Perini, Middle School Counselor, et Jamie Laurens, Dean of Middle School, ce cours s’appuie sur les connaissances de Rebecca Perini en matière de thérapie cognitivo-comportementale et de Jamie Laurens en matière de littérature et de pleine conscience pour créer un programme interactif qui favorise les compétences essentielles dont nos élèves auront besoin pour s’épanouir tout au long de l’école secondaire et par la suite.

Le programme “Becoming Us” a été lancé pendant la pandémie afin de fournir un exutoire social et émotionnel aux élèves, qui peuvent se sentir particulièrement stressés ou isolés. “À la fin de l’année, nous espérons que les élèves se sentiront écoutés, valorisés et respectés”, explique M. Perini.

Nous avons demandé aux élèves de sixième année de nous décrire les nouvelles habitudes prises pendant la pandémie, qu’ils espèrent conserver à l’avenir. Voici de courtes réflexions, illustrées par leurs soins, sur un moment des plus imprévisibles de leur vie.

Bernard Otalora retired in June 2021, after 43 years at the Lycée.

Since he arrived in 1978, he has taught or coached generations of students, including five current employees and countless students whose parents were also his students.

Antoinette Silverman, alors responsable des ressources humaines du Lycée, est au micro. Elle commente une série de portraits qui défile sur le mur du fond de la cantine.

Au commencement, elle célébrait les cinq années de présence d’une bonne dizaine d’employés de l’établissement, puis les dix ans, les quinze ans, les vingt ans… Plus le nombre d’années augmentait, moins il y avait de portraits. À quarante ans, il n’en restait plus qu’un. Comme dans Koh Lanta.

Toujours droit, toujours vaillant, toujours en forme. Le sourire toujours aux lèvres.

Ce dernier survivor, le dernier des derniers, c’est Bernard Otalora.

It’s 2018, and all the Lycée staff are gathered in the cafeteria for our annual Thanksgiving celebration. Antoinette Silverman, then Director of Human Resources, is emcee, introducing staff who are celebrating major anniversaries at the Lycée. Groups of portraits scroll across the screen as she announces the 5-year anniversaries, and then the 10-year, 15-year, 20-year and onward—with fewer and fewer faces appearing in every group. By the time she reaches the 40-year category, only one face remains. This final honoree, the last of the last, is Bernard Otalora, his characteristic smile beaming out from the screen.

Bernard les avait tous battus. Aux épreuves sportives d’abord. Geoffrey Chevalier, professeur d’EPS au Primaire à l’époque, se souvient d’un parcours de basket organisé avec l’ensemble de l’équipe d’EPS : « Une fois le parcours créé, on le teste pour voir s’il n’est pas trop difficile. Forcément, à un moment, on relâche un peu la concentration, et ça part en concours de tir milieu de terrain.

Bernard rigole bien en nous regardant, et il se dit que ce serait pas mal d’essayer.

Sans élan, à une main, dans un tir pas du tout académique, il marque, en un seul essai.

On a arrêté le concours de suite. » Cette dextérité et cette force tranquille, sans doute les doit-il à sa rigueur et à sa régularité dans l’effort.

Comme toujours, Bernard Otalora conquers all. In sporting events, he wins with his dexterity and quiet strength— the products of his rigor and dedication.

Geoffrey Chevalier, an Elementary School PE teacher, remembers a basketball challenge that the PE Department had organized: “Once the course was created, we tested it out to make sure it was not too difficult. As time went on, we relaxed a bit, until it turned into a shooting contest from the midcourt line. Bernard had been watching us, his laugh ringing out. Then he says he’d like a try. He holds the ball in one hand, not even trying to gain momentum with a run-up. And defying all technique, on his first try, he shoots and he scores.

We stopped the contest right there and then.”

pourquoi le vendredi est la pire journée pour un poulet : « Because it’s Friday ! » répondent-ils tous en chœur ! Clarisse, élève de cinquième, avoue : « Les blagues de M. Otalora sont drôles parce qu’on ne les comprend pas toujours ». Lucas lui explique du coup que « Friday » peut s’écrire « Fried day » et qu’aux États-Unis, on mange souvent le poulet frit.

Mia, en cinquième également, renchérit : « Une fois, j’étais en retard de cinq minutes, tout le monde a rigolé quand je suis arrivée.

