De financiële crisis in 2008 en de daaropvolgende ongeziene inzinking van de economische activiteit brachten de economie volop in de belangstelling. De gebeurtenissen toonden aan dat de behoefte aan economen vandaag groter is dan ooit. De economische realiteit is complex en roept vele vragen op. Gilles Deleuze is among the twentieth century’s most important philosophers of difference. De periode tussen de Eerste en de Tweede Wereldoorlog kende intense maatschappelijke spanningen. De moderniteit was op kruissnelheid gekomen en riep tegengestelde reacties op, gaande van radicale omarming tot reactionaire verwerping. Politieke democratisering botste op antidemocratische reacties en nieuwerwetse tendensen in het huwelijks- en gezinsleven lokten antimoderne kritiek uit. In De levenskracht der bevolking nemen Nederlandse en Vlaamse historici, sociologen, economen en demografen een reeks thema’s onder de loep rond ‘volk’, huwelijk en gezin, leven en dood tijdens het interbellum. Ze doen dit vanuit actuele invalshoeken en met verrassende bronnen en originele methoden. Tijdens deze periode woedde in de westerse wereld een debat over ‘de bevolkingskwestie’. Een aantal demografische evoluties werd in brede kringen gelezen als een teken dat het met de westerse cultuur de verkeerde kant uitging en dat een aantal waarden en normen dreigde verloren te gaan. De belangrijkste thema’s uit die tijd staan ook vandaag (opnieuw) op de maatschappelijke agenda: lage vruchtbaarheid, vergrijzing en internationale migratie.

Bouwen aan een nieuwe thuis gaat op zoek naar de cultivering van de huiselijkheid tijdens het interbellum. Het boek leidt de lezer rond in het huis en toont hoe woonpraktijken evolueerden na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Wonen blijkt daarbij geen louter privaat gegeven dat alleen plaatsvond achter de gesloten deuren van het huis. Tijdens de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw groeide de wooncultuur van verschillende sociale groepen uit tot een belangrijk maatschappelijk thema dat zowel architecten, het sociale middenveld als politici aanging. Ondertussen boekte de huishoudtechnologie vooruitgang en verbeterde de technologie van het bouwen, waardoor het wonen ook vanuit commercieel oogpunt interessant werd. Vanuit thematische hoofdstukken, die telkens zijn opgehangen aan een kamer van het huis, belicht Bouwen aan een nieuwe thuis hoe technologie, politiek-maatschappelijke ideologie, privacy, landelijke idylle, economie en ‘gender’ op elkaar inhaakten en vormgaven aan het wonen van verschillende sociale groepen.

Lessen in goed wonen werpt een licht op een bijzondere vorm van woonadvies, eigen aan de naoorlogse periode in België. Het boek introduceert de lezer in een breed debat over zogenaamd ‘goed’ of ‘beter’ wonen. Een hele reeks geëngageerde gesprekspartners waren hierbij betrokken: overheidsinstellingen, architecten, designers, beroepsorganisaties, socioculturele verenigingen, producenten en bouwmaatschappijen. Talrijke tentoonstellingen, boeken, artikels, lezingen en lessenreeksen waren bedoeld om de bezoeker, lezer of toeschouwer te informeren en ‘op te voeden’ inzake wooncultuur. Het naoorlogse debat over ‘goed wonen’ was geworteld in het interbellum, maar kende een uitgesproken nieuwe dynamiek onder invloed van de politieke en maatschappelijke evoluties, de woningnood, de industrialisatie en de vernieuwingen in de bouwsector, het meubelbedrijf en de huishoudtechnologie. Het boek bespreekt de inhoud van de vernieuwde educatieve vertogen en in het bijzonder de hieraan gekoppelde ruimtelijke modellen voor de woning. Het laat ook zien hoe de woonvoorlichting omstreeks 1958 – het jaar van de wereldtentoonstelling in Brussel – onder toenemende druk kwam te staan. fredie floré is burgerlijk ingenieur-architect en doctor in de ingenieurswetenschappen: architectuur. Joop van der Horst is een begrip. En dat al heel lang. Zijn stukken zijn altijd verrassend, eigenzinnig, to the point en met veel humor. Ze zijn bovendien zo verbluffend eenvoudig geschreven en zo aansprekend dat je vergeet dat het om belangrijke en netelige onderwerpen gaat. Taal is iets van iedereen. Maar de meningen over taal staan vaak tegenover elkaar. Vooral als het gaat om taalverandering, om normen en waarden, om de standaardtaal, om onderwijs en literatuur. Al die onderwerpen komen aan de orde in deze bundeling van eerder verschenen artikelen. Sommige, zoals ‘De Croma-verandering’ of ‘Het nieuwe krijgen’ zijn klassiekers. Andere, zoals ‘De ezels in de film’ of ‘Mortier’ zijn pareltjes die verschenen in een obscuur studentenblaadje of in een krant van acht jaar geleden en zijn daardoor nagenoeg onvindbaar geworden. In Met het oog op morgen komen ze allemaal weer boven water. In deze stukken is niets van schoolmeesterij. Wie wil weten ‘hoe het moet’, kan beter iets anders lezen. Joop van der Horst schrijft voor zelfdenkende lezers: die worden aan het denken gezet, uitgenodigd tot verwondering of geprikkeld tot tegenspraak. Maar nooit laten deze stukken de lezer onberoerd.

