LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

As we near the end of the first semester, Lake Forest Academy is on track to record another good year.

In August we opened the new Student Union, a 34,000 sq. ft. building that provides not only a new dining hall and great study spaces but also a lower level with a global leadership centre, school store, mail room, and an active student commons with pool and ping-pong. The students have been drawn to this new space throughout the day and evening, and it has become a true hub of the campus for our entire community.

At a time when uncertainty permeates the country and the world, I am proud that LFA is both clear in its mission and dedicated to the education of true global citizens.

In September, we hosted a dynamic reunion with record numbers of alumnae and alumni returning to the Academy. The campus was welcoming and it was a pleasure to speak with graduates of all ages from Ferry Hall and Lake Forest Academy and share the latest from the Academy. Most importantly, the alumnae and alumni got the chance to meet with current students and observe through their lens the LFA of today. Also in September, we began our study of the Head of School Symposium topic for the year, The Caribbean: Climate, Commerce, and Culture. I selected the Caribbean for this year’ symposium as I felt it was a part of the Americas that was not well known or understood. I wanted LFA students, in a time when isolationism and nationalism appear to be gaining strength, to learn about an area’s struggle with colonisation, imperialism, and independence in such countries as Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.

In October, we hosted a very well-attended Parents Weekend with a sense of community and spirit that not only made me feel proud of our school and our students, faculty, and staff, but also allowed me to reflect on how far LFA has progressed in the past 16 years. Obviously, the campus has been improved with new and renovated buildings, but more importantly, the sense of belonging and the strength of the LFA community are unmistakable. Like any educational institution, it is the human capital that really makes the difference between being merely good and being truly great, and I am pleased to report that it is the LFA students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni that make the school the premier educational institution it has become.

Clearly, it has been a good year for the school so far, but I also want to state that LFA continues to strive for ongoing improvement. We have a clear and focused strategic plan and a board of trustees and administration that are determined to see us achieve all of our goals and initiatives. At a time when uncertainty permeates the country and the world, I am proud that LFA is both clear in its mission and dedicated to the education of true global citizens. I thank everyone for their support of the school, and I look forward to watching the Academy progress through this year and beyond.

On Board At the November 3 and 4 Trustee Weekend, 10 new LFA Trustees joined the LFA Board. Here’s an opportunity to get to know them better.

Todd Altounian ’86 has been involved with LFA almost non-stop for the past 15+ years, during which his construction company has provided the manpower that has brought to life the designs for new buildings and renovations that have brought the campus into the 21st century. A graduate of Curry College, Todd is a local alumnus whose sister (Nicole ’90) and brother (Jamie ’93) are also LFA grads. Todd brings to LFA both his professional expertise in construction and project management and his board experience at Lake Forest Hospital and an area club.

His knowledge of local government and regulations has already made him a valued advisor for property matters. Todd lives in Lake Forest.

Bruce Anderson ’70 previously served on the Board for 13 years (1988-1997 and 1998-2002); he was elected a Life Trustee in 2013. He is the co-founder and managing partner of SGC Investment Management in Naperville. A member of a multigeneration family of LFA and Ferry Hall grads, Bruce is a past president of the Alumni Council, served on the Development and Head Search committees of the Board, has hosted alumni events, and has been a guest speaker in our Economics classes. Bruce’s professional expertise is in investment management, marketing, and financial planning, and he writes and publishes a monthly market and economic commentary. Bruce lives in Naperville.

Molly Pearson Campbell ’04 has been a director of her family’s foundation in New York City since 2010. The Wohlers Family Foundation supports education, healthcare, the environment, and animal welfare. Molly graduated from Elon University and New York University, and she is a registered nurse in the state of New York. She is an active LFA alumna; she is a class agent for 2004, helped organize her 10th reunion, is involved with NYC-area LFA alumni, and hosted an alumni event in her home earlier this year. She advocates for STEM education and will bring a contemporary perspective to the Board. Molly lives in New York City.

Ann Danner Dwyer co-founded and recently retired as CEO/ President of Residential Homes of American Inc in Illinois, prior to which she was Director of Sales and Acquisitions at American United Inc. A graduate of the University of Bridgeport, she also studied in the Executive Scholar Program at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management. In addition, Ann is involved with ALSAC/ St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Board and the James A. Graaskamp Center for Real Estate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her extensive committee service encompasses the areas of fundraising, building, finance, marketing, compensation, and strategic planning.

She is also an active member of the LFA’s Parents Association.

Ann lives in Lake Forest.

Thomas B. Kelley ’65 previously served on the LFA Board from 1983-1992 and was elected a Life Trustee in 2014. He was also elected to the LFA Hall of Fame in 2015. A graduate of Amherst College and the University of Denver Robert Sturm College of Law, Tom is a partner in the law firm of Levine Sullivan Koch & Shulz LLP in Denver, who specializes in defending “the rights and privileges of journalists and news organizations,” including libel, invasions of privacy, an access, on a national scope. A highly regarded attorney, Tom is also an active alumnus, who frequently hosts alumni events in Denver Colo., where he lives.

William Markey III is the founder and president of Relevant C Business Group with significant experience in corporate development, business strategy, and mergers and acquisitions in technology and media. He holds degrees from Georgetown University, Columbia University, and Johns Hopkins University and has devoted his professional life to communications and electronic media. William is a member of the advisory board of Gainspeed and Verimatrix and a former trustee of Quest Academy in Palatine. He is a current LFA parent and lives in Long Grove.

Dr. Patrick McCarthy ’73 is one of five brothers who graduated from the Academy, including Ed ’68, Bill ’68, James ’69 (trustee 1993-2002), and Michael ’71 (trustee 1994-2003 and Board Chair). Since graduating from Notre Dame University and Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and completing his residency at the Mayo Clinic, Pat has dedicated his professional life to cardiac surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and Northwestern University Hospital, for which service he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2008. His attributes include leadership, decision-making, and an impressive array of academic and clinical achievements. He has a clear understanding of the work of the Board from his experience as a board member at Northwestern Hospital. He supports LFA’s mission and is committed to the continued success of the school. Patrick lives in Winnetka.

Bethann Moritz is both a current and alumni parent who has been very active in the Parents Association as 2014 Gala Committee member, 2014-15 Academy Fund Co-Chair, 201516 Academy Fund volunteer, 2015-16 Gala Co-Chair, and 2016 season Hockey Parent Liaison. She has experience with public schools, where she served one four-year term on the Winnetka Public School Board District 36, was President of the Greeley School PTO, and co-chaired the Winnetka Public Schools District 36 “Sustain Excellence” tax referendum campaign. Beth and her family open their house to LFA boarders every weekend, and she is ready to support the mission and work of the school at the trustee level, bringing experience in parent relations and fund-raising.

Beth lives in Winnetka.

Keith Owen III ’64, a graduate of Indiana State University, spent his entire professional career in the Public Relations, Communications, and Government Relations offices of the major oil companies, principally British Petroleum in Houston. He retired early and has since been able to “do [his] own thing,” which has included collecting antique cars and serving on non-profit healthcare boards. Several members of his family are LFA and Ferry Hall grads; he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2014. Keith is a long-time supporter of and friend to LFA, frequently hosting alumni receptions. With a background in development work, Keith is interested in strengthening LFA alumni connections.

He lives in Houston, Tex. Keith is an alumni parent; his son, Keith Owen IV, is a member of the LFA class of 1995.

Mark Stevens is the parent of a four-year boarding LFA alumnus. During his son’s time at the Academy, Mark actively supported LFA athletics, particularly the hockey program.

As a parent, he participated in discussions about athletics and academics, quickly recognizing and appreciating the school’s dedication to producing scholar-athletes. As the former CEO of a plastics and packaging company, his areas of expertise are business, management, and strategic thinking, and he is also well-versed in financial matters.

Student Union Opens THE FIRST SHOVEL WENT INTO THE DIRT IN JUNE 2015; THE FIRST FORK WENT INTO THE FIRST MEAL SERVED IN AUGUST 2016.

BY SUSAN HOAGLAND It is hard to say on which date the Student Union actually opened because, like any good restaurant, there was a “soft opening.” Without much fanfare, the Student Union opened its doors on Monday, August 8 for breakfast at 7:00 a.m. The first customers were Science Faculty member Dr. Ruth Smith; her two children, Gillian ’15, and Pliny ’18, along with Dean of Students Chris Tennyson, his wife, Math teacher Maggie, and their three children. The goal was to have the Student Union up and running for the start of the school year.

Mission accomplished.

Sodexo Food Services Manager Debbie Lindstrom said of the opening, “It was AWESOME! It truly was a labor of love, we moved everything from the old kitchen in Hutch (which we called home for 30+ years) to the new beautifully ‘loaded with all the finest equipment kitchen’ in two days! Having air conditioning and our own WALK IN FREEZER was the icing on the cake. For thirty years we carted frozen food deliveries from the old Hutch out the doors (by hand cart), up the steps, down the catwalk into Reid Hall and into the catering freezer without one accident! It is so much easier now.”

