Leweston Life Autumn Term 2018

The announcement was made this term that the Prep School has won the Independent School Parent Magazine’s Pre-Prep of the Year Award. The judges said ‘childhood is embraced to its fullest here, and thanks to the school’s fantastic music and dance provision, the halls are even said to hum with the sound of music’. Earlier this year, the school also won a Gold Award from the Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools initiative recognising its outdoor, wildlife and green activities.

AN AWARD WINNING YEAR FOR LEWESTON!

Year 13 Business Student receives an award at the 2018 Annual Session of Global Forum on Human Settlements and Sustainable Cities and Settlements Award Ceremony.

The Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) 2018 is committed to creating a global platform for high-level dialogues, sharing innovative policies, standards, strategies, technology and successful experiences, enhancing capacity building, fostering new partnerships and facilitating effective actions, and promoting cooperation and the green development in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Caro W. attended the event in Bangkok, and was presented with the Global Little Green Ambassador award. Caro spoke of why the topical issues are so important to her; “I study A-Level Business at Leweston School and, in addition to my studies, I have a passion for environmental protection. I encourage my family and friends to participate in non-profit environmental protection activities.”

We are thrilled to announce that we have been shortlisted for the Creativity award in the TES Independent Schools Awards 2019. The TES have recognised the role that performing arts plays at Leweston both inside and outside of the curriculum. Well done to all the staff and pupils who put creativity at the heart of the school.

Our pupils celebrated their Pre-Prep of the Year nomination at, a very popular, Grandparents’ Day in September. The children’s grandparents came and enjoyed plenty of fun activities and a tasty lunch with their grandchildren.

BOARDERS’ ‘AIM’ TO WIN!

Leweston Boarders had a great time practising their aim at their archery activity in Dorchester!

Weekend workshops this term also included a chocolate making activity and some festive arts and crafts!

SUCCESS AT THE WORLD LASER RUN CHAMPIONSHIPS, DUBLIN

Seven of our students took part in the World LaserRun Championships in Dublin, representing Great Britain. The results at the World Laser-Run Championships were a great achievement by all the Leweston School competitors, and we were delighted to have the first boy, Charlie O., Year 4, from the School to run in a GB vest. The results included a Team Silver, Team Gold, and Darcy D winning the Under 15 Girls Gold Medal finishing as the Girls World Champion. The full results can be found on our website.

LEWESTON’S LEWESTON’S VISIT FROM FANTASTIC RESULTS AT NEPAL

We were delighted to welcome Bil Gurang, Headmaster of Jana Jyoti School in Nepal to Leweston this term. Bil talked to our students about his School and what they can expect whilst on their trip to Jana Jyoti next year. Leweston’s connection with Jana Jyoti School started over thirty years ago when, then member of staff, Liz Rutter came across the school whilst in the country. Since then, Leweston’s pupils have carried out fundraising events to raise funds for the School and have been on trips to visit. A number of former pupils have spent their gap years working at Jana Jyoti.

Next year a group of Year 10 and 11 students will be flying out and will learn about the developments since our relationship started.

DORSET SCHOOLS’ BIATHLON

The Dorset Schools Biathlon competition took place at Leweston School in October with 180 competitors taking part. Leweston had some excellent results, achieving 2 Team Gold (U11, U12 Girls) 2 Silver (U9 Boys, U11 Girls) and 1 Bronze (U12 Girls). In the individual, 2 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze. These were some excellent team and individual results and we were delighted to see many competitors in the younger age groups taking part in their first biathlon, performing brilliantly and looking forward to their next event.

INTERSCHOOLS’ RPL AND GRASS ROOTS SHOW JUMPING EVENT

We were thrilled to once again host our hugely popular annual InterSchools’ RPL and Grass Roots event.

This year we had 220 entries from 30 schools with everyone riding fantastically and some brilliant results, all are available on our website.

