Dear Foundation Friends,

Dear Foundation Friends,

Dear Foundation Friends,

Another year has passed at the Foundation and I am truly honored to serve as president of this incredible organization. It is my favorite time of the year as summer passes to fall and we get to reflect on all the blessings that we have been given in our lives. I am grateful that we live in a community that works on a continuous basis to improve itself and embraces the diversity that makes us so strong.

You will see in this Foundation Forum how the Lexington Community Foundation works to be a vital piece of that continuous process of growth in Lexington. From the donors who so graciously give to improve the lives of others to the events like “The Key” and “Give Big Lexington” where we all can come together no matter the amount you are able to give and support your favorite causes in our community.

As I reflect on my years at LCF, I realize how much I fully appreciate the privilege of leadership. Those in these formal positions like mine often receive all the accolades when in fact, it takes many to make us look good and achieve our goals. For LCF, it starts with a group of people who feel a responsibility to give back to their community – our donors. Our donors are an extraordinary group of people who fundamentally care and want to give back to their community. It has been an ho nor for me to be part of your philanthropic intentions and the issues that you are committed to.

In addition, over the past 25 years, I have had the benefit of working with exceptional Boards that have made a series of decisions that have positioned the Foundation today with a plan for continued growth and impact in the future. Thank you for supporting me in my position and personally. I appreciate that you knew and respected that for me, next to my family, my job as Executive Director was a priority.

In 2014 the Foundation added a full-time administrative assistant position. I have had the pleasure of leading three staff members that have assisted me in setting the Foundation’s mission into motion. I thank these gals for the dedication, commitment, and excellence they brought to LCF every day. I have enjoyed working with each of you!

And then there are my community colleagues. We have worked together to build relationships, develop trust, and share learnings. That collective wisdom and ingenuity have benefitted all sectors and citizens in our community. I have learned from you, and thank you for your leadership, honesty, and passion for this community.

Reflecting back to 1998, when I accepted the position at LCF, I realize I didn’t know anything about leading a community foundation. Well, here are a few things I have learned.

Lexington is moving forward with great momentum! We have many things going for us - a central location, an abundance of resources, a solid education system, and a strong continuum of leaders who know that our strengths and assets outweigh our challenges.

Many philanthropists turn to community foundations to set up a charitable fund to simplify the giving process. For Mike Jeffrey that was exactly the case. Mike established the Mike Jeffrey Charitable Fund , a donoradvised fund with the Lexington Community Foundation (LCF) in 2020 using distributions from his IRA. The fund allows him to direct donations to the causes he chooses. In 2021, Mike also became a member of the Lexington Community Foundation's Planned Giving Society. We asked Mike to share his story and thoughts on charitable giving that might be helpful to others considering giving options.

Mike’s great grandfather, William Robb, homesteaded southeast of Lexington in the 1870s. He was born and raised in Lexington, and his family has always lived on Robb Ranch. Mike spent six years in the US Navy and then came back to Lexington to farm and ranch with his dad. He even married a Lexington girl, Jeanne Kral, in 1981.

When he was in the service, Mike began investing some small amounts of money in a mutual fund. Uncle Sam took care of most of his needs, so he had some extra money to invest. After he returned from the service, Mike continued to invest when he had some extra income. Jeanne was a very kind and compassionate person, and she helped him get more into a giving mindset. He was giving mostly locally to charities and organizations on a hitand-miss basis. When LCF introduced “Give BIG Lexington” several years ago, it greatly streamlined and simplified his giving. With his charitable fund established, all he does now is check a box and fill in the amount.

The Orthman family roots go deep in the Lexington community. Bill’s grandmother Vera Anderson Orthman was born in Lexington in 1894. She and her husband Ed farmed around Lexington their entire life. Bill’s father, Henry, and mother, Wilma Bodemer Orthman, farmed and raised three children in Lexington before starting Orthman Manufacturing. Vera, Henry, Bill, and his two sisters went through the Lexington School system, with Henry and his children graduating high school in what is now the Lexington Middle School. Bill’s wife, Meredith Stewart Orthman, moved to Lexington to work right out of school, and she and Bill have lived, thrived, and enjoyed the community their whole lives.

The family values of giving back to the community were instilled early on. Bill’s father, Henry Orthman, was a Dawson County Foundation founding member 40 years ago and served on the board for 12 years. Bill was also a volunteer LCF board member for 12 years and held the positions of Treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee.

Bill & Meredith have been generous in supporting today’s community needs and are now passing on that generosity to the Lexington Community Foundation through their legacy plans. They believe giving through the Foundation is one of the best ways to support the needs of the community and our neighbors. In addition, the Orthmans feel the funds affiliated with the Foundation are more successful because of their relationship with the Foundation. As members of the LCF Planned Giving Society , Bill states, “this is an excellent way to show a commitment to the future of our community.”

For the past 40 years, our leaders have navigated this organization toward developing relationships with donors, board members, professional advisors, and a regional network of non-profits. The Foundation has grown and expanded, yet the essence of that original mission has been unwavering in its commitment to serving others. We have used all of the resources available to us to accomplish great things.
