PRESIDENT’S PODIUM

Dear Foundation Friends,

As President of the Lexington Community Foundation, I am honored and excited to lead this remarkable organization. Our Foundation is a testament to the power of community and the collective impact we can achieve by coming together with a shared purpose.

Moving forward, my vision for the Foundation is centered around the principle of “strength in numbers.” By collaborating more effectively, we can maximize our efforts and create greater impact in the areas that matter most to our community. It is through unity and cooperation that we can truly do more.

Two Board members are stepping down this year. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Patty Mandelko for 28 years of dedicated service. Patty’s leadership and commitment have been instrumental in shaping the Foundation’s success. I also want to thank Dave Roemmich for his six years of invaluable service. Both of these individuals have left a lasting mark on our organization.

Please join me in welcoming Nuria Lemus and Dan Keller, our newest board members. Their expertise and enthusiasm will undoubtedly enhance our efforts and drive us toward achieving our goals.

As we come to summer’s end and begin to enter the fall season, I would like to remind you of our Give BIG Lexington day of giving on Thursday, November 7, 2024. On this day you can contribute to over 80 worthwhile causes under the LCF unbrella. Let’s make a difference in people’s lives.

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we will build our strong Foundation and strive to make a meaningful difference in our community.

Warm regards,

Welcome Our New Board Members

Dan Keller is a Nebraska native who moved to Lexington in 2002. Originally from the small village of Newport, Nebraska, three hours north of Lexington, the town's appeal had a great job, a Walmart, a McDonalds, and an interstate, all major city upgrades. A few years after moving to Lexington, Dan says, “I met my wife, Shannon, had a couple of kids, and am living happily ever after!” “Lexington has continued to grow and embrace our family, and we are extremely fortunate to be a part of this community.” Dan is a proud graduate of UNL with a degree in agricultural business. “I don’t think I could have picked a better degree to match my current job and community. I look forward to serving my community as a member of the Lexington Community Foundation.”

Nuria Lemus was born and raised in Michoacán, Mexico, and moved to Lexington at the age of 10. A proud graduate of Lexington High School and the University of Nebraska in Kearney, Nuria is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. As a Bilingual College Planning Specialist with EducationQuest Foundation, Nuria is dedicated to helping students achieve their higher education goals. In addition to her professional role, Nuria owns Eventos LLC, an event planning and coordinating business, and is a partner of family-owned Taqueria Max, a Mexican restaurant in Lexington. Her husband, Joel Lemus, is a school counselor at Lexington High School and the head coach of the Lexington Minutemen Fútbol team. Together, they are raising three children, Benjamin, Isabel and Sebastian. Nuria Lemus

Businesses Boost Employee Engagement with Matching Gift Policies

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a lif e by what we give.”

Across the nation and in our hometown, locals spend nearly one-quarter of their year at work. While it may be all too uncommon for someone to grumble about the daily grind, local businesses are finding new ways to restore a greater purpose to mission and truly givi ng back to community. In doing so, they are reducing s taff turnover, improving employee wellbeing, and strengthening ties to their communities.

Creating Workplace Generosity

Over 10 businesses in the Lexington area are embrac ing the power of Matching Gifts, turning employee generosity into community impact. We recently chatted with the First Interstate Bank Branch President, Eva Johnson, to get the scoop on how their Matching Gift program is making waves.

At First Interstate, it’s all about local impact and getting involved. Eva shared, “We believe in gi ving back, and we want our employees to invest their tim e in the community.” Their Matching Gift program matches employee donations 1:1 and strongly encourages staf f to volunteer.

The bank’s team recently volunteered at the Majesti c Theatre in Lexington, where they had a blast and

connected with people they don’t usually see. Eva w as enthusiastic about the experience, saying, “We love doing this! It’s a great way to have fun and meet new fac es.”

When asked about advice for other companies considering boosting their volunteerism or donation support, Eva emphasized the importance of teamwork. “It has to be a group effort,” she said. “We’re fortunate to have a great system for tracking our volunteer hours and matching donations. First Interstate Bank prioritizes the communities we serve, and this approach helps our s taff build personal connections in Lexington.”

It’s clear that a little support and a lot of enthu siasm can go a long way toward fostering community spirit!

The privilege is mine to return to Lexington, in order to serve a community that helped raise me.
