Registration Information Registration begins Tuesday, August 20th, 2024 at 6am. Non-resident registration begins Tuesday, August 27th, 2024. We encourage you to visit our web page at lexingtonma.gov/recreation. Registration is first come, first served. All participants must register, submit payment and a waiver release in order to be eligible to participate in a program. We accept cash, check, MasterCard, VISA, or Discover for payments.

Financial Aid Requests are available online or by calling. This confidential application process is through the Human Services Department. The amount of financial aid provided is determined by individual need and available funds through the Recreation Enterprise Fund. Thank you to the Fund for Lexington for supporting a portion of the annual scholarship funds.

Cancellation Policy Cancellations must be submitted in writing via the online request form a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the start of a program or service. A $25.00 processing fee will be incurred for all cancellations unless otherwise noted. Cancellations received less than two weeks prior to the start of a program or service do not qualify for a credit. Credit requests may be given for medical reasons and requires a physician's note. The remaining balance will be in the form of a credit to the household account in which the original registration was made. In the event a program is canceled due to low enrollment or inclement weather (only when a make-up is not available), a full refund will be given. Credits are available up to one calendar year from the date applied.

Youth Programs Archery $195 Resident $205 Non-Resident Archery is an individual sport that provides the opportunity for anyone to do well. The benefits of archery include exercise, mental focus, self-discipline, and social interaction with peers. This program teaches the fundamentals of good form, technique, and how to be safe. Taught by Shawn Bowlby who has 20+ years of experience and has won the national indoor championship 8 times. Archery equipment is provided.

Chess - Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Beginner: Chess is a fun and strategic game that can improve decision-making, strategic thinking, analytical skills, and more. We will learn the names of pieces, how they move, basic tactics, openings, checkmates, and endgames. Classes include 30-40 minutes of instruction with 20-30 minutes of supervised play.

Intermediate: Participants who already know how to move pieces can participate in this session. You will learn intermediate to advanced tactics, strategies, learn about openings, middle games, and endgames. We will focus on how to play in tournaments.

Advanced: Kids who are active players in tournaments or who are willing to participate in tournaments can sign up for this class. This is a competitive class and the class will be taught with more advanced strategies and focus on tournament playing skills. We will also do a lot of puzzles and write notations so please bring a pencil and a score book if you have one.

BUDA (Boston Ultimate Disc Alliance) Ultimate Frisbee Clinics BUDA youth frisbee offers fun and competitive frisbee for children in grades K-12. Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact sport that encourages a lot of running and teamwork. For middle school and high school age players, we'll teach more advanced skills, tactics, and strategy to allow them to compete at higher levels. For those ages, we'll have matches against teams/programs from other towns. We have a child-centered approach where we tailor instruction to the needs of each child as best we can.

We use "Call your own fee" which lets parents choose the right fee at registration. No emails, no questions, just click it and go. We don't want anyone sidelined due to financial constraints.

New—Land of Ithreach: Dungeons & Dragons Go on an adventure set in the land of Ithreach, a fantasy setting where the seasons change and the story grows.

Returning—An Ongoing Campaign For D&D Heroes Continue your Dungeons & Dragons adventures on Thursdays. Old friends and new enemies await as we journey together into the unknown, ready to take action at every turn. Girls Basketball Player Development Program (PDP) Clinics The Player Development Program (PDP) provides an opportunity for girls to learn more about the game of basketball in a fun, welcoming, and positive environment. Adrienne Mugar, former pro basketball player, Boston University Women's Basketball captain, and current LHS Girls Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach, will lead the 5-week clinics for girls in grades 1-5.

Beginner PDP Clinic - This introductory skills clinic for girls in grades 1-3 will provide a solid foundation and overall excitement about basketball for girls to build upon. The basics of the game, skillwork, and teamwork concepts will be covered.

Advanced PDP Clinic – This is an advanced clinic for girls in grades 3-5 where more complex skills will be taught and carried over into small games and scrimmages. *Prior playing experience is recommended.

Let the Mass Wildlife Angler Education Program be your guide.

We’ll have equipment on hand for use, as well as terminal tackle, and live bait. You’ll learn the basics from casting out to baiting up. And the best part – you’ll actually be able to fish. So come try your hand at this great pastime, guaranteed to catch some fun! Please note: children ages 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Youth Programs Kids Test Kitchen $255 Resident • $265 Non-Resident Each class presents students with an opportunity to explore new or familiar foods in their raw, unmanipulated state. Then, working as a team, we’ll slice, dice, peel, measure, and cook until we’ve prepared the finished dish. During this in-person session we’ll celebrate ingredients that will offer ideas for quick and healthy dishes for the family to enjoy together. At the end of class your aspiring chef will receive the main ingredient, or a sample of the finished dish, and the recipe. Each session arrives with fresh new recipes and ideas to inspire your healthy eater! Kids have food allergies, but they shouldn’t miss out on the fun. We know allergies and can work around them, making sure that everyone is having fun and staying safe.

