STUDENTS SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS AT TEDxSHERBORNE The inaugural TEDxSherborne in May provided a unique chance to discuss how Sherborne can be ‘Fit for the Future’. Bringing an invited audience together from across our community to share and discuss ideas, the event also delivered opportunities for local students to showcase a variety of talents.

Leweston Prep and Senior Art and Design students also played a part in the event, collaborating to create a fantastic whale for the TEDxSherborne Art Exhibition.

This concept was a visual display of the amount of plastics we use in everyday items over the course of one week. Year 9 built the whale structure raised up from the floor surrounded by sea foam. Year 4 and 5 created the wave to accompany it.

Our Year 10 student, Stella, was selected as one of the final 13 speakers. Stella has travelled extensively with her family, giving her a love of meeting people, a broad view of the world and a passion for informing and inspiring others. Her talk suggested that the community has a vital role to play in education. Stella was the youngest speaker at the event and captivated her audience with a confident and inspirational talk.

Leweston’s involvement didn’t stop there. Our students were invited to submit photographs for the #WeAreSherborneProject.

The brief was to show Sherborne from their perspective and express what it means to live and study here. Four photographs were selected and the students had a fantastic time seeing their artwork at the exhibition in town.

NINE LEWESTON PENTATHLON STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR TEAM GB AT THE EUROPEAN TRIATHLE CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Sunday 5 May Leweston Pentathlon Academy hosted the South West Triathle Championships. The event was also a GB Qualifier for the European Triathle Championships in Madeira in June. The Triathle is a continuous Shoot-SwimRun.140 competitors took part in the various age groups, including 18 athletes from Leweston School and 56 Leweston Pentathlon Academy Club members.

Leweston had great success with nine athletes gaining selection for the Great Britain Team. Congratulations to Minnie M, Charlie O, Molly C, Millie W, Nikita M, Darcy D, Archie C, Ginny B and Lucie G who all travelled to Madeira where Charlie finished with Bronze and Minnie fifth in the U11 category; Millie came sixth and Nikita seventh in the U13’s, Ginny won U15 Bronze and Lucie came tenth in the U17’s. Another excellent achievement for Leweston’s athletes.

Our boarders had lots of fun celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Their celebrations included a pinata and build your own fajitas!

SHERBORNE ABBEY FESTIVAL

Schola performed beautifully at the Sherborne Abbey Festival for another year running. Well done to all of our singers.

YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY FIELDTRIP

Year 12 enjoyed their Geography field trip in Devon, learning the skills needed to conduct their own geographical investigation and write up. The students visited Bideford and Barnstaple where they managed to enjoy some sunshine and the view from the River Taw and Torridge estuary.

They also looked at coastal processes, land forms and associated coastal management at Westward Ho! The only place in the world which contains one exclamation mark. Our Geography students worked hard collecting data which they analysed in class.

Leweston Prep and Senior students wowed audiences at their showstopping productions this Summer Term. After months of rehearsals, remembering lines and costume creation, Leweston drama students put on fantastic productions for friends, family and local primary schools. The Senior School students in Years 7 and 8 performed ‘Mary Poppins’ and Year 9 put on ‘James and the Giant Peach’, whilst the Prep School’s Years 3 - 6 starred in ‘The Bee Musical’ and Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’.

NOW OPEN!

Congratulations to Esme F, Year 7, winner of the graphic design competition. Students in Year 7 and 8 were tasked with designing a logo and giving our new cafe an impressive look and name. Esme took inspiration from our famous Cedar trees on site. The beautifully designed cafe is now open for our School community to enjoy!

YOUTH TEAM CROWNED DRAGON BOAT WINNERS FOR A THIRD YEAR

A big well done to Leweston Red Team who retained the Youth Team Winners title for a third year running at the Sherborne Country Fair, with Leweston Blue Team a close second.

LEWESTON ACHIEVES ECO SCHOOLS SILVER AWARD

We were delighted to receive the Eco-Schools Silver Award in April. Our students’ Eco-Committee have worked extremely hard this year and have been the driving force in achieving this fantastic Eco Schools status.

34 Leweston students made up two teams (red and blue) for the Dragon Boat Race at the popular event. After two consecutive years achieving the Youth Team title our students were determined to make it a third. Their hard work payed off, resulting in their impressive win and second place.

Congratulations to everyone who took part and thank you to the Dragon Boat and Sherborne Fair organisers for making it such an enjoyable day. Thank you to our two boat sponsors Mrs Mary Head and Mrs Sarah Gordon-Wild.

SUMMER CONCERT

Emma S, Year 13, has been leading Leweston’s Eco-Committee and has written about their aims, actions and awareness which can be read on the school website.

Our talented musicians rounded off the first half of the term with a beautiful Summer Concert in our School Chapel.

Twenty athletes represented North Dorset at the Dorset Schools Athletics Championships in Bournemouth. There were some superb performances with five Leweston pupils crowned County Champions: Coco S in the Senior high Jump, Lucie G in the Inter 800 metres, Lily A in the Junior shot, Archie C in the 1500 metres and Darcy D in the 1500 metres. This was Darcy’s fifth consecutive title over 1500 metres or cross-country, which is a fantastic achievement.

