How To Reserve A Free Community Center

Lewis-Mcchord Communities Did you know that there are 4 community centers at LMC that are available to our current residents? They are located in Eagleview on JBLM North, Discovery Village on JBLM Main, Clarkdale on JBLM Main and McChord on McChord Field. The best part is... They are FREE! Here are the steps to reserving one of our centers.

Visit or call your District Office to see if your center is available on the date you need it. (You are not restricted to using only the Community Center within your District) Pay a 250.00 fully refundable deposit for the facility and sign necessary paperwork. (Your refund is contingent on you returning the center in original condition. Deposits are returned in 48 hours) Enjoy your wedding, birthday party, sport party or any number of events.

These facilities are provided to you at no charge. Please be mindful and treat them with care and return them to the original condition.

Winter Tips and Resident Reminders Extended Leave or Vacation Away From Your Home...

When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absences Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices.

Before leaving your home, we strongly recommend that you: • Stop mail and newspaper delivery.

• Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. ANIMAL CONTROL WILL TAKE PETS LEFT IN HOME DURING YOUR ABSENCE. • Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computer.

• Lock and secure all doors and windows.

• Turn off water supply line to washing machine.

During winter months: Please see the article Winter Weather Tips For Your Home to learn about protecting your home from frozen and or busted pipes. Most winter damage can be prevented

Holiday Decoration Reminders

Christmas Tree Removal will be the week of January 8 - January 12.

Residents can set Christmas trees out on their regularly scheduled collection day next to their trash tote. Trees must be free of flocking, tinsel, ornaments and metal hangers and cut to 4’ lengths.

Should you miss the pick up dates, you can always check with the JBLM recycling center for drop off.

Pet Responsibilities

•

Any and all pet(s) and animal(s) approved by Lessor must be kept inside the residence at all times except when on a leash or when securely confined in your fenced backyard, provided the fence is approved by management and is of adequate size and strength to restrain the animal. Pets are not to be tied up and left unattended if there is no fence.

Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet’s waste immediately, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area.

Pets and Cold Weather

With the colder weather comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member.

• Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements.

• Make sure your animal has food and water.

• Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme.

Winter Weather Tips For Your Home:

With the changing weather, we could experience extreme temperature drops, snow and ice. When this kind of weather hits the Northwest, there is the possibility of pipes freezing and bursting in your home. You can help to prevent this by taking some simple steps. Disconnect all garden hoses from the exterior faucets. Keep your house temperature set at 55 or higher, even if you’re leaving the house for an extended period of time.

Do not turn off the heating system, this can cause significant damage in your home due to broken water pipes. Open cabinet doors below sinks to allow heat from the home to circulate in these enclosed spaces. During extended periods of freezing temperatures set your inside faucets on a low drip to circulate water in the pipes and help prevent the lines from freezing.

Ice and Snow:

With snow and ice accumulations typically spanning short periods of time in the Pacific Northwest your Lewis McChord Communities teams will focus on hills, major roads and major intersections in and out of our communities. Lewis McChord Communities does not shovel or lay down ice/snow melt in walkways or driveways around the homes.

During these times we ask you to use caution while moving in and around JBLM and other communities surrounding the installation, including major freeways and roadways. Follow the guidance provided by local officials and be safe when making a decision to travel away from your home. HAVE A SAFE WINTER

Fire Hazard Reminders and Tips:

Garbage Pick-up Schedule: Have garbage curbside by 5:30 a.m. on your designated day.

* If your garbage day falls on a holiday it may delay your service by 1 day.

This time of year there can be many potential fire hazards. From the use of portable heaters to Christmas lights, fire places and misuses of extension cords there are increased risks in this season. Be safe by following all the labeling requirements on these types of appliances and accessories.

Another line of defense is your smoke detectors inside the homes. All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms. Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order.

Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order. *** Tip: A good way to remember batteries is to change them every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time.

Welcome to GO Lewis-McChord You have probably wondered what the vans driving around Joint Base Lewis-McChord with GO Transit signs on the top are for. What are these GO Transit vehicles doing by every DFAC, gym, and major route on JBLM? GO Transit is a free transit system available to everyone on JBLM that lets you travel the main areas around base.

How do you use GO Transit? Find the stop closest to you by visiting the GOLewisMcChord.com website or downloading the free phone app OneBusAway. Use the schedules listed at any of those locations to determine the next time a vehicle is due at that stop. Stand within five feet of the GO Transit stop and the driver will stop, although a little waive is always appreciated, especially in low-visibility situations. When you board, let the driver know what stop you want to go to. If your destination requires a transfer, the driver will communicate with the other vehicles to make sure you easily get onto the next vehicle.

In addition to the on-base transportation options this provides, GO Transit also connects with two off-base locations.

The 512 Park-and- Ride in Lakewood provides connections with public transportation to Sea-Tac Airport, Seattle, Lakewood Town Center, and Tacoma. The DuPont extension provides access to restaurants and businesses downtown as well as weekday connections with public transportation to Seattle.

Consider trying GO Transit on your next trip to the Post Exchange, the gym, or an appointment. You will find it easier than fighting traffic and more convenient than searching for parking! If you have any questions about GO Transit or other GO Lewis-McChord programs, call (253)-966- 3939.

Energy Action on JBLM By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer ~ Directorate of Public Works October was “Energy Action Month” and JBLM, grades 1-5, submitted original artwork on the theme “Save Energy and Protect Our Environment”. From the messages in the artwork, children understand the need to save energy and recycle to protect our planet.

This successful contest had a wide range of participation. The artwork was displayed at the Lewis Main Exchange for one week then traveled to the McChord Field Exchange. The contest was jointly sponsored by Directorate of Public Works Energy Program, Army and Air Force Exchange Service and Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Sakhawat Amin, DPW Energy Program Coordinator commented, “It’s another way to get kids involved in saving energy!”

Secure and reliable access to energy, water and land resources is vital for the Department of Defense to perform its mission and to conduct and support global operations. As part of the Army’s Triple Bottom Line Plus of Sustainability; Mission, Community, Environment, and Economic Benefit, having access to energy and water is key to mission success. Energy resilience enables readiness.

Tips to reduce energy waste on JBLM include checking the thermostat and adjusting to proper set points. Turn it down and turn it off.

Keep the doors and windows closed to prevent heating loss. Dress appropriately, wear warm clothing.

The Energy program specifies that if you need a space heater in your JBLM office building, contact your supervisor. If you add one without clearance it could be a fire hazard, or it could overload the fuses!

A few fun riddles: Q. How do energy-conscious people feel about wind power?

A. They’re blown away!

Q. How is energy conservation like a baseball team?

A. They can both use a switch hitter.

Q. How many energy students does it take to change a light bulb?

A. None! They’re smart enough to use energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, which rarely need to be replaced. *** JBLM recycles fluorescent bulbs.
