Welcome Visiting local schools and meeting our teachers and young people is one of the things I’ve enjoyed most since being elected as the new Mayor of Lewisham.

In January, our secondary school results were published and they showed that Lewisham’s GCSE results have improved. In the past few years, more local schools have been sharing best practice and learning from each other.

The Council has been giving support too, through Lewisham Learning and the Secondary Challenge, and it’s great to see that all of this work is starting to pay off.

My message to parents who are thinking ahead to their child’s secondary education, is to go and visit your local Lewisham schools. More and more parents are putting a Lewisham school down as their first choice and I would encourage you to consider joining them.

Flower power returns to Beckenham Place Park Following the success of last year’s flower show at Beckenham Place Park, this vibrant event is set to return on Sunday 30 June.

The show is open to all ages and stages, and welcomes entries from community and collaborative gardens. So if you are feeling inspired and would like to take part, now is the time to get planning and planting, so you’re ready to show off your handy work in the summer.

With 25 categories to choose from – such as the largest sunflower head to the best home-grown, lookalike misshapen vegetable – there’s something to appeal to everyone.

And don’t worry if you haven’t grown plants before or don’t have access to an outdoor space – you can use a pot or seed tray, or opt for one of the craft categories instead.

On the day, there will be an art show, live music, stalls, food, drink – and even a dog show – so there’s plenty to keep you entertained.

Pop the date in your diary and keep an eye on the Council website, social media activity and park notices over the coming months.

Online entries will open from Friday 24 May. Each entry costs £1, and one entry per category, per person, is allowed.

Crackdown on unhealthy food ads Lewisham Council has won a £10,000 grant to explore the idea to ban unhealthy food advertising.

they start reception class, and research shows that their behaviour and food preferences are highly influenced by advertising.

The grant will be used for a pilot study on the best way to prevent

the promotion of high-fat, highsugar and salty foods. The Council is set to be the first to ban such advertising borough wide, in a bid to help shape children’s food choices and reduce obesity.

Secondary schools keep getting better

Positive talks for older people A new face-to-face information and support service, run by a group of older residents, has been set up called Table Talk.

The group will be visiting a number of venues around the borough to offer older people advice, such as how to avoid scams and fuel poverty. They will also tell you about the local events and activities that are available, and help you access different services online.

So whether it’s seated yoga, learning Spanish or joining local campaigns, Table Talk will listen to the kind of things you enjoy and point you in the right direction.

Good news for education in Lewisham, as secondary schools in the borough continue to improve.

According to the latest figures released by the Department for Education, the overall percentage of pupils to score grade 9–5 in English and maths last year (with 9 being the highest grade), rose to 40.7% – an improvement of 2.7%.

The borough has its fair share of star achievers too – out of the 732 students in England to score 9s in all their GCSEs, 13 of those pupils came from Lewisham schools (compared to the national average of 4.8 pupils).

Performance, said: ‘We’re proud of the progress our secondary schools are making. I see fantastic work by our teachers and students. But we know that we all still have a long way to go, and our foot must stay on the accelerator so that all children in Lewisham fulfil their potential.’

Children’s charity Plan International UK reports that one in 10 girls can’t afford to buy menstrual products, which can lead to them missing days at school.

To tackle this issue, The Red Box Project – a community-based, not-for-profit initiative – collects donations of pads, tampons and new underwear to give to young girls in schools for free. It supplies

these products to several secondary schools, primary schools and Youth First youth clubs in the borough.

Updates to Taxicard scheme Handy improvements were made in January to the Taxicard assisted transport service.

The scheme, supported by London Councils, helps people with disabilities and older people who find it difficult to use public transport.

You can book a journey either by phone, online, through the Taxicard app using smartphone or tablet device, by hailing a cab in the street or at a taxi rank.

If you are a Taxicard user, you can now benefit from: a new maximum fare guarantee the choice of a door-to-door or kerb-to-kerb service better ways you can comment about the service you receive, and how your feedback will be addressed.

