PRESIDENT’S PODIUM Welcome to the State of the Community Address, otherwise known as the Foundation Forum. As always, Jackie and Michaela have done a great job of putting the forum together to keep us up to date on LCF happenings. As evidenced by the following pages, the generosity of your community continues to amaze. Your Foundation and the benevolence of your community is unmatched. The recent LCF office renovation and Give Big Lexington resulting in the disbursement of over $500,000 to 80 local non-profits speak for themselves.

Case in point, I was in a recent meeting with John McCoy, CEO of Orthman Manufacturing. John shared that he was recently in a business meeting with out of town business guests who mentioned that they had noticed the Orthman company name on a Lexington facility and wondered how that came about. John relayed to them that it was the YMCA and proudly told them how Lexington is the most giving community that he not only has been a part of but that he is

aware of anywhere. John communicated that donating to the YMCA was his way of being a part of the philanthropic mindset of the community.

As chair of the Development Committee of the LCF Board, we continue to search for ways to make sure your Foundation continues to thrive and grow for future generations. One way to try to meet this goal is to develop a program that encourages and acknowledges giving as part of an individuals estate plan. My goal is to have such a program in place before the next Foundation Forum. Stay tuned for details.

Springtime brings the next opportunity for community comradery and giving with the KEY event slated for April 25th. For those unable to attend, all are welcome to preview night on April 24th. You can also sign up to bid online.

DONOR PROFILE THE GIFT WITH NO NAME The story of the anonymous donor.

Anonymous donors. They come from all walks of life, from varying economic brackets and social settings. They believe in giving, in helping their fellow humanity. Their donations may be thousands of dollars - or a sack of groceries. In addition to a belief in doing charity, they have another thing in common: They wish to remain anonymous.

There is a rapid growth of both the number and dollar amount of anonymous and private giving to nonprofits, including the L EXINGTON COMMUNITY F OUNDATION. Anonymous donations are given with the condition that the identity of the donor or donors remain unknown and that the recipients make no attempt to discover the source of the gifts.

This past year, LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, was the recipient of 54 anonymous gifts, from 29 donors totaling $93,587 and benefitting 32 causes. That is a considerable amount with tremendous impact!

Donors who choose to give gifts anonymously do so for their own reasons.

The motivation could simply be that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Others may give anonymously because they prefer not to be publicly acknowledged. Whatever their reason, LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION respects their wishes and is grateful of their decision to give to support our work and our community. In the words of one anonymous donor, “My gifting is given graciously & nothing gives me more joy than seeing things continue to come together in our community.”

We usually profile specific gifts in our “Donor Profile” page of the Foundation Forum to illustrate the many ways of giving. One of the great tools of organized public philanthropy is the example of others, the inspiration to give. Gifts given anonymously are just another example for those who are not motivated by recognition but simply want to make a difference. It’s another way to give.

TREASURER’S NOTES A message from LCF Finance Committee Chair and Treasurer, Steve Heldt What is the role of the Treasurer of the Lexington Community Foundation?

The Treasurer is responsible for the formulation of an annual LCF operating budget and for the investing of LCF and affiliated funds assets.

The two main duties are accomplished with the input and approval of the Finance and Investment Committee of the LCF. Each January the Committee recommends to the Board of Directors an operating budget for the calendar year, taking into consideration expected revenues from multiple sources, including the KEY, donations and memorials, fee income derived from Affiliated Funds and return on investments and expected expenses including the cost of operating, grants, Give BIG matching dollars and costs, and the expenses of the KEY event. I can assure you that there are no frills or unnecessary expenditures in the annual operating budget. The budget is tight and relies on a modest return on the LCF investments to balance.

Currently, the LCF’s investment portfolio has a fair market value of approximately $4,000,000, of which ½ represents LCF endowed money and ½ represents the investment of monies belonging to Affiliated Funds. The Committee has historically taken a long-term view of investing in an attempt to maximize return over an extended period of time. We do not pick stocks or try to time the market, rather nearly 100% of the portfolio consists of mutual funds which are professionally managed and represent segments of possible areas of investment. Three or four years ago the LCF Board of Directors adopted a methodology or formula for calculating the distribution of investment gains in “good” years and investment loss in “bad” years.

What is the future of the LCF’s impact on the Lexington community?