C’était parce que M. Otalora avait dit à la classe que j’étais MIA : Missing In Action! » Quant à Alienor, elle raconte avec un grand sourire que, alors que la classe avait été la semaine précédente en retard en histoire à cause de lui, « M. Otalora nous a libérés à l’heure pour ne pas faire d’histoires avec le prof d’histoire ».

Luc adore quand Bernard l’appelle Lucky Luke, et Simon loue ses talents en maths. « Il peut faire des calculs très compliqués, très rapidement, très vite. » Jasmine apprécie son accent et révèle que Bernard apprend un nouveau mot en anglais par jour. Il relit et corrige même « L’Essentiel », envoyé à toute la communauté du Lycée le dimanche. Il n’arrête jamais.

Bien évidemment, là où Bernard est le plus fort, c’est dans les épreuves de survie.

Pour Mélodie Brusq, jeune collègue d’EPS, « Bernard adore la pêche et peut vous parler de ses mouches pendant des heures ! » Annabelle Altefrohne, autre collègue, poursuit : « Chaque année à Pontiac, Bernard apporte tout son attirail de pêche.

Une fois, il aurait capturé un poisson énorme. Bref, toujours est-il qu’il aurait été soit disant relâché avant que personne n’ait pu le voir ! » Quelle longévité ! Combien d’élèves, combien de collègues Bernard a-t-il vus passer ?

Joelle Reilly, professeur d’anglais, se souvient encore des cours d’EPS de Bernard…en tant qu’élève. « Il était en tout début de carrière à ce moment-là, et le Lycée avait la moitié de son âge actuel, ce qui marque aussi le parcours de Bernard dans nos murs. Il n’oublie jamais le nom d’un seul élève.

Dans toute réunion d’anciens élèves, c’est toujours Bernard qu’ils réclament. Il est incontournable ! » Après son discours, Antoinette passe le micro à ses collègues de l’époque : Gabriel, Alexandra, Valérie et Mélodie qui rendent un bel hommage à Bernard. Lui baisse timidement la tête. D’habitude peu avare en parole, il semble gêné d’être soudainement

Tout le monde est pris par surprise. Benjamine des enseignantes, Laurine Kleitz vient d’arriver au Lycée. Les mots sortent tout seuls, un peu écorchés par l’émotion. « Je voulais juste te dire Bernard à quel point tu as été important pour moi quand je suis arrivée au Lycée. Tu es la première personne qui est venue vers moi, tu m’as demandé si j’allais bien. Je n’ai jamais vu quelqu’un d’aussi généreux que toi, et pour ça, et au nom de tous, je voulais te remercier. »

As Bernard now retires from the Lycée, what a legacy he leaves behind. Amid the generations of students and colleagues that have come and gone, he has remained a constant, a bulwark and a truly integral part of our history. Joelle Reilly, a Secondary School English teacher, has fond memories of his PE classes—from her own time as a student! “He was at the very beginning of his career then, and the school was half its current age. The school’s journey truly parallels his own storied one here. He’s always the most popular person at every alumni reunion, a quintessential part of the community.”

Asking our students why Friday is the worst day for a chicken, he is met with a resounding chorus: “Because it’s Friday!”

When seventh grader Clarisse confesses, “Mr. Otalora’s jokes are sometimes funny because we don’t understand them,” her classmate Lucas explains it as “fried day” and references the American penchant for fried chicken.

Mia, also in seventh grade, has her own joke: “I was five minutes late once, and when I walked in, everyone laughed— because Mr. Otalora had told the class I was MIA: missing in action!”

Another student, Alienor, recounts how one of his lessons made her whole class ate to history class. “The week after that, Mr. Otalora let us out on time, saying that he didn’t want the history teacher to make us history.”

Luc loves when Bernard calls him Lucky Luke, and Simon praises his math skills: “He can do very complicated calculations, very quickly, very fast.”

—Mia Jasmine adores his accent and reveals that Bernard learns a new word in English every day. He would even proofread and correct L’Essentiel, the newsletter sent to the entire community on Sundays. He never stops.

Unsurprisingly, he is happiest when outdoors. Mélodie Brusq, a young PE colleague, reveals that, “Bernard loves fly-fishing and can talk to you about his flies for hours!”

