Since 1990, the ancient city of Sagalassos in southwestern Turkey has been the focus of an interdisciplinary archaeological research project coordinated by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The prehistory of the Eastern Desert of Egypt is not well understood. A Holocene Prehistoric Sequence in the Egyptian Red Sea Area: The Tree Shelter is an important contribution to our knowledge of the Epi-Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Predynastic occupation of the area. It presents the results of an excavation of a small rock shelter near Quseir, Egypt, which is one of the rare stratified sites in the Eastern Egyptian desert. The stratigraphic sequence starts around 8000 bp and continues until about 5000 bp. The archaeological material attests clear connections with the Nile Valley and the Western Desert during the wet Holocene period. Topics covered in the book include the site’s lithics and ceramics, microwear analysis of the lithic artefacts, and the woody vegetation of the Neolithic period. pierre m. vermeersch is Emeritus Professor at the Katholieke Universiteit
This work proposes a new approach to Egyptian Predynastic iconography, based essentially on a study of vases with complex painted decorations from the prehistoric Naqada culture. It describes and illustrates for the first time 650 of these objects–the widest collection yet to be studied–along with some unpublished material. The author fully explains the rules of composition and the implementation of the decoration, thus elucidating the image function as well as the origin of some iconographic themes of the Pharaonic period. The book’s original and instructive perspective defines the historic context, revealing a period getting ready for the emergence of writing and Pharaonic civilization.

Architectural concepts and styles seem to flourish from the most local of contexts to the global. This book investigates the regional, often conceived today as a late nineteenth-century phenomenon, primarily on account of the preservation and restoration movements that arose. An interdisciplinary approach to regionalism, as manifested not only in architecture but also in art and literature, necessitates a more thorough examination of the complexity and multilayered quality of the phenomenon. The research is limited in time to the nineteenth century plus the years leading up to the First World War, and in place to Western Europe, with an emphasis on Belgium, France and England, and to a lesser extent on the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. Derived from the workshop ‘The Sources of Regionalism’ (Ghent, 2004) held by the fwo research group World Views, Cultural Identities and Architecture in Western Europe, 1815-1940, the essays in this book examine the meaning of regionalism in architecture, art, and literature, its sources, and its cultural and historical background.

After a distinguished career of more than 35 years, Ignace Bossuyt retired as professor at the Musicology Department of the University of Leuven on October 1st 2007. As an internationally recognised leader in the field of later-16th-century music, Bossuyt consolidated the department’s reputation as a centre of excellence in renaissance music studies. This book examines a recurrent question in recent literature on the use of the photographic medium in contemporary art. It is concerned with the multiformity of ways the photograph manifests itself in diverse artistic practices today, and with the consequences of this situation for photography’s critical potential. Central to this discussion is the question whether photography has a hybrid or chameleonic character because it can be part of entirely different mixed-media works of art. The book also raises such questions as: Does the photo-image nowadays serve mainly as a useful tool to make a renewed kind of tableau, often marked by a rather noncommittal and ‘poetic’ visual imagery? When photographic practices aim at raising a critical debate on the internal workings of the artistic system itself or on broader social problems, is the photograph then able to distinguish itself from a merely ‘political’ statement or a pamphlet? ‘Love is joy with the accompanying idea of an external cause.’ Spinoza’s definition of love (Ethics Book 3, Prop. lix) manifests a major paradigm shift achieved by seventeenth century Europe in which the emotions, formerly seen as normative ‘forces of nature,’ were embraced by the new science of the mind. We are determined to volition by causes. This shift has often been seen as a transition from a philosophy laden with implicit values and assumptions to a more scientific and value-free way of understanding human action. But is this rational approach really value-free? Today we incline to believe that values are inescapable, and that the descriptivemechanical method implies its own set of values. Yet the assertion by Spinoza, Malebranche, Leibniz, and Enlightenment thinkers that love guides us to wisdom – and even that the love of a God who creates and maintains order and harmony in the world forms the core of ethical behaviour – still resonates powerfully with us. It is, evidently, an idea we are unwilling to relinquish. This collection of insightful essays emerged from two ‘ContactFora’ organized within the framework of the research project Actuality of the Enlightenment: The Moral Science of Emotions, conducted under the auspices of Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van Belgie voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten. In the process of completing his critical edition of Marcus of Orvieto’s Liber de Moralitatibus, Dr. Girard J. Etzkorn happened upon a set of questions attributed to Henry of Ghent at the end of Rome’s Bibliotheca Angelica codex 750. These questions are edited in this volume under the proviso ‘attributed to’ so that scholars may compare the texts with other works of the Ghentian master known to be authentic. Based upon some intitial comparisons Etzkorn concludes that the ten questions appear to be of two literary genres. The first six are best fitted into the category of Disputed Questions while Questions seven to ten are better characterized as Quodlibetal questions given their relative brevity and small number of objections ‘pro’ and ‘contra’. Moreover, the ten questions seem to be ‘selected’ questions and were not likely disputed at the same time. Henry Bate’s Speculum divinorum (ca. 1285-1302) is a huge philosophical encyclopedia in which the author depicts his Neoplatonic-Peripatetic world-view. Dwelling on a rich variety of Greek, Arabic, Hebrew and Latin sources, he thoroughly discusses all main issues of Aristotle’s natural philosophy (including psychology) and metaphysics, and systematically attempts to reconcile the Aristotelian perspective with the viewpoint of Plato and late ancient Platonists. Though deeply influenced by both Averroes and Aquinas, he is neither an Averroist nor a Thomist. Rather, Bate’s Mirror reflects Albert the Great’s ideal of the fiducia philosophantis, whose ‘intellect is enlightened in accord with heavenly beauty.’ •