In Lyotard’s opinion ‘the work pays homage to the visible marvel and bears witness to the visual enigma’. Lyotard is the first to see through the subtle variety of meanings in Sam Francis’s use of colour. This new edition reprints the English text, which is no longer available, face to face with the previously unpublished French original. It also reproduces in full colour all 42 paintings commented upon by Lyotard.

Despite our stereotypical ideas on photographic images as a snapshots (slices of time), photography is fundamentally a timebased medium. The relationships between photography and time are manifold: time can be directly represented within the image, it can be its theme and philosophical horizon, but it can also represent the global framework in which photographic practices develop and change through time. The capacity to mount stone tools in or on a handle is considered an important innovation in past human behaviour. The insight to assemble two different materials (organic and inorganic) into a better functioning entity indicates the presence of the required mental capacity and technological expertise. Although the identification of stone tool use based on microscopic analysis was introduced in the 1960s, distinguishing between hand-held and hafted tool use has remained a more difficult issue. This volume introduces a methodology, based on a systematic, in-depth study of prehension and hafting traces on experimental stone artefacts, which allows their recognition in archaeological assemblages. The author proposes a number of distinctive macro- and microscopic wear traits for identifying hand-held and hafted stone tools and for identifying the exact hafting arrangement. Tested hafting arrangements vary according to the articulation between stone tool and handle, and to the raw materials and fixation agents used. Tool uses include various motions and worked materials. This largely experimental investigation concludes in a blind testing of the reliability of the method itself, showing that a wider application of the designed method has the potential to contribute significantly to our understanding of technological changes and evolutions and past human behaviour. veerle rots is Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Fund for Scientific Research – Flanders and an invited lecturer at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
Lapis Lazuli from the Kiln examines the history of the first glass, from its early sporadic occurrence, through the height of its production in the late second millennium BC, to its disappearance at the end of that millennium. The book draws on an exceptionally wide range of sources including ancient texts detailing recipes and trade in glass, iconographic depictions in tombs and temples, archaeological excavation of the most important sites including Amarna and Qantir, and the description of the glass objects themselves. The area covered includes the heart of glassmaking and use in Egypt and the Near East, as well as those areas were glass might have been traded, i.e. the Levant and the Mycenaean Aegean. The life of the glassmaker, his place in society and relationship to other industries are also considered. The book especially details the use of scientific analysis to provide information for the reconstruction of the history of this glass and highlights the importance of analysis in validating or challenging archaeological and textual interpretations. Although describing the most up to date scientific techniques and interpretations, it is written from a non-technical viewpoint and includes systematic glossaries detailing the technical terminology used as well as the most important sites, object types and periods. The book is designed to be a specific study for the student of archaeology demonstrating the general themes of how scientific analysis can assist in the reconstruction of ancient material culture and the society in which it was used. andrew shortland is Senior Lecturer and Director of the Centre for Archaeological and Forensic Analysis at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. This monograph presents the comprehensive report of the excavations of the Belgian Middle Egypt Prehistoric Project at the site of Taramsa 1, near Qena in Upper Egypt. Human groups have exploited chert cobbles at this locale throughout the entire Middle Stone Age. The major Activity Phases at the site are identified with the aid of a series of chronometric dates. The various excavation sectors are meticulously described, both their stratigraphy and the spatial layout of the lithic production activities. One of the most significant finds at the site was the burial of a modern human child. A chapter is devoted to the description of the stratigraphic context of this burial and its dating. The technological analysis establishes Taramsa 1 as a key site in North-east Africa, bearing witness to a long sequence of change culminating in an Upper Palaeolithic blade technology. Most significant is the dating of the earliest stage of the transition, at around 60,000 years ago, thus suggesting that the Lower Nile Valley was an eary core area for the origin of the Upper Palaeolithic of Eurasia. The text is supplemented with numerous sections and plans, as well as artefact illustrations and photographs.

The harmonisation of company law has always been on the agenda of the European Union. Besides the protection of third parties affected by business transactions, the founders had two other objectives: first, promoting freedom of establishment, and second, preventing the abuse of such freedom. On the basis of the so-called Winter Group Report, the Commission wrote its Company Law Action Plan, which was issued on 21 May 2003. Now, six years later, a revisit is appropriate. This book presents five papers on the main priorities of the Action Plan: capital and creditor protection, corporate governance, one share one vote, financial reporting, and corporate mobility. The book also includes responses and ensuing discussions by reputed European company law experts.

