The History of Post 5935
Post 5935, Veterans of Foreign Wars has a long and proud History. An organizational meeting was held on January 31, 1946, in the Belleville Community Hall. The inspirational leader who got things going was the late John Hostetler.
The new Post wasted no time in organizing and establishing itself within the community. At the inaugural meeting, the necessary offcers were duly elected: John Hostetler, post commander; Robert Kennedy, senior vice-commander; Dave Bigelow, quartermaster; and J.B. Stuck, secretary. At the second meeting, these offcers were isntalled with the assistance of an offcial of the state department of the VFW and a representative from the Huntingdon post.
grounds. A stone monument was erected in honor of all those from the community who have served their country in any of these foreign war theaters. It was dedicated on Memorial Day services of that year. The stone was contribtued by Dr. Henry Miller.
The labor was provided by the Stuter brothers, James, Joseph and Earl. Bronze tablets were purchased to commemorate those from the community who served in World War I, World War II and a special plaque for special mention of those who made the supreme sacrifce, dying for their country.

The next project to be undertaken was the monument.
Moisture and freezing over the last several years was taking its toll. The monument was completely dismantled down to the base. Sunrise Masonry was the contractor for the masonry and Denson Bonson and Son were the electrical contractor.

The following businesses and organizations supported the Post’s efforts in 1977 and are still advertising today: Belleville Lions Club, Bel-Vue Inn, Big Valley Feed & Grain, Boring Transport Inc., Gib’s Service Center, Henderson (Baggus) Funeral Home, J.M. Yoiung & Sons, Inc. and Kish Bank.
VFW Post 5935 extends its sincere thanks to all those who have supported the memorial ad program through the years and a special thanks to the staff of The Sentinel for its continued effort as well.
The second meeting was held in the Odd Fellows hall above the now non-existent Shaffer store. The gypsy life held no appeal for the membership and at this same meeting it was decided that a search should be made for an appropriate permanent post home. One was soon found in the former home of Levi M. Yoder. It was purchased for $15,000. Within four months, Post 5935 was founded, organized, housed and holding Memorial Day services.
The Post home was dedicated on May 30, 1946, with a service performed by John P. Martin, pastor of the West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church. The building had been erected in the 1920s as a residence of Levi Yoder. Yoder was a local businessman who operated the carpet factory on the Belleville Hill. He began Trella Street by building a series of homes there in the early 1930s and he started a Maytag dealership in Lewistown. This former private residence is a landmark in the community and spacious enough to accomodate Post meetings, banquets, wedding receptions, birthday parties and Christmas parties. Over the years, the Post home has served as a meeting hall for many other organizations, including the Belleville Lions Club, Belleville Civic Club, Rebekah Lodge and the Big Valley Area Jaycees.

The Post is proud of its record of community service, too. The Post home garage was used by the Big Valley Ambulance Club from April 1970 until completion of the new frehouse. Easter egg hunts have been held on the lawn. The Post contributes to local organizations and it awards an annual college scholarship to a student from Menno-Union Township area.
The Post has supported a number of athletic activities. It supported a team in the Miffin County Twilight League from the league’s inception to its debanding, winnign the league championship from 1954-1957.
The Post sponsored another baseball team, this one in the Senior Babe Ruth League. A trophy case in the Post home contains the various proofs of participation and excellence.
The Post’s largest promotion is the annual Memorial Day parade and service. A fne list of speakers has graced these proceedings from their inception, from local pastors, judges, generals and dignitaries, to state representatives and governement offcials.
The Post has its day every year on Memorial Day, but almost every day the community of Belleville has in some way benefted by the existence of this organization.
During the last three years there have been extensive repairs and changes made around the Post. The large trees that were around the building had to be removed. Blue spruce were planted in their place but have been slow to show good prog-
The design of the monument was changed to a rectangular shape with no sloping sides as the shape was before. A completely new electrical system was installed, using the latest technology in lighting. The complete monument and fag can be lit using only 93 watts of electricity.
To complete the monument, a plaque showing the names of the two veterans whose lives were lost in the Vietnam War was added to the back side. This was purchased by the AMVETS of Belleville.
To complete the construction project, new walks were placed around the monument, new steps up to the porch and a new front wall and steps along the highway.
The members of the Post are committed to the preservation of this magnifcent building which has taken a place in the history of our community. Additional projects are in the planning stages and we hope to roll them out over the next several months. This all comes with a big price tag and any contributions are greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank the community for all their support over the past 80 years.
