How To Reserve A Free Community Center

Did you know that there are 4 community centers at LMC that are available to our current residents? They are located in Eagleview on JBLM North, Discovery Village on JBLM Main, Clarkdale on JBLM Main and McChord on McChord Field. The best part is... They are FREE! Here are the steps to reserving one of our centers.

Visit or call your District Office to see if your center is available on the date you need it. (You are not restricted to using only the Community Center within your District) Pay a 250.00 fully refundable deposit for the facility and sign necessary paperwork. (Your refund is contingent on you returning the center in original condition. Deposits are returned in 48 hours) Enjoy your wedding, birthday party, sport party or any number of events.

These facilities are provided to you at no charge. Please be mindful and treat them with care and return them to the original condition.

KEEP ALL PETS SAFE AND COOL DURING THE WARM MONTHS

Inexpensive Things To Get Out and Do!!!

The weather is warming. The flowers are blooming and nature is begging to have visitors. It is time to turn off the TV and get outside to enjoy what the season has to offer you and your family.

Here are 10 ideas to get you out and about and not break the bank.

1. Visit the Pet Store. Almost as cool as going to the zoo. At least there is more chance of petting a critter at the pet store. Also the local humane society or dog pound is a great place to visit or even help out.

2. Check out your library’s programs. Most libraries have local programs, especially during spring break and months when school is not in session.

3. Have a movie morning. Who needs to wait for movie night? A movie morning is just as awesome. Now you can even swap the popcorn for a big bowl of your favorite cereal.

4. Go on a scavenger hunt walk. Create and print a list of amazing things to locate in nature. Go for a walk and find each thing on your list.

5. Eat a meal al fresco. Whether it’s a picnic lunch in the park or dinner on the back patio, any meal eaten outside is automatically more fun. Plus, when the weather is gorgeous, you want to take advantage of it!

6. Visit a new park. There is nothing better than going for a play and stroll in your local park. Well maybe discovering a new park could be even better. New things to see and do. Maybe even arrange a play date.

7. Visit a bookstore (or the toy aisle at any store). Let the kiddos browse the books and or even new toys. This can pass the time and also give you ideas of what your kiddos are into right now.

8. Find a pond or river. Relax and read or rest near a pond or river. Soak up the sun.

9. Have a family game afternoon or night. Fun Family and Games. Enough Said!

10. Volunteer your time to a good cause or project. You can look on line for many organizations that are looking for volunteers dureing the spring season. Food Banks, Habitat for Humanity, Garden and planting projects and so much more.

Purchasing a Bicycle helmet

training your young cyclist

Head injuries are the leading cause of death in 80 percent of bicycle crashes. To ensure your young rider is off to a good start, provide a properly fitting helmet.

With helmet secured, it’s now time to provide basic bicycle instructions. The first task is learning to stay on the bicycle.

Next, skills such as starting, stopping, turning, signaling and going up and down hills and around curves should be learned. Braking quickly must then be mastered. Young children should demonstrate these basic skills in a safe area before being allowed on public streets. It takes many hours of practice. In fact, children younger than 6 years old need close supervision even when they are permitted to ride on quiet neighborhood streets.

When driving around children on bikes, in the road or on sidewalks, it’s SHARE t h e ROAD good practice to slow down and give them a little extra room for error.

They don’t have the same judgment as adults, so children tend to behave unexpectedly. The same rules apply when driving around adult cyclists.

Motorists should always be on the lookout for bicyclists, and bicyclists should always be cautious when riding near motor vehicles.

Select a helmet approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), as noted on a sticker inside the helmet.

Helmets should sit level and low on the forehead, so you see the front of the helmet when you look up.

If the helmet is slightly large, insert extra padding provided with the helmet and adjust the helmet using the fit ring on the back.

Straps should be adjusted to center the buckle under the chin, with side straps forming a “V” shape under and slightly in front of the ears, and provide a snug fit with only one or two fingers able to fit under the chin strap.

Be a good role model and wear your helmet on every single ride. According to Safe Kids USA, a child who rides with an adult wearing a helmet is more likely to wear one, too.

Ride and work with your child until you are certain he or she is capable of riding on lightly traveled roads. During this time, emphasize the following: Always wear a helmet.

Stop and check for traffic before entering the roadway.

Ride on the right, in the same direction as traffic.

Obey all traffic signs and signals.

Be cautious around parked cars; especially watch for opening doors.

Use appropriate hand signals to communicate your intention to turn or stop.