Annabelle Altefrohne, another colleague, continues the tale: “Every year at Camp Pontiac, Bernard would bring all his fishing gear. Once, he caught a HUGE fish. But to

Rewind to the 2018 Thanksgiving celebration: Antoinette passes the microphone to colleague after colleague and all pay beautiful, heartfelt tributes to Bernard, as he shyly bows his head. He is rarely at a loss for words, but suddenly being the center of attention seems to embarrass him. Their tributes wind down, and then, in a burst of sincerity, another hand reaches out to claim the microphone. It is one of the newest and youngest teachers—Laurine Kleitz, who just arrived at the Lycée that summer. Her voice aquiver with emotion, she confides: “I just want to tell you, Bernard, how important you were to me when I arrived at the Lycée.

You were the first person who came up to me and asked me if I was okay. I’ve never seen anyone as generous as you, and for that, and on behalf of everyone, I want to thank you.”

As she dissolves into tears, she is drowned out by the spontaneous standing ovation and applause in the room—a fitting tribute to Bernard, a teacher so devoted and beloved as to have become the veritable mascot of the Lycée.

lecteurs du "Year Book", comment Dans cette revue non scientifique, nous ont été ses débuts, et comment avons emprunté à nos Yearbooks pour saisiril l’essence de l’expérience des élèves au cours des neuf décennies d’existence du Lycée.

Après trois ans d'études, de négociations et de forrnalités, le Lycée a pu ouvrir ses portes le 5 octobre 1935,grâce au bénéfice d'une représentation théâtrale donnée par des amateurs. La somme de $2.133.90 ainsi obtenue, représentait à cette date les seules disponibilités financières du Lycée.

A l'ouverture, 18 élèves étaient présents, répartis de la dixième à la sixième incluse; la fin de l'année scolaire en comptait 29. L'année suivante le chiffre s'élevait à 69 et en 1937-38 à 85.

C'est alors que le Lycée grâce, en partie, à de généreuses donations françaises et américaines, se rendit acquéreur du Charles de Ferry de Fontnouvelle, magnifique immeuble où il se trouve actuellement. La cloche a sonné!

Ce n'est pas vraiment pour la récréation que nous venons à l'école, mais elle est le point culminant de notre matinée. Pour y parvenir, il faut d'abord monter le versant: les périodes avant la récréation.

Puis on descend l'autre versant: les périodes après la récréation.

Les garçons, en rang, attendent pour aller jouer dans la cour.

La monitrice la première. "Mais dépêche-toi donc, on n'aura pas de temps pour jouer!" Vite, vite, en haut des escaliers, nous ouvrons la porte et nous courons dans la salle de récréation des filles.

-"A quoi veux-tu jouer?" - A "red light." - Qui veut être "it"? - Moi! Moi! Moi! "Cette fois, c'est Marie-Eve. Dépêche-toi! - Oups! Fais attention, Jeanne, ne me pousse pas ... - Tu y es! Ha! ha! tu ne peux pas m'attraper! - Cette fille boit du lait! tu vas la renverser!"

Pendant les deux premières années au Lycée, on est encore trop petit pour faire de vraies bêtises. On est placé sous la douce protection des filles, avec lesquelles on partage le toit et on a une très longue récréation. En Sème, la vie commence. Alors, on descend dans la cour avec les garçons. On descend, mais en vérité, c'est une grande élévation.

On joue au football, ou on se bat. Il y a chaque année une nouvelle mode. Quand j'étais en Sème, c'étais la fronde. Les feuilles de calcul et de dictées rendues se changeaient immédiatement en munitions dans nos poches. C'était mal. Mais en 8ème, c'état pire: c'était l'âge des pistolets à eau. Il ne faut pas penser qu'ils ne se faisaient jamais confisquer! ... Et cette année, c'est pire encore: les pistolets qui tirent des pétards.

Deux peüts garçons sont assis à une table et boivent du lait. Uns maitresse nous dit: "Ne courez pas ici.

Vous pouvez courir dehors!" Mais il faudrait trop longtemps pour aller en bas chercher nos manteaux; il faut jouer à un autre jeu.

