Music holds a special place at Leweston and it was great that we were still able to host our Summer Concert this term. The event was held virtually and enjoyed by the school on a dedicated 'Music Day'. Visit the News page on our website to watch the performances from students and staff!
On 30 June, Leweston made history hosting its first Virtual Sports Day. A twist on the traditional event, pupils completed activities at home submitting their scores at the end of the day. The event started with a fantastic Opening Ceremony which featured messages from Heads of House, the Sport Prefect and very special words of encouragement from the World Number 1 Female Rower and Olympic Champion, Helen Glover!
The jam-packed event was brought to a close in a Closing Ceremony with another special message from Bath Rugby's Max Clark. Although we were sad not to be together, the day's schedule was full to the brim with fun physical activities and was enjoyed by all who participated! Students described the event as 'unique', 'fun', 'creative' and 'exciting'.
YEAR 7 BIOLOGISTS EXPLORE THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM! Our Year 7 Biologists studied the Digestive System this term and how nutrients from our food are absorbed into the body. This involved a home based experiment where students mimicked the action and function of each part of the digestive system leading to some very messy results! YEAR 13 BIOLOGY STUDENTS CONSIDER THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 At the beginning of lockdown, Mrs Dawson held a seminar for the Year 13 students considering university courses in Biological and Medical fields. The students created presentations focusing on how people in their chosen career path are involved in the fight against coronavirus.
YEAR 8 BIOLOGY EXPERIMENTS Year 8 carried out an experiment looking at Eutrophication the effect of fertiliser pollution in ponds!
YEAR 7'S ARTISTIC RECREATIONS
In their Art lessons Year 7 were asked to research and recreate a famous artwork with some impressive and colourful results.
ARTISTIC LANDSCAPE COLLAGES BY YEAR 9 Using imagery chosen from magazines, Year 9 students created thought provoking collages on topics they feel passionately about. The resulting pieces address a range of issues varying from the environmental crisis to the wealth of culture within the city.
IMPRESSIVE PROJECT WORK Pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 have produced some fantastic project work in their Art and Design lessons. Year 7's work was inspired by Mary Fedden, whilst Year 8 chose a chair and various objects as a substitutes for a self portrait. Year 9 students created some stunning contemporary artworks inspired by Michael Craig-Martin.
GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS' VIRTUAL FIELDWORK Our Year 12 Geography students would have been carrying out fieldwork this term looking at how erosion shapes the coast, however they have shown some genuine creativity by accomplishing the work virtually.
YEAR 8 MAKE WEATHER STATIONS
Year 8 Geographers made their own home weather stations and recorded a week's weather from rainfall to cloud cover.
YEAR 9 EXPLORE THE TROPICAL RAINFOREST ECOSYSTEM This term Year 9 studied Ecosystems, with a particular focus on tropical rainforests, looking at where they are found and why they are there. They also learned about their structure and considered how plants and animals have adapted to survive in them. Pupils then designed an animal that was perfectly adapted to survive in the conditions.The students produced brilliant pieces of work, with some hand-drawing their animals, and others submitting digital creations.
VIRTUAL TRIPS TO ITALY, NEW DEHLI, THE TAJ MAHAL AND MORE! Pupils 'visited' Rome, India, and Naples as well many other places, as part of their end of term virtual trips! Using the power of technology they were able to tour a variety of extraordinary places incorporating lessons across a range of subjects!
Year 7, 8 and 9 took virtual trips to Italy where, after 'flying' to Naples, they enjoyed making pizzas, exploring Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and the Vatican plus many more activities throughout their three-day trip.
As part of their RS studies Year 8 'travelled' throughout India, visiting Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, Jama Masjid, the streets of Old Delhi, Lakshmi Narayan Temple, and Lotus Temples in New Delhi. Year 7 Geographers also took a virtual field trip to New Delhi. The trip was led by Mrs Lilly's Bitmoji who provided educational information about the places visited. This was a brilliant opportunity for them to explore this culturally rich and diverse city. PHYSICAL CHALLENGES
Throughout the period of remote learning, the Sport Department has set daily physical challenges for the whole Leweston community, keeping everyone active at home. To see what everyone got up to visit our @lewestonsport Instagram page.
FANTASTIC RESULTS IN THE BMC'S VIRTUAL MILE Congratulations to Lucy, Archie, Darcy, Issy, Millie and Molly who all took part in the British Milers' Club's Virtual Mile time trial celebrating the 66th anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister's sub 4 minute mile. 1200 athletes took part from across the country. Archie finished in a super quick time of 4.52 min, and there was a top female time of 5.42 for Lucy! Well done all.
GINNY WINS SILVER IN VIRTUAL LASER HOME RUN FINAL! Congratulations to Ginny for qualifying for the U15 Final of the UIPM Global Laser Home Run on 7 May! A massive well done to her for holding her nerve against the other five finalists and achieving an impressive second place!

There were over 15 virtual activities on offer this term ranging from Book Club, Italian Club, Coding Club, Mindfulness, Origami and Sugar Craft. 12 pupils from years 7 to 9 took part in the first virtual meeting of Rhetoric, the junior academic enrichment society. Pupils were faced with a range of Dingbats to solve, a number of group puzzles, and participated in discussion on one of the Big Questions from Oxplore, "Would you rather be free than safe?" An apt question given the lockdown situation, although pupils were encouraged to think more broadly. Mrs Bruller's Sugar Craft Club proved to be very popular with one student sending in this lovely feedback - "Thank you so much for all of your hard work teaching us sugar craft, I have really enjoyed it. It has been so fun to be part of the Club whilst being in lockdown. It has been the highlight of my week! I can't wait to do sugar craft when we are back at school!"

At the end of the term Leweston was thrilled to be shortlisted for the Independent Schools of the Year Sporting Achievement Award. To be shortlisted Leweston had to demonstrate to the judges the impact that sport has on students throughout the school through the breadth of opportunity and participation, as well as the competitive achievements of its students. The judges are looking for evidence that a clear philosophy underpins the provision of sporting experience at the school and evidence of original thinking in the school’s approach to its sporting programme. Director of Sport, Mrs Guy, said "We are delighted to have been short listed for this award particularly because this award recognises the enthusiasm of all our pupils for sport and physical activity and their willingness to get involved and try new things. Throughout lockdown the Leweston community has continued to demonstrate this spirit. Pupils, staff and parents have contributed to the Daily Physical Challenges, raised money with sponsored activities, and continued with their training through online PE lessons and sessions. Some have even competed in online events winning medals in virtual competitions! Our Pentathlon athletes are in full training, including open water swimming at Weymouth and our Equestrian Team are back in the saddle preparing for competitions. Leweston's first Virtual Sports Day was a very fitting way to end the term for a community that is so committed to an active, healthy lifestyle and who have such a strong sense of team spirit!"
