Message from the Head of School

Dear LFCDS Family, One of the many highlights of my week occurs every Wednesday when I have the opportunity to join a table of Senior Kindergarteners for lunch.

We still value family-style meals at Lake Forest Country Day School, and it’s a pleasure to sit with some of our youngest students, who are friendly enough to welcome me, a strange new adult, to their table each week.

The ritual of lunch, like so much of what we do at LFCDS, is also a carefully designed educational and community experience. Everyone has a job to do, a contribution to make. As the adult at my table, I’m expected to distribute the food (while wearing a smile and almost clownishly large plastic gloves), teach good table manners, ask about all the goings-on in SK these days, and supervise all the other eager helpers at the table. One student delivers the milk for all the milkdrinkers (red carton or blue, organic either way), another fetches dessert (almost always fruit, but cookies, with great fanfare, make an occasional appearance), another takes up everyone’s plates to be cleaned, another sweeps the floor around the table, and the last tablemate has the coveted job of “spray and wipe” (coveted more for the privilege of spraying a water bottle than for wiping down the table, of course). Perhaps my favorite ritual of each lunch begins when Mrs. Hempen, the music teacher to our youngest students, puts on a musical selection for us all to listen to, on the condition that we all eat our food silently and listen. Now, this is a uniquely joyous time, despite everyone being on mute. I bet your lunch doesn’t involve seeing kindergarteners dance and bop their heads to Ella Fitzgerald classics.

Mine, I’m glad to report, often does.

Lunch must be the most frequent of our many community experiences, so frequent, in fact, that it might be easy to overlook it as a central community experience.

And if LFCDS is good at many things (as indeed it is), it is especially good at bringing people together as a community.

I bet your lunch doesn’t involve seeing kindergarteners dance and bop their heads to Ella Fitzgerald classics.

Mine, I’m glad to report, often does.

Each fall semester we gather for Family Movie Night in the Courtyard and Family Reading Night in the Atrium. We come together for our larger, more formal fall assemblies: the Veterans Day Assembly, when we pay tribute to those brave men and women who have defended our country and our values; our Thanksgiving Assembly, when students, faculty, young alumni, and families come together to express gratitude through speech and song; and our Holiday Assembly, the final part of our Family Visiting Day program before we disperse for the fun

and rest of Winter Break. Each of these events carries a certain community beauty.

Though quite grand in scale, they are, like the lowly, quotidian lunch rituals, carefully designed and prepared experiences that teach our students what community membership looks like, sounds like, and feels like.

It’s remarkable to me how smoothly and successfully a growth-oriented institution like LFCDS can preserve and honor its traditions. Having known many independent schools, I have never seen such thoughtfully designed gatherings as those I’ve come to know at LFCDS. To bring people together so that we all can learn and reflect is to fulfill our mission as a school community. As we embark on a new school year and look back on the one that has just passed, let us celebrate all that LFCDS preserves of its traditions and all the ways that our school creates new possibilities for the years ahead.

The Board of Trustees of LFCDS is a voluntary body that is responsible for the School and for the welfare of the students and faculty. The board plans, develops, and establishes policy and regularly assesses the performance of the School.

With the guidance of the Head of School, the board establishes the School’s mission, develops the strategic plan, and formulates general policies. It monitors and supports the administration’s progress in carrying out the plan. The board is responsible for the School’s financial condition and physical plant. The board approves the annual operating and capital budgets, receives an annual review of the School’s financial operations and assets, monitors its financial management, and ensures that the physical plant serves the School’s programs. The work of the trustees is carried on primarily in small committees to ensure a thorough study and discussion of policy matters. Throughout the year, board members volunteer countless hours actively engaged with the School and developing effective strategies for addressing the School’s needs, serving the School’s mission, and benefiting the LFCDS community as a whole.

Welcome Our New Trustees Alex Goldfayn

Gillian Growdon

Alex Goldfayn is the CEO of Evangelist Marketing Institute, LLC., a revenue growth consultancy for businesses and clients who want to grow quickly. He is an internationally renowned speaker and the Wall Street Journal best-selling author of Selling Boldly: Applying The New Science of Positive Psychology To Dramatically Increase Your Confidence, Happiness & Sales and The Revenue Growth Habit: The Simple Art of Growing Your Business by 15% in 15 Minutes A Day. The expertise Alex brings to the board includes strategic planning, marketing and communications, competitive analysis, business development, and branding.

Alex attended Stevenson High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in pre-med psychology from Illinois Wesleyan University. He and his wife, Lisa, their twins, Bella ’23 and Noah ’23, and pup, Abe, live in Lake Forest.

Gillian Growdon is the Executive Vice President of Shareholder Relations at MacLean-Fogg Company. She attended the Loomis Chaffee School after which she earned a degree in geography from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. Gillian’s areas of expertise include strategic planning, financial management, fundraising, and marketing. She currently serves on the board at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and is Board Chair for Random Acts of Flowers. In addition, Gillian served on the board at Trinity School in Menlo, CA. Gillian attended LFCDS from Senior Kindergarten through Grade 3, and she and her husband, John, have three children who currently attend the School — Stewart ’21, Reese ’22, and Lewis ’25. At LFCDS, Gillian has served as a room parent and as a committee member for both the Live Auction and the Capital Campaign. The Growdon family resides in Lake Forest.

Chip Grace Chip Grace is a co-founding partner of May River Capital, a Chicago-based private equity firm focused on lower middle market industrial growth businesses. Prior to starting May River Capital in 2012, Chip was a managing director at Wynnchurch Capital and also worked in leveraged finance and investment banking at GE Capital, Salomon Smith Barney, and A.G. Edwards & Sons. Chip holds a bachelor of arts from Duke University and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Chip lives in Lake Bluff with his wife, Emily, and their two children, Elizabeth ’22 and Charles ’25.

Mimi Murley Mimi Murley and her husband, Bob, have an affiliation with LFCDS that runs deep.