More than 300 meals were served and there were smiles on every face in the room. It was a perfect beginning for the new Student Union at Lake Forest Academy.

Meals continued on schedule for the first week of preseason football. Then on Sunday, August 14, the Reid-Anderson Family Dining Room was filled to capacity with the pre-season, indoor picnic. It was electric. The excitement of seeing old friends, meeting new ones all in a beautiful new building was fantastic. More than 300 meals were served and there were smiles on every face in the room. It was a perfect beginning for the new Student Union at Lake Forest Academy.

The celebration continued on Sunday, August 21 for the Opening of School BBQ. A glorious summer evening allowed for outdoor seating on the Atlass Terrace overlooking the new building to welcome the LFA community back to a new school year.

The 34,000 square-foot building had come to life. And it was a beautiful sight to see.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

Lynn Lazzeretti Receives 2016 Mints Grant

Math and Psychology teacher Lynn Lazzeretti is the 2016 recipient of the Mints Professional Development Grant.

In 2004 The Mints Professional Development Fund, an endowed fund, was made possible by a generous gift from the estate of Tom Mints ’45. A Mints Grant provides support for individual enrichment projects for faculty and staff. Since its inception, grants have been used to travel the world—from Africa to Borneo and China to England—enriching LFA’s curriculum along the way. Each grant has provided recipients the funding to step outside of their classrooms and engage in enrichment opportunities well beyond traditional workshops and conferences.

Lynn Lazzeretti is a member of both the Science and Mathematics Departments. Lynn taught math and social science courses at a public school in Schiller Park, Ill. before joining the LFA faculty in 2013.

She earned a B.S. in Mathematics with a focus on Secondary Education and a minor in Psychology from Illinois State University. Lynn is the assistant varsity girls field hockey coach and she enjoys living on campus in Field dorm, where she is also the dorm head.

During the summer of 2016 Lynn used Mints Grant funds to travel to Europe to attend the 8th annual European Conference on Positive Psychology (ECPP) in Angers, France. There, her accommodations were a home stay with a French family. At the conference she was able to meet colleagues from all around the world, immerse herself in a new culture, share knowledge, and discover some of the latest research findings in the field of Positive Psychology.

Positive Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. At Lake Forest Academy, Lynn wanted Positive Psychology, which focuses on educating students about how they can lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves and enhance their experiences, to guide her classroom. At the conference she was able to attend various keynote lectures and speak with colleagues at the poster sessions. Not only was she able to learn about the current research on Positive Psychology, she was also given the opportunity to learn about many different personal experiences people had implementing these strategies into their daily lives, in their homes, at work, or in the classroom.

Lynn has worked at Lake Forest Academy for three years, but the last academic year was her first year teaching AP Psychology. She came to LFA to teach Geometry in the mathematics department, but she is passionate about educating the students in her classroom about different aspects of psychological topics. She took some time out of the AP curriculum, and admittedly her own comfort zone, to touch upon Positive Psychology last year. At the end of the year when she polled her students about which unit they enjoyed most, she was happily surprised to find that many students enjoyed learning about Positive Psychology.

Since Positive Psychology is relatively new, Lynn was able to use The Mints Grant to fund the opportunity to attend an international conference where she explored the topic and found an intersection between Positive Psychology and her classroom. Specifically, she wanted to discover how the practices of Positive Psychology could benefit the students in her classroom, give them the appropriate tools needed to find success, and allow them to flourish. The European Conference on Positive Psychology gave her the opportunity to be in an atmosphere full of people with similar aspirations that allowed for great opportunities to collaborate and enrich her appreciation and understanding of Positive Psychology.

Lynn made a presentation of her Mints Grant experience to the faculty at a recent faculty meeting. Mints Grants are awarded annually.

Stuart Center for Global Leadership Opens in New Student Union “ THIS IS GREAT, BUT THERE IS STILL WORK TO BE DONE.” —Jim Stuart ’59

BY SUSAN HOAGLAND On Wednesday, August 17, 2016 Life Trustee Jim Stuart ’59 was honored and celebrated at a luncheon to officially open the Stuart Center for Global Leadership (SCGL) in the new Student Union. It was a warm thank you to Jim from people who have worked with him over the years.

Jim’s transformational gift, motivated by the 2014 Strategic Plan which articulates that LFA’s Educational Initiative strives to create inspired global citizens, prompted the opening of the SCGL. The SCGL, led by Executive Director Matt Nink, will create programs that provide curricular and extra-curricular experiences for both faculty and students alike.

The SCGL is the epicenter of all the action on the lower level of the Student Union. Situated at the intersection of two ping pong tables, it is fair to say that Matt Nink sits in the hub of campus. This location gives the SCGL staff an opportunity to engage in dialogue with students all day long.

Parents Weekend had it ALL

Parents Weekend on Oct. 14 and 15 offered parents an opportunity to experience a day in the life of their students by attending mini-classes prepared by LFA faculty, which left parents inspired by the commitment of the faculty, and impressed by the standards to which their children are held.

Parents also enjoyed informational sessions outside of the classroom. Director of Alumni Relations and Giving Ruth Keyso moderated a panel discussion of young LFA alumni who shared advice with parents about how their children might make the most of what LFA has to offer. Dean of Pluralism and Multicultural Affairs Lusanda Mayikana led a Multicultural Dialogue and presented the results of last year’s Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism (AIM) survey, illustrating the diversity climate at LFA. The term ‘Global Citizenship’ was explained by Assistant Dean of Curriculum Kristine Von Ogden and Matt Nink, Executive Director of the Stuart Center for Global Leadership, who described the school’s curricular and co-curricular themes for providing our students with the knowledge, exposure, and confidence to thrive in a changing world.

On the evening of Friday, November 4, 2016 the Student Union was a brightly lit oasis in the center of campus welcoming Cornerstone Society members to the annual Cornerstone Society Celebration. Over 125 people joined the festivities as we gathered to thank Lake Forest Academy’s leadership donors, as well as dedicate the Student Union and honor the donors who made the building possible.

The Student Union proved to be the perfect location for the event.

Guests gathered for cocktails in the Kaplan Commons and enjoyed the last colors of the fall sunset through the wall of windows, with sweeping views across the field hockey field toward the north end of campus. It provided the perfect setting for reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and marveling at the spectacular new addition to LFA’s facilities; a 34,000 square foot building, which has become the hub of campus.

Guests were invited to the South Commons for the evening’s program. Head of School John Strudwick thanked donors for their leadership gifts to the Academy Fund, the A Night to Unite Gala, as well as donors to the Student Union. (See sidebar, p. 18). There was an impact video filmed by students as well as comments made by Chris Dozois ’84, P’17 and the appointment of the Harold H. Corbin Chair in Environmental Studies.

Chris spoke about the impact of the Student Union from his unique perspective of an LFA student, then a faculty member, and as a parent. Whether as a junior in 1982, or as an adult member of the community today, he described how a space like this makes a world of difference for the quality of the student experience.

Another highlight was the announcement of the appointment of the Harold H. Corbin Chair in Environmental Students. This endowed chair was established by alumni to honor the legacy of Harold H. Corbin, Jr., LFA’s Headmaster from 1951-1969. The Corbin Chair supports a faculty member in the field of environmental studies for a three-year term. Dr. Ruth Smith P’15, ’17, a member of the science department, was named the recipient of the 2016 Corbin Chair.

John Strudwick concluded the program, noting that the LFA of today is only possible with the generosity of the Lake Forest Academy community of donors. As a school, LFA stands on the shoulders of those who came before us; guided by a strong faculty, excellent students and a strategic plan that maps out the future of educating inspired global citizens.

Dinner was served in the Reid-Anderson Family Dining Room. While the refectory-style dining created a more glamorous experience than the typical meal service, hosting the entire event in the Student Union was an ideal way to offer a glimpse into a day-in-the-life of students at LFA. It is with deep gratitude that we thank our leadership donors—to the Academy Fund, the Gala and the Student Union—thanks to you, there has never been a better time to be at LFA. #CaxysAtWrigley Thanks to the Chicago Cubs, we had some fun and exciting baseball to follow in November. And, thanks to a generous donor, two faculty members, Adam Gerber and Chris Dozois ’84, had the opportunity to be at Wrigley for Game 4 of the 2016 World Series. The tickets were donated that morning, a random faculty/staff drawing was held for the donated tickets, and the rest, as they say, is history. Korean Alumni Association Kicks Off in Seoul

BY RUTH KEYSO LFA alumni in Korea established the Korean Alumni Association (KAA) during the summer of 2016 as a way to stay connected to one another and to the Academy.

The group gathered at the InterContinental Seoul Coex Hotel on June 12, 2016, prior to LFA’s annual summer celebration with current parents and students.