The answer to this question will most probably depend on whether the size of the LCF endowment can be increased. A larger endowment can only be created by donations and gifts made during a donor’s lifetime or legacy gifts at death. The possibility of having funds available for new and unique projects that may come about in the future and having a larger investment gain in “good” years would enhance the LCF’s ability to continue to impact our community in a meaningful way. An effort to grow the LCF endowment will be forthcoming in the near future.

GRANT FOCUS Pershing Elementary recently received a grant from LCF to bring author and illustrator Bruce Arant to work with students.

Arrant, a native of Omaha and University of Nebraska graduate, is a talented and enthusiastic artist who provides an exciting way for students to learn about creative writing and illustration.

Arant has always had a passion for drawing and is self-taught in a variety of mediums. His work is able to capture the emotion of the moment and tells a story without using words. The teachers at Pershing felt it was important to expose students to experts in fields of study outside the basic academic areas.

LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION is pleased to have provided the grant funding to bring Mr. Arant to Pershing Elementary School for a full day of workshops. The student had the opportunity to work hands-on with Mr. Arant to improve their writing skills and creativity in a fun learning environment. The experience was one that will be memorable for students. It’s another great example of LCF being a partner in education!

Destination Graduation is an initiative through the Lexington High School that is designed to keep high school students involved, develop responsibility and encourage academic achievement. Through this program graduation rates and daily attendance have increased. The mutual accountability of Destination Graduation involves every student at any level and every staff member.

Their mantra continues to be“Teachers will never give up on students and students will never

give up on themselves or each other”.

LCF is proud to have partnered with LHS on this successful initiative.

Since Destination Graduation began in 2011, LCF has granted more than $200,000 to Destination Graduation.

Throughout the last several years, the program has put Lexington in the local and national spotlight for it’s achievements. The success of Destination Graduation is a testament to the collaborative work being done by the schools and the Lexington community.

The Lexington Community Foundation offers multiple grant opportunities to local non-profits. This financial assistance is for programs and projects that will enhance the quality of life for all residents of the community and surrounding area. For more grant information, visit our website at -

LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION has been using a paper-based scholarship program since its first award in 1988. As the Foundation’s scholarship programs grew in size, number and scope, so did the shortcomings associated with paper applications. In September 2019, LHS and LCF entered into a collaborative agreement with Blackbaud Award Management to implement the AcademicWorks platform that would move the entire scholarship process to an online application, review and selection process. The online scholarship site went live in February.

Students now go to one website to apply for all scholarships. The applicant selects whether they are a high school senior, current college student, or nontraditional student. This selection prompts additional relevant application questions. Then the system automatically matches them to all the scholarships for which they qualify. The integrated program will help us communicate better with students, scholarship donors, selection committees – even those providing references.

“We are excited and appreciate the partnership with Lexington Public Schools as we move forward with the implementation of Blackbaud Scholarship Management Program! The efficiency, effectiveness, and simplicity of the program will be a "winwin" situation for all individuals involved in the scholarship process. We are excited to be one of the first high schools across the nation to utilize this program!” says Audrey Downey, LCF Scholarship Committee Chair and Vice Principal of LHS. To apply for scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year, students will need to create a login at our scholarship site: https://lexschools.academicworks.com.

Scholarship opportunities exist for current and former LHS students pursuing an education at any level. Application deadline is April 1, 2020.

OFFICE RENOVATION PROJECT COMPLETION Lexington Community Foundation is excited to announce the office renovation project is complete and we are back in our original location on Washington Street, in downtown Lexington. In early December, the Foundation hosted a donor reception and open house for the public. Both donors and Foundation patrons were surprised and pleased with the dramatic transformation.

The renovated space includes more work areas, increased storage space, more natural light and better use of space and increased energy efficiencies.

The LCF office also has a conference area where we are able to host executive committee and standing committee meetings. It also offers a larger, more private space to meet with families and affiliate funds.

The conference room will also be equipped with teleconferencing capabilities allowing staff to participate in regional conferences, webinars and trainings. Along with the interior modifications, the Foundation’s exterior also received improvements including paint, a new door and an additional window.

LCF Conference Room LCF would like to thank donors and On Point Construction Management for making this project possible. The continued support LCF receives is truly appreciated. This much needed renovation allows for the Foundation to continue serving Lexington well for years to come. If you have yet to see the new space, stop by and visit us at 607 N Washington!