Their son Robert Scott Murley attended the School through Grade 7, and daughters, Mary Clarissa Murley Doyle ’99 and Megan Burchfield Murley Olson ’02, are graduates.

Mimi’s grandson, William Doyle, joined LFCDS’s Senior Kindergarten Class of 2028 this fall. At LFCDS, Mimi served as a room parent, Annual Giving class agent, and Time Travelers teacher. Mimi

co-chaired the 20th Annual Auction: 2001 Space Odyssey, and she and Bob received the 2002 Bondy Hodgkins Award for Volunteerism in recognition of their outstanding commitment to volunteer service as LFCDS parents.

Mimi earned her BA in English literature from Princeton University and her MBA from Columbia University. She has served on several boards including both the Founders and Foundation boards of Lurie Children’s Hospital; Princeton University; the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where she chaired the 2019 Symphony Ball; Forward Movement; and Seabury Theological Seminary. Mimi has volunteered at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest on numerous committees, as a Warden, and in the Vestry. She has been active in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, where she chaired the Gala Ball. Mimi brings to the board expertise in fundraising, event leadership, and business management.

Robyn Rosenblatt Born and raised in Highland Park, Robyn Rosenblatt earned her AB from Washington University in St. Louis and her Masters in Architectura (M Arch) from Harvard University.

She is currently on the Board of Overseers for the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology. Robyn brings to the LFCDS board her strength in design and the creative process. She and her husband, Sami, currently reside in Highland Park with their children, Estelle (Esti) ’20 and Soloman (Sy) ’21.

New Faculty & Staff Excellence in education begins with caring, inspiring, and engaging professionals who display a lifelong passion for learning and an endless dedication to our students, families, and each other. At LFCDS we take great pride in our faculty and staff. They are talented leaders who possess a remarkable understanding of how children learn. They work together as a community to provide an academically stimulating program focused on each individual student’s needs in order to produce students of strong character with a passion for learning.

LFCDS is delighted to welcome several new faculty and staff members into our community this year, and below we get to know each one a little better.

Donna Culhane School Librarian

Paw Prints: What is your favorite memory of school as a child?

Donna Culhane: Sitting on the red carpet in Ms. Weber’s secondgrade classroom listening to stories and doing the “Monster Mash.” Also, in first grade, during the week before spring break, we listened to the audio recording of The Cinnamon Bear.

PP: What was your favorite subject or class?

DC: I’ve always loved history and political science.

PP: What inspires you?

DC: Meeting people who’ve overcome very difficult times in their life and have remained optimistic.

PP: What are you currently reading or who is your favorite author?

DC: Oh, that’s the hardest question ever!

How much time do you have? Right now I am reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah and Spaced Out by Stuart Gibbs.

PP: Do you have a favorite podcast?

DC: Pop Culture Happy Hour and But Why.

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

DC: A senator, a lawyer, and an actress.

PP: Cat or dog?

DC: Both!

PP: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

DC: Ramona Quimby, because she always tried to be the best, and even when she wasn’t she learned from her mistakes and kept her love of learning and adventure.

Kendall Haight

PP: What is the best advice you have received?

DC: My godfather was a refugee from Vietnam, and he told me to work hard and take advantage of all the opportunities I had in life, to be a good person, and help others.

PP: If you could vacation anywhere, where would it be?

DC: The Cinque Terra in Italy or Tokyo, Japan.

Junior Kindergarten Teacher

Paw Prints: What was your favorite subject in school?

Kendall Haight: My favorite subject was English. I have always loved to read.

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

KH: I wanted to be an author.

Who knows? It might still happen!

PP: What is the best advice you have received?

KH: The best advice I think I have ever received is to take chances. In the end, you only regret the things you didn’t do.

That advice has served me well.

PP: If you could vacation anywhere, where would it be?

KH: New Zealand. I have been there twice, and love the amazing natural beauty of the country. I hope to return someday!

PP: What are you currently reading or who is your favorite author?

KH: My favorite author of books for adults is John Irving. For children’s literature, my favorite is Kevin Henkes.

PP: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

KH: Cookie Dough.

PP: Kindle or hardcopy book/ newspaper?

KH: I use both! I love the convenience of being able to purchase a book on my Kindle and start reading right away, but I also love the feeling of a book or newspaper in my hands.

PP: Do you have a favorite podcast?

KH: This American Life, Serial, and Up and Vanished.

PP: Cat or dog?

KH: Dogs all the way! I have a 90-pound golden retriever named Camper.

Kristen Love Preschool Long-Term Substitute Teacher

Paw Prints: What is your favorite memory of school as a child?

Kristen Love: I was homeschooled until seventh grade. My favorite memory was using my swimming pool as P.E.!

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

KM: Many things! But I remember wanting to be “an inventor,” thinking there was one group of people who was responsible for all innovation.

PP: What was your favorite subject or class?

KL: My favorite class was art.

PP: What is the best advice you have received?

KM: “Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.” Theodore Roosevelt didn’t give me this advice himself, of course. But I try to live by this motto and to feel comfortable with giving my best effort with the resources available to me.

PP: Who was your most influential teacher?

KL: My most influential teacher in public school was my first homeroom teacher, Mrs. Baker.

PP: If you could vacation anywhere, where would it be?

KM: There are many places I would still like to visit. Among the few on the top of my list are Banff, Costa Rica, and Croatia.

PP: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

KL: Sea salt caramel!

PP: Pizza: Thin crust or deep dish?

KM: Thin with green olives and artichoke hearts.

PP: Cubs or Sox? KL: GO, CUBS, GO!

PP: What are you currently reading or who is your favorite author?

KM: I’m currently reading Glitter and Glue by Kelly Corrigan.

PP: Winter, spring, summer, or fall?

KL: Summer forever, please! (I grew up in FL.)

David Muniz Paw Prints: What is your favorite memory of school as a child?