A subgroup of 17 young alumni from the classes of 2009-2015 then met again in Seoul the following month to discuss ways to organize the group, reach out to members, and to maintain the valuable connections they made during their high school years at LFA. Hong Gi Luke Baek ’13 who, along with Seong-Gun Chris Yun ’97, Yoong Hyun Shawn Shin ’12, and Won-Joon Patrick Han ’11, was instrumental in getting the group off the ground, says of the initial gathering: “The meeting was meaningful, not just for sharing good old memories but also for networking and bonding among Korean alumni.”

The group plans to meet bi-annually in Korea, during the winter and summer university break periods, so that those alumni studying at colleges in the States can attend.

What Ferry Hall Means to Today’s LFA Students Ferry Hall alumnae have always been agents of change; that ethos is still very much present today, as LFA prepares young women for the next stages and opportunities in their lives.

Four years ago, I never imagined that I would be here at Lake Forest Academy. Living near the south end of Chicago, I had always thought I would attend my huge, local public high school with the people I had known since kindergarten. Fast forward to now, and I can honestly say that this institution has truly changed me. I had never pictured myself as one of the captains of the varsity field hockey team, or living with 50 other girls in a dorm, who all have beautiful and unique stories, and yet still share similar struggles. I had never pictured myself as a Ferry Hall prefect.

When last year’s Ferry Hall prefect, Maggie Meyer, chose me to take on the position, I was beyond ecstatic, albeit a little bit nervous, and of course, I immediately began thinking of ways that I wanted to have an impact on the girls in this school. I’ve come to find that the experiences at LFA are what you make of them. There are countless opportunities for all students to take charge in the classroom, field, or studio. But I think that it is often forgotten that many of those opportunities would not be available for a lot of girls here, if not for the existence of and presence that was, and is, Ferry Hall.

I was beyond ecstatic, albeit a little bit nervous, and of course, I immediately began thinking of ways that I wanted to have an impact on the girls in this school.

Ferry Hall is physical proof that girls are that portal to the successes and advancements of the future. For years, this institution has been giving girls the foundation to take charge, and make change, and be the best versions of themselves. I am immensely grateful for all the beautiful and wonderful opportunities and experiences that Ferry Hall has granted me, and I hope to continue to use this gracious position to continue to honor the Ferry Hall name.

Sonia Flew Aligning the Fall Play with the 2016-17 Head of School Symposium topic allows students an opportunity to tackle some meaty issues.

BY MONICA PALMER In honor of Dr. Strudwick’s Head of School Symposium, The Caribbean: Climate, Commerce, and Culture, the Fine and Performing Arts Department will present theater productions this year from the Caribbean.

Our fall production was Sonia Flew by Melinda Lopez. This is a story about two families who struggle with love and sacrifice for the privilege and honor of serving their country.

When the Symposium theme highlighting the Caribbean was announced, I wanted to focus on material from these beautiful islands to showcase the rich culture and traditions of the region. There are more than 25 island nations off the coast of the Caribbean; after reading several plays with an island theme, I selected Sonia Flew, spotlighting the island of Cuba, where many of our students had already traveled to last spring. The actors watched and discussed clips from the Cuban Revolution, a defining moment in the play.

We incorporated vignettes shot by Victoria (Tori) Glass ’18, who worked with the cast to create “flashbacks” through a series of video montages of their characters’ past. Melinda Lopez’ script provided our students a play that demonstrated how one can always find the

humor in even the most intense family situations. Through character analysis and scene work, the student cast and crew contributed to a powerful and historical production that complimented the Head of School Symposium’s theme nicely, by exploring how life can change in an instant and how world events impact the lives we touch every day.

It tells the story about the love between a young peasant girl and the wealthy aristocrat who she loves to her dying breath. Putting it all into Words LIKE A RACE CAR DRIVER HAS A ‘NEED FOR SPEED,’ A WRITER HAS A NEED TO WRITE.

BY CATHY MORRISON In his first visit to the LFA campus since his 5th reunion in 1990, Bruce Terris ’85 found “a memory around every corner.”

This trip down memory lane was actually a labor of love for Terris, who works as a writer for the Amazon Prime Video series Patriot, which filmed parts of Episodes Two and Three in Reid Hall on June 16, 2016. He was writing Episodes Four and Ten; during a break, he sat down to talk about his journey from a performer on the Caxy stage to Hollywood writer.

In the days of pegged pants, permed hair, hi-top Reeboks, and Members Only jackets, Bruce was a boarding student who lived briefly in MacIntosh Cottage (it housed boys then), in Bates dorm (the building that came down to make way for Atlass Hall), and finally, in Warner House.

Bruce worked as an actor for a year before he realized that side of the business wasn’t his passion. He remembers both Mark Dryfoos, his LFA theater teacher, and Judy Datesman, his advisor, telling him that he had talent, but that he would have to work at the craft. He jokes he thought that meant he’d have to work at it until he was, say, 23, and then he’d “have it made.”

He’s been working as a writer for 20 years, but got started as a production assistant; his first film was the Coen brothers’ The Hudsucker Proxy, starring Tim Robbins. He thought he “was going to be working side-by-side with the Coen brothers, but the job amounted to more or less picking up trash.” He continued working as a production assistant, eventually becoming an assistant director. He describes the director’s work as “the creative role; the first assistant is a managerial role.” He would manage scheduling the shoots, budgeting the time needed to film each scene.

At age 30, he says he got serious about writing; he “wrote a LOT,” and started selling screen plays at 40, but they didn’t get made. He adds, “You could have an entire career in Hollywood, making a living as a writer, and never have anything actually get made.”

He currently has a number of things in development; along with Patriot, he wrote for an ABC mini-series called The Assets, another show in the spy genre. He said knowing the genre really helps with Patriot.

He described this show as the opposite of a Mission Impossible-type of show, where protagonist Ethan Hunt (the Tom Cruise character) might take out three bad guys in one frenetic action sequence. Rather, this show explores the work and intrigue that leads up to an action that is never shown. “It kind of flips it on its head,” explains Terris.

His advice for current students who want to pursue this type of career? “It depends on what you want to do. If you want to be a writer, start writing now. It takes a LONG time, and skill and talent, but the key is PERSISTENCE—keep writing. You either have a NEED to write, or you don’t.”

Boys Soccer Team Preseason Trip to Jamaica In a prelude to a very successful season, the varsity boys combined service learning and soccer for an unforgettable experience in another culture.

BY CATHY MORRISON WHERE: Kingston, Jamaica WHEN: August 8-13, 2016 HOW DID THE TRIP COME TOGETHER: Head Coach Paul Makovec found the company that runs the program, Global Soccer Ministries, and thought it would be a great opportunity for the boys to play teams from another country as part of their preseason bonding and training.

TRIP ITINERARY: According to Assistant Coach Jessica Gimbel, “We played four games of soccer (one each day) against different high school and club teams in Kingston. We traveled to a local orphanage and learned about some of the schools in Kingston. We met kids there ranging from ages 9-17. We played soccer and basketball, talked, and heard some of them play music. We went to a local market, the beach, the Bob Marley museum, and a popular restaurant to watch the Olympics. We drove through different parts of Kingston and got a feel for how the city functions as a whole.”

MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE TRIP: Coach Gimbel said, “The team spent a lot of time playing soccer with each other and also with locals at the beach and with children at the orphanage.

They were able to communicate via soccer and it was a very positive experience. Many of our students had been to the Caribbean islands as tourists. Going to Kingston allowed them to engage with the culture of Jamaica and see what issues the country faces on a much deeper level.”

FAVORITE TRIP MEMORY: For junior Jack Mahon, “It was really cool to play against Jamaican soccer teams. They played different styles of soccer that you don’t see in Illinois. It was also cool to play on fields that were right near mountains.”

WHAT WAS THE IMPACT OF THE SERVICE LEARNING COMPONENT OF THE TRIP? Senior Joey Thomas noted, “Seeing the other kids made me realize how privileged I really am. Phones and sweets are everyday things we take for granted that not everyone has the opportunity to enjoy.” Jack concurred, saying, “I really enjoyed going to the orphanage, because it is something I have never done before.

It really opened my eyes to the blessings we take for granted.”

STAYING CONNECTED: The team coordinated a collection of gently-used soccer cleats in all sizes to send to the orphanage. In the course of a few weeks this fall, they collected 38 pairs of cleats to send to their new friends in Jamaica.

Program Shift to Eight-Player Football LFA was one of the first high schools in Illinois to field a football team; 124 years later, football remains a fall athletic program offering but will be shifting to an eight-player format for next season.

