We are delighted to present you with the updated and revised edition of our textbook Economie, een inleiding. In addition to the printed version of the book, an enhanced digital edition is simultaneously made available for the reader. User comfort, findability and availability are key words in our endeavor.

It is our honour to launch the new series CeMIS Migration and Intercultural Studies in collaboration with the Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS) of the University of Antwerp that seeks to foster collaboration between society and academia, and to present the first volume in the this series: Moroccan Migration in Belgium.

In the journal section we welcome no less than 3 new, inter­ national and peer-reviewed journals! Journal of Diversity and Gender Studies, Nieuwe Tijdingen. Over vroegmoderne geschiedenis, and Transdisciplinary Insights. This last one appears in full Open Access, which is a major priority of our press, perfectly in line with our role as a not-for-profit partner within the academic community.

Cold War Triangle How Scientists in East and West Tamed HIV Reni ld e Lo e ckx

A small group of scientists were doggedly working in the field of antiviral treatments when the AIDS epidemic struck. Faced with one of the grand challenges of modern biology of the twentieth century, scientists worked across the political divide of the Cold War to produce a new class of antivirals. Their molecules were developed by a Californian start-up together with teams of scientists at the Rega Institute of KU Leuven and the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (IOCB) of the Academy of Sciences in Prague. These molecules became the cornerstone of the blockbuster drugs now used to combat and prevent HIV. Cold War Triangle gives an insight into the human face of science as it recounts the extraordinary story of scientists in East and West who overcame ideological barriers and worked together for the benefit of humanity.

The First World War witnessed an unprecedented mobilization of philosophers: as soldiers at the front, as public figures on the home front, as nurses in field hospitals; as mothers and wives, sons and fathers in wartime.

In Germany, the war irrupted in the midst of the rapid growth of Edmund Husserl’s phenomenological movement – widely considered one of the most significant philosophical movements in twentieth century thought.

Philosophers at the Front offers a documentary history of phenomenology in the First World War. Through an exceptional collection of primary source materials (letters, postcards, original writings, photographs) from the Husserl Archives in Leuven, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and the Archives of the University of Göttingen, the complex narratives of how the war affected the lives and thought of central figures in the phenomenological movement are charted. Key figures such as Edmund Husserl, his sons Wolfgang and Gerhart, Max Scheler, Edith Stein, Adolf Reinach, Martin Heidegger, and others are included in this collection of materials.

The volume includes reproductions of original material, as well as German transcription of all texts and their English translation.

Nicolas de Warren is professor of philosophy at the Centre for Phenomenology and Continental Philosophy / Husserl Archives at KU Leuven.

Thomas Vongehr studied philosophy in Munich and obtained his PhD from LudwigMaximilians-Universität Munich in 1995. Since 2002, he is assistant at the Husserl Archives at KU Leuven.

Veel studenten die vandaag de aula’s bevolken, hebben het uitbreken van de financiële crisis in 2008 niet van nabij beleefd. De Grote Recessie die in 2009 losbrak, ligt intussen ook al bijna tien jaar achter ons. En pas nu, na acht moeizame jaren, kruipt de Europese economie schuchter uit het dal.

De economische vooruitzichten klaren (eindelijk) op, de groei trekt wat aan en de werkloosheid neemt af. Sinds Economie. Een inleiding – editie 2013 is er bijgevolg veel veranderd.

Hoog tijd dus voor een grondige herwerking van hét handboek waar­mee generaties studenten sinds 1977 hun weg vinden in economie als wetenschap. De economische realiteit mag dan wel drastisch veranderd zijn, de vragen zijn er daarom niet minder en al zeker niet makkelijker op geworden. Denk maar aan: Hoe komt het dat het ruim acht jaar duurde om de crisis te verteren? Was het drieste besparingsbeleid wel het gepaste antwoord op de crisis? Zou het voor Griekenland gemakkelijker geweest zijn om de crisis te bekampen met een eigen munt? Is er wel sprake van perfecte mededinging nu internetgiganten zoals Facebook, Google of Amazon alle concurrentie wegblazen? En waarom neemt het verzet tegen globalisering en vrijhandels­akkoorden zo fel toe, als de theorie leert dat iedereen net beter wordt van vrijhandel? En hangt dit samen met de discussie rond ongelijkheid, die de Franse econoom Thomas Piketty nieuw leven inblies?

