It means an opportunity for you to build upon the successes from this past year or even those of years past or perhaps a chance to fulfill a resolution to yourself, the choice is yours.

From Workplace Health Hazards and an Introduction to Occupational Safety & Health to Flagger and CPR certification and Emergency Planning, we have safety courses tailor– made to meet your needs.

An exciting new development for business and industry is that the College will now offer the same contractor programs as the world–famous Houston Area Safety Council. As a satellite location for them, we are beginning to schedule The Basic Orientation Plus® and The Basic Refresher® for ARSC reciprocity with various plants and manufacturing sites. If you are in the skilled trades and construction arena, please call (618) 468–5787 for more information.

And finally, please keep in mind that our department can custom create or deliver any course for your work group, at your location or ours, exactly when you require. So if you don’t see it listed, please call us – one catalog isn’t big enough to cover all the supervisory, team building and other types of programs in our curriculum.

This class is designed to provide the basic training needed to weld safely and effectively in a non–professional setting. Participants will be introduced to the most common forms of arc welding and welding terminology with the primary focus on wire–feed welding.

Card Making Basics

Join us for the latest craze in art entertainment! Come alone, with your date or grab a group of friends and enjoy a couple of hours of art and cocktails. Don’t think you can paint? No worries! Our instructor will guide you through recreating the featured project and you’ll have a masterpiece before you know it. Step–by–step instructions will be given and no prior painting experience is required. Sit back, sip and paint on a canvas while talking to your friends and listening to music. All painting supplies are included in the course fee, along with unlimited soda, beer and wine. No outside beverages are permitted.

Come and explore the art of card making!

In this hands–on workshop, you will learn the basics of layering cardstock to create dimension, coordinating colors and inks and embellishing handmade cards sure to impress the recipient. Active Retirement Social Security: Getting the Most

Have you ever wondered when the best time to start your Social Security benefit could be?

This informational workshop is designed to guide you through various strategies on how to help maximize your Social Security benefit. Hand Drumming for the Non–Musician

Communal drumming provides the opportunity to express your mind and your spirit and celebrate ourselves, our gifts and our strengths. This class is designed for the non–drummer/musician (although musicians are very welcome). You will learn about, and play a variety of ethnic drums and instruments. The most important thing we will do is have fun! Drums and percussion instruments will be provided, however you are welcome to bring your own hand–drum if you have one. Successful Communication with Aging Parents

Dealing with your own adult world can be difficult enough without bringing in the dynamics of your oldest, and sometimes most sensitive relationships – your parents.

Some of the most emotional and troubling issues that you will face in your adult life will be dealing with your parents as adult peers.

Examining communication dynamics and life patterns will allow you a deeper and richer relationship with your parents. Look into your current relationship, reflect on lifelong communication patterns and explore how to change patterns that are not delivering the results that you desire. During each session you will receive communication tools to use. When you come back for the second and third sessions you will assess what has worked. Modifications will be made based on your feedback, so you can begin to develop the ability of changing your relationship(s) with your parent(s).

In The Kitchen Chocolate Candy Creations

Mom & Me

Spend some quality time with your mom and have lots of fun learning cake decorating techniques together. Led by baker Michelle Davenport of Sweet Indulgences, you will learn different decorating techniques that will transform your cake into a work of art! Your mom will have a tasty treasure to take home at the end of the night. All materials and supplies are included in the course fee. This class is for all ages. One guest allowed for every registered student.

Learn how to make beautiful and delicious chocolate candy treats for family and friends just in time for Valentine’s Day! Participants will learn the proper temperatures for chocolate handling and create a variety of candies using molds and other techniques.

Each attendee will take home an assortment of suckers, turtles, dipped treats, barks, peanut clusters and chocolate covered pretzel rods. All supplies are included in the course fee.

