Photographic images can, apart from their capacity to show, convey an experience, a quality that has seldom been recognized. In this book the artist and photographer Maarten Vanvolsem explains how the strip technique can tell a different story of time and space in photographic images, a story that leads to new expressions and experiences of time and movement. The strip technique itself seems to be neglected in the debate on time and photography, although it has a long history. Its use is widespread and, especially in recent years, more and more artists rediscover the technique. Based on an historical overview, a knowledge and understanding of the technique, and experiments with the building of cameras, this book will propose a new use of this forgotten art: a use in which the temporal terms ‘speed’, ‘rhythm’, and ‘pace’ are of more value than terms so often associated with photography such as

Sacred places have long exercised a special fascination. Sacred places are not static entities but reveal a historical dynamic. They are the result of cultural developments and have varied multidimensional levels of significance. They are places where time is, as it were, suspended, and they are points where holy times and holy places meet. Sacred places are places apart. It is this specificity in the context of the Christian religions of the West that Loci Sacri wishes to unveil by bringing together specialists from various disciplines, countries, and Christian denominations. One of the questions is why some sites have for centuries proven to be so popular while others have not. Another topic is the way in which extraordinary natural sites have been designated as sacred and given new meaning, primarily by means of architecture. Loci Sacri also explores the ‘eternal’ character of this sacred status.

Before the last quarter of the eighteenth century there was a remarkably uniform pattern of church-state relationships across Europe. In the course of the nineteenth century this firm alliance broke down. Religious pluralism developed everywhere, requiring church and state to reach fresh solutions. This volume, Political and Legal Perspectives, highlights the impact of political change, or ‘democratization’, on religious reform in Northern Europe. Competing political parties expressed contrasting views about whether ‘the state’ should be ‘neutral’ or whether it should give particular support to one church or another. It is hardly surprising that there was no ‘one fits all’ solution. Some countries were multi-confessional while others were still confessional. The focus of this book is historical, but how ‘the state’ deals with ‘the church’ (and ‘the church’ with ‘the state’) continues to be a live public issue in a multi-confessional and multi-faith European Union.
Developments in church-state relationships in Northern Europe between 1780 and 1920 had a substantial impact on reformist ideas, projects, and movements within the churches. Conversely, the dynamics of religious reform prompted the state to react in various ways. To what extent did church and state mutually influence each other? How and why did they do so? These are the central questions in The Churches, the second volume in the Dynamics of Religious Reform Series. The volume concentrates on the reforms generated by the churches themselves and on their response to the political and legal reforms initiated by the state. It shows how processes of church reform evolved differently in different countries.

De olfactometer van Zwaardemaker, de Hipp-chronoscoop, de esthesiometer, de tachistoscoop en de tamboer van Marey… Achter deze ingewikkelde namen gaat een unieke verzameling psychologische onderzoeksapparatuur schuil: de ‘Collectie Michotte’, vernoemd naar de Leuvense professor Albert baron Michotte van den Berck (1881-1965). De opbouw van de collectie begon op de zolder van het Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte, waar in 1894 het laboratorium voor experimentele psychologie werd opgericht. Met eenvoudige proeven en ingenieus ontworpen instrumenten slaagde Michotte erin allerlei complexe psychologische processen in kaart te brengen. Want meten was weten aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Psychologie werd bedreven volgens het natuurwetenschappelijke model. Michottes originele onderzoek naar de visuele waarneming van causaliteit bezorgde hem internationale faam. Hij werd hét icoon van de Leuvense psychologie. De permanente opstelling van de collectie in de bibliotheek van de Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) getuigt nog altijd van zijn bijzondere positie. Verlengstukken van het bewustzijn vertelt de geschiedenis van de ‘Collectie Michotte’. Zowel de oprichting van het laboratorium voor experimentele psychologie en de aanschaf van de eerste instrumenten, evenals de verzelfstandiging van de discipline in de loop van de twintigste eeuw en de historische beeldvorming rond de grote Michotte komen aan bod. Zo wordt deze bijzondere verzameling apparatuur geplaatst in een bredere context, en toegankelijk gemaakt voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de geschiedenis van de psychologie.
The relationship between sexuality and psychoanalysis can be described in terms of an old and stormy love affair. The same can be said about the relationship between psychoanalysis and philosophy. It is precisely this fascinating ‘love triangle’ that the present volume of essays aims to explore. A diverse group of philosophers and psychoanalysts reflected on the concept of sexuality in Freudo-Lacanian psychoanalysis. The result is a stimulating collection of essays where the role of sexuality in psychoanalysis is scrutinized from a philosophical point of view. This volume does more than merely offer an alternative psychoanalytic account of sexuality. It also develops a wide range of philosophical reflections on sexuality as conceptualized by Freudo-Lacanian psychoanalysis, and in this way initiates a dialogue between the two concurrent disciplines.