The Lexington Wrestling Club, under the direction of Seth Kamich, aims to introduce young girls and boys to the sport of wrestling. Successful wrestlers come in all shapes and sizes and it teaches discipline, mental and physical toughness, and sportsmanship: character traits that will serve well outside the ring for a lifetime. Participants will need to provide their own wrestling shoes, headgear, and mouthguard. Opportunities to wrestle against surrounding communities on Saturdays will be available, and wrestlers can participate in the youth tournaments in February.

Come spend some time with your wee one(s) exploring some of the many beautiful natural spaces that are available to us in Lexington. The program will begin with a story about the nature around us, then you will play games and explore the site with an eye out for the topic of the day. There is so much out there to see, hear, touch and smell!

Pump It Up Basketball | $195 Resident • $205 Non-Resident Under the direction of Lexington standout and college coach Dan Holbrook and former Lexington Most Valuable Player Dan O’Keefe, Pump It Up Basketball strives to teach proper basketball fundamentals to kids who want to improve their skills, stay active, and have fun! It is the perfect program for kids who would like to try out for a team, or for those who are new to basketball. All skill levels are welcome. Through demonstrations, fun drills, and friendly competition, Pump It Up Basketball will emphasize both individual and team concepts, while stressing the importance of respect, attitude, and being a good teammate. Safe Sitter - Babysitting Training | $210 Resident • $220 Non-Resident Safe Sitter is not just a class, it's a cause. The only national training program devoted to preparing young pre-teens and teens to be safe in unsupervised settings, whether home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. SportsZone LEGO Master Builder Jr $170 Resident • $180 Non-Resident

Our Bump, Set, Spike Volleyball program, which is being led

by Sports Zone 101, is a low-pressure way to help participants learn and develop their volleyball skills. This session will include instruction on the six fundamentals of volleyball: passing, setting, spiking, serving, digging, and blocking. Players will also participate in a variety of learning activities and fun skill-building challenges and games. Players are welcome to bring their own volleyball if they would like, but it is not required. This program is open to both boys and girls. Come and play like a champion!

It takes years of practice, determination, patience, and dedication to become a Lego Master Builder. Your child is in luck though because we have worked tirelessly to perfect our Lego teaching technique – so much so that within six short weeks, your child will receive a certificate proving that they have completed their Master Builder Jr. training! Come join us as we explore and create our wildest imaginations.

We will also re-create some real-world buildings, landscapes, feats of engineering, and Wonders of the World!

Come join the Sports Zone Lieutenants as we test our individual and team effectiveness in battle! This awesome program puts a fresh spin on traditional games like capture the flag, while also allowing children to get great exercise, learn some strategic planning skills, and make new friends. Each week will feature different games with individual and teambased challenges, so the students always have something new to strive for. Youth Programs Table Tennis for Youth with Olivia Lam This program is designed for youth and teens to learn table tennis skills and stay fit. Table tennis helps improve hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and balance. Class starts with 10 minutes of warm-up, followed by practicing racket grips and basic strokes for 30 minutes. The class will end with single/double games.

Join Super Soccer Stars for some soccer fun this fall! At Super Soccer Stars, it is their goal to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Their philosophy is to use soccer to nurture, to build self-confidence, and to develop teamwork in every class. Their specially designed curricula use positive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio to ensure that each child improves at his or her own rate while having endless fun. Youth Programs Viking Basketball Clinic Viking's youth basketball clinics introduce players to the basic skills of dribbling, passing and shooting during the first half of the class, followed by a fun scrimmage during the second half; age adjusted rules and lower hoops are used as necessary. Canta y Baila Conmigo Sing and Dance With Me, Spanish Musical Culture You can take this class alongside Music Together®, or you can save it for when your child "graduates" from Music Together®.

Canta y Baila Conmigo® is a class for children up to 6 years old accompanied by an adult. This class is designed to support both Spanish language development and cultural competence through the use of children's songs and traditional music from Spain and Latin America. It is ideal for bilingual parents and caregivers seeking an authentic setting in which to interact in Spanish with their own children as well as with a broader Spanish-speaking community.