The Fellowship gets star treatment After a £4 million refurbishment, The Fellowship Inn, in Bellingham, is set to reopen this spring. It will be known as The Fellowship and Star.

This pub and music venue – which, in the past, has hosted music heavyweights such as Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton – will include a cinema, café and theatre. There will also be a music hub and rehearsal space, which will be home to Lewisham Music.

Phoenix Community Housing, which owns the building, wants to see The Fellowship at the heart of

the local community. Its restoration programme includes a range of arts and heritage projects delivered by local arts groups, such as a performance project by Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre, an oral history project around the history of the pub (it dates back to the 1920s), and a community tapestry project.

Financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project will create dozens of new jobs and apprenticeships, as well as volunteering opportunities in the borough. For more information, go to www.phoenixch.org.uk.

International Women’s Day Lewisham is celebrating International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March, at the Civic Suite in Catford.

The all-day event will give you the opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on the role of women and gender equality across the world, through talks, films and 6

spoken word performances, as well as a photo exhibition.

Workshops will cover areas such as sexual health, film making and local democracy – with some workshops being run by young people, for young people.

There will also be stalls offering information on careers and training

opportunities in the construction industry, the campaign to end period poverty, plus the importance of registering to vote.

Council plans to open up empty homes In an effort to tackle the housing crisis, Lewisham Council is cracking down on property owners who have empty homes in the borough. It wants the 370 currently unoccupied properties made available to tenants.

Councillor Paul Bell, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: ‘Ideally, we would like these properties

brought back into use, instead of laying empty while families struggle to find affordable homes in the borough. We will be doing everything possible to bring empty homes back into use.’

From April, if you own a property that has been unoccupied for two years or more, you will be charged double the amount of council tax.

If you have an empty home that needs refurbishing, the Council may be able to help you with some of the costs to bring your property up to standard.

Beckenham Place Park receives a makeover It’s time to get yourself down to Beckenham Place Park. The long-awaited transformation of Lewisham’s biggest and most historic park will be completed this summer.

Thanks to the £4.9 million award from Heritage Lottery Fund’s Parks for People programme in 2016, the park has been completely revitalised.

It now boasts a café and environmental education centre (housed in the restored listed stable block), a children’s play area, extended gardens and a brand-new lake.

The ambitious project also received funding from Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, to help create the stunning lake – which will offer shallow access for paddling, plus a jetty over deeper water if you fancy enjoying a proper dip.

Changing views on mental health A group to help change attitudes and behaviour towards people with mental health issues has been set up in the borough.

The Lewisham Time to Change Organic Hub will use national insights and local knowledge from people who have experience of living with mental ill health. It aims to combat the stigma surrounding this area, and will work with communities and workplaces.

The hub is a partnership between Lewisham Council; Bromley, Lewisham & Greenwich Mind; and NHS Lewisham Clinical Commissioning Group. It’s part of the Time to Change campaign – run by mental health charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. If you are over 18 and personally affected by mental ill health – or care for someone who is – you can volunteer to become a Time to Change champion.

Horniman to boost its music gallery Horniman Museum and Gardens has been awarded £90,000 to upgrade its music gallery.

The money from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and the Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, will be used to transform the gallery – which holds the biggest display of instruments in the UK. Work will start in May to make the gallery more accessible, more engaging to visitors, and open up its collection to new audiences.

Lewisham Live festival celebrates 10 years March marks the 10th anniversary of the highly successful Lewisham Live Festival, which celebrates the music and dance of young talent.

From starting as a one-off arts performance, this annual event has grown over the years, and now attracts around 2,000 children and young people who perform to an impressive audience of 4,000.

Throughout the month, the festival gives unique arts opportunities to young people in the borough to showcase their creativity. And they will get to perform at some of Lewisham’s most prestigious venues, such as Blackheath Halls, the Albany theatre, and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

the Council has ranked the 12th most improved local authority in England for recycling

Let’s talk rubbish!

Fancy the chance of winning a £50 Amazon voucher? If so, Lewisham Council would like to hear from you.

