April 3, 2020 Dear Friends and Families of St. John, Welcome to the auction, the annual gala event that keeps on supporting and improving our school. This year’s theme song, Be Kind, can be adapted for tonight, Be True, Be True, Be True to your School! And yes, Be Kind! On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of St. John, I thank you. Your presence here tonight demonstrates your faith in our mission and your school spirit. Your donations, your purchases and your support highlight that you want your children to be taught by an excellent faculty, to experience programs that encourage them to reach their potential, to be safe and to have the latest technology. Last year, was a record breaker! Tonight, I challenge you to break that record! Raise those bids! Help us, please, to finish those windows for once and for all! Change the panes and make us sane! Thank you to our incredible auction team. I am so grateful for the huge commitment of time, talent, creativity and hard work that these people invest in St John. Thank you to Andrea Marquez, St. John Fundraising Administrator, and Lauren Exnicios and Kristen Capka, Auction Co-Chairs, for your leadership. Thank you, procurement team, liaisons and art volunteers, for working with your children’s classes to find and create unique experiences and art on which we will shortly bid. And thanks to all of you who donated items and many hours of service to make this night so successful. I also appreciate our donors and our sponsors for this evening, including our Class President level sponsor, First Federal. Be true to your School! Show your spirit! Sincerely,

Bernadette O’Leary, Principal

April 3, 2020 Jambo! It’s time again to celebrate and savor the company of good friends at St. John’s annual school Auction, “Be True to Your School”. This year, the gala dinner and live auction will take place on Friday, April 3rd at Fremont Studios. This is an evening for adults only; there will be an online auction the week leading up to the Live event. St. John School provides an outstanding education within a loving, supportive and generous community. Our angels grow into active members of the Church and society. This task requires the entire parish’s support and the Auction is a great opportunity to help our school. Every year with your generous commitment, you make this miracle happen: an excellent education that is accessible to everyone. Asante sana for making this year’s Auction possible through sharing your time, talent and treasure. Our annual celebration would not happen without the continuous substantial support of businesses, individuals, parishioners, and school families. From all in our St. John’s family, please accept our gratitude for your participation at the “Be True to Your School” St. John Auction. Come join in the fun and see just how BIG our Auction has become; take in every exciting opportunity available to make a real contribution to our St. John community. To our many, many volunteers who have worked so many hours to create an unforgettable Auction evening: I pray that you slow down and really see and enjoy the fruits of your labor. ASANTE SANA!

Fr. Crispin Okoth, Pastor

2020 Fund-A-Need St. John School is approaching its 100th Anniversary in 2022. While significant upgrades to the campus facilities have been accomplished, there are still original windows in parts of the main school building. When the school was originally built, rope and pulley, single pane, wooden-frame windows were standard construction. As anyone who owns a home understands windows don’t last forever. The 90+-year-old wooden frames on the original windows have deteriorated inside and out; the wood has splintered, creating drafts in many of the rooms. Temporary, plastic substitutes have been installed over broken window panes through the years. With improvements in materials and energy efficiency, it is time to finish the window project and heal the pane! The 2019 Fund-a-Need was a record year, with over $145,000 in donations toward a new fire notification system and student computers. The school is generously asking you to raise your bid cards for this year’s Fund-A-Need: Replacement of original school windows on the north side of the main building. This multi-year initiative, starting in 2006, to replace all school windows can be completed with your help. Our targeted total at this year’s auction is $100,000. Money donated from the 2020 Fund-a-Need will be combined with an existing window budget reserve to complete the projected $400,000+ installation. With your help this project can begin June 15, 2020, with estimated completion in time for the first day of school in September. Thank you for your generosity and for Being True to Our School.

Get ready to raise your bid cards! Corporate matching may apply. Consult your employee benefits office for more information about matching your gift.

Group Bid Opportunities Plan ahead and organize a group to bid as “one” on the parties and experiences in this year’s auction. When you bid as a group, one member of your group bids, then each participant will be charged his or her portion of the total amount bid for the item. Each bidder will receive a statement for tax purposes. Some of the fun group bid opportunities include:

906 “Redouté Still Life” Thank you: Mrs. Jessup’s 1st Grade Class Value: Floral Keepsake

French artists Matisse and Redouté shared a love of color and a rich respect for the tradition of still-life painting. One gave us lush compositions packed with florals and another dense patterns and flattened perspectives. Ms. Jessup’s 1st grade class imagined what might happen if these two artists created work together. Students constructed hand-painted paper flowers in a Matisse-like style, then arranged in a Redouté-like fashion, resulting in a contemporary take on a timeless tradition.

Pages from forgotten classics have been repurposed to create a retro Seattle cityscape complete with famous buildings, landmarks, and our St. John Parish School.

910 “Marine Life” Thank you: Mrs. Edwards’ 3rd Grade Class Value: Watercolor Wonderland

25 endangered marine species native to the Puget Sound - from a long timer to the endangered list, the sea otter, to a recent addition, the pinto abalone - beautifully sketched and watercolor painted by Mrs. Edwards’ 3rd grade class. During the creative process, not only did the students learn about the principles of art and design and art history, but were also reminded of human activities that affect the extinction of species. Inspired by the artist, Charley Harper, all species were intentionally made the same size to emphasize their equal significance in the world.

915 “The Darling Buds of May Shadowbox” Thank you: Ms. Kelley’s 5th Grade Class Value: Your Darling Buds

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date... Inspired by Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 and the art of Anne Ten Donkelaar, Mrs. Kelley’s 5th grade class took a springtime walk around the St. John neighborhood, and entered the whimsical fairy realm of flowers and sunshine presented in this stunning shadowbox. Each pressed flower or photograph was collected in May, 2019 within a four-block radius of our school. The students meticulously cut out the blossoms and posed for this delightful collage that reminds us of the impermanence of youth and the eternal beauty of nostalgia. Imagine your little eleven-year-old gazing at this box on your wall when they are 25, 35, or 50. For surely, “...thy eternal summer shall not fade, nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st... So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.”