Dans un coin, deux petites filles tournent en xond, Un petit garçon court ver la porte; la porte s'ouvre, le petit garçon reçoit un coup sur la tête. Il se met à pleurer; bientôt une maîtresse baigne son front avec de l'eau froide, et tout va bien.

1940s

Pendant lœ récréation, les plus sages en classe deviennent des diables, et les diables restent ce qu'ils étaient. Tout le monde court saute, crie, s'agite et oublie le travail. En ce moment, le roi est en guerre avec le Barracuda. Le Barracuda a plus d'hommes, mais nous nous battons bravement. La cloche sonne toujours trop tôt la fin de ces moments joyeux. Nous montons sales, les chemises dehors, fatigués, mais reposés en même temps.

1950s amateurs

Beaucoup de pain sur la planche pour nos basketteurs aussi, de la mi-décembre jusque vers la fin mars.

Deux équipes, celle de Première et celle de Seconde, ont cette année défendu les couleurs du Lycée.

Parmi les équipes auxquelles nous nous so~nes mesurés, citons en premier lieu Franklin, Trinit y, Friends Seminary, Walden, qui comptent parmi les meill~ures de la ville.

Rudolf Steiner, Dwight, Browning, le French Sportlng Club, les coriaces ltQuintsltde la Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, et les agiles garçons du Leake and Watts Children's Home de Yonkers complètent la liste de nos "adversaires".

Nos joueurs ont fait bonne impression partout, autant par leur esprit sportif que par leurs qualités techniques.

Certains matchs furent remarquables d'animation et de qualité, et si le nombre de nos défaites (de justesse, soulignonsle) est légèrement supérieur à celui de nos victoires, nous n'en demeurons pas moins satisfaits de notre saison dans son ensemble.

En effet, nous avons joué la plupart du temps sur terrain adverse (handicap certain), et contre des équipes supérieurement entra1riées.

Les sports ne tiennent pas au Lycée la place qu'ils tiennent dans les écoles américaines, mais nous pouvons affirmer que celles-ci ont pour nous que de l'estime: du respect!

N'oublions pas ici de remercier bien sincèrement nos fidèles supporters - élèves de Second, Troisième et Quatrième - qui sont venus nous encourager de leur présence et de leur voix (avec mention spéciale à la sympathique équipe de "supportrices" de Seconde!).

A défaut de quantité nous avions de la qualité!

La saison de base-baIl sera sur le point de commencer lorsque ces lignes iront sous presse.

Nous jouerons surtout contre les écoles que nous avons rencontrées en basket-baIl. A en juger par la qualité de nos uniformes presque tout neufs, nous devrions, dans ce domaine encore, accomplir de belles parformances.

N'anticipons pas pourtant et surtout ne soyons pas présomptueux: répétons tout simplement avec la voix de la sagesse populaire: Qui jouera, verra!

Oh! la cloche a sonné!

Puis d'année, en année la liste <les élèves s'allongea jusqu'à ceUe année où nous comptons 229 inscrits.

Embracing Diversity,

Growing Stronger Sitara Herur-Halbert, Communications Associate

Sitara Herur-Halbert is an executive board member at NYC Pride, chairing the Diversity, Accessibility and Inclusion Committee. They also work as a community organizer in Westchester, New York.

It’s 4:00 p.m. on a slow-moving day, in the lull before classes formally end for the 2019-2020 school year. The Lycée has been online since March, the days stretching out endlessly in my little suburban town, with no train rides into the city, no routine and no sense of normalcy. An unending cycle of news plays on the TV, on my phone, as I scroll through social media. Then I receive a message from a colleague, “Have you seen the Black@Lycée account?”

Il est 16 heures, c’est une journée calme avant la fin officielle des cours pour l’année 2019-2020. Le Lycée a basculé en ligne depuis le mois de mars, les journées sont de plus en plus longues dans ma petite ville de banlieue, sans trajet en train vers New York, sans routine, sans normalité. Les actualités tournent en boucle à la télévision et sur mon smartphone. Puis, un collègue m’envoie un texto.

I turn to Instagram. “Welcome to Black at Lycée. On this account, we will share stories from Black students, staff, alumni and parents. Anonymity is 100 percent guaranteed.”