Recycling is the most important thing you can do for the environment, and we should all be doing our bit to recycle as much as possible.

With this in mind, the Council has launched a survey to understand the barriers you may face when disposing of your waste. For example, flytipping cost the borough over £340,000 in the last

financial year. Your views will help shape the rubbish and recycling collection services.

To take part in the survey – and for the chance to win one of five £50 Amazon vouchers – fill in the online survey at consultation.lewisham.gov.uk by 8 April (see website for full terms and conditions).

Our parks top the London league Our parks and open spaces in Lewisham have been rated the best in London in the Good Parks for London Report 2018.

The report reviews how London boroughs maintain their green spaces, and assesses how they are managed across categories like health and wellbeing, supporting nature, sustainability, public satisfaction, community partnerships and events. www.lewisham.gov.uk

Lewisham has 45 parks and 18 nature reserves, as well as adventure playgrounds, allotments and community gardens. The spaces are looked after by Glendale staff, park user groups and members of the local community.

Apprenticeship scheme hits a decade National Apprenticeship Week, from 4–8 March, celebrates the impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the economy. Lewisham Council has run its highly successful apprenticeship programme for 10 years. It’s open to anyone aged 16 or over, who lives in the borough. In this time, the Council has placed nearly 500 apprentices across administration, finance, housing, construction and digital media – with nearly 80% going on to further employment or training after the apprenticeship. Sponsor a tree Here’s a way to make your area become a little greener. Charity Street Trees for Living (formerly the Brockley Society Tree Committee) has raised funds to plant over 600 trees since 2012.

Get ready for the Ultra Low Emission Zone From 8 April, a new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is being introduced in the same area as the existing central London Congestion Charge zone.

When travelling in the zone, vehicles will need to meet the new stricter exhaust emission standards or pay a daily charge of £12.50, in addition to the congestion zone charge. The ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The move is part of the Mayor of London’s plan to discourage the use of the most polluting vehicles and help improve air quality.

From 26 October 2020, lorries and other vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will need to meet even tougher emission standards to avoid the charge.

Extending the zone On 25 October 2021, the zone will be expanded to include all the roads inside (but not including) the North and South Circular roads. This means if you live, work or travel in the borough and drive a vehicle that does not comply with the new standards into the extended zone, you will need to pay the daily charge.

Community developments

Championing parents Lewisham Council’s first-ever parent champions finished their training in December. They were presented with certificates by Councillor Chris Barnham, Cabinet Member for School Performance, at the Civic Suite in Catford. The parent champion programme is a national network developed by charity group Coram Family and Childcare. Volunteers spend a few hours a week helping other parents find out about early years services in the borough. If you would like to become a champion, go to www.lewisham.gov.uk/parentchampions.

Purge on pla Sadly, it is predicted that there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050. It’s time to take a stand and join the revolution to reduce plastic waste…

Teach them good habits young Cutting down on plastic not only means changing our habits today, but also shapes the behaviour of future generations. And it was this idea that led to the creation of My Recycled Classroom, at Beecroft Primary School in Brockley, last September.

The brainchild of early years experts Maddy Yong (pictured below left), Andrea Rose (centre) and Jan Stevens (right), it is an educational sustainability initiative that uses waste materials as learning resources, to teach three-to-fiveyear-olds anything from arts and crafts, to maths and PE. By reusing items such as decking and ecobricks (plastic bottles filled with soft plastics, such as carrier bags), Andrea and her colleagues encourage pupils to see the value in what many might view as rubbish.

Buy zero-waste shoppi The children play an active part in creating intriguing and exciting items from reused materials, rather than simply being told about the benefits of recycling. ‘By engaging with the waste,’ says Andrea, ‘the children somehow become more invested in it – it gains value and we take more responsibility.’

These activities allow for natural conversations to take place about wider issues, such as littering.

And it’s not only the pupils who learn valuable lessons, adds Andrea.

Many pass them on to their parents.

‘It’s lovely to see the skills that we’ve developed in the class, being transferred to the older generation.’

