Time for Three on the Town In late October, award-winning, genre-defying string trio Time for Three (Tf3) brought its unique brand of live music and energy to Lexington! Zach De Pue (violin), Nick Kendall (violin) and Ranaan Meyer (double base) packed a three-day residency with rehearsals, pop-up performances, concerts and educational outreach events.

At LexPhil’s American Soundscapes concert on Friday, October 23, Time for Three performed Travels in Time for Three, a concerto written specifically for the group by composer and jazz musician Chris Brubeck. After receiving an enthusiastic standing ovation, Tf3 treated the crowd to an encore performance of their arrangement Little Lion Man by the popular British folk-rock band Mumford and Sons.

While in Lexington, Tf3 also performed for patients and staff at UK HealthCare hospitals, spectators at the Keeneland Fall Meet and the happy hour crowd at Ethereal Brewery Company. (continued on page 2)

During their whirlwind tour of the Bluegrass, guest artists Time for Three participated in LexPhil’s sold-out Music Builds Discovery Concert for K-12 students! Over 1,400 students from 22 schools traveled to the Singletary Center for this special program, which explored the roots of American orchestral music. LexPhil opened with excerpts from traditional American composers Copland and Gershwin with background and context provided

by Music Director Scott Terrell.

Guest artists Time for Three then took the stage for a performance of the eclectic contemporary work Travels in Time for Three by American composer Chris Brubeck. This engaging trio soon had the entire audience clapping to the beat!

(continued from page 1) They participated in LexPhil’s sold-out educational Discovery Concert for 1,400 students and presented a music entrepreneurship assembly program for University of Kentucky students.

This Tf3 residency was made possible through the generous support of UK HealthCare and the Saykaly Garbulinska Foundation.

Each season, these partners work with LexPhil to bring talented artists to Lexington for short residencies that explore the intersection of music and health care.

The residency included a performance at Eastern State Hospital, which specializes in mental health treatment and recovery.

This special concert left a lasting impression on both the patients and musicians. Tf3’s Nick Kendall and Raanan Meyer performed an improvisational set and were moved by the degree to which they were able connect with the patients through their music.

Travels in Time for Three composer Chris Brubeck will join LexPhil for Take Five on New Year’s Eve, when LexPhil will performs with his high-octane jazz group, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet.

What is your most memorable moment with LexPhil?

Pei-San: November 2013. The most memorable moment was my very first concert. I’ll never forget the solo in [Stravinsky’s] Petrushka − there was absolute silence in the hall expecting for my solo… such a scary, yet wonderful experience in my musical career.

Stephen: January 2013. My most memorable moment was a couple of years ago… we performed Dvor˘ák’s 8th Symphony. In addition to being one of my favorite pieces, I remember that we just played it so well; and we had such a great time.

What drives you to dedicate yourself to being the best musician you can be?

I hope everyone can enjoy the music and love the flute!

Stephen: It’s the only thing I’ve ever really wanted to do. Playing in an orchestra (for the most part) never feels like ‘work’ to me. In addition to my LPO colleagues being fantastic musicians; they are wonderful people. A couple of them are my very best friends, without whom I’d be lost. I have a deep sense of responsibility to the music and to my colleagues, not to mention all of those wonderful people out there in the dark!

Do you have any advice for young aspiring musicians?

Pei-San: To me, this is a life-long learning process and it is such a pleasure being a musician, to convey my idea and emotion to everyone who will listen. I want to share my love of music and passion for flute with people by collaborating with my peers and colleagues, playing for audiences, and teaching students.

Pei-San: Besides the discipline of practicing, you need to remember to think, feel, and enjoy the life! Beyond techniques, your imagination and life experience will make you more than an instrumentalist, but a musician.

Stephen: I would encourage young aspiring musicians to spend a good deal of time listening to recordings and watching live and recorded performances. Also find a teacher who is a fantastic musician and learn as much as possible.

How does a violin produce sound? How many quarter notes are in a whole note? What is a metronome? LexPhil’s crosscurricular Music Builds STEAM programs answer these questions and more, demonstrating how music relates to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

LexPhil presents these popular programs in schools and at community events throughout the year.

Thanks to generous community support, LexPhil will take free Music Builds STEAM programs to eight (8) Title I elementary schools in Fayette and Scott County this year.

