Winter 2019 Athletic Program As I begin my first year as President of Lexington Catholic High School, it is my privilege to be part of many distinguished programs at our school. We have much to be proud of as we nurture the mind, spirit, and body of each student and highlight the commitment each student makes as they participate in the robust extra-curricular programs. The commitment the student-athletes make to their teammates and the school is prime example. The coaching staff and student-athletes represent our school with integrity, sportsmanship, athletic success, and a winning tradition that is the standard for sustained competitive excellence in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I invite you to join me, my family, and the Lexington Catholic community as we enjoy what will be an outstanding 2019-2020 season of Lexington Catholic athletics. I will keep all of the players and coaches in my prayers for a healthy, successful season. Sandra R. Young President

Archery History Team History

Four years ago, Haley Zuniga thought it would be a great idea to start an archery team at the school. She got this drive and energy after becoming a fan of the Hunger Games film series and practicing archery in her back yard. Haley sought out like-minded revolutionaries and then turned to her father with typical little princess “pleeeeeeease?” pleadings to be the sponsor and help find a coach. Gerry Zuniga decided to become the full-time coach and obtained the necessary certification that would eventually lead to the school attending tournaments. In the team’s first year, eighteen archers joined the team. Each year it has steadily grown, and, this year it has its largest membership yet: forty-five members! Two years ago, the Archery Team had their first All-City Qualifier in Jonathan Willcutt (Senoir). Last year, the team had its first State Qualifier in Katie Fightmaster (Sophomore). The team is totally self-funded and has been making steady enhancements to its system every year. Last year the team held its Archery Banquet at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, Home of the Lexington Legends! We look forward to being an integral sport at LC and continue to foster and grow many young archers!

Archery Head Coach Head Coach Gerry Zuniga Gerry Zuniga has been the head coach for the Archery Team since its first day. He has been a teacher at Lexington Catholic for 23 years and thoroughly enjoys connecting with the archery team every day. He and his wife Jill still support Haley, their daughter, who is in her second year at Transylvania University. His burning desire isn’t so much in seeking trophies, but the improvement in character among the team. The team seems to have plenty of that! He is most proud of the parents who have stepped up to help him in the operations of the team. Without their help he believes that the team would not exist. LC Archery Team Certified Assistant Coaches: Phil Blandford, David Dome, M.D., Jane Dome, Jason Razor, Joan Scales, Mike Scales, Chris Sutton

Sophomore year is probably going to be your peak because after that you have all the skill you’ll ever have, but high school will now be really kicking in and killing you slowly from the inside.

Just because you have some trouble with shooting, don’t just decide to switch bow hands, it’s a lot less effective than just practicing the hand you’re already good at.

Shooting straight doesn’t necessarily help if you’re tall or not lined up with the target.

Coaching Staff John Mahanes

Assistant Coach & Junior Varsity Head Coach This upcoming season will make my 4th year with the Lexington Catholic Girls Basketball Program. I am very proud to work with our School, Coaching Staff, Parents, and Players at Lexington Catholic. My passions of the game are basketball offensive strategy, the details of shooting technique, and enjoying the relationships made among our program. I feel very blessed to be a part of such a historic program rich in tradition. My responsibilities have included: Assistant Freshmen Coach, Head Freshmen Coach, Middle School 6th & 7th Grade Coach, and this year Junior Varsity Coach. I have been a student of the game for most of my 51 years and want to instill a passion and drive in our players that will aid them in whatever career they choose. I am employed outside of school by the J.M. Smucker Company making Jif Peanut Butter. I graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1990. Go Knights!!
