Leafing through our Fall catalogue 2016 you will notice that the Utopia theme is well-represented. After all, it was in Leuven that the original publication of Thomas More’s Utopia was first published in 1516. In order to celebrate this 500th anniversary appropriately we are pleased to announce two compelling and inspiring books: Utopia & More (p. 12) and ‘A Truly Golden Handbook’ (p. 13). Thus, offering a panoramic view on the utopian tradition on the one hand, and a provocative and visionary look at the world of tomorrow on the other. We remain in a festive mood with the newest volume in the Orpheus Institute Series: 20 years of artistic research in music is marked by the publication of Discipline and Resistance (p. 15). Over the past two decades this new field of research has developed its own topoi and canon. Reflecting on the past, moreover, dovetails perfectly with an exploration of the future in this publication. A third joyful event to place in the limelight is our new collaboration with KANTL, the Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde. In 1963 werd de medische faculteit van de toen nog unitaire Leuvense universiteit gesplitst. Franstaligen en Nederlandstaligen volgden vanaf dan hun eigen koers. Aanvankelijk deelden zij nog de medische campus, maar nadat in 1968 de universiteit volledig werd gesplitst, verhuisden de Franstaligen naar Brussel. Intussen was de Nederlandstalige Faculteit Geneeskunde al aan een langdurig expansieproces begonnen. Van mensen en muizen belicht de ontwikkelingen die zich de voorbije halve eeuw onder tien decanen – van internist Jozuë Vandenbroucke tot neurochirurg Jan Goffin – aan die steeds uitbreidende Nederlandstalige Faculteit Geneeskunde hebben afgespeeld. De auteur haalt professoren en studenten voor het voetlicht, schetst de ontwikkelingen binnen de onderwijsopleidingen en de onderzoekslaboratoria, en gaat ook de ethische controverses en gezondheidsdebatten niet uit de weg. Vanzelfsprekend komt eveneens de relatie met de Leuvense universitaire ziekenhuizen aan bod, al verschijnt er over de geschiedenis van die zieken huizen in 2018 een andere uitgave door historicus Joris Vandendriessche. Liesbet Nys is als postdoctoraal medewerker verbonden aan de onderzoeksgroep Cultuurgeschiedenis vanaf 1750 van de KU Leuven.

Stedelijke groenruimtes spelen vandaag een cruciale rol in debatten over de leefbaarheid van steden. Sinds de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw al duikt de vraag naar stedelijk groen op als een beleidsthema. ‘Bomen zijn waardevolle bijkomstigheden’ gaat op zoek naar de veranderende betekenis van stedelijk groen in de moderne stad. Op basis van de casus Antwerpen onderzoekt Tritsmans in welke mate de stedelijke groenruimte onderhevig is aan veranderingen in typologie, morfologie en gebruik, maar ook hoe maatschappelijke debatten en de beleving van stedelijk groen elkaar beïnvloeden. De auteur zoomt in op de geplande stedelijke groenruimte vanuit het Antwerpse stedelijke beleid en plaatst deze tegen de achtergrond van de internationale stedenbouw. Aan de hand van de onderhandelingsprocessen en de fricties over groen in het stedelijk weefsel belicht Tritsmans de stedelijke actoren en wijzigende verhoudingen in de Antwerpse context. Tot slot komt ook de individuele beleving en het gebruik van groen door de stadsbewoners zelf aan bod en geeft de auteur een boeiende inkijk in de dagelijkse ervaring van groen in de stad. Rijkelijk geïllustreerd en met een zeer divers bronnenbestand biedt ‘Bomen zijn waardevolle bijkomstigheden’ de lezer een coherent en levendig beeld van de geschiedenis van stedelijk groen. ‘Bomen zijn waardevolle bijkomstigheden’ is een uitspraak van Edward Léonard, architectuurcriticus en medeoprichter van de KVNS (Antwerpen, 1915). Bart Tritsmans is doctor in de geschiedenis (Universiteit Antwerpen) en de ingenieurswetenschappen (Vrije Universiteit Brussel). Hij is projectleider tentoonstellingen en publicaties bij het Vlaams Architectuurinstituut (VAi).