Last October, Alina Yilmaz opened her own grocery shop that’s entirely free of plastic packaging. Most of the stock at Mission Green, in Hither Green Lane, is sold on a refill basis – customers can bring in their own containers to buy anything from grains, pulses and breakfast cereals, to non-animal-tested cleaning products and cosmetics.

What was her motivation behind the business? She had finally had enough of supermarket shopping: ‘When I got my online deliveries, rather than feeling excited, I started to feel a bit depressed at the amount of packaging that came with all the shopping.’

After an unsuccessful search for packaging-free shops in London, and sharing bulk orders of refillable groceries with friends, Alina www.lewisham.gov.uk decided to start up her own

ng eco-friendly business when her husband’s shop became empty.

Since launching, business has boomed. ‘It’s been amazing! There’s been so much support.’

What’s more, Alina’s been able help local residents appreciate how many of the products they buy contain plastics, such as teabags.

‘I found it really surprising because I thought they were compostable, but then I realised how wrong I was,’ she says. As such, Mission Green sells a range of loose tea.

Going forward, Alina has big plans for the shop, with new ranges of vegan food, cleaning products, cosmetics and reusable nappies – as well as running courses on making your own household items using natural products.

‘In 2019,’ she promises, ‘we are www.lewisham.gov.uk going to be bigger and better.’

Bring your own bottle In the UK, around 10,400 water bottles a minute are either landfilled, incinerated or littered.

To help combat this, Lewisham Local (a community collaboration with Lewisham Council) started the Refill London campaign in Lewisham. It encourages local businesses to offer free water refills to people with reusable bottles.

The pilot scheme – initiated by the Mayor of London last year – has successfully signed up 100 businesses in the area.

Sam Hawkesley, development lead for Lewisham Local, says that it was in the wake of David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II, that the community sat up and took notice. ‘There was a real awakening of the public consciousness of where our plastic was going and the negative effect it was having on nature, so we started to get more requests to do something about it.’

Lewisham Local has run four action days, where volunteers hit the local high streets to encourage traders to join up.

There’s next to no cost to companies signing up to the scheme, explains Sam, as each litre of water costs only a fraction of a penny. And there is a big advantage – offering free refills actively attracts more people to come into the shop.

So giving back to the community not only helps reduce single-use plastic for a cleaner environment, it also benefits the business.

According to research by Recycle for London, 87% of Lewisham residents are committed to reducing plastic waste at home – and the good news is the Council’s recycling rates are on the up.

Cracker Jack The Brockley Jack Studio has come a long way since the 1990s. We catch up with artistic director Kate Bannister on the secret of its success

W

hat started as a group of actors, who asked to perform in the function room of the Brockley Jack pub in the early 1990s, has come a long way. Now a highly acclaimed fringe theatre, the Jack Studio has put on over 400 shows in the past 13 years alone – thanks to artistic director Kate Bannister, executive producer Karl Swinyard and their team. Not to mention the countless actors, writers, directors, stage managers and designers. Kate gives us the lowdown on the local art scene, how to survive in the industry and what the future holds for the Jack Studio.

What makes a small theatre so special? ’You’re right up close with the actors, so it’s much more intimate, powerful and engaging. You also see playwrights, actors and directors at the beginning of their careers. They’re just starting off, so you’re part of that. And, of course, it’s much cheaper!

What’s your mission for the Jack?

‘To have the theatre in the heart of the community – with voices as diverse as the people who live in Lewisham.

‘We want to be a stepping stone and a launch pad for new artists. We work hard to support new companies and have won the Off West End’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award four times. We are very well equipped for a fringe theatre, and want to continue to offer this.

‘We’re also accessible in every way – we have wheelchair access and keep our prices low. We showcase a wide range of stories and something from the school syllabus each year to encourage young people to come to the theatre.

We want to be a stepping stone and a launch pad for new artists

Name one of your favourite things about theatre? ’I love that there are still stories being told that aren’t familiar. We’re showing Queen of the Mist this year, which is a true story about a 63-year-old woman who, in 1901, was the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel.

