PRESIDENT’S PODIUM
Dear Foundation Friends,
It is my honor and privilege to serve as the LCF President. I am both humbled and thankful to be in this leadership role for the next two years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our past President, Barry McFarland, for his guidance and a job well done. It is also important for me to recognize and thank Jackie Berke. I believe I speak on behalf of our entire organization when I say, “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our former Executive Director.” Under her direction, the Foundation has grown beyond where any of us could have imagined!
LCF is in good hands with our new Director, Beth Roberts. I look forward to working with Beth , Christy and the Board , continuing to discover ways to make a tremendous impact on our community. I would also like to recognize and thank our outgoing Board members, Kim Booth for serving on the Events Committee, and Steve Heldt for his service to the Finance Committee and newly created Development Committee. A big welcome to our newest Board members, Jake Saulsbury and Manuel Andazola. It is always exciting to have new faces and ideas coming to the Foundation!
As fall approaches, I want to remind you to save the date, November 9, 2023, for Give BIG Lexington. This is a very special event that allows each and every one of us to help our favorite nonprofits and continue enhancing our already wonderful place to live.

Growing up in Lexington, raising my family here, owning a business in this community, and watching my grandkids grow and learn in my hometown, is nothing short of a dream. I am very proud of Lexington in so many ways. I love the way our community members embrace responsibilities to accomplish projects put in front of them. For example, the Veterans Pavilion and Racquet Center, two of Lexington’s newest projects, were fully funded is less than one year, and will be enjoyed by many for years to come.
One last thank you to the numerous businesses, donors, and volunteers who help make Lexington the thriving community it is. Let’s continue to take care of each other.

“I have really enjoyed working with the other members and have learned so much about the Foundation and its broad scope of giving in the Lexington community. Thank you for the opportunity to contribute to such an incredible organization and I look forward to hearing about its continued success.”

Steve served on the Board of Directors from 19951997, as advisory council from 2001 -2015, and rejoined the Board in 2015 until June of 2023. Steve will continue to serve as an advisory member of the Finance Committee.

“Steve has a knack for numbers and has devoted his time and talent to making sure the financial records of LCF are in proper order. He has been generous with both his time and support of LCF and will be sorely missed.” - Tod
McKeoneThank you, Kim and Steve, for your combined years of service. You both have made significant impacts on the Foundation and we will miss you.
Welcome New Board Members: Manuel Andazola & Jake Saulsbury
Manuel Andazola is a 4th grade teacher at Bryan Elementary School. He was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, but grew up in Grand Island. Manuel and his wife, Karla, have three children and reside in Lexington. His favorite thing about teaching is having the opportunity to impact the little lives of future citizens in our community. He believes the African proverb that “it takes a village to raise a child” and looks forward to taking part in serving the Lexington community.
Jake Saulsbury was born and raised in Lexington. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State University and coached tennis at UNK for a number of years before returning to Lexington. He currently works for the City of Lexington as the Parks and Recreation Manager. Jake and his wife, Ashley, have four children and an adorable puppy.

Hixson Athlete Assistance Fund Permanently Established

In 1966, under the leadership of Coach Lefty Hixson, LHS won the State Championship in Cross -Country. Their score remains the second-best Nebraska team score in history and top five in school history. Further, four runners from that team would go on to record two individual cross -country state titles and five individual state track titles. Per the team, “ This would simply not have been accomplished without Coach Hixson.”
In 2013, the 45th anniversary of their achievement, the cross-country team members established the “ Lefty Hixson Athletic Assistance Fund,” which is used to purchase shoes and equipment for LHS cross-country and track athletes to enable them to compete. With Coach Hixson’s passing on
January 18, 2023, the Hixson family continued what the 1966 crosscountry team started by endowing the Fund for cross-country and track team members.

LCF is honored to hold the Hixson Athletic Assistance Fund and values our relationship with the 1966 crosscountry team and the Hixson family. Coach Hixson will be missed, but his legacy will live on through LHS athletes.