ATHLETICS STUDENTS SELECTED TO REPRESENT DORSET AT THE SOUTH WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS

A further nine athletes also competed briliantly to finish in second and third places; Molly C in the Minor 800 metres, Ginny B in the Junior 800 metres, Lily A in the Junior 300 metres, Clemmie K in the Inter 800 metres, Lucy B in the Minor 1500 metres, Eliza D in the Senior long jump, Kate B in the Senior high jump, Matilda J in the Senior 100 metres and Loki M in the Minor Boys hurdles.

As a result of the event Lucie, Darcy, Lily and Archie were all selected to represent Dorset in the South-West Championships.

70 YEARS AT LEWESTON MANOR! On Friday 14 June Leweston celebrated the School’s 70th anniversary at Leweston Manor with family, friends, Sisters, and alumni.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Mass and High Tea. We must also thank the five former pupils, all of whom were at Leweston in it’s early years, and who visited the Prep to speak to the children about their time at the school. It was a brilliant day and fantastic to hear so many fond memories.

SENIOR SPORTS DAY MAKES HISTORY

Leweston athletes competed brilliantly at the 2019 Sports Day.

Despite the showers, the events went ahead with the students showcasing their resilience and determination throughout the unpredictable English weather! History was made this year with multiple students breaking school records, setting personal bests and the School’s first boys’ records created. Special congratulations to; Junior and Senior Victrix Ludorum, Lily A and Lucie G who both won three Individual Golds and set a new Whole School Record each, Archie C who came first in the Boy’s Individual Competition and Campion House who were crowned the House Athletics Champions 2019!

LEWESTON SUMMER FEST 2019

Leweston’s inaugural Summer Fest 2019 was a fantastic success with the sun shining on the School’s beautiful grounds the entire day. We welcomed over 400 people who enjoyed the stalls, food and drinks stands, chef demonstrations, Kids Zone, and incredible live bands, one of which played at Glastonbury Festival the same month!

There was something for everyone in the family and it was a brilliant day. We can’t wait until next year!

EQUESTRIAN ACTIVITIES STILL A BIG PART OF LIFE AT LEWESTON 125 YEARS ON

Leweston Equestrian Team came to school for their mounted group photo shoot at the start of the term outside the Manor House, unintentionally recreating an image dating back 125 years!

LEWESTON EQUESTRIAN TEAM CELEBRATE OUTSTANDING SUCCESS

Leweston had two very successful trips to the Somerset Levels competing at Kings Sedgemoor Equestrian Centre. The NSEA JWS day saw two of our teams qualify for the National Championships (90cm and 1m) and Individual qualifications for Flora SB (fourth, 80cm), Clemmie K (first, 1m), Flora SB (third, 1m) and Loveday F (fourth, 1m).

At the second trip, our Show Jumping teams competed in the Summer heat to win three out of the four team classes (70cm, 90cm and 1m) and come second in the 70cm. Congratulations also to the two teams (Aqua and Cobalt) who

competed at the Moreton-Russell ODE at Moreton EC. The teams took first and second place in the Inter-Schools NSEA 90cm class and came home with some fantastic prizes and rosettes. The tradition of holding the ‘Captain’s Meal’ at the end of our School year continued as our Equestrian Captain Maria S hosted the supper in Tamburino Gold, Sherborne. Prize-giving took place afterwards and all the squad were awarded aptly titled certificates and gifts. Maria was thanked for her contribution to the teams and everyone thanked Mrs Roberts as Team Manager. It was a fantastic way to round off the academic year.

A MEMORABLE ACTIVITIES WEEK

The Senior School hosted a jam-packed Activities Week at the end of the term. Pupils went on a trip to London to visit museums, iconic british buildings and architecture and the world famous Harry Potter Studios. Year 7 and 8 also had the chance to climb our famous cedar trees, putting their team-work and communication skills to the test.

These skills were also on show in Years 10 and 12 who took part in the Leweston Escape Rooms; solving puzzles in teams to escape the room in the fastest time.

We also held an Eco Day where students focused on minimising food waste, plastic, fast fashion and how we can expand our, already impressive, biodiversity on the School grounds. Feeling inspired, the students wrote to two large supermarkets to ask them about their single use plastics and how they could minimise the amount that is used.

Years 7 - 9 took part in a variety of STEAM workshops held in Art and Science and students also visited a waterpark, an arable farm and Yeovilton air base.

This was a fun-filled memorable week which showcased students ability to thrive even when out of their comfort zones.

SENIOR SPEECH DAY 2019

Thank you to everyone for joining us at our Senior School Speech Day.

The morning started with Mass in the School Chapel and the traditional gowning ceremony where Year 13 passed their gowns to Year 12 marking their last day at

Leweston and Year 12’s journey into Upper Sixth. Thank you to our Head Girl and Prefects for doing such an amazing job this year.