David Muniz: When I was in high school, I was invited to play with the Augustana regional honor band. Young musicians from across the Midwest were invited to the Quad Cities for a weekend of music. We practiced the pieces on our

DM: Again, so many cool tools enable so many amazing creative options.

I’ll have to go with the laptop, and possibly a tablet like an iPad. I can turn a computer into a recording studio, a media production bay, a 3D design workstation, etc. The flexibility and connectivity we get from these tools is a gateway to so many possibilities.

PP: Cat or dog?

KL: Dog — we have a Westie named Macklin, and he is the best snuggler!

PP: Cat or dog?

KM: I am a huge dog lover.

Paw Prints: What is your favorite memory of school as a child?

Katie McCarthy: Getting to grow and develop with my good friends, several of whom I am lucky to still be close with and live nearby.

PP: What was your favorite subject or class?

KM: Art and music.

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

DM: I don’t know that there was a specific something I always wanted to be. I wanted to try lots of different things. I used to fantasize about being able to jump into other people’s bodies, just to see what it was like to be them. As a teenager, I wanted to be a musician, but I also found myself wanting to make a difference in the lives of others. I found that I really enjoyed teaching around that time as well.

PP: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

DM: Piscine Molitor Patel from Life of Pi by Yann Martel is one of my favorites.

He seems small, a bit spoiled, but resilient and feisty from a young age. Plus, anyone that can spend so much time lost at sea in a lifeboat with a tiger and survive deserves some admiration. I also really like Meg Murry and Charles Wallace, Sherlock Holmes, Big Brother, Gandalf, Atticus Finch, Gregor Samsa, Wilbur…

PP: Do you have a favorite podcast?

KM: I try to listen to the New York Times daily podcast, The Daily, as often as possible. I also enjoy Zen Parenting Radio.

own before the trip, then spent Friday in sectionals, one rehearsal with the whole band on Friday night, and another on Saturday morning. Saturday night was the performance. We performed one piece by Wagner, “Elsa Procession to the Cathedral,” with such emotion that I could see a tear roll down the cheek of our conductor. I looked around and saw that several of my fellow performers were crying as well. It felt amazing to be a part of that performance. It was a thrill that I will never forget.

PP: What inspires you?

DM: People who share their stories, experiences, emotions, and vulnerability.

DM: “Achoo” Where!? “achoo” They always “achoo” know how to “achoo” find me! “ACHOO!!!!”

PP: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

DM: Apple pie ice cream is like a dream of the best family holidays on your tongue.

Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey is a guilty pleasure that I couldn’t get in Ecuador.

Most chocolate chip cookie dough ice creams are irresistible for me. And Mexican style paletas are great in coconut, mango, watermelon, and strawberry.

PP: Do you have a favorite podcast?

DM: Lots — This American Life, Radiolab, You, the Indicator, Planet Money, Hidden Brain, Throughline, Freakonomics, Invisibilia, ReSound, TED Radio Hour, and 99% Invisible, are in heavy rotation on my commute, and I’d much rather listen to anyone of these than watch most things on TV. I’ve never seen a single episode of Game of Thrones!

PP: Winter, spring, summer, or fall?

DM: All you have to do is call? I think you have to appreciate all of it. There’s nothing like summer in Chicago. I love long days, night swimming, BBQs, and lightning bugs. By the end of the scorching summer, the fall feels like sweet relief, and the changing colors of the leaves and the sunsets always put me in a reflective mood. Winters feel like an adventure we’re going through together.

I love the way the sound of the outside changes after a heavy snowfall. Everything just sounds billowy and soft. After a frigid winter, spring comes with such relief, the renewal of life fills us with so much hope, we all start wearing shorts in 60-degree weather. I lived in L.A. for a few years in my twenties, and, having grown up in Chicago, I feel like I didn’t notice the time

Paw Prints: What is your favorite memory of school as a child?

Dick Paulus: Walking to school every day with my best friend, Tommy Laturno.

PP: What was your favorite subject or class?

DP: Literature.

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

DP: An architect (like Mr. Brady from “The Brady Bunch”).

PP: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

DP: Don Quixote because he tirelessly worked to right the wrongs in the world.

PP: Early bird or night owl?

DP: Early bird, of course.

PP: What is the best advice you have received?

DP: Whatever you do, do your best.

PP: What is your favorite movie?

DP: Casablanca.

PP: What is your favorite piece of technology?

DP: The cat laser.

PP: What inspires you?

DP: The success of others.

PP: Pizza: Thin crust or deep dish?

DP: Deep dish with mushrooms, green peppers, and black olives.

PP: What are you currently reading or who is your favorite author?

DP: I’m currently reading Becoming by Michelle Obama, but my favorite author in grade school was Edgar Allen Poe. PP: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

DP: Rocky Road.

PP: Kindle or hardcopy book/ newspaper?

DP: Hardcopy, and not just because you can’t make an airplane or hat with a Kindle.

PP: Cubs or Sox? DP: Is that even a choice? Cubs, of course.

PP: Cat or dog?

DP: I’ve always loved dogs, but currently we have two cats, Holly and Pip.

Amelia Solava ESP Teacher

Paw Prints: What is your favorite memory of school as a child?

Amelia Sloava: My favorite memory was pajama day because we would gather on the floor with pillows and blankets and watch a movie as a class.

PP: What was your favorite subject or class?

AS: English, because I really enjoyed reading and writing.

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

TS: I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and use to play school with my friends growing up.

PP: Who was your most influential teacher?

AS: My kindergarten teacher; she made every day feel like a new adventure.

PP: Early bird or night owl?

AS: I am definitely a night owl. I love to stay up late.

PP: If you could vacation anywhere, where would it be?

AS: Paris, France — it has always been a dream of mine to visit one day.

PP: What is your favorite movie?

AS: Disney’s Cinderella. It was my favorite movie when I was younger and continues to be today.

PP: What inspires you?

