PRESIDENT’S PODIUM Dear friends, Welcome to the fall edition of the Foundation forum. Since my first President’s Podium message to you one year ago, there have been many changes due to the pandemic. One thing that has not changed is the work of the Foundation. You will know within the following pages the tremendous effort of your Foundation staff, board members and other community leaders efforts in organizing Coronavirus relief to our community. These relief funds have been a tremendous help to our community that would not have happened without your Foundation taking the lead on this. You will also note that this fall like all of the falls is a busy time for your Foundation. On November 12, Give Big Lexington will enjoy its 10th year anniversary and is expanding to include partner campaigns for the nearby communities of Elwood, Cozad, and Overton. This expansion will benefit the smaller communities and help defray some operational costs for the Foundation. The following pages recognize the 2020 scholarship recipients recognized through the hard work of the Foundation Scholarship Committee. Many pages of memorials are also noted. As always, thank you for your generous donations to the Foundation as a way of recognizing lost loved ones. You may recall from my last message I set forth

my goal as chair of the development committee to develop a program that encourages and, acknowledges giving as part of an individuals estate plan as a way to provide a permanent source of funding for opportunities to improve the quality of life, strengthen the sense of community and benefit future generations here in Lexington. I am proud to announce that through the hard work of the development committee, a planned giving society program is being finalized. This program will allow community members to invest in the future of Lexington through planned giving. Certainly, if you have questions or want more information on this program, you can contact me, any board member or the Foundation office for more information. I will sign off by giving thanks to long time outgoing board members Tempie Roberts and Dean Brand. A big thank you to them for their years of service. I will also like to welcome new board members Sarah De La Torre and Birgitte Hays. Also, a huge thank you goes out to Steve Heldt for his work as the Foundation treasurer over the past 2 years and a further welcome to Larry Reynolds as incoming treasurer. LCF PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY ENDOWMENTS ARE FOREVER Lexington Community Foundation (LCF) is engaging in a campaign to increase the funds it has available to fulfill it’s mission. Such funds are identified as “unrestricted endowed” assets and can be used and distributed at the discretion of LCF. A successful campaign will provide a permanent source of funding for opportunities to improve the quality of life, strengthen the sense of community and benefit future generations in the Lexington community. In order to ensure the availability of sufficient resources in the future, the Foundation has created the LCF Planned Giving Society. Made up of likeminded individuals, Society member’s generous gifts will provide the resources to assist LCF in it’s mission to address the future needs and provide for opportunities as they develop in the Lexington community. There are many methods of giving to the Foundation. Each person’s finances are unique and therefore a planned gift will be what is best suited for your financial situation. Below are different gift options that are available. •
Current Gift. A gift at this time to LCF of cash, securities, real estate, required IRA minimum distribution or other assets.
•
Bequests (wills or grantor trusts). This is the
most common method of making a planned gift. Such bequests may take the form of a specific bequest, such as “I give to Lexington Community Foundation the sum of $_____” or “I give to Lexington Community Foundation all my interest in and to (described property)” or it may take the form of giving all or a percentage amount of your estate, such as “I give Lexington Community Foundation ______% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.” • Life insurance. This is also a relatively easy type of gift for donors who are new to endowed philanthropy. Naming Lexington Community Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy is easily accomplished. • IRA, retirement plan or annuity beneficiary designations. These gifts, have become more popular in recent years. Naming LCF as the beneficiary of an IRA, annuity or retirement plan can be accomplished without difficulty. • Trusts. Gifts such as Charitable Lead Trusts or Charitable Remainder Trusts are more complicated gifts to transact, as they require the participation of the donor’s financial professional and attorney and often are established by donors with greater wealth.
Planned giving allows donors to invest in the future of the community they love. Contact the Foundation with any questions about how we can help you strategically accomplish your charitable objectives. LCF’s staff, board, and investment advisors are determined to see our endowments continue serving Lexington for a really long time…. Make that forever.