And I thought, ”Wow. I haven’t heard that story before.“ I love that theatre facilitates that kind of storytelling.‘ Any advice for budding actors or writers?

‘Believe in yourself. Find a mentor who understands you, and surround yourself with people who have similar creative visions. See as much theatre as you can. If you don’t like it, consider what you would change.

Think about the work you want to make. If you see a company who does stuff you’re interested in, contact them and tell them. Ask for help, and keep at it!’

BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE We hear from residents and businesses who are enjoying employment and training opportunities through the Lewisham Construction Hub

‘We are looking to expand the business and get more local contacts’ Sisters Natasha and Chelsea McIntosh took up the reins of their Brockley-based family business two years ago. MAC Construction offers a range of refurbishment services, from bathrooms to loft conversions.

They are looking to expand their business with the help of the hub.

‘We come from a family of construction workers. It’s rare to find a construction company fronted by two women.

‘Our clients tend to be quite surprised at how knowledgeable we are in the building field, because they’re used to seeing and talking to a man. But we run the business. We go out together, assess the job, send out quotations, employ the

builders and manage the whole job from start to finish.

‘Last year, we got in contact with the Lewisham Construction Hub via the Council website.

We are looking to expand, move into premises and get more local contracts. We attended one of the business breakfast events, which was really useful to learn about what is out there for businesses like us. We’ve already put our name forward for a contract.

‘We want to be able to secure permanent employment for our builders, who, at the moment, work with us on an as-and-when basis. Having a team of people in our area, that are always there to help us, will make the process so much easier.’

day a week and work in the main site office the rest of the time.

‘As an admin apprentice, I prepare files and paperwork, and sometimes I go on site to do handovers. There are really good opportunities to learn, and I’ve gained lots of new skills in computing and dealing with

‘We’re keen to address the skills gap in the construction sector and raise awareness of scaffolding as a career. I wanted to give people opportunities on our apprenticeship scheme at the Lendlease site in Evelyn Street, Deptford.

‘I met with the team at the hub to discuss what we were looking for. I’ve since done talks there and carried out site tours with some of their candidates, to give them an idea of what scaffolding is like.

‘The hub set up interviews for us with eight candidates from the borough. Two were successful and will soon be employed by us on a CITB apprenticeship scheme.

‘I definitely think the team down at the hub are one of the best to work with in terms of being proactive. It can be hard for employers to find candidates themselves without a platform like the hub, which does a lot of the work for you in the background.

The fact that they specialise in construction means that they already have the experience of dealing with the sector.’

‘I’ve built great relationships and become more knowledgeable’ Former computer operator Tony Ellie, 47, wanted to retrain in an industry with more opportunities.

He got in touch with the hub and secured an electrical installation apprenticeship with K-10.

‘Since last summer, I’ve been based at the Anthology Deptford Foundry site. I learn something new every month and tasks can vary – from installing lamps in preparation for a tester to come in and check circuits, to installing fire pads behind double sockets.

There’s always lots to do.

‘After my apprenticeship, I’d like to stay with Sisk, as I really like working in construction. I’d say to anyone looking for an apprenticeship to just go for it, because it teaches you a lot about working life.’

‘I’m working towards my NVQ and, when I’m fully qualified with an AM2, there’ll be many different options available to me. I’m pretty motivated and, since being here, I’ve built some great relationships.

‘The Lewisham Construction Hub is a good guide for people and can point you in the right direction.

A lot of people are unsure about what they need to do to get trained or qualified in a trade. I wasn’t clear on the process of becoming qualified until I started my course and became more knowledgeable.’

Take advantage of your free NHS Health Check for a positive step towards a happier, healthier new you

M

ake 2019 the year you get your health in check. If you are aged 40–74 and don’t have a pre-existing condition, you are eligible to have a free health check. The test is designed to spot early signs of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. So it’s a reassuring way to know if you are on the right track, or whether you should make changes to your current lifestyle.

