an Australian record training 167 winners in a single season and brought in over $500 million in career prize money. And Verry Elleegant’s first place in the 2021 Melbourne Cup is still a clear and resounding moment. “The minute she crossed the finishing line, the phone did not stop ringing for two days straight,” says Chris. “You win a big race; you get a lot of phone calls and messages.” The 2021 win wasn’t just another career defining milestone for Chris, it was life changing. The wave of attention from Australian and international media, coupled with recognition from the public, set it apart from other wins.
“My family always had a few horses around the farm and racing was a topic of conversation in the house,” he says. “I’m a keen admirer of sport and once I started working with horses, I loved it and enjoyed the thrill, excitement and challenges involved.” Training champions doesn’t happen overnight, and in the stables, qualifications are only one part of the story. The qualities that Chris values contribute to the overall environment. “We’re working towards a long-term goal, and it takes a year, perhaps even longer, of preparation,” he says. “So you want good patient people with a kind nature who appreciate

Selecting horses isn’t all that different from building the right team and the makings of a future champion often start with two defining traits obvious from the outset. “First things I look for are a kind nature and good attitude and you tend to find both quite early,” he says. “Working with horses 24/7 365 days a year, you need to know what you’re working with and be happy with that decision.”

New talent, reigning champions and old rivalries are a given in the sporting world. And while no year is ever the same, Chris is always a little apprehensive coming into a new season. “It’s a matter of consistency and ensuring the correct recipe and foundation,” he says. “We’re getting the right systems in place, then that transcends into putting the right horses in the right races along with the right jockeys and training regime to ensure we get the optimum performance out of each individual.” The 2026 Spring Carnival will bring together an elite group of finely tuned horses and hopefully see Chris back in the headlines. “Racing is in a great space at the moment and it’s getting recognition for the right reasons as well as attracting a good following on and off the field,” he says. “Having representation at all those major race days is important for a big team like us as well as the success that comes during the season.”

Engineered to captivate with every drive, the eighth-generation Lexus ES has arrived and it’s more than just the latest addition to an already impressive range; it reinforces the brand’s proud and storied heritage in pioneering hybrid and battery technology. Between 2025 and 2026, EV sales in Australia surged 130 percent with hybrid sales increasing 77 percent in the same period. The electric vehicle market shows no signs of slowing down and Lexus is here to lead the charge. The All-New Lexus ES will be available with a battery-electric (BEV) powertrain for the first time in the model’s history. At launch, there will be two BEV models, the ES 350e and ES 500e, both specified in flagship Sports Luxury equipment level. When the Hybrid (HEV) ES joins the range later in the year, it will be available in a Luxury variant with an optional Enhancement Pack. “Lexus are certainly putting a lot of options on the table when it comes to luxury and refinement and especially in terms of electrified powertrains,”says Lexus of Parramatta New Cars Sales Consultant Ben Brannen The All-New ES is as beautiful to look at as it is to drive. Refined styling enhances the aerodynamics, the sleek flowing form gives the impression of no trunk and semi-flush door handles blend seamlessly into the bodywork.

“It’s sleek, sporty, amazing to drive and is incredibly stable on the road,” says Ben. “The way the car handles feels a lot lighter and responsive than comparative vehicles on the market.” Exclusive to the RZ 550e F Sport, the Steer-by-Wire (SBW) system creates a driver-focused experience emulating a racing cockpit. Differing from a conventional steering system with no mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels, instead inputs are relayed via electric signals. Across all variants, the suspension system has been finely adjusted to promote dynamic performance and balance between handling stability and ride comfort. “The suspension system is incredibly advanced,” says Ben. “Under heavy breaking or acceleration, the car won’t pitch or tilt forward like a traditional car would, as the system limits this to a great extent.” Considered the flagship of the line-up, the RZ 550e F Sport includes Australia’s first yoke steering wheel, which can turn from centre to full left or right lock in about 200 degrees, eliminating the need for hand-over-hand movement. The F Sport is also equipped with enhanced Lexus DIRECT4 intelligent all-wheel drive and Interactive Manual Drive, a virtual eight-speed manual transmission. “It’s a technology that enables the driver to feel the sensations of manual gear selection in a battery electric vehicle,” says Ben. “Sometimes driving an EV feels more akin to a device than a vehicle and this is not like that. The RZ makes you feel engaged while driving, the acceleration, braking and steering are all superior and the F Sport certainly takes that to a new level.” Harnessing two decades of hybrid battery innovation, the All-Electric RZ delivers pure performance, efficiency and luxury. “There are so many benefits to investing in an electric vehicle,” he says. “Charging is effortless. There are no CO2 emissions and you’re no longer beholden to fuel prices.”

“The Hunter Valley is famous for its Semillon and Shiraz, but there’s also an exciting modern dining culture here,” says Jodie. “You’ll find everything from elegant degustation menus to casual vineyard lunches featuring local produce, artisan cheeses, olive oils and fresh seasonal ingredients. There’s a real focus on quality and connection to the region. People come for the wine, but they often leave talking just as much about the food.” There is an unmistakable ease to the Hunter Valley. In fact, the region seems to have its own rhythm, one that visitors settle into easily. “Slow breakfasts, a few cellar doors, lunch overlooking the vineyards, maybe a spa treatment or round of golf in the afternoon and then dinner and drinks as the sun goes down,” says Jodie. “Others spend their days cycling between wineries, enjoying cooking classes, horse riding or simply relaxing by the pool. The beauty of the Hunter Valley is that there’s no pressure and every itinerary feels right.” There are plenty of ways to experience the Hunter Valley, but few are as effortless and enjoyable as a stay at Château Élan, a refined retreat nestled among vineyards and rolling countryside.

n an age constantly looking for the next big thing, Florentino is a reminder that some experiences never go out of style.
Restaurants come and go. Trends rise, fade and fall. But every so often, a place transcends hospitality and becomes part of a city’s story. Welcome to Florentino. For almost 100 years, this beloved institution has been serving up sophisticated Italian dishes, cherished memories and a healthy dose of nostalgia. Florentino is one of Melbourne’s most iconic Italian restaurants and among Australia’s longest continuously operating restaurants; a remarkable feat in an industry where longevity is anything but guaranteed. In fact, having been established in 1928, it will celebrate its centenary in 2028. “Florentino is more than a restaurant,” says edition Hospitality Culinary Director Michael Greenlaw. “It is a place of memory, ritual and celebration, woven into Melbourne’s cultural fabric.” Within its bustling 80 Bourke Street precinct, the destination is home to three distinct venues. At its heart is Florentino Dining Room, located upstairs the flagship restaurant is known for its historic murals, grand atmosphere and refined Italian cuisine. “The menu draws on almost a century of recipes, reinterpreting traditional Italian flavours through a contemporary Melbourne lens,” says Michael. Downstairs, guests will find Café Florentino, a more relaxed trattoria-style restaurant that centres on a wood-fired grill inspired by the great steakhouses of Florence and the culinary traditions of Tuscany. Then there’s the Cellar Bar. A much-loved fixture since the 1950s, this intimate wine and pasta bar is warm, welcoming and captures the charm of a European neighbourhood hideaway.

The Coral Trout with spanner crab, zucchini and bisque, the Pumpkin Tartlet snack and the mushroom risotto topped with local black truffle from Red Hill Truffles are among the highlights. “House made pasta is central to the menu, with the current standout being the caramelle filled with smoked onion, Jerusalem artichoke and hazelnut,” says Michael. Drawing on the culinary traditions of Tuscany, Café Florentino takes a more relaxed approach. The menu centres on exceptional local produce, handmade pastas, and dishes cooked over woodfire and charcoal.