Traditional 11-player football requires at least 40 students to sustain both Varsity and JV squads; with our numbers averaging 33-34 players over the last four years, we dropped our JV team, and a committee was formed to investigate the optimal conditions for maintaining a strong Caxy football program. The committee, which included Athletic Director Darrin Madeley, Dean of Admission Carolyn Gorowski, Head Football Coach Robin Bowkett, and Dean of College Counseling Andrew Poska, gave the question careful consideration and did extensive research regionally and nationally. This outreach included boarding schools across the country as well as thoughtful review of the local youth football programs.

The committee report was shared with the Deans Council and Head of School John Strudwick in October; together the school leadership team agreed with their conclusion to move to an eight-player football program, a decision endorsed unanimously by the Board of Trustees at the fall trustee meeting in early November.

LFA will continue to sustain and honor its gridiron tradition by offering eight-player football. This matches the needs and size of our student body, and allows players the opportunity to participate in a level of football that is exciting to play and watch, because it is highly competitive, fast-paced, and high-scoring.

We have requested to join the Great 8 League, which includes North Shore Country Day School, and other private and small public schools in Wisconsin; many of these schools, like LFA, were once members of the Independent School League (ISL) and/or the Indian Trails Conference in years past. Many Caxy football alumni will recognize these schools and venues from their playing days.

The same rules, techniques, and overall game structure apply to both 11-player and eight-player football; the primary difference is having three fewer players on each side. Caxy players should be able to adapt quickly to the format, as they already have experience playing multiple positions on both offense and defense.

Talented athletes who aspire to play college-level football will continue to have the opportunity to be seen and evaluated by college coaches; in fact, there are a number of athletes currently playing in collegiate 11-player programs who come from eight-player high school programs.

LFA is grateful for the opportunity and privilege to have participated in the Chicago Catholic League for the past six years. We look forward to Caxy Football in 2017, and anticipate fielding a single Varsity team; once the scheduling process is finalized, it will be posted on the Caxy football team page on our website.

The alumni were first to score, but the students eventually edged them out, winning 4-3. As they say, there is always next year. The Academy hopes to make this an annual event.

Homecoming and Reunion 2016 Homecoming and Reunion Weekend 2016 was one of the most well-attended in LFA history.

More than 360 alumni, faculty, and friends of LFA and Ferry Hall returned to campus to celebrate the school and one another. Alumni enjoyed a wide variety of activities, from a science class, to a dialogue with current students, to a chance to show off their athletic skills by pulling a chariot at half-time (Go, Class of 1996!). class notes Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Miss Your 50th Reunion A blog post by Bill Courter ’66, reprinted with permission Have you reached the age where you are close to your 50th high school or college reunion? If the answer is ‘yes,’ then I have a strong suggestion. Do NOT miss it! I just attended my 50th high school reunion at Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Ill., and it was an absolute delight. It was an extremely positive and rewarding experience. Better yet, it was educational on so many different levels, some very unexpected.

As a starting point, it reminded me how my classmates had been such a solid group of kids and it highlighted how they have become such outstanding adults. I learned about their lives, their triumphs, and setbacks. More importantly, I learned how many of them followed their passions and how they learned to give back to their community. So many of them, even in their 60s, were currently making such a difference in their respective worlds.

Let me give a couple of examples of giving back to your community. One classmate was volunteering every Thursday night in a soup kitchen for the poor. Another classmate was volunteering weekly at the local hospital. Another classmate was offering time at a museum, working—for free—on some botany project. And one classmate had formed a search and rescue team for lost snow skiers, often heading out into dangerous terrain in the middle of the night. To this point, he had led 400 searches, saving 350 lives. Now that is giving back to your community.

I was equally impressed how so many of my classmates had followed their passions, both in their work and in their extracurricular activities.

A surprising number of my classmates, still in their 60s, were competing in state-run, long-distance bike rides, covering hundreds of miles over 5-6 days, pedaling up some of the tallest mountains in the United States. One athletic classmate was even competing in state tennis championships, still winning double competitions.

For me, the classmates were a reminder of the importance of following your dreams, chasing your passions, and remaining in good physical health—so you would have sufficient energy for those challenges. The best part was their explanation of their individual pursuits. They were not presented with any sense of bragging. Instead, they were presented as examples of what they had learned over the course of their lives.

They talked about what had become increasingly valuable to their happiness as they aged.

With the reunion, there were many surprises. All of the faces had aged, but I could hear echoes of their laughter when they were younger. I could see glimpses of their expressions when they were back in school. So much had changed, but so much had remained unchanged. It was fascinating and a delight to see the familiar components of a long lost friend. How often do we have a chance to see people who we may not have seen in 50 years? How often are we reminded how relationships and friendships can extend through decades—even without communication. The feelings still persist.

The reunion was also an avenue for re-experiencing your high school and its teachers.

When you gather in small groups and discuss the old days, it is a treat when someone’s memory sparks another person’s memory, and all of a sudden the table of classmates are talking about long forgotten incidents with a sudden, unexpected clarity. So many great memories. So many fond moments lost in the recess of your mind. But somehow they still seem to be tucked inside, still shaping our perspectives and values.

As for my high school, I developed a renewed appreciation for the quality of the school and the high quality of the education. Yes, we laughed at some of the memories of our old teachers. But we also remembered how they molded us into better students—better learners. I remember the head of our school proclaiming that he did not care what we learned; he just wanted us to learn how to learn.

Looking around at my classmates, I realized that our high school had succeeded at its own goal—well beyond my recollections.

So, for all of you who have not crossed this life event, I want to recommend that you reexamine any resistance toward attending the school’s reunion and readjust your thinking to consider the hidden benefits.

Not only do you rekindle lost friendships; you reignite some of the enthusiasm from those earlier years. Life is still good. Life can still be meaningful and giving. Together, we can still make a difference. And, really, the world still needs us as much as ever.

So, do yourselves a favor …

Attend your next high school or college reunion …

Let yourself be transformed and reenergized …

Don’t miss these rare and wonderful opportunities …

There is still much to learn from your classmates …

And much to learn from your school …

Now book that trip and attend that reunion …

You will not regret it …

1952 Walter “Corky” Hellyer reported that he and his wife, Jay, had breakfast in September in Door County, Wis., with Anna and Pete Stebbins. In addition, Pete sees Carl Weston several times a week.

Betsy Wheeler Hill writes, “I still am living in Knoxville, Tenn., and love it. I had always planned on going back to Wisconsin from Florida, and found home here. I do go back every summer, for a visit and usually see Anne Bushler Baker and hope to see Jay and Corky Hellyer. I keep busy playing bridge, gardening, and doing volunteer work for the homeless. I am blessed with great health and do enjoy life.”

1954 John Winsor published a new thriller, called The Punishments. The plot is described as a “heart-pounding struggle of one family after fearful voters elect a demagogue President and a fundamentalist Congress.” He and Don Trieschmann celebrated their 80th birthdays together in Boulder, Colo. John said, “We got on the phone and called classmates and had a lot of fun talking with those who could still pick up the phone.”

1949 George A. “Mickey” Poole recently returned from Positano, where, he said, “I continued my convalescence from a broken hip. The scenery was fantastic.” He also recently had dinner with Bob Scott ’50.

Nancy Wells Ypma tells us, “The past year has been one of recovery from even more spinal surgery and the summer of 2015 spent in Cedars-Sinai Hospital in LA. But this last summer was much better.

I took a driving trip from St. Louis up the East Coast to see Tina Clemens Demchak in Pittsburgh and grandchildren, great grandchildren, and children from Buffalo, NY., to La Plata, MD. It was great. My daughter, Nancy, drove. I am still in Costa Mesa, Calif. I have retired from doing taxes and now I quilt, practice the flute, and do a lot of physical therapy. I have talked to Harriet Arpee Sherman via phone and she is busy reading while Tina is still playing tennis. I would love to hear from everybody via email, Facebook, phone, or letters.”

1955 1951 Judy Richer Litman sent this photo, saying, “That’s me and my ‘paper doll’ collection, sending Reunion greetings to my old friends from Ferry Hall. After turning 83, I decided that I get to act a little crazy again. I’m enjoying life and good health, playing golf, (because golf is still my #1 passion), and wishing the old timers a good reunion. Worked for Quaker Oats for seven years, married Bill Pross, had two sons and lived in Oak Park, Geneva, Pittsburgh, Hinsdale, Boston, and Chicago, where we have been for almost 12 years. Both sons live in Chicago, as do my two grandchildren (one girl, Joey, 15, and one transgender grandson, Parker, 17). Life is one adventure after another—my husband was in a bike accident in 1990 and has been disabled ever since. Charles L. Erickson took a road trip that spanned three-and-a-half weeks and covered more than 9,000 miles from home on the coast of North Carolina to Knoxville, St. Louis, Denver, Glenwood Springs, Col., Seattle (where we stayed for days visiting my younger daughter Charli), Victoria BC, Vancouver, Calgary, Glacier National Park, and back. He said, “On the way we saw longhorn sheep, buffalo, Harbor seals, sea lions, and Orca whales, along with the Great Plains, Rockies, great rivers, spectacular waterfalls and snowcapped peaks; we were surrounded by a sheep herd and witnessed a horse drive. We renewed acquaintances with family and old friends while making a number of new ones, and were greeted like long-lost family by current and retired members of the Calgary Highlanders, and altogether had a wonderful time. Flying is quicker, but you don’t see the country and meet the people. My personal award for the most polite, skillful drivers and cleanest road-sides goes to those in western Canada.