AS: My family inspires me, especially all nine of my nieces and nephews.

PP: Pizza: Thin crust or deep dish?

AS: Both. I love every type of pizza.

PP: What are you currently reading or who is your favorite author?

AS: I am currently reading Everybody Always by Bob Goff.

PP: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

AS: Birthday cake is my favorite ice cream flavor.

PP: Winter, spring, summer, or fall?

AS: Summer. I love the warm weather and enjoy being outside as often as I can.

PP: Cat or dog?

AS: I love both, but I currently own a dog.

Tracie Tatz Director of Bands

Paw Prints: What is your favorite memory of school as a child?

Tracie Tatz: I always loved school, so I don’t think I can pinpoint a favorite memory. I know I was really proud of getting to play the recorder accompaniment to a song my peers sang in the fourth-grade choir concert.

I also vividly remember my first notes on trumpet. But some of the teachers I had in my core classes also helped shape me into the person I am today. School was always my happy place.

PP: What was your favorite subject or class?

TT: I always loved band and music but also really enjoyed English and social studies. I always had great teachers who were good at telling stories that made those classes come to life.

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

TT: For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. By middle school, I knew I wanted to teach music!

PP: Who is your favorite literary character and why?

TT: Hermione Granger. I grew up with the Harry Potter series and I loved the fact that she was always true to herself, her love of learning, and was also so brave.

PP: Early bird or night owl?

TT: I am definitely a morning person.

A fun fact is that I have never consumed a cup of coffee either!

PP: If you could vacation anywhere, where would it be?

TT: One of my goals is to travel to Peru and climb Machu Picchu.

PP: What is your favorite movie?

TT: The Lion King!

PP: What inspires you?

TT: Good people, quality conversation, and listening to music all inspire me.

PP: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

TT: Mint chocolate chip.

PP: Kindle or hardcopy book/ newspaper?

TT: I love hardcopy books. The feeling of holding the book and turning the pages will never be replaced by my tablets.

PP: Cubs or Sox? TT: Cubs! I bleed red and Cubbie blue!

2019 Summer Professional Development It is part of our mission at LFCDS to instill in our students a lifelong passion for learning. We take great pride in learning and growing alongside our students. Many LFCDS faculty and staff spend time during the summer months engaged in professional development with the goal of ensuring our students are receiving the most innovative, effective, nurturing, and comprehensive education available.

41st Annual Early Childhood Conference, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Sue Buhrmester, 1st STEP Teacher Erin Jantsch, Preschool Teacher Robin Fox, Interim Dean of Early Childhood at UW-Whitewater, shared the importance of having difficult conversations with children, family members, and other adults. She outlined tools and strategies to use to ensure these conversations are effective, productive, and beneficial to all parties involved in the conversation.

I led a breakout session titled “Activating Ambassadors” and facilitated a discussion for about 30 participants about the best ways to leverage faculty/staff, student, parent, and alumni perspectives as part of a school’s internal and external marketing strategies.

A Passion for Podcasting When I was 18 years old, I moved to England and worked at a boarding school for a year before starting University. The year was 1994, and I had not yet heard of email or the Internet. I had to make friends quickly because I was a long way from home and calling Australia was extremely expensive! One of the boarding masters at the school had a book on his shelf by Dale Carnegie called How to Win Friends & Influence People.

That kind of listening is one of the highest compliments we can pay anyone.” As a nervous 18-year-old, I eagerly followed Mr. Carnegie’s advice. In no time, I found that I was able to speak to anyone, at any time, because people indeed appreciate others listening to them and asking follow-up questions. I quickly found that everyone has an absolutely fascinating story to share.

This was the first “self-improvement” book I had ever read, and it changed my life forever. Mr. Carnegie wrote that the key to being a good conversationalist was being a good listener. He wrote, “I had listened intently. I had listened because I

Over the last 25 years, I have loved meeting new people and asking them questions to better understand what they think, why they do what they do, and how they have overcome the inevitable obstacles that were set in their paths.

In 2005, I started listening to podcasts, and since that time I have loved absorbing thousands of podcast interviews with people from all walks of life.

I have been fortunate enough to work at some excellent schools around the world and have always been humbled by incredible stories of those in the communities in which I have worked.

A few years ago, I began thinking about how I should create a podcast to share the stories I have gathered during my time at LFCDS. I asked our Director of Innovation Greg McDonough to help me with my dream of launching an LFCDS community podcast. Greg and I bought some excellent podcasting equipment and watched videos online about podcasting, and I worked through an online podcasting course.

We limped along, hoping to launch the LFCDS podcast in the fall of 2019. That was when David Muniz joined LFCDS as our Director of Technology. David had produced podcasts in the past and had also worked in audio production. David propelled us forward and had us fully utilizing our equipment and producing episodes that sounded professional.

Launching our podcast has been a dream come true, and it could not have happened without the support of Greg and David.

Our goal is to produce a long-form podcast that captures the fascinating people who make up the LFCDS community.

Our first few episodes highlight stories from LFCDS parents, faculty, and even alumni. We hope you enjoy the LFCDS Community Podcast which you can listen to on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Stitcher. Grade 4 Graduation

Grade 4 students MJ Fox, Coleman Keller, Lucas Rosen, Sienna Szechinski, and Liberty Whidden kicked off a very special morning as they spoke about their Lower School experience at a reception for graduating fourth-grade students and their families in the Early Childhood Center (ECC). Immediately following, in the newly renovated Performing Arts Center (PAC), Lower School and ECC teachers delivered heartfelt, and sometimes humorous, words outlining each Grade 4 student’s shining attributes. Head of Lower School Pete Moore closed out the beautiful ceremony by congratulating the students on their move to the Upper School. Grade 3 students formed a bridge for their peers to cross as Head of Upper School Andy Sperling congratulated each student with a handshake, and faculty members lined the hallway to welcome the students to Upper School.

