Annual Report Fiscal Year 2008 July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008

MISSION The Foundation complements and supports Lewis and Clark Community College by providing scholarships, awards, and other assistance that is funded through endowments, individual and corporate gifts, partnerships, and fund-raising activities.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION The Foundation serves as the development office, holds, invests and manages the College endowment, and serves as the office for two alumni constituencies – Lewis and Clark Community College and Monticello College.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR (July 2007 – June 2008) • Lewis and Clark Community College has joined a select group of colleges, universities and conservatories throughout the world who have earned the “All Steinway” designation. There are currently fewer than 100 All Steinway Schools in the world, including some of the world’s most prestigious universities and schools of music such as Yale University and Juilliard. Lewis and Clark is only the third community college in the nation to receive the designation.

• The College ranked 11th in the nation in granting degrees in Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies, and was named one of the Top 100 One-Year Certificate producing schools in the United States by Community College Week magazine. According to the surveys published by the magazine, Lewis and Clark earned the 11th spot nationally in providing 289 Multi/Interdisciplinary (Associate in Science) Degrees in the 2006-2007 academic year (the survey period), and ranked in the 100th in providing one-year certificates.

• A new Workforce Training Center will be constructed in the Wood River/Hartford area as a result of a $1 million gift to the Foundation.

• Lewis and Clark continues to be one of the most successful community colleges in Illinois in controlling its unit cost. A college’s unit cost is the dollar amount of funds used to provide a unit of instruction.

• The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center Field Station is on schedule to open in late fall of 2009. The college marked the official launch of construction of the green building in April, 2008.

• Credit students and the number of hours they are taking continue to grow each semester at Lewis and Clark Community College. The College has the longest continuous growth trend in the state.

• Students in the Dental Hygiene and Occupational Therapy Assistant programs, who took their board certification tests in late 2007, received a 100 percent pass rate on their national licensing exams.

• A new sculpture by renowned artist Deborah Butterfield will be placed on campus thanks to a donation of bronze by Olin Brass.

• The United States Tennis Association’s Men’s Futures Pro Circuit Tennis Tournament will return to the Andy Simpson Tennis Complex again this summer. The annual tennis tournament welcomes tennis’ future stars from all around the world for the $10,000 tournament.

• Collage 2007 “Botanica” was once again very successful, raising over $60,000 and allowing $30,000 to be transferred to the Quasi Endowment fund.

• The N.O. Nelson Campus renovation was completed with the dedication of the Jay Hoffman Center, and preliminary landscaping has been completed. The Leclaire Room has become a major event location with activities taking place on most weekends.

• New transfer programs with the University of Illinois are allowing students to earn a degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Horticulture, Architecture, and Landscape Architecture.

From the President: I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have so generously contributed to the Foundation in the past year. Support comes in many forms; financial contributions, volunteer work, and the selfless dedication of time and talent to Foundation activities by staff, board members, and others. The combined effect of this support is the empowerment of individuals to reach higher levels of personal and professional achievement. Your contributions to student scholarships, the Annual Fund, the Endowment Fund and fund-raising events, will make it possible for many students to fulfill their dreams.

As evidenced by the Highlights of the Year, fiscal Year 2008 has been another record year. Achieving such ranks as 11th in the nation in granting Multi/Interdisciplinary degrees, and being named one of the Top 100 one-year certificate producing schools, as well as being one of fewer than 100 “All Steinway Schools” in the world, are amazing accomplishments.

The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center Field Station, along with the renovation of the N. O. Nelson campus in Edwardsville, contribute to the community by providing class rooms and community activity venues. The fact that the College has the longest continuous growth trend in the state is by far an accomplishment in itself.

The annual Collage Auction, “Botanica”, held in November, 2007, was very successful. Along with the Annual Golf Classic held in June 2008, these two events raised in excess of $100,000. The proceeds from these two will be used to fund the Distinguished Scholar Awards to students in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class, as well as athletic scholarships and college athletics in general.

As usual, we are looking forward to further projects and opportunities, including beautification of the campuses, transfer programs as mentioned in the Highlights, and further achievement by the allied health programs, as well as all programs offered by the College.

I look forward to continuing to serve Lewis and Clark Community College and its students; past, present, and future. I hope I have the opportunity to see those of you who have so generously contributed to our scholarships, awards, and other support programs in the coming year so that I can personally thank you for your support.

WAYS TO GIVE CASH AND CASH PLEDGES Most contributions given to the Lewis and Clark Foundation are gifts of cash. We accept personal and business checks and money orders. Gifts of cash could allow you to have a deduction of up to 50% of your adjusted gross income.

SECURITIES The L&C Foundation accepts gifts of securities (stocks and bonds). If you donate this type of gift that has increased in value and that you have held more than 12 months, you can avoid capital gains tax on the property transfer. Generally, these gifts are tax deductible at the full, fair market value of the stock.

With the recent changes in the stock market, you may hold stock that has decreased in value. Consider selling the stock yourself and taking a tax-deductible loss. The cash proceeds can then be given to the L&C Foundation with a charitable gift tax deduction.

We will provide you with stock transfer settlement instructions to give to your broker or agent.

INSURANCE Gifts of life insurance are an easy way to provide potentially large gifts for a smaller investment. The L&C Foundation accepts paid-up policies as gifts when we are named as owner and beneficiary. This is required for you to receive a charitable gift deduction. It is also possible for you to make premium payments to us that qualify for tax deductions.

ESTATE PLANNED GIFTS Through a will or a living trust you can make a gift that will give you lifetime control of the assets and then make a difference for a student and Lewis and Clark after your death. Gifts through estate planning can create a legacy in honor of you, your family, your business or anyone special in your life.