Digital Photography Photography Essentials

Mike Nichols After earning his bachelor’s degree in business from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1971, Mike Nichols went on to earn his Master Photographer degree in 1995. He received his Photographic Craftsman degree in 2003, the highest earned recognition awarded by the Professional Photographers of America. For more than two decades, Mike’s entries in statewide competition have won numerous Par Excellence Awards in the portrait and wedding categories, with his most recent entry being judged one of the top wedding albums in the state. Mike’s images have also been recognized by the Judge’s Choice Award and selected for the prestigious PPA Loan and APPI Loan Collections. His work has appeared in many professional publications. He is also a popular speaker at professional photography conventions. In 2005, Mike was selected as one of the “Top Ten” photographers in the state of Illinois. He owns Nichols Photography in Glen Carbon and has been in business since 1982.

So you’ve got a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera, now what? Are your images too dark, too light, or too blurry? Help is here! In this workshop, Master Photographer Mike Nichols will demystify the aspects of your digital camera. Subjects covered include ISO settings, aperture, shutter speed, lens choices, lighting issues, and archiving. You will need your camera, owner’s manual, and a USB jump drive.

Students should be familiar with the locations of their camera settings within the menu.

Through voluntary participation in practice sessions you will have the opportunity to learn from images that fall short of your expectations. Come explore how your camera can give you the images you’ve always wanted.

Recreation Easy Riders

Never ridden a horse? Used to ride years ago and need a riding refresher? Come join the Easy Riders class for adults! In this 4 week class, learn how to be more comfortable and safe around horses while learning how to ride with style and confidence. Riders may choose either an English or Western style saddle. Lesson horses are well–trained and kind–hearted.

Riders will be contacted by the instructor prior to the start date to discuss class requirements. (Class size is limited to maximize one–on–one instruction.)

As a thank you to our loyal swim customers, we’ve lowered prices on all swim classes this spring!

Jump into the easy–to–follow, calorie– burning, dance fitness party that makes working out a splash. Designed for both swimmers and non–swimmers, this aquatic exercise class is held in the shallow end of the pool. Health & Fitness Progressive Yoga

Yoga relieves stress, increases vitality and stamina, and unites body, mind and spirit.

This course emphasizes a system of yoga postures, requiring physical and mental discipline designed to increase strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, and focus.

Yogalates

Yogalates is a mind/body class for people who can’t hold still! An alternative to traditional yoga and Pilates, this format is ideal for those who find traditional yoga and Pilates intimidating or restrictive. This hybrid workout combines mind/body practices, as well as principles of sport stretch, strength training and dynamic movement to improve strength, flexibility, balance, core stability, and reduce stress while constantly flowing from one exercise to the next. Previous yoga or Pilates experience is helpful, but not necessary. [Offered concurrently with PHED 176 Yogalates.]

Hand Drumming for the Non–Musician

Using group instruction, students will develop basic skills and techniques of playing the guitar. No previous playing experience is necessary. Students must provide an acoustic (non–electric) guitar.

Communal drumming provides the opportunity to express your mind and your spirit and celebrate ourselves, our gifts and our strengths. This class is designed for the non–drummer/musician (although musicians are very welcome). You will learn about, and play a variety of ethnic drums and instruments. The most important thing we will do is have fun! Drums and percussion instruments will be provided, however you are welcome to bring your own hand–drum if you have one. For kids

For young singers, there is no better place to start than in the Riverbend Children’s Chorus. Barbara McHugh provides students in grades 1–8 with vocal instruction through an unforgettable choral experience. For young pianists, KinderKeys is a four–week group experience which will help parents determine their child’s readiness for private instruction. It’s a great way to gain confidence and skills.

For adults

If you love to sing, there’s a chair waiting for you in the Concert Choir. This group performs everything from Bach to Broadway! Instrumentalists may want to sign up for the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band or even audition for a seat in the Alton Symphony Orchestra. You may want to develop your talent as a composer in other non–credit music classes for adults such as Electronic Music Production or Sequencing and Recording.