Practice nurse Chrissy Dunbar works at the Jenner Practice in Forest Hill, where she carries out up to 20 health checks a week.

‘There’s often a misconception about what the health check covers,’ explains Chrissy. ‘There’s an expectation that it’s a full MOT – but it is actually a cardiovascular risk assessment.’

The test looks at the risk of heart attack or stroke over a 10-year period, as well as type 2 diabetes.

How does it work?

‘We do a fingertip blood sample for the cholesterol check, which takes five minutes. Some patients will also be offered a test for diabetes.

If it suggests they might be in the diabetic range, then we would refer them to their GP.’ Chrissy says type 2 diabetes is usually lifestyle related: ‘If patients are found to be at high risk of 20

type 2 diabetes, we refer them to Healthier You, a free nine-month diabetes prevention programme.’

Getting your results After the data is collated, Chrissy talks through the results with her patients and highlights their risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and dementia. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

‘We assess their lifestyle and what changes they can make to become healthier,’ says Chrissy.

‘We can refer patients to local support groups to advise on losing weight, such as 12 weeks of free Weight Watchers or Slimming

World sessions, or put them in touch with a dietician.’

Patients are encouraged to get more active, by gradually increasing their physical activity, such as taking up swimming and walking.

And smokers are pointed in the right direction to the NHS Stop Smoking Service, which offers advice and support to quit.

Positive future Chrissy believes the tests are really beneficial and encourages patients to come back every five years.

She would like to see more patients make health their priority: ‘I help people to be motivated and find them a realistic picture of what they can change, providing them with support.’ www.lewisham.gov.uk

Changing your lifestyle could transform your life Mike Kretsis, 56, is a university lecturer living in Forest Hill. He discovered he had type 2 diabetes during an NHS Health Check. As a result, he has made some major lifestyle changes.

What prompted you to go for an NHS Health Check?

from work, eat large portions and have a couple of beers most nights. I’ve now drastically cut down on cakes, biscuits and snacks, as well as cheese. I eat porridge five or six times a week and I’ve stopped drinking alcohol.

I try to eat fruit containing less natural sugar. I also have quite a lot of pulses, seeds, nuts, oily fish and plenty of vegetables.

Adjusting my diet wasn’t the torture I expected! I’m also much more active now – jogging, cycling, swimming, and walking to the station on a regular basis.’

‘I got a letter from my surgery in summer 2017, encouraging me to book a check because of my age. I ignored the previous ones because I was too busy. I had my first appointment with a practice nurse in the September.’

What did you find out?

‘It was lucky I went when I did, as I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I knew I was overweight, not doing enough exercise and stressed out, partly by work. What I didn’t know was that my blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar level, weight and BMI (body mass index, which calculates if you are a healthy weight) were all too high.’

What advice were you given?

‘I had a follow-up with a doctor. I asked her to give me three months to turn things around. She referred me to Lewisham hospital for an ECG. She suggested a one-day diabetes workshop which gave me practical diet advice – some of which I knew and some I didn’t.

I also had my eyes checked twice for damage related to the diabetes. I have a machine at

What steps did you take?

‘I radically changed my lifestyle. I used to eat a lot of refined sugar, lots of salty foods and too much saturated fat. I’d come home late

What effect did it have?

‘By December 2017, I’d got my cholesterol, weight and blood sugar down to a normal level and I’d lost almost three stone. My blood pressure is still high, but I’m working on it. The diabetes is officially in remission now. I need to maintain my lifestyle changes so that it doesn’t return.’

Any advice you can give?

‘I would encourage everyone to attend their health checks.

Don’t make the mistake that I did.

I had no idea of the extent of my problems. I’ve learnt my lesson!’

Book your free health check now The NHS Health Check is for people aged 40-74, who do not have a pre-existing condition and are not already taking medication for blood pressure or cholesterol.

You can have the check every five years, and you should receive a letter from your GP. The test looks at your cholesterol, blood pressure, height, weight and lifestyle, including diet, smoking, alcohol and exercise.