Learn vehicle rules and regulations.

At last . . . you’ve bought the bike, it’s in perfect condition, the cyclist has been trained and is now capable of riding on the street. Is your job complete?

Not yet! Continue to observe your child’s riding habits and restrict cycling, if necessary. Establish limits or designate specific areas where your child is permitted to ride. Your continued supervision is always necessary.

Remember, it could mean your child’s life.

If a bicycle is going to be operated in low-light conditions, such as inclement weather or after dark, ensure the bike and rider are visible by following these tips:

More than half a million collisions between motor vehicles and bicycles occur in the United States each year.

Many of these incidents are the result of motorists’ failure to properly yield to bicyclists. Motorists need to increase their overall awareness of bicyclists—especially when making turns, and remember to look for bicyclists who are turning or continuing straight. Check for bicyclists riding along the edge of the traffic lane before opening car doors, too. And don’t forget to give bicyclists at least three feet of clearance when passing—more at higher speeds!

Bicyclists should be alert and watch for both turning and parked motor vehicles. Bicyclists should also clearly communicate their intentions to motorists by using proper signals. Using helmets, visible clothing, lights and designated bike lanes and paths are all key factors for increasing safety and ensuring a pleasurable biking adventure.

Remember—we all have places to go—let’s get there safely and respect one another when sharing the road. Contact your local AAA club regarding the availability of bike safety and other traffic safety materials.

The rider should wear bright, reflective clothing A white light should be mounted on the front of the bike A red light should be mounted on the back of the bike so the rider is visible to the rear When possible, children should avoid riding after dark. If your child is out after dark, remind him or her to walk the bike home, and keep away from the street or roadway if possible.

Spring Tips and Resident Reminders Extended Leave or Vacation Away From Your Home...

When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absences Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices.

Before leaving your home, we strongly recommend that you: • Stop mail and newspaper delivery.

• Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. ANIMAL CONTROL WILL TAKE PETS LEFT IN HOME DURING YOUR ABSENCE. • Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computer.

• Lock and secure all doors and windows.

• Turn off water supply line to washing machine.

Gardening and Flower Beds

You may plant vegetables as well as annual plants within your existing flower beds. For more gardening space you may use a raised garden box.

These can be purchased or you may build one. These raised gardens allow you to have the full space of a garden without causing damage to lawn or property.

Avoid a monthly fee of a second trash can by purchasing a one- time use trash bag from Lewis-McChord Communities.

Prepaid trash bags can be purchased from your District Office for $4.93 for those times you have extra trash.

Place the bag next to your trash can and LeMay will pick it up on your normal trash day.

It’s quick and it’s easy!

LMC trash bags can be purchased Mon - Fri, 8am to 4pm. For more information please call or visit your District Office.

Pet Responsibilities

•

Any and all pet(s) and animal(s) approved by Lessor must be kept inside the residence at all times except when on a leash or when securely confined in your fenced backyard, provided the fence is approved by management and is of adequate size and strength to restrain the animal. Pets are not to be tied up and left unattended if there is no fence.

Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet’s waste immediately, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area.

Recreational Vehicles

Recreational vehicles are not allowed to be stored in the Lewis-McChord family housing areas or anywhere on the premises. Your neighborhood manager may issue a 72 hour pass to allow you to bring such vehicles to your home for packing and cleaning. There will be a limit of two (2) such passes issued per month to each resident.

A recreational vehicle is defined as any vehicle that is not designed primarily as a passenger vehicle and includes motor homes, travel trailers (self-contained and pop-up), 5th wheel trailers, campers (mounted on trucks and not mounted), motorboats, sailboats, jet skis, ATVs, any type of trailer and boat trailers of any kind.

Fire Pits and BBQ’s

Only commercially purchased, above ground fire pits are allowed in family housing, must be used at least 15 feet from your home and within your own yard. BBQ Grills Town Center may only use a gas grill on their designated patio. You may use the BBQ area in the Town Center park for charcoal grilling. Meriwether Landing/Westcott Hill communities have a common area BBQ/fire pit area. Once pit is used it needs to be covered when it is completely cooled. All residents are responsible to remove all trash/debris from the area for the next resident use. For all other communities, BBQ grills must be used at least 15 feet from your home to prevent damage to the siding. BBQ grills/fire pits are not to be used under overhangs, eaves in garages or carports. All neighborhoods need to properly store flammable materials, keep a fire extinguisher or water source readily available and supervise all fires by an adult until extinguished.