The School then watched as the prize givers collected their awards for the many varied achievements over this academic year.

We were delighted to welcome back former pupil, Charlotte Croney to speak about her impressive journey since leaving Leweston, becoming a Lawyer, and staying in China. To read her full speech and view a gallery of images from the ceremony please visit our website.

LEWESTON PREP

MAY FAIR! We enjoyed a fabulous May fair this term! The sun was shining and the Prep PALS worked so hard to produce a wonderful event. With stalls and games for all, a magic show, craft stand, BBQ, outstanding raffle prizes and more, it really was a fun-filled family event! We raised an exceptional ÂŁ1,500 which will be spent on equipment for the pupils. A huge thank you to everyone who organised, helped, donated and attended. We are so grateful for your support.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

To celebrate World Environment Day our Prep pupils worked with local artist, Charlotte Marshall, to produce a giant piece of collaborative art work made entirely from RUBBISH! Year 3 learned that 9 out of 10 people breathe polluted air.

With this in mind, the class took part in the World Environment Day Mask Challenge as a symbol to leaders that we want to breath clean air. They then discussed the ways in which we can beat air pollution!

ATHLETICS SUCCESS FOR YEAR 6 PUPILS

After coming second at the Senior Wessex Athletics Championships, Year 6 pupils Jess B (discus) and Dominique P (shot put) both represented the area of Wessex at the National Prep Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham in July!

SUMMER GARDENING

Thank you to Palmers Garden Centre who kindly donated several trays of plants which pupils from Transition 2, Reception and Year 1 worked together to plant out making the Prep School look even more beautiful!

BRAESIDE! The NAEE - National Association for Environmental Education UK and Learning Away found that “A residential learning experience provides opportunities and benefits/impacts that cannot be achieved in any other educational context or setting. The impact is greater when residentials are fully integrated with a school’s curriculum and ethos.”

They also found that residentials: • Foster deeper relationships

• Improve students’ resilience, self-confidence and well being • Boost cohesion and a sense of belonging

• Improve students’ engagement with learning

• Improve students’ knowledge, skills and understanding • Support students’ achievement

• Smooth students’ transition experiences

Our Year 5 and 6 students definitely reaped the benefits at this year’s Braeside residential where they all took part in a variety of activities and team building experiences that tested and widened a range of skills, and even Miss Phillips braved the zip wire jump!

After our ‘Speak out, Stay safe’ assembly and workshops from the NSPCC at School in the first half of the term, our Prep decided to take action and put together an obstacle course event to raise money for the Charity’s vital work in schools.

The course itself was designed and set-up entirely by our team of Year 6 Prefects. The pupils displayed impressive creativity with their obstacle challenges which were enjoyed by all the children, despite the fleeting visit from the rain! The event also fell into the British Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Eating Week and the obstacle course tied in perfectly with their ‘Get Active’ campaign.

A NEW SUBJECT FOR SEPT 2019!

From September, Leweston Prep pupils will be taking lessons in a new subject. In association with IAPS and the United Nations, we will be teaching the ‘Education for Social Responsibility’ curriculum:

“Member schools will embrace the 6 elements of ESR: Wellbeing, Rights, Responsibilities, Intelligent Behaviours, Knowledge and Opportunities.

As a result students will become more effective and compassionate individuals, prepared for the challenges of leadership and responsibility beyond their time at school.”

YEAR 5 GO BACK IN TIME!

Year 5 went back in time this term to Ancient Greece. The pupils learnt about the culture, textiles and artefacts and also got to experience a Greek banquet. They put everything they had learned into designing their very own ancient Greek pottery.

OUR SCHOOL GROUND’S BIODIVERSITY HELPS YEAR 5 SCIENCE!

Year 5 Science class went outside searching for the five types of buttercup that we have in the School grounds.

The students differenciated between the Bulbous, Meadow, Creeping, Goldilocks and Celery Leaved buttercups by analysing their petals and sepals.

NINE PUPILS REPRESENTED NORTH DORSET IN SWIMMING GALA!

Nine pupils from Year 4 and 5 swam for North Dorset this term, having qualified as the winners in their various strokes at the North Dorset Galas! Well done to all involved!

PREP SPORTS DAY LEWESTON PREP TAKE THE BAREFOOT CHALLENGE ON SPEECH DAY TO HELP CHILDREN WORLDWIDE! Thank you to family, friends and former staff and pupils for joining us at our Prep School Speech Day and for helping us make a fantastic donation to Sal’s Shoes.

According to Sal’s Shoes ‘there are 300 million barefoot children worldwide’ and in many countries you cannot go to school without a

pair of shoes. With this in mind, the pupils decided to donate their old school shoes to the charity, who will redistribute them across the world, as well as in the UK, to children in great need.

thinking about how their old shoes could help other children. Leweston Prep donated 114 pairs of shoes to the charity and are determined to do more to help in the next academic year!

The pupils removed their shoes and walked to the prize giving ceremony in the Sports Hall barefoot to appreciate what children across the world go through just to get to school everyday. It was a powerful and thought-provoking demonstration which got the pupils
