uitgeeftraditie. Al sinds 1971 staat de uitgeverij garant voor wetenschappelijke publicaties van het hoogste niveau op uiteenlopende terreinen van onderzoek. Onze uitgaven worden onderworpen aan een strenge selectie op basis van ‘peer review’ en moeten steeds voldoen aan de internationale standaard voor wetenschappelijke kwaliteit om in aanmerking te komen voor publicatie in het fonds. Het is daarom vol trots dat wij u de nieuwe catalogus 2007 presenteren. Hierin vindt u onze nieuwe en meest recente titels in de volle breedte van het academisch spectrum, variërend van een beschouwing over het kritisch realisme van de vooraanstaande fotograaf Allan Sekula (p. 4) tot een diepgravende studie naar de herkomst van traditioneel geweven bananenvezels in Japan (p. 19) of een aangrijpende reconstructie van de – deels ontkende – wreedheden die plaatsvonden na de Duitse invasie in België in augustus 1914 (p. 29). Natuurlijk ontbreken in dit overzicht onze langlopende reeksen niet. Nieuwe delen in de series Ancient and Medieval Philosophy (p. 12-13), Mediaevalia Lovaniensia (p. 10-11) en Humanistica Lovaniensia (p. 15) tonen aan dat het gedachtengoed uit de oudheid en de middeleeuwen, evenals het neolatijn, nog altijd springlevend is. Graag maken wij van deze gelegenheid gebruik om u op de hoogte te brengen van onze samenwerking met Cornell University Press. Vanaf dit najaar (2007) zal Cornell de marketing, promotie en distributie van onze Engelstalige titels in de Verenigde Staten en Canada verzorgen. Wij hopen hiermee de zichtbaarheid en verkrijgbaarheid van onze boeken op de Amerikaanse markt te kunnen versterken. Henri Van Lier
Henri Van Lier’s contribution to photography is comparable to the work of the great modern classics: Walter Benjamin, André Bazin, André Malraux, John Berger, Susan Sontag, or Roland Barthes. Henri Van Lier’s is less wellknown, probably because he works and publishes in Belgium, but the Philosophy of Photography is a profoundly original and innovative reflector on both the formal peculiarities and the social, cultural, and anthropological functions of photography. Much more than other theoreticians, Van Lier succeeds in combining an astute sense of the detail with an extremely broad interest in the meaning of the medium for mankind. He analyzes photography by means of a new discipline which he coins as ‘anthropogeny’ and which studies the gradual emergence of what makes us human through the history of the species. The present translation of La Philosophie de la photographie (1983) allows Van Lier’s ideas to reach an Anglo-Saxon audience. On top of this, this publication has been enriched with a completely new set of illustrations made by sixteen young photographers, all trained by the Belgian photographer Geert Goiris. Their images represent both an homage to the author of Philosophy of Photography as well as a timely exemplification of the use-value of the ideas defended in the book.

For several decades now realism has been doomed to be relegated to the museum of premodern styles and devices, safely locked up in the backroom of 19th century art history. Similarly, in our post-modern times commitment in art has become highly confuse. Critical Realism in Contemporary Art wants to clearly position critical realism in the current art scene, making a strong plea for a critically engaged art, as it can be encountered most exemplary in the work of Allan Sekula. Sekula’s oeuvre features a number of characteristics whose combination makes it unique: his iconography rediscovers and reinvents the theme of labor and his photos, on the verge between art and documentary – thus creating a kind of proto-documentary, reflect on the possibilities for the visual arts today to deliver an ‘act of criticism’. Internationally known as one of the most prominent artists engaged in this debate, Sekula’s research methods allow us to discuss the ways art can be critical about contemporary social questions without succumbing into a plain or overtly partial political statement.
Belgian Surrealism is either reduced to one of its key figures (Magritte) or mixed up with the dominating French Surrealism, more precisely the Surrealism as ‘performed’ by André Breton. Yet Belgian Surrealism is completely different, for aesthetic as well as for non-aesthetic reasons. From an aesthetic viewpoint, the Belgian group refused the notion of ‘automatic writing’ and the dominant role of the ‘unconscious’. They preferred instead an extremely sophisticated use of rhetorical devices in order to program its subtle shock effects. From a non-aesthetic viewpoint, the Belgian group was much more radical than the French group. Finally, the Belgian group did not consider art as an instrument of political change, it wanted art itself to become politicized in a non-traditional manner. Collective Inventions significantly alters and widens current understandings of surrealism.