With love for the Lexington community, Mark & Patty Jones joined LCF Development Committee members and staff to express their reasons behind leaving a planned gift to the Foundation. Mark remembered raising their four children near Kirkpatrick Memorial Park. Jones’ close friend, Gary Shultz, introduced them to the Thanks a Million campaign to build a new pool. “If Gary can give, we can too.” The Joneses were officially connected to the Lexington Community Foundation.
Mark’s parents, Lloyd and Leona Jones, paved the way to charitable giving throughout his upbringing. They gave monetarily yet also sought to bring opportunities to Lexington. In 1993, Leona assisted in bringing the HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) program to Lexington Public Schools after volunteering with the program while spending winters in Texas. “My mom became aware of the program and knew it would help Lex kids,” Mark explained. Beyond HOSTS mentoring, Mark and Patty gave their time to the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, Adult ESL, Meals on Wheels, and Friends of the Library. Mark sought to improve Lexington Public Schools by serving as a Board member for 16 years. The conversation generated feelings of pride in the number of lives touched by programs in Lexington. “This place is unlike any other. They say it takes a village… the schools, teachers, coaches, churches, and community strengthened our family in many ways. This is our way to give back.”
Mark & Patty currently live in Lincoln, Nebraska, and stay busy with volunteering, community organizations, and their church. Mark donates his time and medical expertise to the Claim of the Heart free clinic. His dedication has not waivered and he continues to give back where he can. Patty keeps herself busy with her lasting involvement in PEO, leading her local chapter as President. They do not miss a minute with their four children and 12 incredible grandchildren. The couple shared how people may “get sick of hearing us talk about Lexington,” but they will not stop sharing the good Lexington offers and the blessings it has provided their family. “Lexington has been so good to us.”

If you would like to support Lexington Community Foundation by arranging a planned gift or if you have already made a future gift intention in your will, through a beneficiary designation or with a life income arrangement, contact Tod McKeone, LCF Development Committee Chair, or Beth Roberts, LCF Executive Director at (308)324 -6704 or director@lexfoundation.org

PROJECT UPDATES

The Johnson Lake Playground was completed in the spring of 2023. It has since been a place where children and families have made memories throughout the lake season. The committee is seeking additional funding to add a water source during Give BIG Lexington.

Johnson Lake Trails have received an upgrade with the Johnson Lake Pollinator Garden. The project includes adding over 120 plants in 15 different varieties covering about 1,000 square foot. The committee will be adding a second phase in the spring of 2024.

The Lexington Veterans Pavilion is nearing completion. The Pavilion will honor our veterans and provide additional community space within the amphitheater.

A groundbreaking project has begun on the Lexington Racquet Center at Plum Creek Park. The center will add four indoor racquet courts that will be open to the public.
Anticipated completion is in the spring of 2024.

The Impact of Giving Back ...Giving to the Community We Love

Community spirit is alive in the Lexington area. A friendly wave to teachers ushering students into school buildings. Neighbors sharing highlights of last night’s big game at the post office. Exploring diverse cuisine from around the world within a five mile radius. Sharing stories of coming home, coming back to the town that built our character. Yes, pride for the community runs through the people of Lexington. This pride inspires hundreds of donors each year to give to local causes. There are countless stories of giving back and many more yet to be shared.
Why is giving back in Lexington important to you?

When choosing to give their earnings to meaningful causes, local donors value the impact their donation has on the area. When asked, donors stated that lives impacted and building a community together were most important to contributing back to the community. “Together we make a difference,” stated one local donor.

How has giving back locally impacted your family, work, and life?
Donors within Lexington span several generations and give for countless reasons, yet the impact of giving has numerous common threads. “I want to give back to what has been given to me,” is a reoccurring message among area donors. The older generations set an example of leadership, while the Gen Z and Millennials are stepping in, using not only monetary donations but active volunteerism to support causes they are passionate about. 85% of US donors volunteer, and 81% attend nonprofit fundraising events (Double the Donation, 2023). In Lexington, one donor says it best, “I feel like I have some skin in the game. I don’t just live in my community, I am a part of my community.”
GIVING OPTION - MATCHING GIFTS
Are You Maximizing Your Company’s Matching Gift Program?
With Give BIG Lexington and the holidays approaching, it is time to review your annual giving potential.
DidyouknowoverhalfofFortune500companiesofferamatchinggiftprogram?
Didyouknowyoumayworkforacompanythatoffersmatchinggiftsbenefits?
While only a few companies within Lexington and the surrounding areas publicly offer matching gifts, LCF found that many of these companies have employees that are not taking advantage of the program due to being unaware of these benefits. In the United States, $4 - $7 billion in matching gift funds is estimated go unclaimed every year, according to Double the Donation 2023 reports. This amounts to only 9% of US donors participating in a workplace giving program.
Select companies will match donations dollar for dollar. Some will even match your monies two to one. Think, for every dollar you donate, you could double or triple the impact.
A recent Double the Donation survey showed 84% of donors are more likely to give if a match is offered, and that one in three donors is more likely to make a larger gift when a match is applied. If this sounds like you, talk with your HR representative about your company’s matching gift program today and make your donations go further.

Do you own or operate a company that wants to promote your matching gifts benefits? Let LCF know by contacting our office (308) 324.6704 or emailing office@lexfoundation.org.
