How To Reserve A Free Community Center

Lewis-Mcchord Communities Did you know that there are 4 community centers at LMC that are available to our current residents? They are located in Eagleview on JBLM North, Discovery Village on JBLM Main, Clarkdale on JBLM Main and McChord on McChord Field. The best part is... They are FREE! Here are the steps to reserving one of our centers.

Visit or call your District Office to see if your center is available on the date you need it. (You are not restricted to using only the Community Center within your District) Pay a 250.00 fully refundable deposit for the facility and sign necessary paperwork. (Your refund is contingent on you returning the center in original condition. Deposits are returned in 48 hours) Enjoy your wedding, birthday party, sport party or any number of events.

These facilities are provided to you at no charge. Please be mindful and treat them with care and return them to the original condition.

Clutter Collectors

Are you tired of picking up your kiddos stuff all over the house and taking it all to his/her room only to do it all over again tomorrow?

• Create a box or basket for each one of your kiddos.

• Put a sticker with his/her name on it.

• Set them along the hallway or stairs leading to the bedrooms.

Every time you see one of their items laying around, just toss it into the baskets.

This way at the end of the day your kids can take their baskets with them to their room and put their items away. Have them put their baskets back every morning. This makes your kids responsible for their own items.

Make one for both parents too if you want to set an example. This can only add one more easy element to your daily routine.

Fall Tips and Resident Reminders Extended Leave or Vacation Away From Your Home...

When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absences Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices.

Before leaving your home, we strongly recommend that you: • Stop mail and newspaper delivery.

• Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. ANIMAL CONTROL WILL TAKE PETS LEFT IN HOME DURING YOUR ABSENCE. • Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computer.

• Lock and secure all doors and windows.

• Turn off water supply line to washing machine.

During winter months: Please call our Customer Service line at 253-9123500 for special “cold weather” instructions to prevent frozen / broken pipes.

Recreational Vehicle Pass Policy A recreational vehicle-type is defined as any vehicle that is not designed primarily as a passenger vehicle and includes, but is not limited to the following: motor homes, travel trailers (self-contained and pop-up), 5 th wheel trailers, campers (mounted on trucks and not mounted), motorboats, sailboats, jet skis, ATVs, any type of trailer and boat trailers of any kind. Determination of recreational vehicle violations is at the discretion of Lewis-McChord Communities. Recreational vehicles are not allowed to be stored in the Lewis-McChord family housing areas or anywhere on the premises. Your neighborhood manager may issue a 72 hour pass to allow you to bring such vehicles to your home for packing and cleaning. There will be a limit of two (2) such passes issued per month to each resident.

Garbage Pick-up Schedule: Have garbage curbside by 5:30 a.m. on your designated day.

Pet Responsibilities

•

Any and all pet(s) and animal(s) approved by Lessor must be kept inside the residence at all times except when on a leash or when securely confined in your fenced backyard, provided the fence is approved by management and is of adequate size and strength to restrain the animal. Pets are not to be tied up and left unattended if there is no fence.

Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet’s waste immediately, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area.

Pets and Fall Weather

With the fall season comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member.

• Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements.

• Make sure your animal has food and water.

• Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme.

Wind and Structure Damage Here in the Northwest, during the fall, winds can be pretty heavy. These Heavy winds can be damaging to doors and screens on the homes. Please be mindful of this when leaving doors open. The wind can rip an open door from it’s hinges causing not only damage to the door but also to the home structure. This can result in a cost to the resident for repairs. So please make sure you are closing your doors and securing them. This applies to out swinging doors.

Reminder... Change The Batteries In Your Smoke Detector All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms.

Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order. *** Tip: A good way to remember batteries is to change them every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time. Upcoming Daylight Savings End Date November 6 (Set your clocks back one hour)

Landscaping and Fall Maintenance

During the fall and winter months our landscaping teams will maintain flowerbeds, yards, rake leaves and clear shrubbery throughout the communities, with the exception of fenced yards. Fenced yards must be maintained by the resident and a yard waste bin will be provided to you at no additional cost. Those without fences who choose to maintain their own yards, can bag leaves and leave them curbside for the landscapers to collect on their rounds. No garbage may be in the bags.

Fallen Trees and or Large Shrub Debris

The fall and winter storms can cause fallen trees and large tree/shrub debris to be scattered throughout the communities. Should you have a fallen tree and or bush in your yard, please submit a work order so that we may have it removed safely.

Welcome to GO Lewis-McChord You have probably wondered what the vans driving around Joint Base Lewis-McChord with GO Transit signs on the top are for. What are these GO Transit vehicles doing by every DFAC, gym, and major route on JBLM? GO Transit is a free transit system available to everyone on JBLM that lets you travel the main areas around base.