Grâce à sa grande richesse, la métaphore platonicienne du miroir a été adoptée, amplifiée et élaborée dans l’Antiquité par une multitude d’auteurs, certes tous d’inspiration platonicienne, mais appartenant à la fois au paganisme et au christianisme. Lorsqu’on étudie cette métaphore dans le corpus philosophique, mystique et poétique en terre d’Islam, on constate qu’il ne s’agit pas d’une récurrence fortuite, d’un lieu commun, d’un archétype de la pensée humaine. Il s’agit au contraire de l’adoption d’un thème précis, toujours lié à un contexte platonicien malgré la pluralité des courants dans lesquels il apparaît. Les contributeurs au livre Miroir et Savoir se sont attachés à étudier les modalités selon lesquelles le thème platonicien du miroir est passé du paganisme et du christianisme à la culture arabo-musulmane, de la langue grecque et syriaque à l’arabe et au persan. Ils ont tenté de dévoiler les mécanismes de ces passages et d’en déterminer l’enjeu conceptuel. Cet ouvrage espère ainsi apporter une contribution au dossier de l’histoire de la réception du corpus philosophique grec dans le monde arabo-musulman.

Medieval translators played an important role in the development and evolution of a scientific lexicon. At a time when most scholars deferred to authority, the translations of canonical texts assumed great importance. Moreover, translation occurred at two levels in the Middle Ages. First, Greek or Arabic texts were translated into the learned language, Latin. Second, Latin texts became source-texts themselves, to be translated into the vernaculars as their importance across Europe started to increase. The situation of the respective translators at these two levels was fundamentally different: whereas the former could rely on a long tradition of scientific discourse, the latter had the enormous responsibility of actually developing a scientific vocabulary. The contributions in the present volume investigate both levels, greatly illuminating the emergence of the scientific terminology and concepts that became so fundamental in early modern intellectual discourse. The scientific disciplines covered in the book include, among others, medicine, biology, astronomy, and physics.

During the sixteenth century, the traditional act of dedicating a text took on a new meaning due to the wider dissemination of the printed book. As the dedication and other paratexts thus became an almost indispensable part of the publication, they merit careful examination by those who study the presentation and impact of any printed work in its context. Paratexts bridge the gap between the outside world of the reading public and the enclosed world of the book, and often present biographical information concerning the persons involved in the making of the book. In the present volume, general reflections as well as case studies in the field of paratexts to Latin works and to musical compositions on Latin texts consider and exemplify these as well as other aspects of paratexts. The multidisciplinary perspective further enriches the insight in form, function and nature of the dedicatory act in the sixteenth century. A synthesis of the nature of the sixteenth-century dedication is thus presented, relevant not only to Neo-Latinists and musicologists, but also to (book) historians, philologists, and others.