The soul-body problem was among the most controversial issues discussed in 13th century Europe, and it continues to capture much attention today as the quest to understand human identity becomes more and more urgent. What made the discussion about this problem particularly interesting in the scholastic period was the tension between the traditional dualist doctrines and a growing need to affirm the unity of the human being. This debate is frequently interpreted as a conflict between the ‘new’ philosophy, conveyed by the rediscovered works of Aristotle and his followers, and doctrinal requirements, especially the belief in the soul’s immortality. However, a thorough examination of Parisian texts, written between approximately 1150 and 1260, leads us to conclusions which may seem surprising. In this book, the study and edition of some little-known texts of Hugh of St-Cher and his contemporaries reveals an extremely rich and colourful picture of the Parisian anthropological debate of the time. This book also offers an opportunity to reconsider some received views concerning medieval philosophy, such as the conviction that the notion of ‘person’ did not play any major role in the anthropological controversies. The study covers a wide range of authors, from Gilbert of Poitiers to Thomas Aquinas, and it is partly based on previously unedited material, published for the first time in the Appendix. magdalena bieniak holds a PhD in Philosophy (University of Padua and University of Paris IV – Sorbonne). She holds a research fellowship at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Padua.
In 2009 was het 550 jaar geleden dat Adriaan van Utrecht, de enige paus uit de Lage Landen, in Utrecht het levenslicht zag. Hij werd na een uiterst succesvolle carrière aan de Leuvense universiteit benoemd tot raadsheer en opvoeder van Karel V, die hem vervolgens als zijn vertegenwoordiger naar Spanje stuurde. Daar vernam hij in februari 1522 dat hij tot paus was verkozen. In Rome werd hij onder meer belast met de hervorming van de curie en de bestrijding van het lutheranisme. In deze catalogus komen verschillende aspecten van deze boeiende figuur aan bod, zoals zijn wetenschappelijke activiteit, zijn verhouding tot Erasmus en tot Luther, en zijn entourage die overwegend uit de Nederlanden stamde. Daarnaast wordt ook ruim aandacht besteed aan het ‘Nachleben’ van deze paus in de biografische traditie en aan de portretten op munten, penningen en gravures. Vrijwel al het materiaal dat hier wordt beschreven, is afkomstig uit de rijke collecties van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België te Brussel en van de Centrale Universiteitsbibliotheek en de Maurits-Sabbebibliotheek van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Recent wetenschappelijk onderzoek maakt het mogelijk het beeld van deze paus als een kleurloos en onbeduidend pontificaat te corrigeren tot een voorloper van de contrareformatie.

Omstreeks 1900 maakte de Leuvense fotograaf Edouard Morren een unieke fotoreportage over de Leuvense universiteitsgebouwen. De 78 foto’s werden ingebonden in een luxueus fotoalbum, dat nu op het Leuvense universiteitsarchief wordt bewaard. Deze facsimile-uitgave maakt het album nu toegankelijk voor een ruim publiek en voorziet het van commentaar. Van heel wat getoonde interieurs waren geen afbeeldingen bekend. Het boek biedt niet alleen een vrij volledig overzicht van de hele universiteit, het besteedt ook ruim aandacht aan de laboratoria, die tot nog toe vaak onderbelicht bleven. De foto’s laten ons toe een rondgang te maken langs de toenmalige universiteitsgebouwen: auditoria (rechtsgeleerdheid, scheikunde, dierkunde, burgerlijke bouwkunde), laboratoria (scheikunde, natuurkunde), tekenzalen en snijzalen, leeszalen en boekerijen, de universitaire apotheek, de melkerij en de brouwerij van het Landbouwinstituut. Er zijn gezichten op gebouwen die op het moment van de opname nog gloednieuw waren: het Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte en het Leo xiii-Seminarie (1893–1899), het laboratorium in het Vesaliusinstituut (1897), de Kraaminrichting aan de Frederik Lintsstraat (1897) en de nieuwe vleugel van het Justus-Lipsiuscollege (1899). Het album kwam tot stand op het breukvlak van twee eeuwen, toen de verwetenschappelijking van het academisch onderwijs zich voltrok en tot uiting kwam in de ruimtelijke ontwikkeling van de universiteit. Around 1900 the Louvain photographer Edouard Morren made a unique photo report of the university buildings. The 78 photographs were bound in a luxurious album, which is now preserved at the Louvain university archives. This new facsimile edition reproduces the numerous views of the most important sites of the university as well as photo’s of interiors that had never been documented before.
