Design 3 NEIGHdlepoint
ARTIST Donna Eads | Mike Cooper MEDIUM Needlepoint | Epoxy ARTIST COMMENTS In the style of French artist Frederique Morrel, Kentucky artists Donna Lynn Eads and Mike Cooper present "NEIGHdlepoint", an equestrian creation using vintage and new needlepoint. In addition to being the horse capital of the world, Lexington is also known as the unofficial needlepoint capital of the world and is the perfect place for the home of this amazing needlepoint creation. Several hundred needlepointers from all over will stitch jockey silk squares honoring KY Derby, Bluegrass Stakes and Breeders’ Cup winners along with famous Kentucky horse farms which will be meticulously incorporated into this piece of art. The famous devil's red and blue Calumet Farm jockey silks are the first of many squares to be completed.

Design 8 Oodles
ARTIST Thomas Cauthen ARTIST STATEMENT My horse “Oodles” is a combination of many of my previous drawings. The name “Oodles” is meant to make you think of the word "doodles" which is a word that many people associate with the street art style that covers the outside of my horse. My artistic inspiration mainly comes from graffiti and street artists like Banksy, Vexx, and Florian Satzinger. While I do draw from these artists' styles, I also take inspiration from places around Kentucky such as the basketball on the horse’s shoulder, meant to highlight Kentucky basketball history. On the neck of the horse, I put the abbreviation for Kentucky to simply promote the horse state. The head of the horse is a reference to Big Lex because of its similar blue coloring. I intend to include other references to state culture as well on the other side of the horse. Hopefully, my horse would be a piece of art that would make lookers think and also expose them to this great style that I love so much.

The flower garland will consist of purple and yellow asters and orchids handcrafted with polymer clay. My horse will be designed in the colors purple, yellow, and white to honor the Breeders’ Cup. I will use acrylic paints. Each mosaic piece will be hand baked polymer clay engraved and colored. The forelock mane and tail will be lifelike with a clay baked horsehair. My mosaic education and inspirational horse will carry a lifelike jockey made of clay and natural mosaic.

ARTIST Michael Roberts MEDIUM Acrylic paint, rubber hose, LED lights, sheet aluminum, cable, auto paint, auto clear coat, foam, fiberglass, steel, screws. ARTIST COMMENTS The design is able to show concept, but not all of subject matter or fields represented. Needs more healthcare, architectural, and some other things. But it is supposed to show the blue-collar work that goes into building the blues grass. Ky is not just horses, bourbon, and healthcare. There are a lot of people in the state who are heroes of other industry and are just as important to the way of life here in our state. And if you look closely, the different parts and pieces are accurate in representation of working order. So if someone from a field sees their profession represented. They will see that the subject matter makes sense and accurately represents what happens or needs to be done in the real-world scenarios. I want the horse to look like it would actually move and work by the work being done beneath the surface. Jensen the name. Kentucky, you the worker, and manufacturing. The people element is very important. Thank you for your consideration.

The football markings on the horses face symbolize the UK football teams most recent successful year. ARTIST COMMENTS The iconography of this horse represents the story of Kentucky soldiers, bourbon, and recent history. The metal horse on the front of one side represent the Monument at Ground Zero to Special Forces soldiers who left training at our Cumberland River to go to Afghanistan; the silvery forelegs represent the beams left at Ground Zero, one of which remains in the Nation Ground Zero Monument. The midsection on this side flows with the landscape of Kentucky, our Lake Cumberland, a houseboat and sailboat. The mane is mountains to sky. The rolling hills leading to darker mountains fade to an orange sunset at the hind quarters which leads to the all over Orange- Amber- Coppery Bourbon flowing tail. The other side has an American Flag waving into a fade which curves into the curves of barrel staves of stacked barrels on the full flank of the horse. Below are the hind legs which are copper in tribute to our historic copper stills.

Using techniques that would differentiate his work from other modern artists. Entertaining figures and shapes animate his canvases through the use of spray, oil, and acrylic paints. Casey’s unique paintings reflect his view of the world and situations, which stimulate his life. He considers all his paintings to be self-portraits whether they are realistic or abstract depicted forms of emotional and physical aspects of his daily life. Born in Shreveport, La, Casey now resides in Louisville Kentucky with his wife and three children. He graduated with a bachelor of art degree in 2001 from the University of Kentucky. I am a mostly whimsical fantasy artist with lots of color. I apply for public art projects as they stretch my imagination as well as my skill level. Preparation is generally 50 % or more of the work time, but then the fun begins if all my material is readily available.