The art of illumination, usually associated with the Middle Ages, experienced a spectacular revival in nineteenth-century Western Europe. This completely different context gave the illuminations another import. The output of the lay and religious workshops reveals a great artistic, stylistic, technical and typological diversity. The works illuminated go far beyond the world of exceptional and precious manuscripts and include many occasional documents, as well as golden books and devotional images. Richly illustrated with unpublished masterworks, the present volume offers an overview of the important revival of medieval illumination. The fifteen authors do not limit their approach to the traditional questions of art history. Rather, they explore the historical, socio-cultural, ideological and religious components of the revival, which changed according to time and country, in order to understand the evolution and success of the art of illumination in the long nineteenth century.

Church buildings dominated the medieval towns. Higher and stronger than most buildings in town, they offered a venue for various kinds of activities. Primarily the faithful flocked towards the churches to attend masses. However, the use of sacred places was not restricted to religion. Secular authorities, the ruler, the town government, the trades or guilds also made use of these ecclesiastical buildings for practical or socio-political reasons. As such the sacred places were perceived to lend a kind of sacral aura to all proceedings taking place inside. Apart from a mere enumeration and description of the different uses eleven scholars explain why these sacred places were such appreciated venues for various kinds of secular activities, and why some churches and monasteries were more popular than others.

Evolution in knowledge is tributary to communication: exchange of knowledge leads to fresh findings. In the Middle Ages things were not different. The inheritance of ancient knowledge deeply influenced medieval thought. The writings of ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle reached medieval man primarily through translations. Translators made an interpretation of the source-text and their translations became the subject of commentaries. The second half of the thirteenth century is one of the most accomplished periods in the history of philosophy and theology. This book examines the important but largely neglected issue of the interrelation between Platonism and Stoicism in Ancient Philosophy. Several renowned specialists in the fields of Stoic and Platonic analyse the intricate mutual influences between Stoic and Platonic philosophers in the Hellenistic period, the Imperial Age, and after. Although it has been repeatedly claimed that the phenomenon addressed in this book could best be labelled eclecticism, it emerges from the various articles collected here that the situation is much more complicated. Far from being eclectics, most Stoics and Platonists consciously appropriated their material in order to integrate it into their own philosophical system. The dialogue between Platonists and Stoics testifies to active debate and controversy on central topics such as psychology, epistemology, physics, and ethics. This book will deepen our understanding of the dialogue between different philosophical schools in Antiquity. Henry of Ghent’s Quodlibet xv, his last Quodlibet before his death, was composed sometime after the fall of Acre (May 10, 1291) and Nicolas iv’s letter Illuminet super nos (sent on August 1, 1291), both of which are referred to in this Quodlibeta. The sixteen questions treat a range of issues, e.g. the immaculate conception, the omnipotence of God, the nature of an ‘instance’, the absolute and ordained powers of the pope and the nature of a just war. The text was reconstructed based upon manuscripts copied from a first Parisian university exemplar, manuscripts whose model was probably a second Parisian university exemplar, and a manuscript which was in the possession of Godfrey of Fontaines, whose model may have been a nearly completed version of what would ultimately be a source of the first Parisian exemplar.

Plutarch’s De latenter vivendo is the only extant work from Antiquity in which Epicurus’ famous ideal of an ‘unnoticed life’ (lathe biosas) is thematised as such. Moreover, the short rhetorical work provides a lot of interesting information about Plutarch’s polemical strategies and about his own philosophical convictions in the domains of ethics, politics, metaphysics, and eschatology. In this book, Plutarch’s anti-Epicurean polemic is understood against the background of the previous philosophical tradition. An examination of Epicurus’ own position is followed by a discussion of Plutarch’s polemical predecessors (Timocrates, Cicero, the early Stoics, and Seneca) and contemporaries (Epictetus), and by a systematical and detailed analysis of Plutarch’s own arguments. The lemmatic commentary offers additional information and parallel passages (both from Plutarch’s own works and from other authors) that cast a new light on the text.

In his manuscript catalogue of the Deventer Athenaeum Library Van Slee noticed in 1892 that the Mariad with great certainty could be ascribed to Cornelius Aurelius. Cornelius Aurelius (ca 1460 – before December 1531) was born in Gouda (The Netherlands) and studied in Deventer, Köln, Louvain and Paris. During his stay in Köln he started to write religious Latin poetry and even his friend Erasmus was impressed by the quality of his poetic writings. Bedaux’s edition of Cornelius Aurelius’ Mariad is based on the only remaining manuscript in Deventer. That manuscript contains an introductory letter of Cornelius Aurelius to Jacobus Faber and only the first of the three Decades. In 4452 lines of poetry Aurelius narrates the life of Mary until the 12 year old Jesus was found at the temple listening and talking to the teachers. Die Marias von Cornelius Aurelius features a clarifying introduction while the extensive reference notes provide a remarkable view into the world of Neo-Latin textual tradition. € 30,00