PROJECT UPDATES Lexington Public Schools are looking to increase the access of their playgrounds for students with special needs at Morton and Sandoz Elementary Schools. The equipment will be more inclusive for all elementary students.

The school district’s Special Education Department is currently applying for several grants to help with the funding. The project has already received the Sara Rickertsen Special Needs Grant from the LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Inspired by Sara, an intellectually disabled adult, the family’s wish is to help others with disabilities live fulfilling lives.

LEXINGTON COMMUNITY F OUNDATION has also supported this project with a match grant that was announced during Give BIG Lexington in November. The playgrounds are expected to be completed in the summer of 2020.

The Splash Pad Project hopes to provide a safe, fun environment for children of all ages in Lexington. This community-led project, was proposed by young mom and Lexington native, Birgitte Hays. Her vision is to have an additional water activity for kids during the summer months that is at no cost to families. She will be working alongside the City of Lexington and the FOUNDATION on this collaborative effort to bring a SPLASH to Oak Park.

Oak Park, on the south side of town, was chosen for the project because it does not feature as many play equipment options compared to other parks in Lexington. Not only will this be a fun summer activity, but with the help from the City of Lexington, Possible water features the park will include landscaping that will benefit from excess water run off which will enhance the park’s beauty.

Fundraising for the project is underway with a goal of $100,000. The LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION awarded the Splash Pad Project a match grant, given during Give BIG in an effort to jumpstart giving. Match grants allow donors to give and have their donations matched dollar for dollar. Keep up with the Splash Pad Possible water features progress by joining their Facebook group -

PROJECT UPDATES In Dawson County, Lexington is the only community that does not have a public acknowledgement of veterans. The Lexington Veteran Pavilion hopes to give back to the community while recognizing those who served and sacrificed for our country.

Artist Rendering This project at Kirkpatrick Memorial Park will feature an open-air amphitheater which will be open to public and can be used for concerts, acting performances and other large events. Veterans will be honored with an education walk surrounding the pavilion. Each of the five military services will be represented with a statue at a monument on each corner of the space. Each monument will feature a QR code with several educational facts about each service and its history.

The target timeline is to have this Artist Rendering project open to the public in 2022. On their Facebook page the committee reported that dirt work is already being done at the location and fundraising has started and there will be a formal campaign coming soon. The Lexington Veteran Pavilion was awarded a grant in December from the LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION for their efforts. EVENT NEWS LEXINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION will hold the 19th annual Key Dinner and Auction on Saturday, April 25, 2020 with a Preview Night Social open to the public on Friday, April 24, 2020.

LCF is excited to be featuring new local businesses on the auction and new exciting offerings from longtime supporters this year. Natives of Lexington who have since moved away are also choosing to support the Key and the community they call home. Drew Price, Ashley Trampe, Kathleen Seberger Ostrom, Lori Linn Romatzke are just a few who have chosen to offer packages this year.

Thank you to all the area businesses and individuals who continue to support the Key event. LCF is fortunate to have people who are willing to donate auction items and to help us come up with new packages.

GIVE BIG LEXINGTON

Give BIG Lexington 2019 “A GREAT community is all about GREAT people.”

The Lexington Community Foundation hosted the 9th annual Give BIG Lexington on November 14, 2019. The success of this event is a reflection of the GREAT generosity in our community. Including matching funds, prizes and late donations, over $500,000 was distributed to 80 local non-profits.

Since 2011, more than four million dollars has been disbursed to the Lexington community. This annual giving event greatly impacts the community and helps the non-profits who make the Lexington area a great place to live.

The theme for this year’s giving day was “What Makes Lexington Great”. Each organization and several community members offered their opinions on what they thought made our community great.

From the support local non-profits feel, to the diversity and uniqueness of the community, the positive feedback LCF received from patrons and community members was tremendous.

YOU make Lexington GREAT! The 10th annual Give BIG Lexington will be held on November 12, 2020.

Late Donation A late Give BIG donation of $30,000 was received from Mickey Hundley at Christmas benefitting ten organizations.

This generous gift put GBL totals over $500,000.

Mickey, a former Johnson Lake resident, has been a long time supporter of the Foundation. Even though she has moved from Lexington, she continues to support the area she calls home.