ARTIST Fritznel Elvenus MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST BIO My name is Fritznel elveus and I am an artist, writer and illustrator. I grew up in an orphanage in Haiti. I moved to the united States of America in December 2008. When I was growing up I always wanted to be an artist. Therefore, I spent a lot of time drawing while the other children were playing soccer because that is what brought me the most joy. I like to use different types of mediums such: acrylic and oil paint, charcoals, and pastels. Some of my favorite things to draw are portraits of children and pets, and landscapes. I also enjoy writing and illustrating and recently published my first children’s book called “Ti Kekey– The Goal of My Life.”
Design 113 Bourbonfall
ARTIST Fritznel Elvenus MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENTS I decided to have a little fun with this painting by combining few things that make Kentuckians proud. I thought one of the best ways to do that is to create a bourbon fall. I hope this represent the beautiful nature and great products of Kentucky.
Design 114 Trust
ARTIST Vida Vitagliano MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENTS I come from a long line of creative types. Although I tried to escape that fate early in my adulthood, I found myself in mid-life compelled to create artful works. The expression of joy motivates me to create, along with the intention to trigger joy in others. My inspiration comes from nature and the connectedness of all things. While I work, bold, bright colors excite my brain, while symbols and abstract shapes draw me into the process that's how I feel about my work while I'm doing it, and my hope is to share that with the observer.

Design 136 Horses in Plan
ARTIST Melody Farris Jackson MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST BIO Melody Farris Jackson is a designer and visual artist that bridges the gap between concept and creation. She is known for her original artwork created for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Opening Ceremonies. As the Art Director for the Opening Ceremonies, she developed a new way of seeing and experiencing horses…”Horses in Plan”. In a clever twist of our traditional views of the horse…she paints and draws the “Horses in Plan” which uses the plan view, or from the top down rather than the more recognizable profile or side view. What she reveals is a unique perspective that truly showcases the beauty and grace of a horse’s movement and form…a dance, a song, an instrument of precision and skill.

He never stopped using them as his preferred medium and is bewildered as to their designation as simply an art tool for children. Design 141 Hold Your Colorful Horsed
ARTIST Reagan Profit MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT "Hold Your Colorful Horses" is a lively horse design featuring swirls of abstract shapes. The shapes that would decorate the surface of the horse create a very fluid impression. The colors of this horse include cool and warm tones that melt together traveling from hues of blues at the head of the horse to hot reds at the end of the horse. The design of this horse would be completed using acrylic paint as the material.
Design 142 Wings of Many Colors
ARTIST Reagan Profit MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT "Wings of Many Colors" is a design that features the common butterflies of Kentucky. This horse would include 20 different butterflies, all unique in colors and shapes. The wings will cover the surface of the horse by layering over top each other and wrapping around the tail and legs, giving the appearance a collaged effect. Our state butterfly, the Viceroy, will be depicted in its entirety with its wings spread open on the chest of the horse, rather than just a section of the wings like the other 19 butterflies. This horse would be completed using acrylic paint as the sole material. From afar, this horse will appear abstract and colorful but upon closer view, the details and individuality of each butterfly will be revealed.

ARTIST BIO Sherrie Graham-Greene is an artist and retired teacher, formerly teaching at The School for Creative and Performing Arts. She is happiest when she is developing ideas and being creative. It doesn't matter what is being created- it could be creating a home and garden environment that feels like a sanctuary, making nourishing cuisine for family and friend dinner parties, and creating art using different kinds of materials. She is a painter who works primarily in watercolor but has also worked in acrylics and oils. As an Associate Member, her work can be seen at Artist's Attic, as well as in her local art exhibits. She is inspired by being in nature, viewing art, collecting antiques, reading, listening to music, and practicing yoga and meditation.
Design 145 Gift Horse
ARTIST Sherrie Graham-Greene MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT The proverb, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" means that when receiving a gift, be grateful for what it is and don't imply you wished for more by assessing its value. For this grazing Gift Horse, you can't but be grateful for all the gifts this sweetheart bringsso colorful and festive, just waiting for all of her gifts to be loved and appreciated!
Design 146 Limestoned
ARTIST Sherrie Graham-Greene MEDIUM Mi xed Media ARTIST COMMENT The inspiration behind this gentle creature, Limestoned, is to focus upon the unique geological characteristics of the Bluegrass region. Hidden below the softly rolling grassy fields, divided by stone fences or the characteristic white painted wooden fences, horses graze atop a hidden geological wonder. From the impermeable rock deep below the surface to the underground water table lying below the permeable limestone, water filters throughout, sometimes filling in the areas of underground caves. But Limestoned, is happily grazing on the mineral rich bluegrass, which absorbs the calcium from its limestone base. He embodies all of the unique qualities which make up the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. I am planning on using materials to model and create some depth by applying textures to represent the caves and the stone fences.