The LFCDS Graduation Ceremony is a beautiful reflection on the time students have spent at the School. It is a time to celebrate the bonds students have formed both with their teachers and with each other while looking ahead to life’s next adventure.

On Thursday, June 13, the chilly, rainy weather couldn’t dampen the spirit of celebration as we honored our eighth-grade students with a touching and memorable graduation ceremony in the Gymnasium. The morning included opening remarks by Head of School Joy Hurd, faculty bookplate readings for each graduating student, and closing words by Andy Sperling, Head of Upper School. Graduates Ben Arthurs and Evalyn Lee spoke poignantly on their years at LFCDS. Board Chair Dr. Ahmed Farag presented the annual Bondy Hodgkins Award to LFCDS parent volunteers Nick Alexos, Fred and Jacqueline Wacker, and Elizabeth Walvoord for their outstanding service to the school community.

The Alexander C. Bell Drama Prize

This award is named in loving memory of Mary Ballard, a former LFCDS teacher, mother, and tireless volunteer. Through the generosity of those close to Mary, the Community Service Award recipient receives $500 intended not for him or her, but to donate to an organization of his or her own choosing. For Mary, the real gift was not in receiving but in giving. The intent of this presentation is to honor a student who, like Mary, acted above and beyond what was required by the community service program. The recipient must demonstrate leadership and a commitment to serve others with respect and compassion.

This prize is awarded annually by the drama faculty to the graduate(s) who demonstrates through his or her efforts, the outstanding characteristics of the Bells’ interest in, and support of, the dramatic arts.

The Davies Music Prize This award was established in 1967 by Mr. and Mrs. William B. Davies, whose daughters Robin, Pam, and Barlee contributed significantly to the musical life of Lake Forest Country Day School.

The recipients are nominated by the music faculty and are awarded this year to two students who display, along with innate musical abilities, a spirit of enthusiasm and loyalty.

Bondy Hodgkins Award for Distinguished Volunteer Service Established in 1985, the award recognizes Mrs. Hodgkins’ remarkable commitment to volunteer service as a parent of LFCDS, including 13 years on the Board of Trustees, the last four of which she served as President. A strong sense of parent involvement is a hallmark of our school, and we take great pride in celebrating the time as well as energy our parents dedicate each year to make so much possible for our students and teachers.

It is with enduring gratitude that all of us at LFCDS congratulate our 2019 Bondy Hodgkins award winners, Nick Alexos, Fred ’74 and Jacqueline Wacker, and Elizabeth Walvoord.

Nick Alexos’s broad-based leadership involvement has been instrumental in carrying out strategic initiatives and providing guidance to the school with financial best practices. He served on the board as a trustee for six years, and after his board term ended, he contributed significant amounts of time and expertise to strengthen the school’s investments as chair of the investment sub-committee.

His strategic vision and input has been critical to the finance, development, investment, and master planning committees. As a capital campaign co-chair, he was at the forefront of planning the recently achieved $12 million capital campaign that brought

us the Innovation Lab, renovated PAC, refurbished gymnasium, and strengthened our endowment.

Award recipients Fred ’74 and Jacqueline Wacker have had a transformative impact on LFCDS. Jacqueline always responds with a “yes” when she is asked to step in and volunteer.

She is a true go-getter and will go out of her way to get things done without fail.

She is passionate and tackles tasks with purpose. She has been involved in the School in so many capacities, including as a room parent, class agent, classroom volunteer, Parent Association council member, events co-chair, homecoming chair, and dedicated auction volunteer, including being an auction co-chair of the Day School Drive-In. Her support of the School when her husband was board chair is truly unequaled, and together as a team, this couple sacrificed countless hours of

time and effort to keep LFCDS moving in the right direction.

In addition to vision and leadership, Fred has provided a road map, which set the stage for LFCDS’s success over the last six years. As a member of the Board of Trustees for nine years, the last four of which he was board president, Fred helped steer the LFCDS ship forward. He never relented in working to make LFCDS a better place for the children, and for the faculty and staff. His incredible integrity, inclusive leadership, high level of emotional intelligence, and immeasurable number of volunteer hours led us into a new chapter. His extraordinary involvement and selfless dedication has benefited the students, faculty, staff, and families associated with LFCDS for generations to come.

All in, all the time, Elizabeth Walvoord is intentional and fully committed to getting things done in the best way possible. She has been incredibly giving of her time and talents across the School for 13 years. She is artistic and creative.

As a volunteer, her creative gifts have transformed our spaces, and she has produced unimaginable masterpieces that have brightened our hallways.

From auction decorations, to classroom activities, to drama productions, she has led each of these adventures with an extraordinary sense of inclusion and an exceptionally kind soul. All with the goal of creating the best experiences possible for the children.

Alumni Spotlight

Karisma Chhabria ’11 Long before settling as an adult in Lake Forest, a young boy spent his formative years in the Parel neighborhood of Bombay, now Mumbai, in India.

It was an industrial area burgeoning with textile mills and the hope of prosperity and growth. The boy could never have imagined that a generation later, his daughter would return to the region on a Fulbright Scholarship with the dream of weaving together her passion for medicine with her drive to ensure better health for young mothers and babies in India.

Karisma Chhabria ’11 graduated from Brown University in May with a concentration in Biochemistry and a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research on maternal-fetal health and the human microbiome in India. “The lab where I will be working is in the same neighborhood where my father grew up,” she said. “It’s such a coincidence, but really there are so many common factors in my life that are falling into place.”

Karisma has been accepted to Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, where she will begin her training in July to become an obstetrician and gynecologist. “A lot of histories are colliding. My mother was very inspiring to me — she was a labor and delivery nurse — and she was treated for cancer at Northwestern Hospital,” she said. “I remember feeling that even through all of the challenging times, there was still hope there in the cancer ward.”

