WELCOME Dear LAS Community, As we approach the end of 2024, we are grateful for the support that you — our Global Family — provided to LAS in 2023-2024. From hosting events to supporting the Impact Fund (and everything in between!), the Global Family positively impacted the student and staff experience. With that in mind, we are thrilled to present the LAS Impact Report for 2023-2024!
The LAS experience lives on through the connections we forge and the shared moments we create, from our bustling residential life and athletic events to incredible cultural trips and engaging classroom discussions. Witnessing our students develop an international understanding year after year is nothing short of incredible. Our deepest appreciation goes out to our staff (who remain the backbone of the LAS experience!), the families who
contribute to our school in countless ways, and the alumni who carry the LAS spirit wherever they go. This year, we expanded the scope of the Impact Fund, supporting fifteen projects across the entire school. Another highlight was the Senior Gift program, empowering graduating seniors to give back to LAS in a meaningful and impactful way. Our seniors chose a new and improved BEC gym for the 2024 Senior Gift, and they helped us secure funding for the improvements. None of this would have been

possible without the support of our Global Family. You have made a profound impact on our students and staff, and we are confident that, with your help, the LAS experience will remain true to our mission for generations to come. Elijah ‘26 Padded Combat Club
Sonia Capide LAS Faculty and Hike Leader for 4000m Club For me this trip was an opportunity for the students to build resilience. It was also a good lesson for students not to judge someone by their physical appearance. Our youngest participant was a girl of a petite size who ended up being our strongest student on the hike. Climbing a 4,000 meter peak with crampons on the snow and enjoying breathtaking views of the Swiss, Italian and French Alps from the summit provides our students with a unique and unforgettable experience. For me the best is to hear from a student: I am glad I am here, otherwise I would just be in a town shopping, spending money, being bored. Let’s do another one! 6
Giulio ‘27 4000m Club Participant I loved the challenge and thrill of climbing the Breithorn, and the views from the top were absolutely stunning. This trip gave me unforgettable memories!
Thanks to the Impact Fund, over the last year we were able to go up to Finland and participate in events as the Padded Combat Club. This was a tremendous help to show people in Finland that a group of highly motivated individuals could come up from another country and participate flawlessly. This is an impressive accomplishment as this sport is very localized to Finland and many people in Finland believed that this sport would not be popular outside of Finland. Because of this opportunity, we showed that it is popular and it’s growing. Thanks to this trip funded by the Impact Fund it also opened up opportunities later in the year to head up and participate in larger events with more people which brought more notoriety to the scene here in Switzerland.

I’m the recipient of the Ted Groom Memorial Scholarship for 2024-2025 and it is a great honour for me. My parents are both teachers at the school and were friends, colleagues and neighbours with Mr. Groom - people tell me that I, like Mr Groom, have a love of the outdoors.
Last year, I applied with my research paper to the acclaimed International Young Researchers Conference in Japan (IYRC), organised by Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and supported by Harvard Alumni for Global Women’s Empowerment, Berkeley PATH to Care Center, Harvard College Center for Public Service and Engaged Scholarship, and the International Collaboration and Exchange Program. In the paper, I explored generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as panic attacks and tinnitus, in the form of a health narrative. I utilised it to advocate for promoting mental health awareness and stigmatisation most prevalently surrounding anxiety disorders, as they often do not result in physical manifestations of the troubled state of the mind.
Five years ago I had a knee injury that stopped me from doing sports. This was a crushing blow. After the three years it took to heal, I got the all-clear and joined the LAS freeride team, a school sponsored activity where a group of students are taken off-piste by a guide. It gives us the opportunity to learn about and experience unpisted slopes. Since then, I have wholeheartedly pursued my love for the outdoors and I don’t miss any opportunity that comes my way. Thank you for your support of this scholarship – it makes it possible for me to participate in the many LAS outdoor activities. 8

Young Researchers Conference in Japan
Thanks to the generous financial support from LAS Impact Fund, I had the wonderful opportunity to present an extended abstract of my paper at the University of Tokyo in June 2024. Since then, my full paper has been
published—I am extremely proud to have accomplished this at the age of sixteen. This trip was one of the best experiences in my life, as it fulfilled two of my greatest ambitions and dreams. It permitted me to develop my scientific skills on a larger scale as well as to immerse myself culturally in Japan through visiting Tokyo’s most iconic sites, such as the Tokyo Tower, the famed Shibuya Crossing, or Miraikan Museum. During the conference, I attended lectures given by Ivy League students, a Tokyo University professor as well as my peers, which greatly expanded my perspective about the various facets of the scientific world. I had a splendid chance to perform networking and study subjects ranging from physics to topics in computer science and gender performance.
This event had a truly international spirit, with other peers derived from countries such as the Philippines, United States, New Zealand, India and Korea. I was the only European student who was able to participate in-person instead of virtually, highlighting how the LAS Impact Fund’s contribution allowed for this brilliant experience. I would like to reiterate my fullest gratitude to everyone who supports the Impact Fund!