They use turn signals, don’t tail-gate, let you into traffic and don’t litter.”

Susan Williams Lord de Alonso continues to live in Santiago, Chile, while publishing her blog, Medieval Spanish Chef, three times a week and enjoys being an Airbnb hostess. Her daughter, Cristina Alonso, recently founded another birth center in Mexico City. Like the one in Chiapas, it is called Luna Maya. Her son, Santiago Alonso-Lord, is VP Product Management at C2FO in Kansas City, Mo. Susan writes, “Last summer, finally I made it to the city of my dreams, Porto, Portugal. As you can see I was in 7th heaven. We also spent a few days revisiting our favorite spots in Paris, and we dined and wined with my Spanish in-laws in Madrid and Valencia, Spain. (My Spanish husband died three years ago.)”

1959 John Dille teaches a course in journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. He visited with classmate Mac Harris in September 2016.

1967 Andrew French and his wife, Kate, have returned to New York, after spending most of the last year in Berkeley, Calif., home of four of their grandchildren. He reports that they are enjoying it and the rest of the East coast “as if we’d returned after years away.” He recently had lunch in Boston in October with Max Bardeen, “so we can plot our return to Lake Forest next fall for our 50th.”

Chris Wetzel is in his final year of teaching psychology at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., ironically the same year that two LFA alumni entered Rhodes as freshmen. He will take a sabbatical next year, followed by retirement after 34 years of teaching. He is looking forward to his 50th LFA reunion in 2017.

He reports, “The new Student Union, the Hall of Fame, and of course the dinner at Reid Hall were elegant.” Noting that they were seated at a class of 1966 table, he said, “They were excellent hosts and told such interesting stories. Don’t forget the picnic, the game, and of course the craft beer tent. Thanks for a great day and evening. See you in two years.”

short story Paging Dr. Powell

BY RUTH KEYSO When Dr. Ernest Powell ’03 was 12 years old, a teacher assigned him and his classmates a special project: to paint portraits of their future selves.

Under Ernest’s masterpiece he wrote the words, “anesthesiologist.”

Fast-forward 19 years. He wasn’t too far off the mark.

In his fourth and final year of medical residency at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Ernest is fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a doctor. Working in the field of obstetrics and gynecology—the rotation he feared most during medical school—Ernest says he cannot imagine a more suitable or fitting profession. For someone who gets bored easily, the fast pace of his job and the constant rotation of new people and new medical challenges keep him on his toes. As for the long hours and the sometimes-frenetic nature of doctoring, Ernest says he doesn’t mind the grind.

“I’ve never minded hard work, staying up late, following up on things,” he says. “I enjoy when it’s hectic, chaotic.”

Ernest works most days from 6 a.m. til 6 p.m. and is on call every other weekend. While delivering babies and diagnosing illnesses, he is developing his bedside manner. Ernest says he strives to be direct yet empathetic with his female patients. He says it’s easy to “be-

come cold” as a doctor when you see women not taking care of their health or doing things that adversely affect the health of their babies.

But he is learning not to judge and to let go of biases when working with his patients, while at the same time making them feel at ease in his presence.

“It can be hard for [male gynecologists]; you can’t make it seem awkward,” he says. “I think my personality allows people to be comfortable with me.”

When asked about advice for aspiring doctors, Ernest says to make sure you’re choosing the profession for the right reasons.

“Don’t become a doctor for the money or because your family wants you to,” he says, noting that those things won’t get you through the long nights of studying, or help you recover after a hard day on the job. Become a doctor because you’re passionate about the profession and know that it’s how you want to spend your life, he advises.

So far, life as a doctor has been good for Ernest: the heady feeling of delivering a baby, the thrill of saving a life, the moment when a grateful patient sends a thank you card for a job well done. Ernest looks forward to completing his residency in less than one year and going into practice full time. In reflection, he’s proud to have stayed along the path he planned for himself as a young boy.

“I’ve always enjoyed learning,” he says. “Little did I know how much learning this would be.” n Ernest is a 2003 graduate of Lake Forest Academy and a 2007 graduate of the University of Illinois, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and pre-med. He also holds a master’s degree in biotechnology from Roosevelt University and his MD from Case Western Reserve. He lives in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood.

1981 Vanessa Hart was in New York for a medical conference and looked up Michelle Barge, whom she hadn’t seen in about 20 years. She notes that the pair “picked up like old times and spent the afternoon wining and dining in Brooklyn. 1990 Reid Nicholson and his wife moved to Orlando, Fla., three years ago after nearly two decades working in film and TV in Los Angeles. Now at Full Sail University, he began working with alumni as a Career Advisor; last year, he moved into a teaching position as Course Director of the Entertainment Media Distribution course in the Entertainment Business Bachelor of Science degree program. The couple “still gets to work occasionally in the industry we love.” He served as executive producer on the film Anesthesia; after the premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, it appeared in theaters in January. Their daughter, Riley, recently celebrated her 6th birthday.

If you find yourself in rural Hackberry, La., keep your eyes open for Meghan Pesch ’07. She’s the 27-year-old project engineer in a hard-hat, steel-toed boots, and fire-retardant clothing working on the construction site of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility.

Meghan has been with CB&I, an American engineering and construction behemoth, for five years. She started in a rotational training program, which exposed her to all sides of the business, from engineering and construction, to procurement and investor relations. She later took on a role as lead civil engineer at an ethylene facility in Houston before landing her current position as project engineer in Louisiana, helping to construct a facility to move natural gas through the Gulf of Mexico and the Panama Canal.

She describes her complex role simply: “I make sure that the project is moving forward and the engineering disciplines are aligned,” she explains.

A civil engineer by training, Meghan can pinpoint the moment in time when she chose this industry for her career. The year was 2003; the place was LFA. “I had freshman physics with Mr. Dean. He was an aerospace engineer. The examples he gave in class, the things he did, had tangible application,” she explains. “This was my first introduction to engineering; he was the first engineer I’d ever run across.”

Inspired by the real-life application of the discipline, Meghan went on to earn her degree in civil engineering from Tufts University. When she graduated, she thought she’d work in design, perhaps constructing buildings or bridges. But the exposure she received at CB&I made her realize there’s a lot more to the industry than designing steel and concrete structures. There’s fieldwork that involves a multidisciplinary approach, something that appeals to her.

A typical day has Meghan up early and on site for a 6:30 a.m. safety meeting with engineers, construction management, and craft people —those who dig the dirt and pour the concrete—followed by hours of

Look at the big picture. troubleshooting problems in the field. These might include misalignments between a pylon and a foundation; obstacles standing in the way of steel beams; or other issues that require conferencing with the home office in Baton Rouge. Solving problems keeps her occupied and intellectually challenged, she says.

“The problems are usually interdisciplinary; there might be 1,000 solutions, but what would be best from a scheduling, cost, and safety standpoint?” Meghan explains. “It’s not just a math problem anymore; you have to think strategically.”

Having a good attitude is also key to succeeding in her field, she says. Meghan has had to relocate as projects demand—West Virginia, England, Texas, Louisiana. While it can be challenging to adjust to a new locale, each place has prepped her with skills that will help in attaining her long-term goal of becoming a project manager.

Her advice for young people entering the workforce? Be open-minded.

“That’s something that LFA taught me,” she says. “Know that there will be steps [along the way] that are not exactly what you want to do.

In her boutique-office on the first floor of a two-floor flat located 15 minutes from downtown Kigali, Rwandan fashion designer Sonia Mugabo ’08 is thinking up ways to make people feel beautiful.

Two years ago, Sonia started her eponymous fashion line. Working alongside an assistant and a tailor, the trio surround themselves with samples of Sonia’s clothes and sketchbooks, working to create a line of clothing that fits and flatters both women and men.

“I design everyday-dress that’s boho and comfortable,” says Sonia, describing her garments. “I use primarily chiffon and crepe. They’re flowy and fold easily.”

Sonia knew from a young age that she wanted to work in design.

As a child, she cut up anything she could get her hands on—tablecloths, colorful Rwandan paper money—to make dresses for her Barbie dolls. During her year as a student at LFA, she took courses in drawing and photography and 3-D design, even enrolling in an architecture class in Chicago to learn more about that discipline. She ultimately earned her degree in visual communications and graphic design from Buena Vista University in Iowa in 2013.