This book is the third of a series of five volumes that exhaustively brings together the writings of Jean-François Lyotard (1924–1998) on contemporary art and artists. This collection of essays, written between 1974 and 1977 in the middle of the time of Duchamp’s rediscovery in France, was published by Editions Galilée (Paris) in 1977 and in English translation by The Lapis Press (Los Angeles) in 1990. This volume republishes the two versions face to face, including the drawings, diagrams and images of the original edition. Herman Parret presents the text in a substantial introduction and Dalia Judovitz situates it in the more general framework of Lyotardian philosophical reflection. Duchamp’s trans/formers reconstructs the Large Glass and Given, Duchamp’s two major works that glorify the body in its topological conceptuality. This volume is a collection of essays based on lectures given at the International Orpheus Academy for Music Theory on ‘Music and Theory: Thoroughbass in Practice, Theory, and Improvisation’. Hence the point of departure was not ‘Music Theory’ as such, but the interaction between music theory, music history, performance practice, aesthetics, and related sciences. This multidisciplinary approach, with the accent on the interplay between music performance and music theory, is reflected in the contributions to this book. Thomas Christensen, in his contribution, shows how the development of tonal harmonic theory went hand in hand with the practice of thoroughbass. Both Robert Gjerdingen and Giorgio Sanguinetti focus on the Neapolitan tradition of partimento. Gjerdingen addresses the relation between the realization of partimenti and contrapuntal thinking, illustrated by examples of contrapuntal imitation and combination in partimenti, leading to the ‘partimentofugue’. Sanguinetti elaborates on the history of this partimentofugue from the early 18th until the late 19th century. Rudolf Lutz, finally, presents his use of partimenti in educational practice, giving examples of how reviving this old practice can give new insights to composers, conductors and musicians.

Thus, even postmodern and postmillennial concerns, far from seeming irrelevant to these operas, are instead given new perspectives by them, whilst the music and the dramatic situations have the multivalency to accept each refreshed pallet of interpretation without loss of their essential character. These operas seem perennially ‘new’. In exploring the evergreen qualities of Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro, this collection of studies does not shun approaches that have foundations in established theory, but refracts them through such problems as the tension between operatic tradition and psychological realism, the co-existence of multiple yet equal plots, and the antagonism between the tenets of tradition and the need for self-actualization. In exploring such themes, the authors not only illuminate new aspects of Mozart’s operatic compositions, but also probe the nature of musical analysis itself.

The process of practising is intrinsic to musical creativity. Practising may primarily be thought of as technical, but it is often also musically meaningful, including elements of interpretation, improvisation, and/or composition. The practice room can be a space in which to explore a field of creative possibilities; a place to experiment and to refine ideas. To date, the literature on practice has been primarily pedagogical and psychological. Little attention is paid to the significance of practice, and especially to the role of embodied experience – of understanding gained through doing – in the forming of musical ideas. The Practice of Practising is primarily concerned with considering practising as a practice in itself: a collection of processes that determines musical creativity and significance. The volume comprises four diverse case studies, in relation to music by J. S. The texts edited in this volume deal with angelology and anthropology, and particularly with the nature and the functions of immaterial substances like angels and the human rational soul. Marchia discusses such controversial issues as universal hylomorphism, i.e., whether angels and the rational soul are composed of both matter and form (q. 13), the immortality of the soul (qq. 18–19), and the nature and the object of the intellect and will (qq. 20, 21), as well as the functionality of the angelic intellect – whether angels understand through discursive reasoning (q. 23), and how they can speak with each other (q. 26). The problematic nature of the relationship between the material and the immaterial is approached through asking whether an angel can produce a material object (q. 22) and whether a material object can be the source of an angel’s understanding of that object (q. 25). A particularly interesting treatment concerns how angels, immaterial substances, can be in a place (q. 16); this treatment includes Marchia’s attempt to provide a physical theory explaining why an angel cannot move over some distance instantaneously. Throughout these fifteen questions, Marchia challenges the ideas of some of the best minds of the later Middle Ages, not only major figures of the thirteenth century like Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, Henry of Ghent, and Giles of Rome but also fourteenth-century authors like John Duns Scotus, Hervaeus Natalis, Walter Burley, and Peter Auriol.