Installing Air Conditioners in your home...

Air Conditioners are permitted only with prior approval from Lewis-McChord Communities. Lewis-McChord Communities (LMC) residents may purchase (or have purchased) an Air Conditioning unit for their home and are responsible for obtaining the prior approval before installation. Failure to follow this process may result in the removal and repair to the home at the resident’s expense, and potential loss of privileges. All installation and maintenance expenses are the resident’s responsibility. To begin the process and receive instructions/ guidelines and the AC Request Form please email jblmcorder@ lpsi.com or call 253-912-3500 You will be notified your installation is approved by the LMC Service Coordinator Team.

Fire Hazard Reminders and Tips:

During the year there can be many potential fire hazards. From the use of portable heaters to fire places and misuses of extension cords there are increased risks. Be safe by following all the labeling requirements on these types of appliances and accessories. Another line of defense is your smoke detectors. All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms. Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order. *** Tip: A good way to remember batteries is to change them every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time.

Landscaping services are currently included in your rent. On your lawn service day, you will need to ensure that your lawn is free of toys and personal belongings so the mowers can cut your grass. You can have one large non movable item in your yard such as a swing set or trampoline. Please see your District Office for Outdoor Policies. The mowers will cut within two (2) feet of the item. You will be responsible to cut the grass under and the two (2) feet around the item. You may choose to maintain your own lawn if desired. Contact your District Office for a sign to put in your window. If the home you live in has a fence either provided or installed by you, you are responsible for the maintenance of your yard. ***All flowerbeds adjacent to your home are your responsibility to maintain weed-free.

Failure to maintain may result in fines.

What’s in Your Water?

Ever wonder what’s in your water? During 2016 JBLM collected over 1200 water samples and all of them met all Environmental Protection Agency and Washington State Drinking water quality requirements.

Beginning July 1st, 2017 you’ll be able to access the 2016 Consumer Confidence Report. This report contains important information about your source and the quality of your drinking water during 2016, as well as information about water safety, water treatment and monitoring, sources of contaminants, water use efficiency and conservation, and brown water.

It’s Time to GO DuPont

Catherine Hamilton-Wissmer, JBLM Public Works, Environmental Division Maybe you’ve never been to DuPont. Or maybe you go all the time. Now is the time to GO, either way.

GO Transit extended Route 1 out to the City of DuPont earlier this month. It now stops outside of the Best Western Liberty Inn. Do you have friends or family coming into town staying at the Best Western? Now they don’t need a car to visit you on-base. Do you want to take a day trip to Seattle? You can make the connection by crossing the street to the Sound Transit station.

Finally, have you checked out our other GO Transit routes? Look at our system map and see all the places you can go. Our most visited stops right now include the Post Exchange, the 373rd Training Detachment Squadron, the McChord DFAC, the Warrior Zone, and Madigan Army Medical Center. Easily ride to these locations on our four routes and choose from over 80 stops.

PCS & Deployment Season By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer Department of Public Works, Sustainability Outreach Coordinator It’s time for families to PCS and time for units to deploy. What do you do with all that STUFF? The recycling centers on Joint Base Lewis-McChord have the answer: recycle it!

There are two recycle centers, one on Lewis Main and one on McChord Field. Both recycling centers take a variety of things that you need to dispose of prior to moving: those old hard plastic broken toys? Old, rusty BBQ? Unfinished lumber? All recyclable! As well as glass, cardboard, electronics, yard waste, metal, plastic bags, lead acid batteries, toner or ink cartridges.

Donate usable items to one of the JBLM Thrift stores and then when you move into your new neighborhood, shop at the local thrift store. Reduce and Reuse!

Do you have cleaning, home improvement, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden

care, hobbies, or paint to leave behind? Housing residents can take household hazardous waste to bldg. 1210, Environmental Operations during the hours of 1300-1600 Monday –Thurs and 13001500 Friday. Call 253-967- 4786 for more information. They can also answer questions about any hazardous materials that you may have stored. Product labels may include these terms: toxic, ignitable, reactive, or corrosive, caustic, danger, poison, volatile, flammable, warning and caution.

Illegal dumping is against regulation on JBLM. The Pride Week clean up this spring resulted in 63 tons of material being removed from all over the installation. “Do the right thing. Throwing stuff away or in the woods is not the best use of that material,” said Tammy Shoop, JBLM Recycling Outreach Coordinator.

Recycling on JBLM is a great way to make the most of all that stuff.