Three years ago Sonia returned to her native Rwanda to make a name for herself as an entrepreneur. Despite worries from her pragmatic parents—both lawyers—who encouraged her to do fashion “on the side” while working a more stable job, Sonia followed her heart. These days she is a pioneer in the young, but burgeoning, fashion industry in Rwanda, a place where opportunity abounds for young entrepreneurs, especially females, like 26-year-old Sonia, who considers herself “privileged” to be among the vanguard during this exciting time in her country’s history.

She finds inspiration everywhere: through websites such as Refinery29 and Pinterest; magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar; and designers she admires, especially Diane Von Furstenberg. Sonia’s designs, colors, and fits also reflect her surroundings. “It’s always spring in Rwanda,” she says. “So I like to create comfortable, loose clothes. Resort-wear.”

Sonia hopes to make her brand a global, household name and to be a role model for other Rwandan girls who dream about careers in the fashion industry. So far, she specializes in clothing for women and men, but hopes to branch out into accessories once she grows more comfortable with her business.

Being an entrepreneur and a fashion designer has had its challenges, Sonia admits. It’s hard to be a creative, while also running the business side of an enterprise. But, while learning to do things on her own, she has gained great knowledge and now understands how to manage her finances more effectively. “I feel like I’ve been to business school,” she says, laughing.

It’s easy to give up. But every day I [envision] where I want my brand reaching. This motivates me to keep going, to set goals for myself Sonia’s advice for aspiring designers is simple: Start small and have a vision.

Nick Ustaski graduated magna cum laude from the University of Delaware in the spring 2016 with a degree with distinction due to the successful passing of his Senior Thesis. The Thesis, “The Miracle on Ice: The Game that Changed the World,” reflects the importance of the 1980 Winter Olympics in the context of the Cold War and the Olympic games’ effect on the sport of ice hockey even today. It will be sent to various sports and Cold War historical journals for publication in the near future. Last March, LFA Director of Hockey Operations and Nick’s former coach Darrin Madeley let Nick’s University of Delaware Ice Hockey team practice at LFA when they were in town for the national tournament. Nick is proud to announce he currently attends the Chicago Kent College of Law and is so far enjoying his 1L year of legal studies. He also reports that he had the chance to watch his brother, Matt Ustaski ’12, at the NHL Winnipeg Jets Prospect Camp this past summer. Matt is currently a junior and plays Division 1 collegiate Ice Hockey for the University of Wisconsin.

Greta Nagel received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Northwestern University in June 2016. Greta graduated cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

2013 Charles Gallagher graduated from Officer Candidate School in August 2016. He will be commissioned as an officer in the Marines after graduation in May. Charles is currently studying engineering at the University of Illinois—Champaign.

Alumnus’ Planned Gift Will Benefit Historical Study and Research at LFA LFA received a $25,000 gift from the estate of Mark H. Sokolsky ‘68. Mr. Sokolsky, a lawyer and American history enthusiast, died on May 19, 2016. His gift will be used to purchase American history resources for the school. Mark’s wife, Susan, visited the Academy on October 28, 2016 and presented the school with Mr. Sokolsky’s generous gift. History Department Chair Chris Dozois ’84 said, “This gift not only allows us to make significant additions of U.S. history resources to our library’s permanent collection, but it will also give us the ability to provide digital sources, as well as database access for many years moving forward.” Sokolsky had supported the LFA library in the past; Director of the Library and Archivist Rita Schulien MacAyeal ’87 added, “This is a truly exciting opportunity to provide a rich variety of resources to students and faculty engaged in the process of historical research.” Head of School John Strudwick, who hosted the group, acknowledged the impact of this gift, saying, “We are grateful for Mark’s dedication to LFA and the teaching of history.

Helen James Long died on August 19, 2016. Born on May 3, 1915 in Connecticut, she was one of the oldest Ferry Hall alumnae. Helen matriculated from Ferry Hall to the University of Southern California during the Great Depression, majoring in liberal arts. There she met her husband of 67 years, Harry George Long, and initiated her role as doyenne by serving as the President of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Living in Brentwood for more than 30 years, she was Past President of The National Charity League, a member of The Beverly Club, the Old California Golf Club in Cheviot Hills, The Beach Club, and Bel Air Country Club. Later retiring to Newport Beach and Indian Wells, Calif., she and her husband were members of the Balboa Bay Club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, and Desert Horizons Country Club in Indian Wells until his death in 2008. Known as an avid golfer, she continued to play until the age of 86. Bridge remained a favorite pastime until her death. She also followed tennis, golf, and baseball, particularly the LA Dodgers. She is survived by her daughter, Lucinda, and her son, Harry, Jr., and their respective families.

Dort “Duke” Fauntleroy, 91, passed away August 31, 2016. His maternal grandfather was J. Dallas Dort, who was instrumental in the formation of General Motors. His paternal grandfather was T.S. Fauntleroy, Owner of Moline Malleable Company. After graduating from Lake Forest Academy, Dort enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in the 324th Infantry during World War II, receiving various commendations. Post-war, Dort returned to school and graduated with a B.S. in engineering from Lehigh University in 1954. After graduation, he came home to Illinois to join the family foundry business, becoming a creative force in building the company as President and CEO of Moline Malleable/Moline Corporation, and President and CEO of Dort Metallurgical in St. Charles, Ill. In his rebellious youth, Dort enjoyed riding his Harley and summers on the Cisco Chain of Lakes in Northern Wisconsin, where he developed his life-long love of fishing.

He had a gentle smile, quiet sense of humor and an intense curiosity about the mysteries of life. Dort and Carol enjoyed vacations with their family and friends on the beach on Sanibel Island. And he forged many friends and community ties as a life-long member of Geneva Golf Club, the Geneva Lion’s Club, Dunham Woods Riding Club, and The First Congregational Church of Geneva. He was also a 59-year member of the Tebala Shriners, and served on the board of Delnor Hospital. Dort was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Carol Wiek Fauntleroy; he is survived by his daughter, Jean Fauntleroy ’73, of Ft. Myers, Fla; son, David Fauntleroy of Geneva, and two grandsons, Patrick (Caitlin) of Chicago, and Andrew of Geneva.

1942 Frances Herndon Chandler died September 2, 2016. After graduation from Ferry Hall, Frances attended Northwestern University; she graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where she served as President of Kappa Alpha Theta and Alpha Epsilon Rho. During World War II she initiated a drive selling more than $750,000 of War Bonds, for which she earned national recognition. Post war, she married Lt. Harvey A. Heller, Jr., a Tulsa oilman. She served as President of the Tulsa Junior League, Tulsa Town Hall, Tulsa Shakespeare Club, Lo-High Investment Club (which she co founded) and the Auxiliary for Tulsa Summer Musicals. In addition, she served on the boards of the YWCA, Friends of the Tulsa County Library, Hillcrest Medical Center Foundation, the Children’s Medical Center and the Yorktown Condominium, as well as the Altar Guild of St. John’s Episcopal Church for 16 years, where she was a Lay Reader at St. John’s Episcopal Church and read at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Oklahoma Day. Frances wrote poetry and short stories and produced and performed in comedic and dramatic “Two Women Shows”. She delighted audiences with her clever introductions of Tulsa Town Hall speakers such as Ann Landers, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Olivia de Havilland, Gloria Swanson and Steve Forbes. She was named Theta of the year by the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumna group and was honored at the Junior League of Tulsa, Inc’s 90th Anniversary Gala. Her memberships in Tulsa organizations included Southern Hills Country Club and The Tulsa Club. She is survived by her two daughters, Ann Heller Butler and Cathy Heller Keating; her son-in-law, Governor Frank Keating; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step daughters. She was predeceased in 1993 by her husband Alanson William Chandler, whom she married in 1988; siblings Gertrude Herndon Martin ’35, Tom Herndon, and Ches Herndon also preceded her in death.

1946 Ed Fox, 87, passed away on June 22, 2016. Eddie will be remembered for his boundless generosity and kindness by many in the Carmichael community. And he’ll be missed seen riding his bike along Fair Oaks Blvd and sipping coffee at Bella Bru. Eddie grew up in Evanston, Ill., and also lived in Chicago and Des Moines, but moved to California in 1968 for the culture and weather. After LFA, he attended Northwestern University and then served in the U.S. Army.

Eddie worked in the produce business all of his adult life and retired from Blue Anchor Inc. in 1993. After retiring, Eddie dedicated his life to community service in education and his 13 grandchildren. Eddie is survived by his brother Robert, six children Biffy Cotter, JJ Fox, Joe Fox, Tom Fox, Abby Fox, Annie Fox Langdale and 13 grandchildren.

