LEWESTON LIGHT! Despite it being a time of separation, the Summer Term was full of impressive achievements and brilliant events.

Leweston Light is a roundup of life at Leweston Prep this term.

TERM 2020

Miss Robinson, Art and Design Teacher, worked hard making sets of scrubs for The Yeatman Hospital and was made a Team Leader coordinating other local sewers.

Meanwhile, Arthur R, Year 3, and his family were very busy helping to make PPE visors for local healthcare providers!

Thank you to them all for putting their hard work and time into supporting our fantastic key workers.

Radio Play Drama Club

Radio Play Drama Club took place every Tuesday as part of the Virtual Summer Activities on offer in the Prep. Pupils in Years 3 to 6 performed 'Macbeth in Seventeen and a Half Minutes or Less' by Christine Harvey and 'Charlotte Holmes - Future Detective' by Richard James.

e h t d n u o r A ' e g n e l l a h C ' World' Following a wonderful idea put forward by Jack in Year 5 (pictured top right), the Prep community embarked on a challenge to circumnavigate the globe (25000 miles!) during lockdown. Before settling down for bed each night the pupils and staff made a note of how many miles they ran, walked, scooted or cycled that day during their daily exercise.

Their superb efforts gained the attention of some household names, including football manager and former player - Harry Redknapp, British triathlete - Alistair Brownlee MBE, and former Rugby player - Johnny Wilkinson, who all sent in words of encouragement!

Mrs Smith, Head of Prep PE and Games said "I am extremely proud of Jack for coming up with the idea. He has inspired so many pupils and staff to both get on board and continue to work hard towards reaching our goal. We still have a long way to go, but we will complete our journey back to Dorset over the summer holidays in time for a well-earned rest before we can hopefully all be together again in September."

We received so many amazing drawings, videos, emails and cards from our pupils on 'National Thank A Teacher Day.' An opportunity to celebrate our phenomenal Prep and Nursery teachers! It was fantastic to see all of their hard work celebrated and appreciated.

d n a s Club ties i v i t c A

At Leweston we understand that life outside of the classroom is just as important as the world within it. We take every opportunity to build on academic activities and bring learning to life.

This can be seen in the extensive programme of clubs and activities we offer to all ages. This term 16 virtual activities were available, one of which was Gardening Club.

Club members got involved in a range of activities including: planting tomatoes, sunflowers and potatoes, making bird and butterfly feeders, building wormeries, and vegetable vehicles. The children were enthusiastic throughout, and we think the parents may have enjoyed it too as they were always keen to join in, which was great!

Other clubs on offer included Yoga, Radio Drama Play, Origami, Still Life Drawing and Lego Construction Club!

Year 3 make kites As part of their Art Topic, Year 3 made their own kites from scratch taking them outside to see how well their creations could fly!

e g n e l l a h C S H N Fabulous effort from Harvey, Year 3, who completed the NHS Challenge and ran an amazing 50k in 3 weeks!

Huge congratulations and well done for helping our NHS Heroes!

Year 4 Upcycle!

As part of their creative work, Year 4 were challenged to create a dinosaur out of a plastic milk bottle. We were really impressed by this one by Aaron M - it looks almost real!

e c n e i c S s w o b n i Ra In Science Year 5 made salt rainbows with Mr Ainsworth. The pupils created the rainbow in card and then added a salt solution on top of their artwork.

They were amazed to see the water evaporate and the salt creep up the rainbow. Mr Ainsworth then asked them to investigate ways in which they could improve their rainbow by experimenting with other materials such as Epsom salts or colours.

Year 5 produced some impressive pieces of persuasive writing in their English lessons this term. The pupils have been reading 'Journey to the River Sea' as

part of their 'Rivers' topic. The children were asked to create information leaflets about the house from the story called 'Westwood'.

Year 5 were set the task of making togas from materials at home. They had lots of fun dressing up in their creations and taking part in various Greek inspired activities including a scavenger hunt, a virtual tour, bingo and Greek songs!

Students created some beautiful Flags of Hope as a sign of our shared strength and solidarity during the remote learning period.

We asked our Reception children 'What do we know about coronavirus?' and these were just some of their brilliant responses.

We were delighted to be able to welcome back Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 to the school campus for the end of the term and had lots of fun out in the sun in our social bubbles!

All of our year groups were then able to have some in-school sessions before the end of term. A great opportunity to see old and new friends.

Our pupils and their families had a brilliant time taking part in a range of virtual Sports Day activities at the end of term. Congratulations to the winner of the House Cup, St Antony!

s r e v a e L 6 r a e Y & y a D Speech At the end of the term we hosted our first virtual Speech Day. It was a fantastic opportunity to look back on all the hard work and memories made over the academic year.

We also wished our Year 6 leavers the best of luck for the next stage of their journey.

o t d l r o W e h t l e v a r T n o i t p e c e R ! s r a e B Visit In line with their topic 'Teddy Bears' Picnic', Reception Class virtually travelled the world to visit some actual bears. The children met polar bears in Canada, grizzly bears in America and pandas in China!

After each visit, the children had the opportunity to discuss and write down what the bears were like using a range of adjectives, and also describe how meeting the bears made them feel.

The children loved the experience; laughing at the polar bear, squealing and hiding their eyes at the grizzly, and giggling and "awww"ing whilst hugging themselves when watching the baby pandas!

The polar bear was curious and cheeky when he tried to dig up the camera pole.

The grizzly bear was scary and noisy when he roared.

The baby pandas were playful and naughty when they tried to get into the leaf basket.

At the end of the term Leweston was thrilled to be shortlisted for the Independent Schools of the Year Sporting Achievement Award.

To be shortlisted Leweston had to demonstrate to the judges the impact that sport has on students throughout the school through the breadth of opportunity and participation, as well as the competitive achievements of its students. The judges are looking for evidence that a clear philosophy underpins the provision of sporting experience at the school and evidence of original thinking in the school’s approach to its sporting programme.

Director of Sport, Mrs Guy, said "We are delighted to have been short listed for this award particularly because this award recognises the enthusiasm of all our pupils for sport and physical activity and their willingness to get involved and try new things.

Throughout lockdown the Leweston community has continued to demonstrate this spirit.

Pupils, staff and parents have contributed to the Daily Physical Challenges, raised money with sponsored activities, and continued with their training through online PE lessons and sessions. Some have even competed in online events winning medals in virtual competitions!

Our Pentathlon athletes are in full training, including open water swimming at Weymouth and our Equestrian Team are back in the saddle preparing for competitions. Leweston's first Virtual Sports Day was a very fitting way to end the term for a community that is so committed to an active, healthy lifestyle and who have such a strong sense of team spirit!"
