FRITZ SCHOLDER

Fritz Scholder (1937–2005) is a transformative figure in American art, celebrated for reimagining representations of Indigenous people. Rejecting romanticized stereotypes, Scholder embraced German Expressionism and Pop Art, bringing a contemporary edge to Native American identity. His emotionally charged works broke with tradition, offering a raw, complex vision of the Indigenous experience, infused with paradox and mystery. Themes like the mythic, the female figure, the spirit world, and the afterlife populated his imaginative subject world.

A pivotal aspect of Scholder’s legacy lies in his works on paper. While his paintings and sculptures are well-known, his prints, drawings, and collages revealed the core of his artistic inquiry. These pieces became a vital space for experimentation, letting him explore form, composition, and process apart from his canvas work. Marked by dynamic lines, vibrant colors, and visceral energy, they delve into themes ranging from objective representation to apparitional forms, physiognomic distortion, and subjective states.

This exhibition brings together a wide selection of Scholder’s works on paper, highlighting his contributions to printmaking and the depth of his creative vision. Scholder (one-quarter Luiseño) was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, in 1937, and studied under Wayne Thiebaud at Sacramento City College. His career gained momentum in the 1960s while teaching at Santa Fe’s Institute of American Indian Arts, where he earned national recognition for his groundbreaking art that redefined the portrayal of Native Americans. His work is now held in the permanent collections of over 120 major museums.

“The lithographs have become an important part of the work. As a painter-printmaker and fetish maker, I revel at being able to produce statements in various forms. In today’s world, love, art, and magic are greatly needed.”