KATE J SPEAKS AT PARLIAMENT

Kate, Year 12, held herself perfectly conducting a fantastic, heartfelt and inspiring speech at the UK Youth Parliament meeting earlier this term. ASHA TRIP 2018

This term Leweston pupils visited Delhi to work at Kalkaji slum on their Joint Schools ASHA Trip. The team that visited was made up of 15 girls and teachers from Leweston School, Gryphon School and Sherborne School for Girls. Whilst there the group spent five days in Kalkaji Slum Community where they took English classes, helped students with conversational English, ICT skills and presentations.

They ran craft, games and sports sessions with the younger students, went on home visits in the slum with the Community Healthcare Workers to monitor health and vaccinations of 0-5 year olds, and sat in on GP clinics run from the ASHA community centre. Students also spoke to Year 12 college students who are able to study thanks to the support and sponsorship of ASHA.

LEST WE FORGET Students from the Prep and Senior school created stunning works of art to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One. Mono prints were created by art academy students from years 7 to 12 and glazed ceramic poppies were made by years 4 and 5 in their art lessons.

YEAR 10’S NEWSPAPER CHALLENGE

Our Year 10 design students completed their ‘Newspaper Challenge’. They had to create a garment or interior design element from scratch using newspaper.

This challenge allowed pupils to experiment with silhouette as well as folding, tucking and pinning. These techniques can later be translated into fabric for their GCSE project.

Regional Inter-Schools Shooting Competition Leweston hosted the Regional Inter-Schools Shooting Competition, one of 6 qualifying events for the National Schools Competition in Aylesbury on 16 January 2019. Leweston had 33 competitors taking part, more than any other school in the country, reflecting how popular the sport is at the School.

In the junior category, Leweston had many competitors with good strength in depth,

taking Gold and Silver. The Intermediate team also took Gold. The last event of the day was the seniors and Leweston made it a clean sweep of the teams, which has never been done before, finishing with team Gold in this category as well. These results meant that Leweston now has nine students going to national finals and a team in every age group which is a great achievement that has not been done by any other school!

Years 7, 8 and 9 enjoy Army STEM events

Meanwhile our GCSE pupils got to explore the wonders of the V&A and the Royal Academy of Arts. The idea was to look at different concepts and explore how they could use those ideas in their own work.

SENIOR SCHOOL AND SIXTH FORM ART AND DESIGN, TEXTILES AND FINE ART TRIPS

Year 9 Art and Design students visited Roche Court New Art Centre in Salisbury. With the help of Artist Andrea V. Wright, pupils thought about how they could create an interesting abstract sculpture using black tape, black wool, and the floor and wall as a base. This was just one of many activities resulting in a fantastic day from which the students came home with lots of inspiration for their projects!

Design textile students from years 10-12 attended a workshop with textile artist Juliana Sissons at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. The students were set a brief to create a large piece of ‘fabric’ made entirely from recycled materials. This fabric was then used to create a garment by draping on the stand. In order to get some inspiration the students were able

to view the V&A’s new clothing exhibition ‘Fashioned from Nature’.

Sixth Form Fine Art students visited the Tate Britain, Tate Modern and the Hayward Gallery in London where they visited a number of exhibitions that the pupils found ‘gripping’, ‘extremely powerful’ and ‘thought-provoking’.

GEOGRAPHY

ICELAND TRIP Leweston’s Sixth Form students, along with Dauntsey’s School, visited Iceland for their A Level Geography field trip. They experienced ‘beautiful days with spectacular scenery and light’. Read more about their trip on our website.

We hosted our hugely successful annual Inter-Schools Cross-Country Relays. Many thanks to all the schools who competed and the friends and family who supported them.

JACK D INVITED AS ENGLAND MASCOT AT THE ENGLAND V ALL BLACKS GAME ON REMEMBRANCE WEEKEND.

Jack D, Year 4, was over the moon to have been asked to be the England Mascot at the England vs All Black’s game at Twickenham over Remembrance Weekend.