ARTIST Heather Tackett MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST BIO As a young adult Heather explored her creative side, exploring different types of art including photography and Lego portraiture. Using non-traditional media to create beautiful works of art became a preferred, if unexpected, theme in her work. She began painting with acrylics, incorporating found objects as an alternate method of applying mediums to her canvas. Simple household items like bottle caps, erasers and chopsticks become assistants to her brushes. Her fine art abstracts are brought to life on canvas in an explosion of color and texture, combining the senses to create whimsical and compelling artistic visualizations.

ARTIST Amanda Hudgins MEDIUM Mixed Media on Fiberglass ARTIST BIO Amanda Hudgins is a multimedia artist and game developer, whose work has been exhibited internationally and at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. The original piece is a 100-button arcade controller, covered in drawings made in Sharpie. My proposal for this piece is to make a horse, covered in arcade buttons, that also has doodles and designs all over the horse made out of Sharpie. If there is power available for this project, the horse will connect to a web site that will show a heat map of where the horse’s buttons are being pressed. Without power, this would still be a tactile work of art that invites users to touch. Buttons are incredibly durable and would hold up to the attention and stress of an active public.

ARTIST Studio Mel Designs Hayley Harris with Lynsay Christensen
MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST BIO Twin sisters Lynsay Christensen and Hayley Harris have loved creating from the very beginning. They continue to work together, collaborating on corporate logos, canvas artworks, prints and even a children’s book, and began designing and painting murals more than four years ago. Being at home during the coronavirus pandemic forced them to see their own homes in a new way. They painted murals and stamped walls and found that the impact of each design was huge. It made each space more joyful, more memorable, and created an environment they were more eager to be in. They decided to expand their business to create custom designs for home and office.

ARTIST Aaron Schroeder MEDIUM Mixed Media on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT I will be modifying the horse's body by building some areas up with an additive process while also reducing other areas with a reductive process. After the body changes, I'm going to then cover all the surfaces with embossed copper foil. All the edges of the copper foil will be pressed into grooves that were carved into the body during the modification phase. Those grooves will then be filled with a thick superglue which will get a dusting of copper powder before being cured with a glue activator. This process ensures that all the edges of the foil are under glue and can't be peeled back while ensuring the work of art is weather resistant.

Design 167 Bourbon Bay Horse
ARTIST John Batts MEDIUM Bourbon Barrel Rings on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENTS This horse, made from recycled bourbon barrel rings, will represent a part of the iconic Kentucky bourbon barrel that is often neglected - the metal rings. The rings, although small, are mighty. Holding the barrel together, keeping the bourbon inside so it can age. Rings from barrels are made from steel, which, much like bourbon, gets better with age. Bourbon shows its age from the color of the liquid. Steel shows its age by the color of the metal. Rusted rings prove that a barrel has been aged. This horse will be wrapped in the rings from bourbon barrels. Each ring will be hand forged to mold to the shape of the horse’s body. There will be varying lengths of the metal rings, and each will be placed in a way to accentuate the natural curves of the muscles and lines of a horse. My technique of cold forging will result in a unique sculpture that will seem like solid metal from far away, but up close will keep the detail of the rusty, metal bands.

What is directly seen in nature is my best teacher. I like to paint outdoors for a direct experience with nature; helping me to capture some of what I feel in the landscape. While I usually take photographs for reference, I try to use onsite painting to work out color, value and composition.

ARTIST BIO As a Kentuckian, I've always been interested in Horse Mania as an artist and patron of art. Before I retired from the Fayette County School System, I worked with our art faculty and students to design a colt for William Wells Brown. I enjoy drawing my many "Wanderings" on many different surfaces, such as 2-D sketches, piggy banks, ostrich eggs, as well as many various surfaces and decorations. I have exhibited my work in the Governor's Derby Exhibit, and several local art shows at the Richmond Arts Council. I started making my Wanderings when I was at the University of Kentucky, then when I started teaching my Wanderings kept me engaged in conferences and staff meetings. Over the years I have found others enjoy my Wanderings as much as I enjoy making them.