STEM + Arts = STEAM!

In addition, it will bring programs to six (6) elementary schools in Breathitt and Magoffin Counties. All in all, these programs will reach over 8,000 students during the 2015-2016 school year!

LexPhil’s Music Builds programs range from ensemble performances for the entire school, to the Instrument Petting Zoo (where students can play up to 20 instruments!) to classroom sessions with LexPhil’s teaching musicians. This season, LexPhil’s teaching musician team includes Clyde Beavers (cello), Rebecca Kiekenapp (cello), Joseph Van Fleet (trumpet), Michael Acord (clarinet), Elizabeth Steva (violin), Elaine Cook (harp) and David Powell (oboe).

A Powerful Partnership!

PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY CONCERTS

In 2012, LexPhil and Kentucky Touchstone Energy Cooperatives (East Kentucky Power Cooperative) established an innovative partnership designed to bring music education programs to underserved elementary schools in rural areas of eastern Kentucky.

This partnership started with a pilot program at Prichard Elementary School in Grayson County, Kentucky. With the support of the local power cooperative, Grayson RECC, LexPhil was able to send an ensemble of teaching musicians to Grayson to perform an interactive Music Tells a Story programs for nearly 300 3rd through 5th graders.

In the fall, an ensemble of LexPhil teaching musicians presents a Music Builds assembly program for the entire school. In the spring, LexPhil returns to the schools with the Instrument Petting Zoo, a collection of up to 20 orchestral instruments for students to play. With the help of local volunteers, LexPhil is able to give students the opportunity to uncover their hidden musical interests and talents!

We are so grateful to the Licking Valley RECC and the Lexington Philharmonic for bringing the Instrument Petting Zoo our school. Our students had a great time trying out all the instruments! It was a valuable experience they otherwise would not have until middle school.

We can’t wait to have LexPhil back in the spring!

Over the last three seasons, this education outreach partnership has grown exponentially! With the generous support of KTEC and its eastern Kentucky subsidiaries, LexPhil has taken free music education programs to over 5,000 students at 14 elementary schools in Breathitt, Floyd, Magoffin, Morgan and Wolfe Counties. Many of these schools have no music curriculum.

Community Engagement & Philanthropy: We have a strong commitment to the Arts. UK HealthCare partners with local arts organizations, such as Lexington Philharmonic, but has also designed its own, unique program, UK Arts in HealthCare. Visual, performing and therapeutic arts have transformed and enriched UK HealthCare’s healing environment – for patients and their families, as well as employees, students and all those who visit the facility.

Dedicated to the health of the people of Kentucky, UK HealthCare is committed to the pillars of academic health care – research, education and clinical care.

On November 12, Dr. Michael and Ellen Karpf were honored for their exemplary service to LexPhil and the larger community at the annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Bluegrass Chapter.

The Karpfs moved to Lexington in 2003, when Michael was recruited as Executive Vice President for Health Affairs for the University of Kentucky. For the last 17 years, Michael has been responsible for all clinical operations across the university hospital, medical center, and practice groups.

Ellen Karpf has dedicated countless volunteer hours to UK HealthCare, including coordinating a Pet Therapy program for patients at the Markey Cancer Center. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky, the Child Advocacy Center of Lexington and the Lexington Philharmonic Society and Foundation. Ellen has dedicated over 10 years of service to LexPhil including serving as Board President from 2009 to 2011.

The Karpfs have brought a powerful vision to our community in many areas of health and the arts, including the intersection of art and healthcare. Our community has benefited dramatically from their leadership and will reap the benefits of their vision for decades to come.

Much like health care, accessibility to art at home is of great benefit to those who live and work in our community. When national and international visitors venture to Lexington, there’s no need to travel to larger, metropolitan areas. Lexingtonians, as well as people from throughout the region, can experience art locally.

LexPhil:

We partner with the Philharmonic because it is an essential part of our community’s quality of life. Through music programming and education, the Philharmonic enriches our community and creates opportunities for us all to grow.

The innovative Garbulinska Performer in Residence Series program, which featured Time for Three this past October, distinguishes Lexington Philharmonic as a dedicated community partner and makes the arts more accessible to people in our community.