For everyone!

Private instruction is available for children and adults at all levels of ability in voice and on most instruments. All instructors hold college degrees; more than two thirds have earned master’s or doctoral degrees. It’s never too late to learn! Instrumental instruction is available for piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, string bass, guitar, horns, tuba, trombone, trumpet, flute, piccolo, clarinet, sax, oboe and percussion. Vocal instruction is available for singers age 13 and up with younger students considered on a case by case basis.

This class promotes water adjustment, not necessarily swimming, for babies and toddlers 6 to 18 months old. A parent or other responsible adult must be present and in the water at all times during the class.

Classes are taught by Red Cross certified water safety instructors. Children should wear swim diapers or snug training pants under their swimsuits.

Learn water safety, personal safety, physical and mental adjustments to the water, buoyancy, body position and basic water skills such as front and back floating, with a goal of coordinating a beginning crawl and elementary back stroke. Children will be skill tested on the first day of class to determine which level they are in.

A wide variety of skills will be learned and as they progress through the levels, new skills are learned and old ones are refined.

Classes are taught by Red Cross certified water safety instructors.

The objective of level 6 is to refine strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 has also been revamped to include several components such as Personal Water Safety, Fundamentals of Diving, Fitness Swimming, and Lifeguard Readiness. Recreation Little Stirrups For ages 4 & up

Young riders will learn about the wonderful world of horses in this beginning riding class for parents and kids. Parent/child teams will experience everything from the feel of a horse’s fuzzy muzzle to the giggles of excitement during your child’s first trotting steps in the saddle. Kids will learn how to brush their horse, put the saddle on its back, and tell it how to stop, go and turn in the very first class. Rocky Branch horses are generous, patient and sweet–natured.

Riders will demonstrate their new skills for family and friends on the last day and be presented with a rosette ribbon. Young riders must be accompanied by an adult who will participate in each class by helping to brush, saddle up and lead the horse while their child is riding.

The Rocky Branch Saddle Club’s 10–level program takes riders from beginner to accomplished equestrian. Each level is a set of building blocks combining riding skills and horse care knowledge such as how much oats to feed a horse, the difference between hay and straw, and how to clean a horse’s hooves. Riding activities include playing games on horseback, riding bareback, navigating hills and bridges and a life–size riding maze. Saddle Club riders will learn to ride both English and Western styles with confidence. Merit pins are awarded at each level; riders who complete all 10 levels will graduate as an assistant riding instructor.

Special activities include arts and crafts, demonstrations from a professional horse trainer, and assisting a veterinarian or horse– shoer. Saddle Club incorporates the riding handbook “Happy Horsemanship” (available for purchase along with club jackets and riding helmets).

Food Service Sanitation Review

This review course will highlight the importance of sanitation in relation to food preparation. Training topics emphasized include safe food environments, pest control and local, state and federal codes. Required textbook will be loaned to participants for the duration of the course and must be returned upon completion. Prerequisite: Participants must provide proof of current food service certificate.

All classes must be paid for at the time of enrollment.

Withdrawal/Refund

For classes that meet four or more times, you may withdraw before the start of the second session in order to receive a refund.

There are no refunds for classes that meet three or fewer times once the class has begun. To withdraw, call the Enrollment Center at (618) 468–7000.

Each class also has a minimum required enrollment. If this minimum is not met prior to a class starting, the class will be canceled and enrollment fees returned.

For Kids Classes Only Preparing for Class

Children should attend class dressed appropriately for the weather or to suit the program. Art and science classes may be messy! Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to class; water is always available for refilling. Students attending an all–day class should bring a sack lunch and drink.

Safety

Parents or guardians are responsible for transporting children to and from Lewis and Clark Community College. They should be dropped off no more than 10 minutes before a class begins and picked up promptly at the classroom no earlier than 10 minutes before a class ends. Children are not to be left unattended on campus.
