How To Reserve A Free Community Center

Lewis-Mcchord Communities Did you know that there are 4 community centers at LMC that are available to our current residents? They are located in Eagleview on JBLM North, Discovery Village on JBLM Main, Clarkdale on JBLM Main and McChord on McChord Field. The best part is... They are FREE! Here are the steps to reserving one of our centers.

Visit or call your District Office to see if your center is available on the date you need it. (You are not restricted to using only the Community Center within your District) Pay a 250.00 fully refundable deposit for the facility and sign necessary paperwork. (Your refund is contingent on you returning the center in original condition. Deposits are returned in 48 hours) Enjoy your wedding, birthday party, sport party or any number of events.

These facilities are provided to you at no charge. Please be mindful and treat them with care and return them to the original condition.

Fall Tips and Resident Reminders Extended Leave or Vacation Away From Your Home...

When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absences Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices.

Before leaving your home, we strongly recommend that you: • Stop mail and newspaper delivery.

• Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. ANIMAL CONTROL WILL TAKE PETS LEFT IN HOME DURING YOUR ABSENCE. • Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computer.

• Lock and secure all doors and windows.

• Turn off water supply line to washing machine.

During winter months: Please call our Customer Service line at 253-9123500 for special “cold weather” instructions to prevent frozen / broken pipes.

Holiday decorations are restricted to first story gutters.

• Halloween decorations must be removed by Nov 10th Halloween decorations consist of Jack o’ lanterns (carved pumpkins), skeletons, ghosts, spider webs, spooky décor, witches, scary cats and all related type blow up characters.

• Fall Seasonal decorations must be removed by Dec 10th Seasonal decorations (Fall) consist of leaves, scarecrows, gourds, whole un-carved pumpkins, natural wreaths, hay bales, corn stalks, etc .

Please note, immediate removal may be required of any decorations, alterations, additions or fixtures which are made or installed without Agent’s prior written consent. The premises will then be restored or rep

Recreational Vehicle Pass Policy A recreational vehicle-type is defined as any vehicle that is not designed primarily as a passenger vehicle and includes, but is not limited to the following: motor homes, travel trailers (self-contained and pop-up), 5 th wheel trailers, campers (mounted on trucks and not mounted), motorboats, sailboats, jet skis, ATVs, any type of trailer and boat trailers of any kind. Determination of recreational vehicle violations is at the discretion of Lewis-McChord Communities. Recreational vehicles are not allowed to be stored in the Lewis-McChord family housing areas or anywhere on the premises. Your neighborhood manager may issue a 72 hour pass to allow you to bring such vehicles to your home for packing and cleaning. There will be a limit of two (2) such passes issued per month to each resident.

Garbage Pick-up Schedule: Have garbage curbside by 5:30 a.m. on your designated day.

Pet Responsibilities

•

Any and all pet(s) and animal(s) approved by Lessor must be kept inside the residence at all times except when on a leash or when securely confined in your fenced backyard, provided the fence is approved by management and is of adequate size and strength to restrain the animal. Pets are not to be tied up and left unattended if there is no fence.

Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet’s waste immediately, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area.

Pets and Fall Weather

With the fall season comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member.

• Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements.

• Make sure your animal has food and water.

• Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme.

Wind and Structure Damage Here in the Northwest, during the fall, winds can be pretty heavy. These Heavy winds can be damaging to doors and screens on the homes. Please be mindful of this when leaving doors open. The wind can rip an open door from it’s hinges causing not only damage to the door but also to the home structure. This can result in a cost to the resident for repairs. So please make sure you are closing your doors and securing them. This applies to out swinging doors.

Reminder... Change The Batteries In Your Smoke Detector All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms.

Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order. *** Tip: A good way to remember batteries is to change them every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time. Upcoming Daylight Savings End Date November 6 (Set your clocks back one hour)

Landscaping and Fall Maintenance

During the fall and winter months our landscaping teams will maintain flowerbeds, yards, rake leaves and clear shrubbery throughout the communities, with the exception of fenced yards. Fenced yards must be maintained by the resident and a yard waste bin will be provided to you at no additional cost. Those without fences who choose to maintain their own yards, can bag leaves and leave them curbside for the landscapers to collect on their rounds. No garbage may be in the bags.

Fallen Trees and or Large Shrub Debris

The fall and winter storms can cause fallen trees and large tree/shrub debris to be scattered throughout the communities. Should you have a fallen tree and or bush in your yard, please submit a work order so that we may have it removed safely.