« Tu as vu le compte Black@Lycée ? » J’ouvre Instagram. « Bienvenue sur Black at Lycée. Sur ce compte, nous partageons des histoires d’élèves, d’employés, d’anciens élèves et de parents noirs. Les témoignages sont entièrement anonymes. »

I sit back in my chair. It had been seven months since I started at the Lycée, and despite my background in communityorganizing in both the U.S. and France, I was not fully prepared for the unique contexte franco-américain informing the confessions being submitted by students.

But, I thought, maybe we were truly ready to look within and admit to the ways in which we’d been racist—and consider how we are now trying to be anti-racist.

Je me rassois. Cela fait sept mois que je travaille au Lycée, mais malgré mon expérience d’engagement associatif aux États-Unis et en France, je n’étais pas préparée à ce type de confessions envoyées par les élèves dans ce contexte francoaméricain unique. How are Y8 students working to create change in the midst of a pandemic?

school spirit and our place in the New York community.” A call to “celebrate the great diversity of the school,” it has evolved, five years later, into a more comprehensive ideal. Our school mission now states that we must “embrace diversity” and—as our Trustees shared in a winter letter to the community—“strive to build a community of teaching and learning that is inclusive, culturally sensitive and equitable, and in which all feel a strong belonging in the pursuit of educational excellence.”

Such progress reflects the efforts of our community as well as developments in the world around us. It embodies the truest sense of our goal to “promote school spirit,” for what is school spirit if not a willingness to recognize institutional flaws and consequently to work for change?

School spirit undoubtedly influenced the Class of 2020. Graduating into a nation rocked by the violent death of George Floyd, they started the Black@Lycée Instagram account, which served as a healing space for Black students, parents and faculty, and as a realization for non-Black community members. The account emphasized Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee projects that had previously been siloed; meetings attended primarily by staff of color; student club meetings; and parent conversations.

Students had already taken this momentum to the streets in early June of 2020. Led by the Black Student Union, a peaceful protest march against racial injustice and violence was organized for the Lycée community and attended by over 150 people. Among the speakers at the event was seventh grader Emily on her 13th birthday, proclaiming, “We can beat this corrupt system. We must fight for what’s right, and I hope that you will continue fighting, and that this will not be your last march, because we still have a long way to go!”

Now in eighth grade, Emily and several others continue to march. At the beginning of the new school year, eighth-grade delegates made a commitment to anti-racism education and awareness. For them, it was a no-brainer.

“We’re just playing our part to ensure more inclusion and acceptance of diversity,” said Salome, one of the delegates.

Most came wanting to learn from each other, share experiences, and grow as anti-racist individuals.

They also recognized they couldn't do this alone.

They are also working hard to make their plans feasible in this pandemic-created digital world. “It’s about starting within the eighth-grade community,” said Sébastien.

“We want to make it clear that this is affecting our friends and community members, and that we’re all in this together. It’s not just about social media.”

It is certainly about much more than social media. In the fall of 2020, lycéen.n.es worked with the Coalition—our umbrella group for all DEI student activities—and faculty advisors Portia Morrell and Pauline Dorio to start a series of workshops for Secondary students. Bridging the gap between the curriculum and social justice, the DEI workshops give students room to talk about issues that interest them.

Launched on October 2, sessions thus far have addressed such topics as religious diversity, LGBTQ+ identities, mental health and more.

According to Jamie Laurens, Dean of the Middle School, the workshops have been an immense success. “We start with how students learn about themselves in the Primary, and use that as building blocks for how they learn about community in Middle School, and then the world in Lycée,” she

said. “Amid all that, it’s about teaching with respect to how bias is built within societal systems of character development and learning environments.”

Faculty and staff are now focusing systematically on the issue of equity.

Led by 14 faculty and staff members from across the Lycée, the school’s DEI Committee works toward building an inclusive, equitable school community, and creating an environment in which we can all grow and thrive. At the end of the 2019-2020 school year, task forces were formed, defining four goals and solutions for the community in the years ahead.

Any solutions that aim to support students also require the support of parents. Lycée parents rose to the occasion—forming several affinity groups—including Parents of Color, Jewish Parents, Muslim Parents, and LGBTQ+ Parents—wherein they can hold discussions and lobby for change. The best-attended group by far has been that of White Allies— Most come wanting to learn from others, share experiences and grow as anti-racist individuals. Above all, they recognized that none of them is in this alone.