LCF BOARD CHANGES REYNOLDS ACCEPTS TREASURER POSITION At the annual meeting of the Board of Directors in July, STEVE HELDT stepped away from the position of Treasurer after serving in that capacity for four years. Steve will continue to serve on the Executive Committee as chair of the Development Committee. Steve will also continue to serve as a member of the Finance and Investment Committee. LARRY REYNOLDS has been a member of the LCF Finance and Investment Committee for 11 years and has served as the chair of that committee for the past year. He has taken on the title of Secretary/Treasurer for the Foundation as of August 1, 2020.
LCF WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBERS The LCF Board of Directors accepted the Board Development Committee nominations of BIRGITTE HAYS and SARAH DELATORRE to fill the seats vacated by retiring members, DEAN BRAND and TEMPIE ROBERTS at the annual meeting in July. Both will serve 4-year terms on the Board. BIRGITTE was born and raised in Lexington with her three siblings and parents Mogens and Sally Knudsen. Birgitte left Lexington for some time and spent a few years living in San Diego with her now husband, Carl Hays while he was in the Navy. They moved back to Omaha and then made their journey back to Lexington to raise their family and be a part of the family business at Plum Creek Market. Birgitte loves spending time outside with Carl and their two children Eli & Ida, doing boot camp at the YMCA and sharing her passion for Scentsy. She spearheaded the Splash Pad campaign and looks forward to adding her own splash of promoting and contributing to the wonderful Lexington community! SARAH was also born and raised in Lexington, graduating from LHS in 2006. She returned to Lexington in 2010 after receiving a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from UNK and married Oscar in 2011. Sarah and Oscar, Sales Manager at Heartland Chevrolet Buick, have one daughter, Evelina. Sarah has worked for Edward Jones since 2015 where she is the Senior Branch Office Administrator. In addition to the Foundation, Sarah serves on the Orthman Community YMCA Board, Lexington Teammates Mentoring Board, is an Officer in PEO Chapter FS, and is active in the Presbyterian Church. Sarah has had a lifelong love for Lexington and is excited to work with the Foundation on bringing more opportunities to the Lexington community.
Thanks is expressed to Dean Brand and Tempie Roberts who collectively served 20 years on the Foundation board. LCF appreciates your willingness serve and has valued your time and your input. Thank you! You both have been so positive for Lexington. Help us in welcoming Brigitte Hays and Sarah DeLaTorre and in thanking Dean Brand and Tempie Roberts for the time they have served the Foundation.

COVID RESPONSE
COLLECTIVE IMPACT Lexington Community Foundation is working with multiple players in the impact network– government, business, public health, nonprofits, philanthropy, and community stakeholders - to collaborate in a structured way to address the immediate and emerging needs of our community’s most vulnerable residents, providing grants from hardship relief to filling the hunger gap by addressing unmet food needs. Since the start of this pandemic, the total value of COVID response efforts in Lexington exceeds $750,000 across all funds. This collective impact is possible because of the partnerships LCF has formed with the companies and organizations listed below, and the numerous hours volunteers have given for set up and distributions.

GIVE BIG LEXINGTON
LCF will host the 10th annual Give BIG Lexington on November 12, 2020 at the Dawson County Annex Building. Since 2011, Give BIG has had a significant impact on the Lexington area community. The Foundation is thankful for the support the Lexington community has shown local nonprofits over the last ten years. Because of the generosity of donors, over $4M has been disbursed to local non-profits who are working to make our community a great place to live. LCF is encouraging the community of Lexington to Be the Change. “It’s one thing to see what needs to change; it’s another to make change happen.” The Foundation is hoping to inspire the community to not just wait for change to happen, but to be part of it. This year over 80 organizations will be participating in GBL. Your generosity helps these local organizations make a difference here. Whether it’s a small or large donation, every dollar counts. In honor of 10 years of giving, the Foundation will be drawing special golden tickets at 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. The winner of those Golden Tickets will have their donation multiplied by TEN!

Be part of something BIGGER! Give BIG Lexington to Include Partner Campaigns Lexington Community Foundation is excited to announce that this year other Dawson County area communities are participating in Give BIG! We are including these outlying areas in an effort to help other communities be part of something bigger. Give BIG is about inclusion and increasing awareness for the work non-profits do. Including partner campaigns is a great way to do this.

You can find their giving day pages by going to givebiglexington.org and clicking on their giving day icon on the GBL homepage. Each community has a list of their local organizations. Search their causes by scrolling through their leaderboards at the top of their homepage. Watch for more information about the locations of the giving day headquarters in each of these communities. We’re making it easy for donors to donate.

KEY 2020 HIGHLIGHTS
LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION hosted the 19th annual Key event on April 25, 2020. This year’s Key looked a little different as the event went fully virtual. The community was encouraged to make the most of the situation by having their own Key event with their families at home. Although it was not the Key that the community is used to, the event was still a success. There was increased participation this year with the highest number of registered bidders the Key has ever had. Also, there were several new local businesses that featured items on the auction, along with new exciting offerings from longtime supporters. Thank you to all the area businesses and individuals who continue to support the Key. Your dedication to the Lexington community is greatly appreciated. Thousands of people are directly impacted by your continued generosity.

Back-to-School Brigade® is Operation Homefront's annual nationwide school supply collection and distribution campaign. Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree Inc. have joined forces for 12 consecutive years to collect and distribute school supplies for (military) children.
This year the students at Sandoz Elementary get to use the school supplies collected from our Lexington Dollar Tree store. Pictured on the right is Sandoz Principal, Barry McFarland, picking up the boxes of school supplies from the Foundation. LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION is pleased to serve as Lexington’s Operation Homefront volunteer agency.