It is hope that Karisma will carry with her into her research this year, as she helps to catalogue the diversity of microbes between racial and ethnic groups and the incidence of pre-term births. The goal is to ultimately develop a test that could determine whether or not women, particularly those with limited access to medical care, are at risk for having a pre-term birth.

Karisma generously sat down with Paw Prints — just days before leaving for Mumbai — to reflect on her LFCDS experience.

In Upper School, there were so many things we studied, like simple machines, robotics, the bridge project, the rollercoaster project, and even the Robbie Bermingingham Speaking Contest — LFCDS offered a comfortable space to fail and try again, an opportunity to try new things and learn and grow.

Paw Prints: What is your favorite LFCDS memory?

Karisma Chhabria: There are so many great memories, and really they are all additive. I remember being in Mrs. Crofts’s science class, and we were learning about the scientific method. Mrs. Crofts said that for extra credit, we could write a lab report about anything. I think about that now and realize it is such an ingenious idea, because that’s essentially what all researchers do — they think up a lab experiment, write up a lab report on what they’ve found, and then publish it. Instilling that sense of independence and encouraging us to be go-getters is something that has really stuck with me.

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

KC: For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a doctor. Actually, I think in my Junior Kindergarten journal it says that I wanted to be a dancer!

PP: What was your favorite class at LFCDS? KC: I had so many great classes and teachers — Mr. Crofts, Mrs. Caldwell, Mr. Arthur, Mr. Stuckslager, the list just goes on and on. Mr. Sperling… oh my gosh, just the other day I was clearing out space on my computer, and I found this old video we did for Mr. Sperling’s eighthgrade algebra II class. It was a music video on conic sections — he just had such a great teaching style. And Mrs. McCauley with fifth-grade statistics — I didn’t realize how useful that would be. Statistics is probably the most direct application of math that we have to use, especially in medicine.

PP: What is the biggest innovation so far in your lifetime?

KC: I think the smartphone has really changed our society — even for telemedicine. For example, when you learn CPR, it is really difficult to get real-time feedback on how well someone is doing compressions unless you have a very specialized mannequin. But these days they have a smartphone app that connects to a sensor in the mannequin, and you can see on your smartphone how deep your compressions are going and how fast they are. In places like India, where it can take an hour or more for an ambulance to respond, CPR really is life-saving. I read somewhere that

I guess I would have to say that Mrs. Crofts’s science class was probably my favorite. I first studied biochemistry in her class, which is what I went on to major in at Brown. I really believe the preparation and study skills I learned at LFCDS have helped me to be successful.

more people in the world have access to a smartphone than have access to a bathroom.

PP: What is the best advice you have received?

KC: You know, I can be sitting at the library at school, and I’ll think about Mr. Baeseman ending every class with, “Go make a positive difference in the world.” I really do feel like I owe it all to my teachers. They have been mentors and advisors.

PP: If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

KC: Really ever since I was little I’ve wanted to live in India. I remember relatives telling me they thought I would change my mind after visiting, but I went in 2015 and came back saying, “Guess what? I still want to live in India!” So to have this opportunity is incredible. I talked to an Ob/Gyn who takes medical trips each year to different countries. So, I think long-term, while I’d like to come back here, my goal would be to go back into a situation where you can perform a procedure that might really improve someone’s quality of life and share some of the research and resources we have here.

PP: What is your favorite song?

KC: Anything by Coldplay!

PP: Favorite movie?

KC: Anything Bollywood — I grew up with Bollywood!

PP: Book?

KC: Anything by Jhumpa Lahiri, author of the books Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake, among many others.

Her style of writing is just so real.

Rick Phillips, the founding owner and principal designer of Frederick Phillips & Associates (FPA), is pleased to announce that a house he designed and built, known as the Glade House (2006), appears in the new, third edition of the book, Chicago’s World-Class Architecture: Chicago Architecture and Design by Jay Pridmore and George Larson (Abrams, 2018). Glade House is located in Lake Forest and affectionately known in Lake Forest circles as “the tree house” and “the bird house.” Rick’s Glade House might appear traditional but when viewed as a whole, parts of the structure seem to float.

The house won a National Housing Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2009. It’s also been published in 21st Century Houses: 150 of the World’s Best, 1000X Architecture of the Americas, and Collection, U.S. Architecture. Rick was inducted into the AIA’s College of Fellows in 1996 and served as an adjunct professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago from 2008 to 2012 while teaching an advanced studio class on urban modular housing.

FPA’s many national and local awards include national AIA Housing Awards, Chicago AIA Distinguished Building Awards, Architectural Record Magazine Record Awards, and Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards. The firm’s projects include a residential conservation development (Deerpath Farm), a performing arts theater (Trueblood Performing Arts Center), a place of worship, a water-based recreational and entertainment facility, a variety of residences, and a senior living community.

Ashley and her husband, Rahul Kadakia, welcomed their third child on June 11, 2019. Spencer weighed in at 8 lbs. 1 oz. and has been welcomed into the family by his two older siblings.

Deanna graduated in May 2019 from George Washington University with a BBA degree in International Business and Marketing and a minor in Spanish.

She graduated summa cum laude and was a recipient of the DSP Scholarship Key Award, which is awarded to the student graduating with the highest cumulative GPA in Business Administration or Economics. She was also the first recipient of the GW-CIBER International Business Award. She plans to work for Medline Industries as an associate product manager in the company’s European headquarters in the Netherlands after graduation.

Lizzy (Bollinger) Kline ’00 Lizzy and her husband, Jeff, welcomed their son, Howard Benedict Kline, on July 13, 2019. Affectionately called Howie, he weighed 7lbs, 14 oz and measured 21 inches long. He joins big sister, Jane.

Peter Hunter ’01 Peter and wife, Sarah, welcomed their second baby boy, Charles “Charlie” Lewis Hunter, born September 9, 2019.

He weighed 7 lbs, 11 oz. Sarah is also a former Preschool teacher here at LFCDS.

student here at LFCDS until 1954 when he moved to New York after second grade. This was his first visit to LFCDS since then. He was amazed to see all the incredible changes to the School but also that parts seemed almost exactly the same.

