“ The
best you can offer
your guests is the unexpected ”
Elsa Maxwell was the hostess with the mostest. Cole Porter said so in a song, and everyone who was anyone hummed that tune. “The best you can offer your guests is the unexpected,” was Ms. Maxwell’s motto. And that’s precisely what she did. New York society ladies found themselves milking cows at a barnyard-themed hoedown at the Waldorf. The Duke of Marlborough learned to his surprise that he was the one “whodunit” when a sophisticated soiree took a sharp turn into a murder mystery. Salvador Dali sauntered into a Come As You Were party, phone to ear, face smeared with shaving cream, exactly as he was when his invite arrived. A Maxwell scavenger hunt had moguls, movie stars and marquis scouring Paris for such swag as a music-hall dancer’s shoe, a black swan from the Bois de Boulogne and the red pompom on a French seaman’s hat. Legend has it that the night ended with a barefoot dancer, two revelers hospitalized courtesy an angry swan, and a British diplomat’s missus accused of theft by the French Navy. Witty and imaginative, daring and delightful, sneaking a page or two from the Maxwell playbook, LexArts’ ARTY PARTIES are the must-do dos of the social season. Dos that deliver serious good times and do serious good for the arts: to date, ARTY PARTIES have raised over a quarter of a million dollars to benefit local artists and arts organizations. With starlight and spandex, ghosts and gameshows, ballet and bowling, magic, mid-century marvels and more on the menu, there’s sure to be an ARTY PARTY or two to float your party boat. Make your reservations right now, because some parties are sold out and others well on their way.

The Garage
Hosts Aimee and Javier Lanza “You can trust your car to the man who wears the star,” hummed many an American Dad as he watched a Texaco attendant “Fill’er up!” back in the day. The old Texaco station on Leestown Road will soon be singing a different tune because the Lanzas (owners of Centro), are turning it into the sort of neighborhood bar where you stop in for a bourbon or a brewski, down a dog or slider or two, then take a spin at pool, badminton, or cornhole. Pretty soon, everyone will know its name (The Garage), but you and your friends will take it for its first test drive at this pre-opening party.

Watch magic happen from way up high as the sun goes down, the stars come out and the city lights up. Sip a Main and Lime signature cocktail crafted for the occasion, savor small bites from Athenian Grill, listen to the jazz and contemporary song stylings of award-winning duo, Jessica Bayne and Jason Mitchell, and watch artist Julie Quick capture it all on canvas in a painting to be auctioned at evening’s end.

And he’s off! Cheer LexArts Board Chair, John Cioci, on to victory as his sulky takes to the track to contend for the First Annual Red Mile Celebrity Harness Racing Trophy. It’s a safe bet he’ll be wearing LexArts silks. Picnic food and drink will be on offer, as will the thrill of watching world-class trotters and pacers compete well into the evening at the world’s second-oldest harness track. If you’d like a souvenir (other than your winning ticket of course) you can bid on the painting that will be created live that very evening.

Hosts Madonna & Craig Turner When is a garage more than just a garage? When Craig and Madonna Turner work their magic and transform an erstwhile vintage auto repair and storage facility into a playground for grownups plus a place to park their collection of classic cars. As if that weren’t enough, they’ll be flying in Steve Cohen, the “millionaire’s magician” whose regular gig is blowing the minds of the likes of Warren Buffett, Stephen Sondheim, and the Queen of Morocco, at the luxurious Lotte New York Palace Hotel. A cocktail supper in the Coyote Café at The Garage rounds out an evening of pure enchantment.

Minnie Bullock, the avid horticulturist who founded the Garden Club of Lexington, likely never imagined pirouettes, plies and pas de deux among the exquisitely ordered plantings in the garden of her Gratz Park home. But that’s exactly what’s on the menu courtesy the Kentucky Ballet Theater – along with bourbon cocktails, wine, beer, and heavy hors d’oeuvres. Every city needs an “Al’s Bar” and Lexington’s lucky to still have one. Recently renovated but still satisfyingly dive-y, Al’s hasn’t lost any of its swagger. And there’ll be no shortage of that when the evening’s entertainment, Johnny Conqueroo, hits the stage. “If a punk band wrote a blues album for a Tarantino film, that’s the sound of Johnny Conqueroo”, said some smart soul, and they weren’t kidding. Your ticket buys you a drink, an assortment of edible treats and an evening of bar-bluesy rock-n-roll that’ll take you back to your college days. A portion of the cash bar take will go to LexArts.

Around these parts, a home designed and built by Richard B. Isenhour is a must-see for fans of mid-century style. For two Lexington couples, must-see became must-have, and fortunately for us, on one rare evening, must-share. First, Thom Smith and Rodney Day will open the doors of their Isenhour house in The Colony, furnished in the Prairie Style and set in a woodland landscape of evergreens, rhododendrons and azaleas. Then, on to the distinctive house with floor-to-ceiling glass panels and sawtooth roofline on Bridgeport Drive that Richard Isenhour built for his own family in 1972, respectfully renovated and preserved by the Polks. As the party progresses, Larry Isenhour will talk about what inspired his father, a man fascinated by creativity in architecture and in life.
