Our experience in Nepal Our trip started with a 5am start on the last Wednesday before half term, which may have seemed early at the time but compared to some of our early mornings on the trek feels like a lie in! We boarded our plane from Heathrow to Turkey and then a second flight to Kathmandu! Having finally arrived we spent a very tiring day in Kathmandu before heading off to the school the next morning. As many of you know Janna Jyoti, our sister school, supported by the money we raise in the tuck shop here, is located in Nepal. Once we arrived Bill, the headmaster of Jana Jyoti, showed us around before we set up camp and went to bed. During our next 3 days at the school we played football and cricket with the school children (which they thrashed us at every time!), helped in the school’s English classes and turned our hand at manual labour as we aided in some of the building work at the school. Moreover, we also attended a welcome ceremony to celebrate our arrival where the children gave numerous beautiful dances and gifted us with stunning garlands and pashminas. We also took a trek to Ashish’s house, an ex- Janna Jyoti pupil who we are currently funding through his course of engineering at Pokhara university from the money raised at the tuck shop. It was such a humbling experience to see how grateful he and his family were for Leweston’s support. After having spent three amazing days at the school it was time to head to Pokhara, a beautiful city situated near Annapurna’s base camp, and start our trek. We spent an incredible day in Pokhara where we rowed across its stunning lake and then walked up so many steps to visit the UNESCO world peace pagoda. After having walked around this beautiful temple we headed back to Pokhara for a well earnt lunch and an afternoon of shopping. The next day we got up early and headed off on the first day of our trek. Whilst on the five day trek we experienced such beautiful scenery, delicious cooking, thanks to our amazing chef Dawa, and multiple (far too competitive) games of Uno. One morning we got up at 4 am to watch the sunrise from a view point across the Annapurna range. However, after 4 nights we were all very excited to get back to a hotel room in Pokhara, and after having much needed showers we went out for supper to enjoy a Nepalese celebration of Divali. The next day we travelled back to Kathmandu from Pokhara stopping half way for lunch and white-water rafting. We spent our final day in Kathmandu exploring the city, which was a lot more enjoyable when we weren’t jet lagged and running off of zero hours sleep! We went out for lunch in Kathmandu’s stunning city garden café before shopping and enjoying a delicious supper, followed by catching multiple rickshaws back to the hotel! It was such fun to experience a Hindu country over the celebration period of Diwali. We woke up on Thursday morning sad to be leaving Nepal but excited to get back home! After 2 very long plane journeys back where we watched a new record of films, we finally made it back to England!