He brought his STEPS yearbooks with him and shared stories including those of getting shots for polio in what is now the updated Atrium space.

Gina graduated in 2019 from Dominican University in River Forest, IL, with a master’s degree in Library and Information Science with a specialization in school libraries. She now works for District 159 in Matteson, IL, as head librarian of their middle school. Gina currently resides in Orland Park, IL.

Miranda is currently working at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago in business development. She and her husband, Clay Maxfield, were married in Lake Forest this September.

Corlene, affectionately known as “Cokie,” passed away peacefully at her home in Lake Forest, IL, on June 17, 2019. She was born in Flossmoor, IL, in 1926 where she attended elementary school before she went to the Bell School in Lake Forest. In 1944, Cokie graduated from The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT, and she went on to Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, NY, where she graduated in 1948. She married Silas Cathcart in 1951, and they resided in Lake Forest with their five children, all of whom attended

Cokie was a trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago, and president of both the Women’s Board of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Lake Forest Garden Club. In addition, she was a long-standing member of the Founders’ Board of the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Cokie and Silas were the proud owners of Majo Ranch in Cody, WY, where they enjoyed time with family and friends. Cokie is survived by her five children and her 11 grandchildren.

Albert Norman Into ’41 Albert “Norm” Into ’41 passed away February 9, 2019. He was born in New York City in 1927. He attended The Bell School, Cheshire Academy, and Yale University, where he graduated with a BS in 1952. Having a strong naval background, with both his father and uncle serving as naval officers in WWI, Norm joined the Navy and received his wings and commission in 1949. He served five years on active duty as a carrier pilot and nine years in the Naval Reserve.

Norm enjoyed a long and prosperous career in avionics and marketing. He worked in senior roles for various companies including RCA, Computer Test Corporation, Anderson Laboratories, and Keithley Instruments. He remained an active pilot and held an FAA commercial pilot’s license with instrument and multiengine rating. During his Navy years, Norm flew 14 different types of aircraft.

As a civilian, he owned several types of aircraft and logged a total of 3,400 flight hours. He is survived by his four children, five grandchildren, sister-in-law, and wife of 25 years, Frances Lynn Into.

Diana W. Kruglick ’49 Diana W. Kruglick ’49, of Prescott, AZ, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2019, after a brave battle with cancer. Born in 1936, she was the eldest of six children who grew up in Lake Forest, where she attended LFCDS. Diana went on to attend The Ethel Walker School and Smith College. After raising her three daughters in Winnetka and Lake Forest, Diana followed her lifelong passion for horses, dogs, and the great outdoors by relocating to Prescott in 1991. She was a longtime member of the Woman’s Board of Rush University Medical Center.

She is survived by her three daughters, five grandchildren, and siblings, Ernest P. Waud III ’52, Cornelius B. Waud (Corinna) ’54, David B. Waud (Pamela) ’61, and Deborah Moore ’64, as well as her Belgian Sheepdogs, Quis and Fly.

Geraldine Taylor O’Connell ’53 Geraldine (Gerry) Taylor O’Connell of Lake Forest, IL, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren on August 14, 2019. She was a graduate of The Bell School, The Masters School (Dobbs) in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and the University of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland. Gerry was an avid nature lover and enjoyed spending time with her family in the great outdoors. She was a loyal and dear friend to many, and she loved her dogs, golf, horses, tennis, and quiet walks on the beach. Throughout her life, Gerry was the joyful matriarch of the McLaughlin and Taylor families.

She is survived by her two daughters, Alex McLaughlin Close (Scott) ’78 and Geraldine “Cindy” McLaughlin Kuchman ( Jeff ) ’81; her son, Peter McLaughlin ’82; and many grandchildren.

John Kaul Greene A former LFCDS Board of Trustees member and president from 1969 to1975, John Greene passed peacefully in his sleep on September 4, 2019. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean McBride Greene ’47, his children, Paul McBride Greene ’76, Valerie Greene Flynn (Mark) ’78, and John McBride Greene (Katey) ’82, and five grandchildren. John was born on October 10, 1929, in Birmingham, AL. He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, and later graduated from Yale University with a B.S. in Industrial Administration. Upon graduation, John joined the United States Marine Corps, and after a two-year station in Alaska, he married Jean on March 2, 1957. They settled in San Francisco, and he began a career at IBM. John was recruited

by William McCormick Blair to lead the company’s European business. This marked the beginning of his 42-year career with William Blair & Company.

A longtime resident of Lake Forest, John served on numerous boards including The Chicago Botanic Garden (54 years), Vulcan Materials Company (26 years), Hazelden Addiction Treatment Center (20 years), Kaul Land Company (Pennsylvania, 20 years), The Hugh Kaul Foundation (Birmingham, 20 years), and the Illinois Children’s Home & Aid Society (15 years). He will be remembered for his wide-ranging intellect, his gentle sense of humor, and his unique wisdom, which changed the lives of many for the better. In our next issue of Paw Prints, we will have a tribute to the life and legacy of John Greene.

Alumni Spotlight

Jack Richard ’10 Autonomous technology and swarm intelligence may sound like principles of science fiction that are years from actualization, but for Jack Richard, they are an integral part of his everyday life.

Following graduation from Lake Forest High School, Jack attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana, where he pursued his bachelor’s degree in computer science and spent his summers working at Aptiv on their technology for autonomous vehicle systems — often referred to as self-driving cars.

Currently enrolled in Northwestern University’s Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence program through the McCormick Engineering School, Jack juggles rigorous coursework with research in swarm intelligence — technology that enables separate systems, each with a simple job, to collectively perform their tasks and solve problems in the most efficient way possible. In addition, he has several startups, one of which, LineLeap, was funded as part of the Y Combinator batch of the summer of 2019. LineLeap creates as “fast pass” option for popular venues in cities across the country, and Y Combinator provides seed funding for innovative and promising startups.