The Debate about Colour Naming in 19th Century German Philology is comprised of eleven essays illustrating the intensity of interest in colour naming and categorisation that arose in nineteenth century Germany. The themes of each chapter vary in their emphasis on particular theories which lie behind the ‘testing’ of the colour-naming capacities of ‘primitive people’ throughout the world, and which move towards new variants of the doctrine of ‘evolution.’ This selection of work directs itself towards the growing field of Psychology and the shifting ground on which it was to form the later debates about ‘colour naming and categorisation.’ The essays can be read from both a general and a specialist perspective. The Origins of Banana-fibre Cloth in the Ryukyus, Japan Katrien Hendrickx
The Japanese word bashôfu literally means ‘banana-fibre cloth’. Both the cloth and the clothing made from it are now considered important constituents of Okinawan identity. This special trait of Okinawan material culture was brought to attention by the Japanese Folk Craft Movement of the 1930s. After years of decline following World War II, the weaving and use of bashôfu saw a revival that accelerated after the return of Okinawa to Japan in 1972 and still continues. Although today bashôfu receives considerable attention because of its status since 1974 as one of Japan’s important intangible cultural properties, its origins and history had remained hidden. In this book Katrien Hendrickx searches for the origins of bashôfu in the Ryukyus, including the origins of ito bashô, the plant that provides the raw material, and studies the yarn-making methods and weaving techniques. She also focuses on why and how the Ryukyuan people adopted those techniques and introduced them into their own society. By careful analysis of all available sources, considered from viewpoints that sprang from fields as various as pure history, phytohistory, philology, ethnography, and folklore, Hendrickx convincingly proves that bashôfu was introduced in the Ryukyus from Southern China, and not from Southeast Asia as is commonly argued. Her overview of present-day bashôfu-weaving and its use also provides valuable insights into the situation of folk-craft within Okinawan society during the second half of the 20th century and up to the present-day. katrien hendrickx studied Japanese at Inalco (Paris, France). In 2006, she obtained a PhD degree in Japanese Studies at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). She currently works as a visiting researcher at the University of Ryukyus (Okinawa, Japan). A world of difference separates global politics in 1945 from 1965. Op het einde van de negentiende eeuw brandde de sociale kwestie in alle hevigheid los. De katholieke regeringen moesten nu wel wetgevende maatregelen nemen. Hoewel de technische inhoud van die wetten genoegzaam bekend is, geldt dat veel minder voor de onderliggende ideeën en argumentaties in sociaal-politieke debatten. Dit boek behandelt de politieke en wetenschappelijke theorievorming over sociale wetgeving in België in de periode rond 1900. Het wil illustreren dat sociaal beleid veel meer betekende dan een droog technisch antwoord op louter praktische uitdagingen. Ook sociaal-politieke filosofie en politieke cultuur speelden een rol bij het totstandkomen van sociale wetten.De politieke cultuur van de volle negentiende eeuw had, op sociaal-economisch vlak, gedweept met het principe van de ‘vrijheid van arbeid’. Voor de arbeiders op de werkvloer echter – zo luidde althans de kritiek – betekende die vrijheid van arbeid vaak een vergiftigd geschenk, … geen echte vrijheid, maar veeleer een geketende gevangenschap. Dat kwam door de veeleer atomistische inspiratie van die politiek. In de periode rond 1900 veranderde dat. Voortaan zou het politieke debat uitgedaagd worden door wat de auteur noemt een ‘holistische bekoring’. Het is die verschuiving in politieke cultuur die het boek nauwgezet bestudeert, het biedt een schets van een even boeiende als kronkelende weg, de grillige weg die werd afgelegd van individualistische ‘vrijheid van arbeid’ naar ‘georganiseerde en gesubsidieerde vrijheid’.
Deze bundel in de reeks kadoc-Studies verschijnt als vierde in een miniserie rond Levensrituelen. Eerder verschenen al Geboorte & doopsel (1996), Het vormsel (1991) en Het huwelijk (2000). Nu wordt de serie voltooid met de laatste fase in de levensloop: Dood en begrafenis. Het opzet van de miniserie bestond erin te beschrijven en na te gaan hoe, telkens bij de belangrijke scharniermomenten in de biografie van een persoon, rituelen worden aangewend die het uitzicht hebben van ‘rites de passage’. De vraagstelling van Dood & begrafenis gaat uit van het fenomeen dat, in het vooruitzicht van het levenseinde, bij de dood zelf, onmiddellijk daarop volgend en later, een serie van traditionele rituelen, gebruiken en verhalen de overweldigende ervaring van het sterven in kaart poogt te brengen, te ordenen, te beheersen, kortom er mee om te gaan op een menselijke wijze. De bundel benadert het fenomeen vanuit drie fasen. ‘Met de dood voor ogen’ gaat na hoe we aankijken tegen de dood, welke voorstellingen we hebben van het sterven. ‘Rituelen en zinduiding bij de dood zelf’ onderzoekt de omgang met het dode lichaam: welke rituelen worden aangewend, onder meer in het perspectief van een verrijzenisgeloof. ‘Rouwen en herinneren’ ten slotte bekijkt de verwerking van het afscheid van de overledene in het rouwproces en de herinnering.