1948 Frederick “Ted” William Motschman, 87, died on September 22, 2016. Ted graduated from LFA and then from Lawrence University with a degree in English. He built the Mt. La Crosse Ski Resort from the ground up and ran the successful resort for 47 years. The Wisconsin State High School Ski and Snowboard Championships are still held at the resort today. He skied from age two until age 83. Ted also loved fly fishing, especially in Ireland. He was a director of the National Ski Areas Association, was a prominent member of the La Crosse community, and was actively involved in Heritage Hill in Green Bay for

many years. Ted was known for his humor, natty clothes, storytelling, and singing. He is survived by his wife of ten years, Maureen Schleisner Motschman; his children: Frederick “Fritz” Motschman, and Caroline Motschman; his step-children: Susan H. Schleisner, and Jed (Susan M.) Schleisner; grandchildren Andrea Motschman, Alejandro Motschman, and Martin Motschman and step-grandchildren Madeline “CeCi” Schleisner and Isabella “Isy” Schleisner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Kohl Motschman, of La Crosse.

Peter Harrington Zischke, 85, died on June 21, 2016. Following his graduation from LFA, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1952, where he was a member of Alpha Delta fraternity. Pete’s parents moved to California when he was a college freshman; while visiting California, he met Midge Oliver. Pete and Midge were married in 1953 in Oakland, Calif. After Dartmouth, Pete entered Officer Candidate School in Virginia, graduating as a Lieutenant. He served in post-war Japan, and bride Midge came to stay with him in Yokohama. The Army would ship his car over, but not his wife, so Midge’s parents funded her transportation. Their first child was born in Yokohama, and this apparently triggered spousal travel coverage. The family returned from Japan on a military transport ship in 1955, and settled in Orinda, Calif. Pete began work for the Zischke Organization, his father’s insurance and pension business, which then had offices in Chicago, Portland, and San Francisco. His brother Jim also worked there, and together Pete and Jim transformed the Zischke Organization from primarily an insurance business into a pioneering, fee-based consulting firm specializing in pension planning and profit sharing plans, one of the first of its kind. The business grew steadily through the 1960s, and then expanded dramatically following the 1974 passage of the ERISA, the federal law governing pension plans.

In 1982, The Zischke Organization merged with the Wyatt Company, a national pension firm, and Pete served on the Wyatt Board of Directors for several years, until his retirement in 1986. He was also active in the Western Pension & Benefits Council.

In Orinda, Pete and Midge had three more children, and were active in a wide variety of community and educational organizations, including the Sleepy Hollow Tennis Club. Pete became a great fan of Midge’s alma mater, the University of California, and together they were avid Cal football and basketball fans. With a passion for the American West, he took several cross country road trips with college and boyhood friends, and spent one summer working on a hardscrabble Wyoming ranch. His college senior thesis was entitled “The American Cowboy: Myth and Reality,” and throughout his life he enjoyed assembling a collection of western memorabilia. Pete and family spent many weekends in the outdoors, primarily camping at Markleeville, Calif., and later in Idaho. In 1970, he and several other Dartmouth classmates in the Bay Area instituted the “52-72” program, whereby groups of Dartmouth students from the class of 1972 would spend a term doing community service in Richmond or Oakland. All of these students spent time with the family, and a number of them spent a term or a summer living in the family home in Orinda.

An active member of the Bohemian Club, he served as Membership Chair, a Director, Treasurer, and President from 1999 to 2001. Pete

also served on the Board of Regents of the University of the Pacific for 14 years, where he was on the capital campaign committee and leadership council. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Marian “Midge” Oliver; his children and their spouses: Michael (Nadin Sponamore), Kurt (Tori), Marian Baldauf (Hans), and Karen Zischke (Bob Hackett) and his grandchildren: Julie and Jessica Zischke, Alexandra Zischke, Fritz and Liesl Baldauf and Alice, Hannah and William Hackett. His siblings Jim Zischke ’40 and Julie Allenby predeceased him.

1949 Jack Ewing passed away July 9, 2016, at the age of 84. He attended the Normal School in Macomb, Ill., and spent his senior year at LFA. He went on to Knox College and transferred to the University of Virginia. The draft took him to the Korean War, and he served in the artillery. He received four military decorations: Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star, and UN Service Medal. Returning to the University of Virginia, he served as editor of the Virginia Spectator and graduated with a B.A. in history. He worked as an announcer, news editor and salesman with radio stations in Petoskey, Harbor Springs and East Lansing, Mich., and returned to Macomb to pursue a degree in accounting at Western Illinois University (1973). He joined the Union National Bank in the marketing department, and served as a director and vice president.

He also was a member of the board of directors of the State Bank of Industry. The McDonough County YMCA presented him the Service to Youth Award in 1974. Jack was an avid pilot (both instrument and multi-engine ratings), and sailor; he never passed up a chance to visit an airport or marina. Despite a stroke in October 2000, he remained involved in civic life in a variety of communities. He was a member of Rotary, Macomb Beautiful, Sigma Nu, the Elks, Masonic Lodges in Macomb, Rushville and Quincy, Ill.; American Legion, University of Virginia Jefferson Society, The National Society of Madison Family Descendants of Monticello, Va., Lake Charlevoix Assoc., Water and Air Team Charlevoix (WATCH), Tip O’ The Mitt Watershed Council and the Charlevoix Yacht Club. He supported the Congregational Church of Charlevoix, Presbyterian Church of Macomb and Unitarian Church of Quincy and Sun City Center. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; sister, Harriet (Brian) Harburn; brother-in-law, John (Clarissa) Leonard; and three nephews, Philip, Charles, and Robert Leonard.

1952 Lalla Peterson Goodwillie died on her birthday, September 4, 2016, at age 82, in Corpus Christi, Tex. She and her husband moved to the Coastal Bend from Horseshoe, Tex., in 2011. After graduating from Ferry Hall, she matriculated at Brown University’s Pembroke College, Providence, RI, for two and a half years before taking a semester off for an extended trip to Europe. She then decided to finish college closer to

in memoriam home at Northwestern University, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Spanish. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She worked at the Chilean Consulate in Chicago before marrying John Goodwillie on April 12, 1958 at her church, St. Mary’s Episcopal, in Crystal Lake, Ill. They honeymooned in Mexico and took up residence in Long Beach, Calif., where he was stationed in the U.S. Navy. They had four children. Their youngest daughter, Paula G. Tate, died in 2013. Lalla regularly attended services at the First Presbyterian Church of Corpus Christi, and enjoyed retirement living at Mirador.

She is survived by her husband, John Goodwillie ’52; daughter, Amy Lipkin (Stephen); sons Pete and Charles; son-in-law Ira Tate; four grandchildren; and a nephew. She was predeceased by her brother, Rick Smith; and sister, Mary Potter.

1954 Anthony “Tony” Walker White, 79, an ornithologist and retired Navy intelligence officer, died Tuesday May 31, 2016. Tony graduated from Princeton in 1958 with a B.A. in English. He immediately enlisted in the Navy, serving as a cryptologist. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Russian, he served onboard two research vessels and was stationed in Taiwan, Japan, Alaska, and Scotland. Narrowly escaping North Korean capture during the Pueblo Incident of January 1968 while serving on the USS Banner, Tony went on to become one of the Navy’s leading experts on Chinese and Soviet submarine operations. After 22 years, he retired a Commander. His last post in Washington, D.C., was Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations of the Naval Security Group. He received, among other awards, the Navy Commendation Medal and the National Defense Medal.

Upon retiring from the Navy, he earned his MBA from Loyola University Maryland, and settled in Bethesda, MD. Having an avid interest in birds since childhood, he immediately launched a new career by developing one of the first computer software programs for birders, “Bird Commander.” From there he became a great contributor to and leader of nature organizations. Active in both the Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States and the Maryland Ornithological Society, he served as President of both organizations, among other roles. He expanded the travel program of Audubon Naturalist and introduced members to birding and natural history adventures in locales such as Texas, Alaska, Ontario, and The Bahamas. For many years, he maintained the authoritative database of wild bird distribution in the U.S. and Canada. In 1997, he co-edited From Blue Ridge to Barrier Islands, a regional natural history anthology spanning four centuries.

First introduced to The Bahamas in 1971 by his wife, Katherine, he became a seasonal resident for some 25 years. During this time, he became a leading authority and champion of the region’s birds. In 1998, he authored A Birder’s Guide to The Bahama Islands (Including the Turks and Caicos), the first and only comprehensive location guide for the region. He went on to serve on the Wildlife Committee and Council of the Bahamas National Trust. He was a founding member of the Trust’s New Providence Bird Club and a constant supporter of the Annual Christmas Bird Count on New Providence, Grand

Bahama, and Abaco. In addition, Tony was the Regional Editor for the area of The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands for the prestigious journal North American Birds, which compiles quarterly bird reports for all of North America and submits them as part of the permanent and scientific ornithological record.