How do you use GO Transit? Find the stop closest to you by visiting the GOLewisMcChord.com website or downloading the free phone app OneBusAway. Use the schedules listed at any of those locations to determine the next time a vehicle is due at that stop. Stand within five feet of the GO Transit stop and the driver will stop, although a little waive is always appreciated, especially in low-visibility situations. When you board, let the driver know what stop you want to go to. If your destination requires a transfer, the driver will communicate with the other vehicles to make sure you easily get onto the next vehicle.

In addition to the on-base transportation options this provides, GO Transit also connects with two off-base locations. The 512 Park-and- Ride in Lakewood provides connections with public transportation to Sea-Tac Airport, Seattle, Lakewood Town Center, and Tacoma. The DuPont extension provides access to restaurants and businesses downtown as well as weekday connections with public transportation to Seattle.

Consider trying GO Transit on your next trip to the Post Exchange, the gym, or an appointment. You will find it easier than fighting traffic and more convenient than searching for parking! If you have any questions about GO Transit or other GO Lewis-McChord programs, call (253)-966- 3939.

Green Your Holidays By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer ~ Directorate of Public Works Make the holidays fun again by making your own gifts and decorations!

But you need to start early. How about now, or soon? If you wait until December to start, it will stress you out, and those gifts won’t turn out nearly as nice as you had hoped.

The “green” part is that you’re not buying new stuff. Homemade, do-it-yourself gifts and decorations are the ultimate recycling. In fact, reusing and re-purposing like this are actually better than recycling.

Get on the DIY green holiday train with these 10 tips!

1. Talk to yourself. Not necessarily out loud, but think about your gift-making plan and be honest with yourself about your motivation.

Are you making your own gifts for people on your list because they always make gifts for you? Rethink that, and only do it if it’s truly fun for you, and you know the gift recipient will appreciate what you make. A present should be all about the givee, not the giver.

Give thanks and get thanks. Especially if you have little kids in your life and you’re starting in early or mid-November, why not make decorations for the big family gathering on Thanksgiving (which is on the early side this year—November 23). You could start on Veterans Day (November 11), a day off for students and many others.

You could even do this project on Thanksgiving morning with the grandkids—let someone else do the cooking!

Use a net. The Internet and the library are your best friends for finding ideas and videos to make anything you can imagine. Smartphones and tablet computers make this easier than ever. A simple online search for “diy green holiday gifts” or “green thanksgiving decorations” (don’t use quote marks in the search) will give you a good start. Or try Pinterest. The libraries usually have lots of books on these topics, and librarians can help you find them. They may even have a special seasonal section set up for those books.

Think outside the Christmas box. This year, Hanukkah starts the evening of December 12 and ends on December 20th in the evening.

You can make a menorah out of anything (some synagogues even have kids’ competitions for this), and ideas are just a click away.

Play to your strengths. The “play” part is important. Remember tip #1—it needs to be fun, right? What do you love to do? What do you have a knack for? Jewelry-making? Paper crafts? Woodworking?

Making clothing? Cooking? If time does seem limited to make your gifts, definitely pick a specific project you’ve done before. For a first-time project, you may need to make a prototype and you may have some failures, and it can take forever.

Materials come first. Well, almost first, after the idea. And because we’re talking “green” gifts here, it may take you a while to gather materials. Making something out of plastic bottle caps or toilet paper rolls? (Hey, you can make a beautiful reading-glasses case out of a TP roll and a piece of scrap fabric.) Start collecting your materials now! Likewise if you’re going to make gifts repurposing things like sweaters you find at thrift stores. Thrift-shopping for materials always takes longer than you think. Another key to green DIY gifts is using low-toxic paints, markers, etc., and finding those may take a while.

7. Grow your own. If you have a garden, since it’s November the tomatoes are long gone, but you still may have some fresh veggies and likely some herbs that you can use for food or decoration gifts. If you have a rosemary bush or a holly tree, you’re a lucky DIY gift-maker—you can make endless stuff from those. Mint is another super-useful herb, still good now and often very abundant. Interested in having your own garden? Consider signing up for a community garden (Lewis North or McChord) at the NW Adventure Center next spring 8. Make it a party. Make holiday gifts with friends. You could host an informal party, where you all join in to make a food item like pesto that you can freeze. Have your guests bring little plastic containers for the pesto, and everyone takes home several to use as gifts.

9. Embrace the possibilities. If you get good at making your own gifts and really love it, you could do it year-round. Even better, once you’re an expert you could make a little money, or a lot, by selling your creations at craft fairs or on online marketplaces like the Holiday Boutique (near the Thrift Store on Lewis Main) or Etsy.

10. Share the joy. Help others learn about the rewards—and challenges—of making your own green holiday gifts and decorations. Tell your friends. Do a little informal class next year. Send out photos on Facebook. Do a blog posting or make a video showing how you did it. As rewarding as making and giving green gifts can be, helping others learn a new skill might be the best part.
