Winter Weather Tips For Your Home:

With the changing weather, we could experience extreme temperature drops, snow and ice. When this kind of weather hits the Northwest, there is the possibility of pipes freezing and bursting in your home. You can help to prevent this by taking some simple steps. Disconnect all garden hoses from the exterior faucets. Keep your house temperature set at 55 or higher, even if you’re leaving the house for an extended period of time. Do not turn off the heating system, this can cause significant damage in your home due to broken water pipes. Open cabinet doors below sinks to allow heat from the home to circulate in these enclosed spaces. During extended periods of freezing temperatures set your inside faucets on a low drip to circulate water in the pipes and help prevent the lines from freezing.

Ice and Snow:

With snow and ice accumulations typically spanning short periods of time in the Pacific Northwest your Lewis McChord Communities teams will focus on hills, major roads and major intersections in and out of our communities. Lewis McChord Communities does not shovel or lay down ice/snow melt in walkways or driveways around the homes. During these times we ask you to use caution while moving in and around JBLM and other communities surrounding the installation, including major freeways and roadways. Follow the guidance provided by local officials and be safe when making a decision to travel away from your home. HAVE A SAFE WINTER

Fire Hazard Reminders & Tips Fire Hazard Reminders and Tips:

This time of year there can be many potential fire hazards. From the use of portable heaters to Christmas lights, fire places and misuses of extension cords there are increased risks in this season. Be safe by following all the labeling requirements on these types of appliances and accessories. Another line of defense is your smoke detectors inside the homes. All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms. Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order.

*** Tip: A good way to remember batteries is to change them every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time.

Go Lewis-McChord Welcome to GO Lewis-McChord You have probably wondered what the vans driving around Joint Base Lewis-McChord with GO Transit signs on the top are for. What are these GO Transit vehicles doing by every DFAC, gym, and major route on JBLM? GO Transit is a free transit system available to everyone on JBLM that lets you travel the main areas around base. How do you use GO Transit? Find the stop closest to you by visiting the GOLewisMcChord.com website or downloading the free phone app OneBusAway. Use the schedules listed at any of those locations to determine the next time a vehicle is due at that stop. Stand within five feet of the GO Transit stop and the driver will stop, although a little waive is always appreciated, especially in low-visibility situations. When you board, let the driver know what stop you want to go to. If your destination requires a transfer, the driver will communicate with the other vehicles to make sure you easily get onto the next vehicle. In addition to the on-base transportation options this provides, GO Transit also connects with two off-base locations. The 512 Parkand- Ride in Lakewood provides connections with public transportation to Sea-Tac Airport, Seattle, Lakewood Town Center, and Tacoma. The DuPont extension provides access to restaurants and businesses downtown as well as weekday connections with public transportation to Seattle. Consider trying GO Transit on your next trip to the Post Exchange, the gym, or an appointment. You will find it easier than fighting traffic and more convenient than searching for parking! If you have any questions about GO Transit or other GO Lewis-McChord programs, call (253)-966- 3939.

Sustainable JBLM Sustainability is… Managing our resources to support the present installation mission without compromising our ability to accomplish the mission in the future. Supporting strong national defense, the integrity of natural and cultural heritage, and conserving natural resources for tomorrow’s generations

Sustainability Goals JBLM’s Installation Sustainability Program (ISP) is guided by the following long-term sustainability goals:

Air Quality 1) Reduce installation source and non-tactical motor vehicle air emissions 85% by 2025.

Energy 2) Achieve a secured renewable sourced installation by 2040 (Net

Zero Energy).

Sustainable Community 3) Create sustainable neighborhoods for a livable JBLM community that enhances the Puget Sound Region (Net Zero Land).

Products and Materials 4) Achieve a net-zero waste installation by 2020.

Sustainable Training Lands 5) Maintain the ability of JBLM to meet its current and future military missions without compromising the integrity of natural and cultural resources, both on the installation and regionally (Net zero Land). 6) To assist in the recovery of all listed and candidate federal species in the South Puget Sound Region (Net Zero Land).

Water Resources 7) Achieve a secured net-zero water installation by 2020.

Ride Through this Year, Saving Money on Transportation By Meredith Shores, Pierce County Planning & Public Works The top of the New Year Resolutions Lists always include exercising more, eating better, and saving money. By now the glow from the New Year has started to fade, but that doesn’t mean giving up on those January resolutions. Start saving money now by determining what trips you can make without a personal vehicle and go from there! 1. Save money on gas… Even short trips on JBLM burn gas and cost you money. GO Transit provides free rides around JBLM for the entire community. a. Tip: Try checking out a GO Bike from any of five locations around the installation. 2. Save money on parking… The cost of parking in areas of Olympia, Tacoma, and Seattle can add up quickly. Try taking an express bus with Sound Transit or Intercity Transit to avoid the cost of hourly parking. a. Tip: Two hours of parking near Seattle Center costs more than a Sound Transit bus there and back! Sound Transit multi-county fare: $3.75. Intercity Transit express bus fare: $3.00. 3. Save money on wear & tear on your vehicle… The cost of owning a vehicle includes the gas, insurance, and wear and tear on the vehicle. According to AAA, the average cost of driving a personal vehicle in 2017 was 56.46 cents per mile. That really adds up! Do you take trips around the region? Take an express bus with Sound Transit or Intercity Transit. a. Tip: Make your commute more manageable by riding in a vanpool or carpool. Get started by filling out the JBLM vanpool/carpool request form online. b. Don’t forget to explore the Pacific Northwest more this year. You can explore the Pacific Northwest in new ways using public transportation. Challenge yourself to continue saving money throughout the year and put those funds towards something more exciting than gasoline and vehicle maintenance. The less you drive the lower your costs will be, and the best part is that the results are immediate! Facebook.com/golewismcchord will keep you up-to-date on GO program changes and additional ways to save money on transportation this year. Keep in touch!