The Association des Parents du Lycée (APL) took charge. They have worked with staff to moderate the spaces, set readings for the groups and bring everyone to the table. Their challenge lay within the uniquely multicultural nature of the Lycée— to bring together the American approach of celebrating differences and the French one of universalism.

Of their efforts, APL Co-President Emmanuelle Guillant said, “The work we are doing is a fascinating case study of how the Lycée is a laboratory for meaningful discussions from diverse cultural perspectives.

L’esprit d’école a profondément marqué l’année scolaire 2019-2020. Entrant dans le monde adulte dans un pays secoué par la mort violente de George Floyd, les élèves ont créé le compte Instagram Black@lycée, où parents, élèves et membres du personnel noirs ont pu se réunir pour panser leurs blessures. Cet espace a permis de susciter une véritable prise de conscience parmi les membres de la communauté non noire. Le compte Instagram a fait ressortir les projets de diversité, d’équité et d’inclusion (DEI) jusque-là peu ou mal connus, ainsi que les réunions où ont participé principalement des employés de couleur, celles des clubs de lycéens, et les conversations avec les parents.

Cette dynamique avait déjà poussé nos élèves dans la rue au début du mois de juin 2020. Menée par la Black Student Union, une manifestation pacifique contre l’injustice et la violence raciales avait rassemblé plus

de 150 personnes. Emily, qui était alors en cinquième et fêtait ses 13 ans, était intervenue lors de l’événement : « Nous pouvons mettre fin à ce système corrompu. Nous devons nous battre pour ce qui est juste, et j’espère que vous continuerez à vous battre et que ce ne sera pas votre dernière marche, car il nous reste encore un long chemin à parcourir ! » Désormais en quatrième, Emily et plusieurs autres élèves continuent de participer à des manifestations. Au début de l’année scolaire, les délégués de quatrième se sont mobilisés pour lutter contre le racisme, en passant par un travail de sensibilisation. « Notre rôle est de faire en sorte que la diversité soit pleinement acceptée », a déclaré Salomé, l’une des déléguées.

La plupart d'entre eux sont venus aux réunions pour y apprendre au contact des autres, partager leurs expériences, et progresser dans leur lutte contre le racisme.

Ils travaillent d’arrache-pied pour réaliser leurs projets dans le contexte du monde virtuel que la pandémie a créé. « Il s’agit de commencer au sein de la communauté des élèves de quatrième », explique Sébastien. « Il est important que tout le monde prenne conscience que cela arrive à nos amis et aux membres de notre communauté, et que nous sommes tous dans le même bateau. Ce n’est pas juste sur les réseaux sociaux. » En effet, le mouvement dépasse largement les réseaux sociaux. À l’automne 2020, les lycéen.n.es ont travaillé avec la Coalition (notre groupe de DEI des élèves) et les enseignantes Portia Morell et Pauline Dorio afin de lancer une série d’ateliers destinés

aux élèves du Secondaire. En créant un lien entre le cursus scolaire et la justice sociale, les ateliers DEI permettent aux élèves d’aborder des sujets qui les intéressent. La première édition, inaugurée le 2 octobre dernier, portait, entre autres, sur la diversité religieuse, les questions LGBTQ+ et la santé mentale.

Pour Jamie Laurens, Dean of the Middle School, les ateliers ont été un immense succès. « Nous nous appuyons sur la façon dont les élèves apprennent à se connaître en primaire, puis sur la manière dont ils apprennent à connaître la communauté au collège, et le monde au lycée », a-t-elle déclaré. « Dans ce contexte, il s’agit d’enseigner en tenant compte de la manière dont les préjugés se construisent dans la société et de la façon dont ils influent sur le développement de la personnalité et sur les conditions d’apprentissage. » A présent, enseignants et personnel du Lycée mettent l’accent systématiquement sur la question de l’équité. Dirigé par 14 membres du corps enseignant et du personnel de l’école, le Comité DEI s’efforce de construire une communauté scolaire inclusive et équitable. À la fin de l’année scolaire 20192020, quatre nouveaux groupes de travail ont défini quatre objectifs et solutions pour la communauté dans les années à venir.

