MY DESIGN CONTEXT “Form Follows Function,” are the famous words by the architect Louis Sullivan. Following this conceptualized idea, I designed multi-unit apartment complex. The site is located at North 8th Avenue and West Roosevelt Street. After a thorough analysis of the site, I spotted three important factors on this site that would greatly influence my design. The first corresponds with sun orientation. I discovered, that in order to optimize the most amount of sunlight and shading, I’ll have to direct my building east. This allowed for all the individual units in my multi-unit apartments to receive plenty of sunlight and shading. The parking situation was an obvious fix, because there was already a street that leads to an alley way on the site. It made the most sense to place the parking structure on this existing street. Lastly, I wanted my building to directly face the building across the street, the highly acclaimed, PRD 845. I was greatly inspired by the work of Steven Holl, Rem Koolhaas, and Le Corbusier. The façade is a reflection on all those influences. There are a total of nine units, none of which are exact duplicates. I decided to increase the amount of space on the second floor with cantilevered floors. I also expanded the ground floor by providing numerous gardens all around the apartment complex. There is plenty of exterior spaces among all the ground floor units. Also, I gave the top units exterior spaces by creating roof gardens in each of the secondary floor units.