Allemaal pertinente vragen en het maatschappelijk debat errond getuigt vaak van een grote nood aan duidelijke antwoorden.

Wat is er gewijzigd in deze versie van het handboek?

Met een economische realiteit die er volledig anders uitziet dan bij de vorige grondige herwerking in 2010 was er nood aan meer dan de gewone opfrisbeurt. Dit zijn enkele belangrijke wijzigingen: —— In elk hoofdstuk wordt nog explicieter de link gelegd met de actualiteit. Zowat alle micro-economische hoofdstukken sluiten af met een uitgewerkt voorbeeld, dat een verband legt tussen de soms abstracte theorie en de concrete economische realiteit. Wie het handboek leest, zal merken dat er economische principes schuilen in de kleinste hoekjes van ons dagelijkse leven.

—— Voor het macrodeel was het vanzelfsprekend dat de Grote Recessie en de invloed ervan op de macroeconomische inzichten een centrale rol krijgt toebedeeld. De vele tabellen en figuren kregen een update op basis van het meest recente cijfermateriaal en de laatst beschikbare prognoses.

—— Hoofdstukken werden om didactische redenen gesplitst of net samengevoegd. Zo is er nu een apart hoofdstuk dat gewijd is aan ongelijkheid en verdeling, een nieuw hoofdstuk dat de vraag behandelt in hoeverre de onzichtbare hand van de markt ons in de richting van het ‘beste’ resultaat stuwt, en een nieuw hoofdstuk over kapitaal- en financiële markten.

—— Het handboek verschijnt ook als e-boek. Bij aankoop van het papieren boek ontvangt de lezer een unieke toegang tot het e-boek.

The French comic magazine Pilote hebdomadaire arrived in a weakening comics market in 1959 largely dominated by syndicated translations of American comics and comics inspired by a Catholic ethos. It tailored its content and tone to an older adolescent reader far removed from that of France’s infant comic. Pilote’s profile set it on a turbulent course subject to the vicissitudes and fickleness of fashion which situated it within an emerging teenager press under pressure to renew and innovate to survive.

When it made cartoons its defining characteristic in 1963, Pilote articulated its uniqueness by channelling teenager discourse through them whilst also trying to encourage a zest for education in a modernising and economically buoyant France of exciting new opportunities. Pilote’s cartoon art thus became a dynamic repository for the ideas and attitudes of France’s educated youth which evolved into the radical discourses of the lifestyle and political revolutions of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

This book tells how Pilote hebdomadaire’s unique positioning in a new and fast developing youth press market for teenagers provided the forum and catalyst for the bande dessinée’s stylistic evolution over the course of the 1960s and 1970s.

Wendy Michallat is a lecturer in French at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. She teaches and researches in the field of French cultural history and popular culture.

Romancier bien connu du panthéon littéraire belge, Georges Eekhoud (1854–1927) ne s’est pas limité aux pratiques d’auteur prestigieuses et à la langue française. Son « hard labour » quotidien – comme il le qualifiait lui-même – de chroniqueur bilingue et de feuilletoniste anonyme franchissait continuellement les frontières linguistiques et nationales.

Tantôt douanier, tantôt contrebandier, il a colporté, adapté et manipulé des discours patriotiques en français et en néerlandais entre Anvers, Paris et Bruxelles. L’étude de ces activités inédites, aux confins de l’écriture et de la traduction, offre une vision méconnue des relations interculturelles en Belgique à la Belle Époque.

From the early nineteenth century till the middle of the twentieth century, cultures in Europe were primarily national. They were organized and conceived of as attributes of the nation states. Nonetheless, these national cultures crossed borders with an unprecedented intensity even before globalization transformed the very concept of culture. During that long period, European cultures have imported and exported products, techniques, values, and ideas, relying on invisible but efficient international networks. The central agents of these networks are considered mediators: translators, publishers, critics, artists, art dealers and collectors, composers. These agents were not only the true architects of intercultural transfer, they also largely contributed to the shaping of a common canon and of aesthetic values that became part of the history of national cultures.

Cultural Mediation in Europe, 1800–1950 analyses the strategic transfer roles of cultural mediators active in large parts of Western Europe in domains as varied as literature, music, painting, or art design.

Reine Meylaerts is professor of comparative literature and translation Studies at KU Leuven and Chair of the EST Doctoral Studies Committee.

Lieven D’hulst is professor of Francophone literature and translation studies at KU Leuven and head of the Research Group Translation and Intercultural Transfer.

The Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS) was founded in 2005 at the University of Antwerp, on the initiative of a group of researchers who were working together within the framework of the Antwerp Centre for Migrant Studies.

CeMIS is an interdisciplinary research centre that has received national and international praise for its work. The centre conducts research as well as providing education and other academic services relating to migration, integration, and intercultural themes in various social fields, including education, the labour market, welfare, family, health, and law.

Collaborating with civil society, policymakers, and other academic partners, the research centre addresses the challenges arising from migration and intercultural life in today’s society.

CeMIS seeks to provide an open and pluralistic research platform that fosters collaboration between society and academia.

Christiane Timmerman is professor at the University of Antwerp and, as research professor, academic director of the Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS), University of Antwerp.

Nadia Fadil is associate professor at the Interculturalism, Migration and Minorities Research Centre (IMMRC) at KU Leuven.

Idesbald Goddeeris is professor at KU Leuven, where he teaches (post)colonial and migration history.

Noel Clycq is visiting professor at the University of Antwerp and holds the chair in European Values: Discourses and Prospects at the History Department. He is senior researcher at the Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS).

Karim Ettourki is a consultant for the heritage of ethnic-cultural minorities at KADOC, the Documentation and Research Centre of KU Leuven, and staff member of Archiefbank Vlaanderen.

Wolfgang Rihm ( b. Karlsruhe, 1952) is the most performed living German composer. With his personal, expressive, and versatile music, he became the most prominent representative of his generation. His individual approach to music was established in the 1980s and he continues to explore and enlarge his original concepts today. His 1980s work is at the core of this book, more specifically his instrumental music: the Chiffre cycle and the string quartets. Thinking about Rihm includes reflecting on his interest in philosophy, his relation to fine arts, his awareness of principles found in nature, and his references to important composers from the past. His music is embedded in the past and the actuality in modernism and postmodernism. Notwithstanding Rihm’s generosity in essays and introductions to his works, many aspects of the ‘inner sound’ of his music stay an elusive, ungraspable ‘chiffre’: a challenge for the analyst.

Sebastian Brants moraalsatire Das Narrenschyff (1494) maakte dankzij Jakob Lochers Latijnse bewerking Stultifera Nauis (1497) snel furore in de kring van de Europese humanisten. Al in 1500 verscheen in Parijs een drastische omwerking van deze bestseller in het Laatmiddelvlaams: Dit is der zotten ende der narren scip. Dit prachtwerk wordt toegeschreven aan de Gentse humanist Josse Bade (1462–1535). Het boek bestaat uit 117 hoofdstukken, met meestal eerst een motto op rijm, dan een houtsnede en de centrale tekst, waarna veelal een berijmde moraal. De hoofdstukken fungeren als columns over een breed scala van dwaasheden die de auteur hekelt en waarbij hij raad geeft.

The Journal of Diversity and Gender Studies (DiGeSt) is a bi-annual, peer-reviewed international journal dedicated to the intersection of diversity and gender studies.

DiGeSt has the ambition to be a leading journal in the field and publishes original work from a wide array of disciplines including sociology, anthropology, communication sciences, political sciences, philosophy, history, arts, and literature. In addition, it is open to work from other disciplines such as psychology and educational sciences, especially when there is a strong link with frameworks that are also used in the social sciences and the humanities.

DiGeSt mainly publishes work related to Europe. Given that debates about gender and diversity often transcend national borders, the journal occasionally also publishes work related to other geographical contexts.

Terwijl de tijd vervliegt, is ruimte weerbarstig. Dat bleek in het bij­zonder in de Reformatietijd van de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw. Toen werd het religieuze landschap weliswaar grondig hertekend, maar ruimtes die van oudsher een sacrale status hadden (zoals kerken, koren en kerk­hoven) bleven vaak ononderbroken in gebruik, al dan niet met een andere functie. Deze Nieuwe Tijdingen onderzoeken daarom het (her)gebruik van sacrale ruimtes in tijden van ingrijpende religieuze verandering, een thema dat vandaag een belangrijk onderzoeks­object is geworden in het vroegmodern onderzoek. Tegelijkertijd brengen ze onderzoek over de Noorde­lijke en de Zuidelijke Nederlanden samen. Zo blijken ruimtes te lezen als palimpsesten, met laag na laag vol betekenis. Ruimtes laten niet gemakkelijk los.