Over the course of three months, Y Combinator’s intensive program helps support and advise each small company on development, implementation, and investors, so Jack spent every Thursday and Friday this summer at the organization’s headquarters in Mountain View, CA. During the rest of the week, Jack traveled, with his faithful dog Lionel at his side between Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit acting as a consultant for his other startups.

Paw Prints was able to catch up with Jack, via technology of course, to capture his reflections on his time at LFCDS.

Paw Prints: What is your favorite LFCDS memory?

Jack Richard: My favorite memory of LFCDS is preparing and competing in the LEGO competitions.

PP: What was your favorite class at LFCDS? JR: Definitely gym class! I will never forget Mr. (Mike) Steffens starting class by yelling out, “Sit down, clowns!”

PP: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

JR: Ever since I read my first Iron Man comic in kindergarten, I have strived to be a more humble Tony Stark. This motivated my degree in computer science as well as my MS in Artificial Intelligence.

PP: Who were your most memorable LFCDS teachers?

JR: I was fortunate to have an All-Star lineup of teachers while attending LFCDS. Mrs. (Kimberly) Kim, Mrs. (Marcia) Mann, Mr. (Mark) Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. (Bob & Sally) Bullard are just a few of the amazing teachers I was lucky to be molded by. In addition, I will always be thankful for the time I had with Dave Genger.

PP: What is the biggest innovation so far in your lifetime?

JR: While it did not begin in my lifetime, artificial intelligence will be the most influential innovation of the 21st century.

PP: What is the best advice you have received?

JR: In my family we have a special appreciation of The Lion King. Whenever a seemingly insurmountable obstacle

arises, my parents simply say “Lion King” and my marching orders are immediately defined. Being the Lion King means accepting your responsibilities and the circumstances you are in, taking a deep breath, and facing anything and everything with your head held high.

PP: If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

JR: Anywhere within a short car ride to my family and friends! Let’s see where that takes me!

PP: What is your favorite song?

JR: “Strobe” by Deadmau5.

PP: What is your favorite piece of technology?

JR: My Bose headphones!

PP: What inspires you?

JR: My inspiration largely stems from the abundant support I have received from family and friends throughout the years. I cherish the opportunities I was provided growing up and want to ensure those who invested in me are paid back tenfold. I am fortunate enough to have found a career path that I truly enjoy.

PP: What advice would you give our current LFCDS students?

JR: The best advice I can give LFCDS students is to find what you’re passionate about and pursue it relentlessly! You are at a school that facilitates incomparable opportunity and growth.

PP: Cubs or Sox? JR: Cubs!

A Message from

Head of School Dear Friends of LFCDS, The word “philanthropy” comes from ancient Greek and translates roughly to “love of humankind.” It’s a wonderful word and a wonderful concept, and the love you all show for our school through your philanthropy makes a difference beyond measure in the lives of our children and our teachers.

In my first year as Head of School, I have felt awestruck by the commitment of our community to the mission and work of our school. At every turn, members of our community give their time and their talents to create the most inspiring educational experience possible for our students. Our school is a magical place of joy and challenge, committed to building our students’ foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth.

The support given to our Annual Giving Fund is the lifeblood of our school, helping to close the gap between tuition and the true cost of offering the exceptional education we believe all our students deserve. Last year, thanks to the community’s philanthropic support, we were able to raise $574,083 with gifts from parents, alumni, faculty, and staff, grandparents, alumni parents, and friends. Without this financial support, we could not be the school that we are.

Last March, I also experienced my first LFCDS Auction as Head of School. The Bright Lights, Big City Auction, chaired by the dynamic and talented Pim Alley and Kate Holland, was a huge success. The Paddle Raise was a highlight of the evening, not only because of the incredible demonstration of support you all showed for LFCDS, but also because of the energetic cheering — and notable dancing talent — of my colleagues standing behind me. If ever there was a time for me to see and feel our community’s love for our school, it was during that

portion of the evening. Through your generosity, we raised $919,725. Money from the Auction and Paddle Raise makes possible new initiatives, such as new classroom furniture in select classrooms, an additional social worker to enhance our social and emotional learning program, premier professional development opportunities for our faculty, and the annual Special Speakers Series, which this year will bring technology author Catherine Steiner-Adair and psychologist and author Lisa Damour to campus.

I’d like to thank our parents and alumni, my talented and inspiring colleagues, and the Board of Trustees for the remarkable support shown to our school during the 2018–2019 school year. I’d like to especially thank Dr. Ahmed Farag, who in his third and final year as Board President (and tenth year as a trustee!), was a source of tireless support. His belief in our school and its mission inspires me, and I am deeply grateful for his leadership.

President of the Board Dear LFCDS Family and Friends, It’s with gratitude that I extend my deepest appreciation for your tremendous support during the 2018 – 2019 academic year. We kicked off the last academic year with a new Head of School, Joy Hurd, who quickly transitioned into the community and was dedicated to continuing on our school’s successful upward trajectory. We are excited about his leadership and the many talents he brings to LFCDS. LFCDS is an incredible institution that continues to deliver an outstanding education, and the generous support from the LFCDS community is unique and second to none. Your vital support and affirmation directly impacted the LFCDS mission, and we are profoundly grateful for your philanthropic partnership, whether it was through your volunteering, time commitment, or monetary support. This report is a highlight of all the volunteer and financial support given to LFCDS during the past fiscal year.

I would like to extend my appreciation to Development Co-Chairs Jamee Kane ’90 and Marianne Silver, members of the Board of Trustees, the dedicated team of class agents, and our alumni volunteers whose letters, calls, emails, and outreach to community members established a substantial level of unrestricted support for this year’s annual fund.

As the school’s top fundraising priority, the Annual Giving Fund deeply impacts our dynamic educational programs and directly supports every student and faculty member.