For nine years, Tony served on the Board of the American Birding Association. He was also the Chair for many years of ABA’s Recording Standards and Ethics Committee. He compiled 10 ABA regional bird checklists for North America and one for The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

A prolific writer, he contributed dozens of articles to publications such as Birding magazine, Bahamas Journal of Science, Audubon Naturalist News, the journal North American Birds, and Winging It. He remained active as a birder to the end of his life, accumulating an impressive life list of over 750 North American bird species, over 460 species in the West Indies, and over 3,000 on his world list. More impressive, for many years Tony held the record for most species seen in the West Indies Region.

His passion for birds was nearly matched by his love of music.

Tony long served on the Board of the Cathedral Choral Society, based at the Washington National Cathedral. He was a member of the Cosmos Club, the Racquet Club of Chicago, and past member of the Lyford Cay Club. His wife of 35 years, Katherine Porter Isham, preceded him in death. Their sons, Walker White of Boulder, CO; Nelson White, of Los Angeles, CA; and one grandson Everett White, of Boulder, CO, survive him.

1962 Devi Tandavan (nee Stephanie Goodall Miller) passed away August 9. She graced many lives with her effervescent enthusiasm, whether it was for her Bollywood dancing; her Seattle Singles Sailing activities; her pilgrimages to India and to Hawaii; for her love of the beach; for her dog Reh Reh, and her many friends. She was raised in Winnetka, Ill. and, an accomplished pianist, she graduated from the Chicago Conservatory of Music. As an arts critic for the Seattle Post Intelligencer in the late 1960s, she relished performing arts. Earlier she lived in Rome as a news correspondent. Her work later focused on health insurance and, in recent years, real estate (Coldwell Banker Danforth). In 1989 she married the late Philip Corgatelli of Seattle and they remained good friends after their divorce. She is survived by her brother Scott Miller ’61; her two sisters, Wendy Patry ’60, and Phoebe Sarno ’66; and two nephews, Todd and Scott Carville, all residing in California with their families. A Hindu consecration will be held in Kauai, Hawaii at a future date.

1964 Mary Jo “Dodie” McGibbeny Stewart died Oct. 9, 2016. Dodie is survived by her husband, Jim, and three children: Jennifer, Andrew, and Jonathan. She had lived in Prescott, Ariz., for the past nine years.

Peter Wilson passed away Nov. 5, 2016. As a young man, Peter was a natural athlete. He excelled as a star swimmer, competed in soccer, basketball, and track. While at LFA, he was regarded as an articulate student. He was asked to write press releases for the Academy’s information service and edit The Spectator. After graduating with high honors, Peter was admitted to Washington University’s prestigious pre-medical program in St. Louis. He received his undergraduate degree from Washington University in 1970, and spent a year studying abroad in Dijon, France. Peter enrolled at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago where, in 1899, his grandfather, Albert Edward Wilson, was one of the original faculty. While at John Marshall, Peter focused on presenting and arguing cases in its moot court program. When Peter became licensed to practice law in Illinois, he represented people in both civil and criminal matters. Peter moved his law practice to Wisconsin in 1992, when he married Cynthia Barr of Fontana. Peter was a skilled criminal defense attorney, but his true passion was working on and racing sports cars. Peter loved helping other people, crossword puzzles, playing racquetball, reading, witty conversation, friends, family and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Wilson; stepchildren, Oliver DeNavas and Anabel (Nick) Weeks; and grandchildren Henry and Josephine Weeks; and his brother-in-law, William Barr ’66. He was predeceased by his brother, Jeremy Wilson ’64.

Mary Ann (Shirley) MacLean, 74, passed away in August 2016.

She was the devoted wife of Barry MacLean, her husband of 49 years. She is also survived by her children Duncan (Brooke) MacLean, Gillian (John) Growdon, Adrian (Larsen) Jay ’94; as well as her children by marriage, Elizabeth Larned, Margaret (Ron) MacLean; nephew John MacLean IV ’77; and 12 grandchildren. Mary Ann attended university at Penn Hall (Pa.) and in Lausanne, Switzerland.

She met her husband, Barry, in Chicago and they were married on October 13, 1967 in Hinsdale. Barry MacLean served as the CEO of MacLean-Fogg Company and was the longtime mayor of Mettawa. Mary Ann shared his desire to serve the community and did that through her lifelong passion for the arts, history, and education.

As she raised their five children, she volunteered for countless organizations. She loved outdoor designing and gardening, was an avid traveler and explorer and an enthusiastic, 50-year supporter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Among the many ways she served were with the Illinois State Museum (Director and Chair), Illinois State Board of Education (Board Member), Union College (N.Y.) (Trustee), Chicago Zoological Society (Trustee), Chicago Botanic Garden (Trustee), The Rassias Center of Dartmouth College (Board Member), the MacLean Center for Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago Medical Center (Board Member) and Lake Forest Academy (Trustee/ Life Trustee). In 2011, the Illinois State Museum opened the Mary Ann MacLean Play Museum, as well as the Mary Ann MacLean Resource Center. After serving on the museum board for 32 years, she also provided support to create a teaching position named in her honor, dedicated to innovative educational programming. In 2013, the Brookfield Zoo cut the ribbon on the Mary Ann MacLean Conservation Leadership Center, where the Chicago Zoological Society’s Conservation, Education and Training (CET) Department works from, educating students and zoo guests on important conservation issues.

1968 Edmund R. Littell, was the beloved father of Michael (Megan) and Steve; grandfather of Ruth and Margaret; and fond brother of Frederick and Florence.

2002 Raymond Reese (Buck) Jones, 32, passed away August 30, 2016.

He earned his Eagle rank in the Boy Scouts of America and was a long standing member of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps.

After LFA, he matriculated to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, graduating in 2007. Buck worked as a maritime engineer on ships throughout the world. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy Merchant Marine Reserve and member of the Maritime Engineers’ Benevolent Association (MEBA). He was the son of James (Jay) and Michela (Micki) Jones of Rohnert Park, Ca. Ray was a brother to Shannon and a half-brother to James, Jr. and Kelly Mandella.

He was a loving uncle to Braeden Jones, Keegen Jones and Tucker Bernhardy. Services were held Monday September 5, 2016, and he was laid to rest in the veteran’s area of Santa Rosa Memorial Park.

Friends and family gathered after to celebrate his life with a “Play for Ray” at Rebounderz Indoor Trampoline Arena in Rohnert Park.

Dining Together From the “Old Hotel” to the new Student Union

BY RITA SCHULIEN MACAYEAL ’87, DIRECTOR OF THE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVIST Over the years a variety of dining facilities have provided meals to the LFA and Ferry Hall communities. The dining experience has changed throughout time, from cloth-covered tables of yesteryear where dishes were brought to the tables by students and passed family-style, to the more casual self-service cafeteria of today.

During the first years of the Academy, meals were eaten at Clark’s Hotel (later called the Old Hotel) in Lake Forest where Triangle Park is today. A student apparently set a record there by eating 17 pancakes in one meal! The Academy boys also frequently went hunting, trapping, and fishing, and would at times bring their game back for the house parents to prepare for dinner. In 1865, the Academy Building was expanded and remodeled to house a basement kitchen and dining room. A catalog from that era informed parents that “The tables are bountifully supplied with well cooked, nourishing food, which is quite as necessary for active, growing studious boys as for any other class of people.”

When Ferry Hall opened in 1869, the original building also had a dining room for students and faculty. The first school catalog noted that “teachers and pupils constitute one family; eating at the same tables… We believe a well furnished table is as necessary to the vigorous health of young ladies in school, as it is at home.”

In 1879, the original Academy building burned down and the school built a new building with a small wooden dining hall next door, known as “Academia.” In 1893, LFA relocated to a new campus on the

south end of the college grounds where each of the school’s three dormitories had separate dining facilities for their residents. According to catalogs of the time, Durand Cottage and Remsen House offered their residents small dining rooms “presided over by a Master and his wife”, while East Dormitory provided a large first floor dining hall where boys ate at tables with their dorm masters.

In 1913, Remsen House was remodeled and became the sole dining hall for all the Academy students, faculty, and their families. In the 1920s, Academy boys rotated table seatings every two weeks to encourage all students and teachers to get to know one another better. At Ferry Hall, well into the 1930s, students were required to provide their own napkins and napkin rings for the dining room. When North and South Halls were built in 1929, the school began using the spacious dining room in North Hall. The school catalog boasted that the large new dining hall had windows on three sides and could fit the whole school eating together.

In 1940, Mrs. Frank Hixon gifted the Academy with Hixon Hall, which was then used as the Academy’s main dining facility. When LFA moved to the present campus in 1948, the Armour mansion’s dining room and “Winter Garden” room were used as dining facilities. In 1985, the lower level of the Chapel was converted into Hutchinson Commons, thanks to a gift from Wyn and William Hutchinson ’34.

The school eventually outgrew the space in “Hutch”, and this year opened a brand new Student Union with an airy, bright, and spacious dining hall. Today as in the past, the LFA community continues to enjoy nurturing friendships and building community while dining together. n Lunchtime in the Reid Hall Garden Room, circa 1970s.