Het einddoel van het geschiedeniso nderwijs is het historisch denken van jongeren bevorderen. Historisch denken houdt in dat je mens en maatschappij in een historische context situeert, en in een lange-termijnp erspectief. De volumes in deze nieuwe reeks, gericht op geschiedenisl eerkrachten en historici, zijn toegankelijk geschreven en verdiepen zich in cruciale aspecten van historisch denken.
Samenlevingen hebben een diepe drang om te herdenken en te herinneren. Zeker vandaag is het verleden alomtegenwoordig, en is er sprake van een ware memory boom. Collectieve herinnering is echter niet neutraal. Ze wordt ingezet in het nastreven van allerlei politieke, sociale, culturele en morele doelen. De noodzaak van een kritische houding tegenover herinnering dringt zich dan ook op. Herinneringen aan de Holocaust richt zich op de educatie over her innering, en analyseert het selectieve, politieke en evoluerende karakter van herinnering. Het boek onderzoekt de verschillende vormen van herinnering en de gespannen relatie tussen herinnering en geschiedenis. Via de analyse van onder meer films, stripverhalen, musea, monumenten en memorialen focussen de auteurs zich daarbij specifiek op de evolutie van de holocaustherinnering vanaf 1945, in Europa en in de Verenigde Staten. Bovendien krijgt de lezer bij elk hoofdstuk verschillende didactische scenario’s aangeboden, geschikt voor het secundair geschiedenisonderwijs. Kortom, een toegankelijk boekje voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in geschiedenis, en in het bijzonder een aanrader voor leerkrachten en al wie werkzaam is in de educatieve sector. Koen Lagae is medewerker aan de Specifieke Lerarenopleiding Geschiedenis van de KU Leuven, en leerkracht geschiedenis aan het Sint-Pieterscollege in Jette. Saartje Vanden Borre is doctor in de geschiedenis en wetenschappelijk medewerker aan de onderzoeksgroep Cultuurgeschiedenis na 1750 van de KU Leuven. Karel Van Nieuwenhuyse is docent geschiedenisdidactiek aan de KU Leuven, en coördinator van de Specifieke Lerarenopleiding Geschiedenis.

Milk Sauce and Paprika tells the story of Hungarian children who were sent to Belgium in the framework of a humanitarian project between 1923 and 1927. Based on a wide variety of sources such as official documents, contemporary newspapers, photographs, family correspondences, biographies and interviews, Hajtó examines the history of the BelgianHungarian child relief project and describes its social and cultural impacts on the families involved in both countries. This compelling story of one of the first mass European child migration movements offers new insights in the dynamics of national and religious communities. Furthermore, it sheds light on intimate family life and contemporary habits and values regarding parenting and co-parenting in the interwar period. Cutting across national and cultural borders, this monograph connects individual and collective memory with the experiences of childhood and migration. Vera Hajtó completed her PhD at the History Department of the Faculty of Arts, KU Leuven in 2013. She is an independent scholar based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Tableau Poetique is een tot voor kort onbekende tekst van de Gentse schilder-dichter Lucas d’Heere (1534–1584). Recent werd hij echter in een Engelse adellijke bibliotheek herontdekt door Frederica Van Dam. Het unieke handschrift bevat een reeks Franse gedichten, hoofdzakelijk sonnetten, gericht tot leden van de Engelse politieke elite in de periode 1569–1572. De collectie is zowel historisch als literair uiterst belangrijk. D’Heere blijkt in de hoogste Engelse kringen veel nadrukkelijker werkzaam geweest te zijn dan tot nu toe werd vermoed. Zijn politieke rol in de Nederlandse Opstand moet dan ook geherwaardeerd worden. In deze uitgave situeert Frederica Van Dam de dichtende schilder Lucas d’Heere in het zestiende-eeuwse Engeland, daarna volgt een geannoteerde teksteditie van het volledige handschrift door Werner Waterschoot. Tableau Poetique, dat een onmisbare schakel vormt in de evolutie van het sonnet als dichtvorm binnen de Nederlandse literatuur, wordt met deze uitgave voor het eerst beschikbaar gemaakt. Frederica Van Dam is master in de kunstgeschiedenis. Zij werkt aan een proefschrift over schilders uit de Nederlanden, werkzaam in Engeland. Werner Waterschoot is ereprofessor Universiteit Gent en erelid van de Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal en Letterkunde.