Les solutions visant à soutenir les élèves, nécessitent l’appui des parents, et ces derniers ont relevé le défi en formant des groupes d’affinité pour discuter et encourager le changement, notamment des groupes de parents de couleur, parents juifs, parents musulmans et parents LGBTQ+. Le groupe le plus fréquenté, et de loin, était celui des « White allies » (alliés blancs). La plupart d’entre eux sont venus aux réunions pour y apprendre au contact des autres, partager leurs expériences, et progresser dans leur lutte contre le racisme.

today, and to make sure that all students who walk through the Lycée halls see their particular history and heritage celebrated.”

As all this work continues—ultimately to ensure that current and future generations of Lycée students get to learn and grow in an environment that, as the Trustees wrote, “embraces our mosaic of differences and is committed to eradicating racism, and to building an empathetic anti-racist community free of prejudice and bias of any kind”—is it enough, and will it be enough?

If the community continues to work together and bring everyone along, it just might be.

En raison de la nature multiculturelle unique du Lycée, ils ont dû relever le défi de concilier l’approche américaine, qui consiste à célébrer la différence, et l’approche universaliste française.

Emmanuelle Guillant, co-présidente de l’APL, a déclaré à propos de leurs efforts: « Le travail que nous effectuons montre à quel point le Lycée est un laboratoire générateur de discussions importantes où se côtoient des perspectives culturelles diverses. Nous essayons de comprendre comment le poids de l’histoire nous influence aujourd’hui, et de rendre hommage à l’histoire et à la culture de tous les enfants qui fréquentent les bancs du Lycée. »

What the Lycée Has Meant to Us

Alejandra Lopez Kluger, Lycée parent As I sit in this beautiful room, next to the other families of students admitted to this prestigious school, I can feel myself getting anxious at the thought of leaving my baby, my secondborn, in the care of this group of extraordinary people. Led by the admissions director in a well-curated presentation, some teachers and other school leaders introduce the Lycée Français de New York to us parents. I marvel at the unique opportunities this school can offer my daughter. Misty-eyed, I reach out for my daughter’s hand, and she immediately stops me cold and whispers: “Mami, you are embarrassing me!”…Wait, WHAT?!…

I blink to refocus, and—fast-forward!— I am actually sitting at a welcome session at an American university. Our daughter Paloma just turned 18, she is a graduating student at the Lycée, and this is just one of the many colleges that has offered her admission. How did we get here?!

It all started 17 years ago, when our firstborn was three, and she got “the call” from Madame Lala, the Lycée’s admissions director, saying she had an “interview” for a spot in the nursery school. My husband and I are not French; my speaking is a fractured, intermediate French; and neither of us has any affiliation with France except for our love of French cuisine, especially pâtisseries, and a passion for Paris. Nevertheless, we went on a lark and applied—late—for entrance.

When Elisa got in, we were overjoyed. As a bilingual (English, Spanish) and binational (American, Mexican) couple, we wanted a true global environment in which she could grow, develop and benefit from an education without borders—where she would be nurtured to become whatever she wanted to be, anywhere in the world.

From the start, the Lycée gave us confidence that our firstborn, and soon enough both our girls, would be cared for, safe and gently pushed to excel in who they are. By the end, all our expectations were surpassed. In addition to the countless unique in-classroom experiences—tasting salmon roulade prepared by Michelin-starred chef Eric Ripert; honoring and meeting World War II heroes, both French and American; hearing world-renowned authors (and Lycée alumni) such as Amélie Nothomb speak—there were the amazing local trips to extraordinary places, such as the DNA Learning Center at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, that we parents were lucky enough to chaperone. And there were the student-driven marches to support social justice, including participation in the yearly AIDS Walk New York, and the 2018 anti-guns March for Our Lives in New York, where Lycée students, French flags in hand, and families proudly joined the demand for gun control.

We had terrific fun at community events such as the Fall Festival and Spring Fair (which I had the privilege of chairing three times!), the many parent cocktails and the unforgettable galas (chatting with Jean Paul Gaultier!). But what remains in mind and heart for both our daughters is the memory of their teachers—who saw them through with caring and câlins, mending a scraped knee, wiping away tears, making them laugh; who helped them dream and think beyond what they thought was possible; who inspired them to go into a field of study they never expected to enjoy or even pursue. In one way or another, all their teachers helped them realize they could simply and fully be who they are.