Class will be conducted in Spanish for a full immersion experience. However, this class is not limited to fluent speakers of Spanish.

Beginners and intermediate speakers wishing to learn along with their children will find a fun, safe and supportive environment in which to experience the Spanish language as well as Hispanic musical traditions. Participants will receive a songbook and CD created especially for each session.

Community Events

Loteria Fun Night Playing, laughing and having fun is the best way to learn, and even better if you can do it with your family, friends or people from your community. The Spanish Fun Program offers fun but also educational programs to kids in schools, families, adults and seniors.

Learn vocabulary in Spanish while you play, eat chips and salsa and get ready to yell out “Loteria” once you complete all the chart. Learn to say “Lo tengo”, or “No, lo tengo” (I have it or I don’t have it ) After the game, you would be familiar with all the vocabulary and you would be able to play a memory game. At the end of the program get ready to dance and sing with the Latin Rhythms.

Talk Saves Lives

Do you have topics you are passionate about? Have you ever wanted to share your stories and experiences with others? Have you lived through any notable historical events? We invite you to join us for a casual one-to-one interview about your life. This interview will be conducted by a local Lexington High School student in a comfortable and private environment. This interview will be audio recorded, and with your permission, the written transcript will be published on our website. You also have the option to take home the audio recording as a keepsake to look back on! Although the word “interview” may seem intimidating, our goal is not to discover the most thrilling stories ever but instead to capture the diverse experiences of the community around us. We hope you join in this event as a way to prevent stories from being forgotten.

Talk Saves Lives is AFSP’s standardized, 45-60 minute education program that provides participants with a clear understanding of this leading cause of death, including the most up-to-date research on suicide prevention, and what they can do in their communities to save lives. Participants will learn common risk factors and warning signs associated with suicide, and how to keep themselves and others safe.

About Penny Tsiounis Penny Tsiounis holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Simmons University School of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology from Roger Williams University. She is a Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) and is in the process of obtaining her Independent Clinical Social Work license (LICSW). Penny has been with the Lexington Human Services Department as our Youth and Family Services Manager since November 2022. Penny offers residents short-term counseling and case management and connects youth and families to community resources.

Outside of work, she loves to spend time with her 2 dogs, go for runs, and do puzzles.

Penny is available to meet with by appointment M-F 8:30-4:30.

Basketball Leagues & Clinics

18 2024-2025 Winter Basketball Leagues for the program. We will have a ZERO tolerance for behavior unbefitting. If there are any situations that arise during a practice or game, that person will be removed from the program or asked not to spectate during games.

The In-Town Basketball League is an organized recreational basketball program for boys and girls currently enrolled in grades 5-12.

The Middle School Leagues are divided up by 5th/6th graders and 7th/8th graders.

The High School League is a mix of 9th-12th graders.

We will need volunteer coaches for all leagues. If you are available and interested, please be sure to check that section off in the Q&A's.

There will be a weekly 1 hour practice for each team during the week and a game on Saturday afternoons. Practice and game times will vary throughout the season and take place at either Clarke or Diamond Middle School. You will receive the specific dates and times of all scheduled practices and games for the league before the season begins.

All of our leagues will hold all participants, volunteers, and spectators accountable to our code of conduct

For the 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Leagues there will be a Meet the Team/Coach night prior to the start of practices/games. For the High School League there will be a Team Formation Night where the teams will compete against each other to see how balanced they are. After the session, the coaches will discuss to see if any players can be moved around to try to have fair teams for the season. Both the Meet the Team/Coach and Formation Nights will take place in mid-November.

19 Winter Basketball Clinics Come join us to practice and further your basketball skills. The clinics are an instructional program where you will focus on the basic skills of basketball with proper instruction on dribbling, shooting, passing, ball handling techniques, good sportsmanship and teamwork!

You will also learn general principles of playing offense and defense, which will be taught and reinforced through instruction, drills, mini games and scrimmages!

Volunteer coaches are needed for the 1st-4th grade clinics. Please indicate in the Q&A section if you are available to assist with the skills/drills as well coaching/substituting the participants during the scrimmage time.

If you are interested in participating in the Smart Start program, please be aware that a parent/ guardian will need to be present for each participant for the duration of the program to assist with skills/drills as needed.