TRICK OR TREAT Halloween is an exciting time of year for children. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) would like to take the opportunity to help you make it as safe as possible. Trick-or-treating will take place in JBLM housing areas October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parents are asked to accompany their young children during trick-ortreating and to use caution when crossing roadways. If you are driving, please be extremely careful on the roadways, especially in housing areas and where children are present.

•

Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering. A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.

•

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won’t catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source.

•

Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights or glow sticks. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Children should wear well fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother’s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking. Hats and scarves should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes. Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loosely fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision.

Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers. To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over.

Wet leaves should be swept from sidewalks and steps. Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. Barracks are not authorized. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult. People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o’lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame.

*** Not all resident homes participate in Trick Or Treat, yet choose to leave their porch light on for safety and visibility purposes. On the reverse side of this information sheet is a door sign for your convenience.

Please hang this sign on your door to let resident children know if your home is handing out treats or not participating in the festivities. Thank you. ***

Does your kiddos costume require boots? Don’t spend a lot of money on a pair of boots your child may only wear one time. Buy over size socks in the color you need. Slide them over your child’s shoes. They look like boots and cost a fraction of the price. Yes by the end of the night the socks will be shredded and unusable, but they served their purpose for one night and your kiddo stole the show with his/her fantastic costume...

Create Chains for Decorating

Chains are pricey, heavy, bulky and storing them is a nightmare. If you want them just for decorating, try this amazing, easy and inexpensive trick. Buy pool noodles or pipe insulator foam tubes. Have a parent slice rings from the foam. Create 1 slice in each ring (skip this step for pipe insulator as it already has the slit) Now you have your links. Connect the links by inserting one into the next.

Welcome to GO Lewis-McChord You have probably wondered what the vans driving around Joint Base Lewis-McChord with GO Transit signs on the top are for. What are these GO Transit vehicles doing by every DFAC, gym, and major route on JBLM? GO Transit is a free transit system available to everyone on JBLM that lets you travel the main areas around base.

How do you use GO Transit? Find the stop closest to you by visiting the GOLewisMcChord.com website or downloading the free phone app OneBusAway. Use the schedules listed at any of those locations to determine the next time a vehicle is due at that stop. Stand within five feet of the GO Transit stop and the driver will stop, although a little waive is always appreciated, especially in low-visibility situations. When you board, let the driver know what stop you want to go to. If your destination requires a transfer, the driver will communicate with the other vehicles to make sure you easily get onto the next vehicle.

In addition to the on-base transportation options this provides, GO Transit also connects with two off-base locations. The 512 Park-and- Ride in Lakewood provides connections with public transportation to Sea-Tac Airport, Seattle, Lakewood Town Center, and Tacoma. The DuPont extension provides access to restaurants and businesses downtown as well as weekday connections with public transportation to Seattle.

Consider trying GO Transit on your next trip to the Post Exchange, the gym, or an appointment. You will find it easier than fighting traffic and more convenient than searching for parking! If you have any questions about GO Transit or other GO Lewis-McChord programs, call (253)-966- 3939.

Green Living By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer ~ Directorate of Public Works Now that the kids are back in school and routines are getting re-established, it’s time to get ready for Fall. How to clean up after all that summer fun? An Eco-friendly home is good for pets, kids and their parents. With only a few simple changes you can go-green

in your home: • Clean your microwave with a slice of lemon in a small bowl of water, heat for 45 seconds then wipe away stains and eliminate unpleasant odors.

• Consider using an all-natural cleaner, it’s simple to make and safe for the family and works anywhere in the home.

Due to the chemical nature of many commercial cleaners, they can poison, corrode, explode, or ignite easily when handled improperly.

Household cleaning, home improvement, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden care, and hobbies all produce by-products that are considered household hazardous waste (HHW) when discarded.

Sometimes these are wrongly disposed of by pouring down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or putting them out with the trash.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord housing residents can bring their household hazardous waste to building 1210, Environmental Operations, Monday-Thursday 1300-1530, Friday 1300-1500.

Here are some more ways to go-green in your home: • Worldwide over 27,000 trees are cut down every day just to make toilet paper! Switch to 100% post-consumer recycled toilet paper.

• Add more organic produce to the shopping list and plan meals to reduce food waste.

• Recycle plastic bags or plastic air filled shipping pouches (just cut them and let the air out) at one of the recycling centers or the grocery stores.