ARTIST Pamela McDaniel MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST BIO I believe we all have a deep spiritual connection to nature. The rich, magical environments, animals, and figures I depict in my paintings come from my need to honor and understand that connection. An intimate relationship with the environment is built into our psyche and it is my hope that my paintings will help stir a response to that connection. Everything in nature has a story that needs to be heard. I spend much of my time in direct observation of my subjects. I am inspired by explorations of the many beautiful nature preserves in my area and places traveled as well as the beauty of the garden surrounding my central Kentucky home. I am always seeking out the native wildlife and flowers to photograph for reference and study. As I weave my photographs and observations into visual stories, I want viewers to feel the mystery and magic of ordinary things, and maybe, in some small way, help nurture a consciousness of care, connection, and commitment to nature and to our environment.

Design 343 Consider It Pure Joy
ARTIST Brooke Harris MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass
ARTIST COMMENT This concept is inspired by the idea of abundance leading to joy. Ingrid Fetell Lee, in her book Joyful, explains why repetitive patterns like dots, confetti, and stripes give us a burst of joy. “The reason is deceptively simple: small things repeated many times create a burst of joy much bigger than each individual piece could.” (pg. 62) One square of paint doesn’t amount to much, but thousands of squares of paint blanketing the horse in color becomes a potent joy maker. After the past two years and the effects of a global pandemic, we all understand this need for joy in the everyday. The horse would be an example of pure joy necessary for our present public spaces. I plan to use acrylic paint for this project with bold shades of citron, fuchsia, navy and sea foam.
Design 344 Field of Goldenrods
ARTIST Brooke Harris MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT This concept is inspired by Monet’s Poppy Field Near Giverny, but with a Kentucky twist. Using impressionistic and bold strokes, the horse will be covered in a landscape of sky and field. Bright yellow state flowers of the goldenrod will cover the foreground and recede into a solid band of yellow. The horizon line will be low enough to incorporate a brilliant blue sky and swirling clouds. Many tints and shades of green, yellow, coral and blue acrylic paint will be used to create this piece.
Field of Goldenrods will inspire Kentuckians to appreciate their own state’s beauty and to seek it out and notice it.

Design 370 Big Blue
ARTIST Haley Younce MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT "Big Blue" was inspired by the line work that is common in my fine artwork (intaglio printmaking). I wanted to utilize the shape of the horse to create an illusionistic design incorporating pattern and different values of everyones favorite, Kentucky Blue. This work would be painted with acrylic paint.
Design 371 Kentucky Contour
ARTIST Haley Younce MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT "Kentucky Contour" was inspired by my love of printmaking, as well as one of my favorite lessons I used to teach my students, cross contour line drawings. In printmaking, line is the main source of structure and value throughout the entire piece, which challenges you to use a variety of different lines to create movement. With this in mind along with cross contour line drawings, I utilized the contours of the horse to create a line design that conveys movement throughout the entirety of the horse. This piece would be painted with Acrylic paint, where the colors resemble Kentucky topographic (elevation) maps.

ARTIST Gretchen Bainum MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST BIO Born in 1950 in Bozeman, Montana, I was one of five children of well known artists Robert and Gennie DeWeese, thus I have been surrounded by the art world all my life. It has been my most profound influence. I grew up making art for any and all occasions, learning at an early age that it is a valid and powerful way to respond to my world. Early years were spent working on ranches in the West. My husband and I moved to Kentucky in 1980 where we farmed and raised our three children. I taught Elementary Education and Art, K-6 in Fleming County, Kentucky and spent summers working for the US Forest Service in Montana.
Design 375 American Horse
ARTIST Gretchen Bainum MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass ARTIST COMMENT When my father passed away, some 30 years ago, we found a small sketch in his pocket that he had done of many interlocking and overlapping faces, each one unique. I have always been enchanted by that quick line drawing he had made so many years ago and have used the idea for this submission. America is made up of so many kinds of faces, old and young, male and female, every possible skin tone and hair color, and every range of emotion! What a tapestry we have created! And what fun to create these faces! The title, American Horse, comes from a well-known Lakota chief, one of the indigenous occupants of this country in its early days. It seems appropriate.
Design 376 Here Come the Horses!
ARTIST Gretchen Bainum MEDIUM Acrylic on Fiberglass
ARTIST COMMENT I have chosen charging horses as the subject of this submission, attempting to portray them with the fluidness and spontaneity of gestural line drawings. I chose the unusual white line against a solid black horse, with the exception of white mane, tail and legs for the sake of contrast. The result is a compelling and eye-0catching image that imitates the movement of the statue. This design is made specifically for this pose. I plan to use Chroma Mural Paint to carry out this design, an acrylic product formulated especially for outdoor murals. I have used this product in the past, and have been well pleased with its durability. I will also apply a coat of acrylic medium gloss and a UV protectant.
