Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse syntaxis J.M. van der Horst
In dit monumentale naslagwerk bestudeert Joop van der Horst, hoogleraar Nederlandse taalkunde aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse syntaxis. Op heldere en gestructureerde wijze beschrijft Van der Horst ontwikkelingen in de zinsbouw vanaf de vroegst overgeleverde teksten (Wachtendonckse Psalmen, Williram) tot aan het hedendaagse Nederlands. Alle stadia werden zorgvuldig geattesteerd met citaten en voorbeeldzinnen, alle voorzien van bronvermelding, om aan te tonen welke constructies gebruikelijk waren in de beschreven periode. Deze tweedelig gebonden set is onderverdeeld in zeven ‘boeken’ die elk een bepaalde periode in de ontwikkeling van het Nederlands beschrijven: i Oudnederlands, ii Middelnederlands 1200–1350, iii Middelnederlands 1350–1500, iv 16de eeuw, v 17de eeuw, vi 18de eeuw, vii 19de, 20ste en 21ste eeuw. Meest bijzonder is de strikt parallelle opbouw van de afzonderlijke boeken. In elke periode zijn de verschillende onderdelen van de syntaxis steeds in exact dezelfde volgorde beschreven om een ‘horizontale’ lezing doorheen de tijd mogelijk te maken. Naast een overzicht per periode, krijgt de lezer daarmee inzicht in de diachronische ontwikkeling van de syntaxis. Ook opzoeken en vergelijken zijn sterk vereenvoudigd. j.m. van der horst is hoogleraar Nederlandse taalkunde aan de K.U.Leuven. Van zijn hand verschenen o.a. Kleine Middelnederlandse syntaxis (1981), Analytische taalkunde (1995) (samen met K. van der Horst), Geschiedenis van het Nederlands in de 20ste eeuw (1999) (samen met A. Quak), Inleiding Oudnederlands (2002) en Het einde van de standaardtaal; een wisseling van Europese taalcultuur (2008).
Niet eerder werd een vergelijkbaar instrument ontwikkeld voor de beschrijving van en het onderzoek naar de Nederlandse zinsbouw. De Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse syntaxis is een onmisbaar referentiewerk voor eenieder met belangstelling voor de wortels van de Nederlandse taal.

De economische ontwikkeling van de Antwerpse haven vanaf 1900 Reginald Loyen
De haven van Antwerpen telt vandaag de dag 63.000 banen en genereert meer dan 3% van het bruto binnenlands product. Over de manier waarop dit economische complex tot stand kwam, is maar weinig bekend – behalve dat er sinds 150 jaar een bijna explosieve groei moet hebben plaatsgevonden. Haven in de branding analyseert voor het eerst het tijdspad, de oorzaken en gevolgen van deze groei op basis van goederenstromen en de toegevoegde-waardecreatie. Zo wordt de waarde van de Antwerpse staaltrafiek verduidelijkt, net als de impact van de tonnage balans, de mythe van de ‘spoorweghaven Antwerpen’ en het ‘Belgische’ karakter van de overslag. Ook de groei bij internationale concurrenten Rotterdam en Hamburg komt daarbij aan bod. Centraal staat de vraag hoe de haven van Antwerpen goederenstromen kon aantrekken. Was de haven gelijk een rots in de branding overgeleverd aan de grillen van de stroming, of hadden havenarbeiders en –bestuurders invloed op de richting en de sterkte van de stroom?

De herontdekking van het Romeinse recht aan het einde van de 11e eeuw markeert het begin van de Europese rechtstraditie. Tijdens de late Middeleeuwen en de Nieuwe Tijd groeide de rechtsgeleerdheid uit tot een autonome en goed ontwikkelde wetenschap die doordrong tot in de verste uithoeken van Europa. Hoewel de verschillende Europese landen vervolgens ieder hun eigen rechtsstelsels ontwikkelden, blijven zij op Engeland na alle schatplichtig aan de Romeinse traditie. For all archaeological artefactual evidence, the study of the provenance, production technology and trade of raw materials must be based on archaeometry. Whereas the study of the provenance and trade of stone and ceramics is already well advanced, this is not necessarily the case for ancient glass. The nature of the raw materials used and the geographical location of their transformation into artefacts often remain unclear. Currently, these questions are addressed by the use of radiogenic isotope analysis. With the specific information the technique provides, archaeologists can further their understanding of the organization of ancient glass production, based not only on typo-morphological features but also on exact scientific methods. The book captures the state of the art in this rapidly advancing field. It includes methodological papers on isotope analysis, innovative applications of several isotope systems to current questions in glass and glaze research, and advances in the knowledge of the economy of vitreous materials.

The Stadsbibliotheek of Brugge houses a manuscript (ms. 510, f. 227ra237vb) that holds a short logical text on the Syncategoremata, e.g. words that are not subjects or predicates in proposition. In this manuscript the text is ascribed to Henry of Ghent, who was a leading thinker of the second half of the thirteenth century. The highly interesting text contains some typical themes of Henry of Ghent, e.g. the distinction between esse essentiae and esse existentiae, which further supports the attribution to Henry. If it is the case that the text is by Henry, it shows that Henry had much more technical knowledge of logic and semantics than is often imagined. In the critical study which precedes the critical edition it is shown that the text was influenced by the logical works of Peter of Spain.

Francis of Marchia (born ca. 1290) was a highly innovative thinker. Recent work has highlighted facets of his philosophical theology, natural philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and metaphysics that show his creativity and deserve more study. A lively discussion of aspects of Marchia’s thought can be traced in the second quarter of the fourteenth century, but because Marchia’s works are for the most part unprinted, scholars have been hampered in their efforts to reconstruct his thought, let alone trace its influence. This new series of critical editions of Francis of Marchia’s most important works will go a long way to improving that situation. Marchia’s major works are versions of his Sentences commentaries, most of which will be published as part of this new Leuven University Press series, and which include the following: • Scriptum on book I of the Sentences (expected publication 2010–2011) • Commentary on book II of the Sentences (expected publication 2008–2009) • Commentaries on book III of the Sentences • Commentary on book IV of the Sentences • Theological and Philosophical Questions

This commentary exists in two versions: The major version is contained in 17 manuscripts and the critical edition of it is being prepared by a team of specialists led by Prof. Tiziana Suarez-Nani of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. A minor version is found in one Vatican manuscript and is being edited by Prof. Em. Girard J. Etzkorn. The texts edited in this volume all deal with creation, and investigate such central philosophical and theological issues as action, production, and causality, being and nothingness, the nature of time, God’s relation to the world he created, and the distinction between God’s creation and God’s conservation of the world. Typical of this section of Sentences commentaries is a discussion of the eternity of the world (q. 12), in which Marchia defends the (counterfactual) possibility of the world’s eternality as well as the possibility of an actual infinite. Somewhat more unusual for this part of a medieval Sentences commentary is Marchia’s highly detailed discussion of the problem of universals and the validity of syllogistic argumentation, all of this part of Marchia’s attempt to determine whether creation can be demonstrated about God (q. 1). Throughout these twelve questions, Marchia challenges the ideas of some of the later Middle Ages’ best minds, including Peter Auriol, Durand of St. Pourçain, John Duns Scotus, Henry of Ghent, and Giles of Rome. t. suarez-nani is Ordinary Professor of Philosophy (Medieval Philosophy and Ontology) at the University of Fribourg, Fribourg, Switzerland.