Vijfhonderd jaar geleden legde Dirk Martens in Leuven Utopia ter perse. Om de verjaardag van dit meesterwerk van Thomas More (1477/78–1535) passend te vieren organiseert de Leuvense Universiteitsbibliotheek in het najaar van 2016 een tentoonstelling. Die biedt een portret van More als humanist, staatsman en polemist, belicht zijn contacten met de Nederlanden en staat stil bij zijn terechtstelling en postume faam. Daarnaast gaat de tentoonstelling uitgebreid in op Utopia zelf en tal van bekende en minder bekende utopische werken. Prikkelende essays over al deze onderwerpen en gedetailleerde beschrijvingen van de tentoongestelde objecten vindt de lezer in de bundel Utopia & More. Thomas More, de Nederlanden en de utopische traditie. En voor wie nóg meer wil, bevat het boek ook een aantal extra lemmata die de context schetsen en meer werken voorstellen. Dirk Sacré is doctor in de Klassieke Filologie en hoogleraar Latijn aan de KU Leuven, met specialisatie Neolatijn. Erik De Bom (1983) is als intellectueel historicus en politiek theoreticus verbonden aan het Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte van de KU Leuven. In 2016 is hij van dichtbij betrokken bij tal van activiteiten die de 500ste verjaardag van Mores Utopia gedenken. Demmy Verbeke is hoofd van Artes, de bibliotheek die vooral het onderzoek en onderwijs aan de Faculteit Letteren van de KU Leuven ondersteunt. Gilbert Tournoy is gewoon hoogleraar Latijn aan de KU Leuven. Hij is specialist op het domein van het humanisme en de Neolatijnse letterkunde.

Les essais composant Sémiotique et vécu musical montrent dans quelle direction se dirigent les recherches de nos jours. L’ analyse de l’expérience musicale, par exemple, détermine la réception affective, peut provoquer l’ébranlement intérieur, transformer le temps vécu, changer et déterminer les structures de l’expérience ainsi que l’expérientialité. Conceptual, Surrealist, Pictorial is the first in-depth study of the use of photography by Belgian artists from the 1960s until the early 1990s. During these three decades, photography generally underwent a major evolution with regard to its status as a gallery-focused fine art practice. Liesbeth Decan explores ten representative case studies, which are contextualized within and compared with contemporary international artistic trends. Successively, she addresses the pioneering use of photography within Conceptual art (represented by Marcel Broodthaers, Jacques Charlier, and Jef Geys), the heyday of Photoconceptualism in Belgium (represented by Jacques Lennep, Jacques Lizène, Philippe Van Snick, and Danny Matthys), and the transition from a conceptual use of photography towards a more pictorial, tableau-like approach of the medium (represented by Jan Vercruysse, Ria Pacquée, and Dirk Braeckman). Ultimately, the selected case studies reveal that photo-based art in Belgium appears to be characterized by a unique uniting of elements particularly from Conceptual art, Surrealism, and the pictorial tradition. His influence as a designer not only spread fast globally, but also played a leading part in the transformation of material culture from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Pugin’s work has been comprehensively reevaluated over the last decade. In this volume sixteen leading scholars from across the globe discuss Pugin’s direct influence on church architecture and furnishing. Charity is a word that fits well in the history of religion and churches, whereas the concept of social reform seems to belong more to the vocabulary of the modern welfare states. Christian charity found itself, during the long nineteenth century, within the maelstrom of social turmoil. In this context of social unrest, although charity managed to confirm its relevance, it was also subjected to fierce criticism, as well as to substitute state-run forms of social care and insurance. The history of the welfare states remained all too blind to religion. This fourth volume in the series ‘Dynamics of Religious Reform’ unravels how the churches in Britain and Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium shaped and adjusted their under standing of poverty. It reveals how they struggled with the ‘social question’ and often also with the modern nation states to which they belonged. Either in the periphery of public assistance or in a dynamic interplay with the state, political parties and society at large, the churches reinvented their tradition as providers of social relief. Leen Van Molle is full professor of social history and member of the research group MoSa (Modernity and Society, 1800–2000) at KU Leuven. Her research focuses on the history of Belgian and European social identities, social movements and social policy, and in particular the history of the rural world.

Radulphus Brito’s Quaestiones super Priora Analytica Aristotelis is a major work written in the early 1300s which treated Aristotle’s text devoted to the theory of the syllogism. Brito, perhaps one of the most influential medieval thinkers known as the Modistae, examines both categorical and hypothetical syllogisms. In his text, based on six known manuscripts which are complete or nearly complete, Brito was critical of many of the theories of his contemporary, Simon of Faversham. It should also be mentioned that Brito edited his work several times. There are at least two versions which indicate Brito returned to this material during his long career at the university in Paris. This volume is the first critical text edition of Brito’s Quaestiones super Priora Analytica Aristotelis and will therefore be of great interest to those studying the history of logic and its development during the medieval period. Gordon A. Wilson is professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He is also a visiting professor at the De Wulf-Mansion Centre of the Institute of Philosophy of KU Leuven.