Psychoanalysis claims that the individual human mind is structured by its childhood relationships with its parents. But the theory of attachment, evolutionary psychology and contemporary philosophy of mind have all recently re-introduced new dimensions of innateness into mental development and pathology. If attachment is an instinct, then what is the psychological status of the child’s relation to the mother? If the mind is in part a product of evolution, then how far down do the inhibitory mechanisms of the mind go? If the mind of the child is shaped by their encounter with a set of prohibitions, how, in the light of contemporary ‘cognitive science’ and philosophy of mind, can the child be conceived as ‘taking on’ a rule? How is the construction of the mind related to the normative ends of cognitive experience? Today, it is Lacanian psychoanalysis which most vigorously defends psychoanalytic theory and practice from the encroachment of the biological and ‘cognitive’ sciences. But a paradigm shift nevertheless appears to be underway, in which the classical psychoanalytic theories about the Oedipus complex, primary and secondary repression, sexual difference and psychosexuality, the role of symbols, etc, are being dismantled and reintegrated into a new synthesis of biological and psychological theories. In this collection of theoretical essays by philosophers and psychoanalysts, encounters are brought about between Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis on the one hand, and attachment theory, evolutionary psychology and philosophy of mind on the other.

Rehearsals describes what happened to Belgian civilians when three German armies invaded the country in August 1914. Nearly 6,000 residents were massacred and 25,000 homes intentionally destroyed, after extensive and organized looting. Several thousand Belgians were shipped to concentration camps in Germany, following forced marches and fake executions, and many women raped. The case has been made that the violence, which crescendoed between August 19th and 26th, was the result of a spontaneous outbreak of paranoia about ‘franc-tireurs,’ or civilian sharpshooters. Rehearsals provides evidence that the executions were part of a deliberate campaign of terrorism ordered by military authorities. Down to the present, accounts of the killing, looting, and arson have been dismissed as ‘atrocity propaganda,’ particularly in the U.K. and U.S. Rehearsals examines the ‘revisionist’ campaign that was able to discredit voluminous and compelling testimony about German war crimes. Beyond these considerations, Rehearsals aims simply to recover stories that have been overlooked by historians of World War I, and to commemorate the heroism as well as the suffering of the first victims of German aggression.

Van de dagen van Leopold II tot de dag dat koning Boudewijn Congo onafhankelijk verklaarde, was de Leuvense universiteit actief in de kolonie. Studenten van de Alma Mater vervoegden de ontdekkingsreizen van Stanley, namen deel aan de exploitatie van Katanga of sympathiseerden – in de jaren 1950 – met de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd. In die strijd speelde Leuven een voortrekkersrol met de Lovanium-universiteit die zij nabij Leopoldstad oprichtte. Op basis van archiefonderzoek en interviews brengt Ruben Mantels een portret van Lovanium, de universiteit onder de tropenzon. De spanningen tussen ‘blanken’ en ‘zwarten’, maar ook het dagelijkse leven op de campus komen aan bod. Naast het verhaal van Lovanium bericht dit boek over de veranderende kennis van Congo in Leuven. Het brengt het woelig onderwijstraject van ‘Congo’ doorheen allerhande collegeroosters en opleidingsprogramma’s in kaart, beschrijft baanbrekend wetenschappelijk onderzoek en doet het relaas van tropische expedities. De Leuvense wetenschap over Congo vertaalde zich in congressen, prijzen en publicaties, maar kreeg eveneens vorm in debatavonden en studiekringen van studenten. Zij nam toe, expandeerde en institutionaliseerde, om vanaf het midden van de jaren 1950 in snel tempo te dekoloniseren. Geleerd in de tropen is een geschiedenis van een universiteit en een kolonie, van ‘blanken’ en ‘zwarten’, van hoogleraren en rectoren; van kolonisatie en dekolonisatie, maar ook van tropische carrières en van de eigenaardigheden van Congolese botanica. Het boek vertelt over de faam van koloniale helden en over de pioniers van Lovanium en doet dit in een aantrekkelijke stijl, met een ruime keuze aan origineel beeldmateriaal. ruben mantels is wetenschappelijk medewerker aan de onderzoekseenheid Cultuurgeschiedenis na 1750 van de K.U.Leuven.