Tennis & Pickleball Youth Tennis Lessons Led by instructor Barry Ndinya, the Fall Youth Tennis Lessons are designed to introduce children ages 6 to 14 to the life-long sport of tennis. Tennis & Pickleball Pickleball Try out the fastest growing sport in the U.S.! Similar to table tennis, badminton, and tennis, it is a fun, active game that can be mastered by anyone. We will be offering separate sessions for Beginners (Mondays), Advanced Beginners (Tuesdays), Intermediate (Fridays), and Advanced (Thursdays) players at the Diamond Middle School. Instruction on the various strokes, serving, and overall game play will be provided during the Beginner session. PK Shiu is a PPR-Certified Pickleball Coach and will be facilitating the programs on Monday and Tuesday nights. PK has been coaching players from beginners to 3.5 level in individual and small group settings.

Age Session He is always looking to introduce more people to play Pickleball, to improve their physical and mental health and Beginner make new friends.

Creative Card Making with Marion Davis No Registration Fee Learn to design and create handmade greeting cards for all occasions. Adult Fitness Classes Chair Fitness Fun with Judy Whitney

Total Fitness with Judy Whitney Aerobic routines paired with upbeat music make up the first 30 minutes of this class.

Exercises for agility, muscle conditioning, balance and stretching complete the hour.

This workout is challenging yet safe, and easily modified for all fitness levels. A choreographer and Personal Trainer for over 25 years, Judy selects exercises from varied disciplines including dance, Yoga and Pilates to attain the best all around workout. Class will be taught in person (limited to 20) and remotely by Judy Whitney.

Looking to improve your aerobic capacity, but not yet able to stand for long periods of time? Take a seat for 30 minutes while listening to music that makes you want to dance!

Each class also includes 20 minutes of standing or seated strengthening exercises of the major muscle groups in the body. We end with a relaxing cool down. This workout is a fun way to improve your overall health. Every class is unique; no two classes are ever the same!

Forever Fit with Judy Whitney | No Registration Fee The Forever Fit program will help you develop strength, improve balance, increase flexibility and agility, build endurance, and reduce stress. Adult Fitness Classes Daoyin Meditation Teaching Program No Registration Fee Daoyin, an ancient practice dating back 1200 years in China, combines meditation and stretching movements. For our upcoming Daoyin education course, we have integrated the ancient Daoyin techniques with modern medical science, creating a unique program designed by Dr. Jing Liu, Ph.D., an esteemed integrative medical doctor in China. Our Daoyin stretching exercises primarily focus on circular and spiral motions, aiming to improve energy, blood circulation, and overall physical function.

Each class will bring you significant health benefits.

Established in 2012, the Daoyin Health Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health and well-being. Our courses have been warmly received by participants over the years.

Every Tuesday, we will meet at the Center Track, review one technique associated with walking, and then we will walk! Whether for fitness, connection, solitude, motivation, enjoyment or an interest in developing a safe walking program, this class is for you! Walk at your own pace, no pressure.

Line dancing is great fun while you improve memory skills, strengthen bones, develop better balance, relieve stress, and put a smile on your face. Each dance is broken down first, demonstrated and then danced to contemporary music that you will enjoy! No need to have a partner, it is something for everyone and no experience is necessary!

Join this fun and challenging workout that includes Pilates/Barre exercises to strengthen your abdominal “core” muscles, improve your balance, flexibility, and posture. Light weights will also be used to increase muscular strength. Modifications will be provided for all levels of experience and any physical concerns. There are weights and Pilates balls provided in the studio, but you should bring your own resistance/therapy bands and a yoga mat. Ellen Gaies is a certified instructor with over 30 years of teaching fitness classes including Pilates, Barre, Muscle Conditioning, Zumba and Ballet.

Active Agers with Carolyn Gregoire $80 Resident • $90 Non-Resident In this class we will have fun while increasing our strength, bone health, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. While listening to music, we will combine elements of muscle conditioning, functional movement for everyday activities, and intervals of cardio along with Yoga and Pilates postures. Correct form is stressed, and there is a focus on activating the proper muscles for each exercise. We will be doing some exercises standing and some while on the floor, and will incorporate weights and other forms of resistance. The end of each class will include stretching and relaxation. Africa is alive with intrastate conflict: there are devastating wars in Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic. This course will examine each of those wars and other conflicts.

Shakespeare’s Othello invites discussion about race, gender, and love, but in many ways its engagement with the nature of seemingly gratuitous and inexplicable human evil informs the timelessness of the play. Students are asked to buy the Folger edition of Othello and to bring it to each class.

The Russians Are Coming! is an exploration of the lives and music of four of the most prominent composers of the 20th century—Sergei Rachmaninoff, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich.

In Elizabeth Bishop’s poetry, acuteness of perception combines with quietly deft craft to both satisfy and unsettle the lyrical imagination. She is one of the most respected American poets of the latter half of the 20th century.
