WOODY GWYN: CELEBRATION OF WORKS

Woody Gwyn, widely recognized as one of America’s foremost contemporary landscape painters, is currently the subject of a major solo exhibition, Skylight On Water, Trees, Rock and Road, at the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi, on view from May 14 through August 23, 2026.

Gwyn is celebrated as one of today’s finest representational painters, known for his passion for finding “the truth of the land”. His work focuses on the American Landscape and Seascape, particularly the Southwest and East Coast, and majestic seascapes of the Westcoast and Northwest, capturing crystalline light, breathtaking expanses, and verdant foliage, with extraordinary luminosity and meticulous detail. Gwyn excels at capturing the environment’s grandeur alongside its intimate moments, extracting a sense of the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary.

Gwyn’s distinctive style is characterized by luminous color, unconventional compositions, and remarkable aesthetic harmony created between the natural and manmade. He begins his process with plein air sketches and watercolors, then translates these immediate observations into lush canvases in his studio, employing exquisite technical skill in rendering the minutest of detail and suffusing his work with pristine light.

Woody Gwyn was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1944. Having moved to New Mexico in 1974, he found an awe-inspiring sense of space and scale to center his artistic practice. His work has been exhibited in national and international museums including the Tel Aviv Museum in Tel Aviv, Israel; le Centre Nationale des Arts Plastiques in Paris, France; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among others. Gwyn was the 2010 recipient of New Mexico’s highest artistic honor, the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for Painting. A full-color monograph of his work was published by Texas Tech University Press in 1994.
