Welcome to Vestmannaeyjar On behalf of Vestmannaeyjar I would like to welcome you to our beautiful Island. Ever since settlers arrived in late 8th century the community has relied on its natural resources, in particular the fishing, the variety of birds and farming the land. In Vestmannaeyjar you can choose between variety of activities, entertainment or simply enjoy the exceptional nature of the Island. You will certainly experience a spectacular and contrasting nature. The authentic Island, Heimaey, consists of palagonite tuff, rough lava and a lively town populated by 4,300 inhabitants. When climbing the hills or sailing close to them, you will learn that the cliffs are filled with birds, such as puffins, gannets, kittiwakes and guillemots. You can also take a walk in the untouched rough and sharp-edged lava or learn about the village that went under the lava during the volcanic eruption in 1973, which shaped both the Island and the way of living. After a long day you can relax in the multi-use swimming pool, play golf in one of the most beautiful golf course in Iceland or enjoy the variety of restaurants and bars. Visit the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary! Situated in Klettsvik Bay, Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar, the Sanctuary will be home to two beluga whales who are moving from an aquarium in China to a more natural environment in the ocean. Why visit Vestmannaeyjar? Do you want to see a volcano, lava, puffins, beluga whales and visit an island that is unique in nature, history and wildlife? Then you should definitely not miss out on Vestmannaeyjar. What you can do: In Vestmannaeyjar you can hike up a volcano that erupted only about 50 years ago and even spot houses that are still under the lava. At Eldheimar volcano museum you can learn all about the volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar and
Surtsey island that is the youngest island in the world created in a volcanic eruption underneath the ocean in 1963. You can climb Heimaklettur, our highest mountain on the island, the highest peak is though no more than 283 meters but from there you can enjoy magnificent view to the mainland or spot our islands surrounding us. You can sail around the main islands and even to other islands in our archipelago and into mystic caves that have amazing acoustic.
You can check out the puffins that nest on Heimaey and surrounding islands during the summertime but Vestmannaeyjar is considered to be one of the largest puffin colonies in the world. Two of the newest inhabitants in Vestmannaeyjar are our beluga whales that are part of the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary by the harbour. The Sanctuary also houses rescued puffins and an aquarium called Griðarstaður Mjaldra. At Stórhöfði you will find the windiest place in Iceland and some even say the windiest spot in the whole of Europe.
Close by Stórhöfði we have a black sand beach in a cove called Klauf. Here you can walk around or even be a true viking at heart and take a swim in the ocean but note there is no hot tub to warm you up afterwards so maybe the swimming pool is a better choice. You can walk around our island and into lava fields and there are various hiking spots and trails around the island. But you can also rent a bike or hop onto a bus and ride around the island in scheduled bus tours with guidance.

Believe it or not but in Vestmannaeyjar we have the largest elephant in the world. Well, it is not alive but this is a rock formation that is one of the most photographed spots in the islands. Visit Skansinn where you can see where the lava flow stopped in 1973. At Skansinn you will find replica of a canon from the Turkish raid in 1627. The raid had a huge impact on the whole nation. A replica of a Norse timber church is also located at Skansinn. This is the only one of its kind in Iceland and there is also Landlyst, the second oldest building on the islands, now housing a
small yet interesting medical museum. You can visit the church Landakirkja, which is the oldest building of the island and if you want to know more about our history and culture you should definitely check out the Folk Museum, Sagnheimar. Vestmannaeyjar has an amazing 18-hole golf course that has been chosen by Golf Digest as one of Europe’s 200 most enjoyable courses.

Dip into our swimming pool, where you can swim in salt water, relax in hot tubs or sauna or take a thrill ride in one of our waterslides, one even ends in a trampoline that shoots you up into the air before you land in a pool. Social Events in Vestmannaeyjar We in Vestmannaeyjar love to celebrate life and we have several social events on the island, which people from the mainland flock to. If you want to celebrate with us you are of course welcome. In the beginning of May you can take part in the off-trail and relay race around Heimaey, The Puffin Run, a 20 km run that is held in May every year. The Sailor’s day (I. Sjómannadagurinn) is a public holiday in Iceland and always held on the first weekend of June. As Vestmannaeyjar
is an old fishing village this is a day that we hold very dear to our hearts. On the Saturday we compete in various types of sports on the harbour and in the evening we have also various types of gatherings and parties. In the beginning of June a beer festival is held in Vestmannaeyjar where various breweries come together and pair beer with fantastic street food.

Every year in June we have huge football tournaments for young boys and girls where children from the mainland come and compete with each other. Then you might even hear and see the now world known HUH viking clap. The end of the eruption celebration (I. Goslokahátíð) has become a fixed event on the island. It is held on the weekend following the 3rd of July as this is the day that the volcanic eruption on the island was officially declared at an end in 1973. This weekend is filled with events and exhibitions of all kinds. On the Saturday there are gatherings at the harbour with bands playing and many fishermen open up their
boat shelters for partying. This is truly a unique festival where a great number of former islanders as well as others come to have a great time with us. Vestmannaeyjar’s National Festival (I. Þjóðhátíð) is unquestionably the best known festival where we party with friends and family outdoors for about 3 days, always the first weekend of August. Then we feast in special tents and people come over and camp or stay in houses in the town. We have huge concerts where Icelandic bands play, and the

weekend is packed with entertainment of all sorts such as traditional bonfire, fireworks and a famous “hillside sing-along”. The Puffling Rescue time starts in late August and early September. The pufflings are then leaving their nest late at night for the first time. They often get disorientated and fly towards town instead of to the ocean and then they need help getting back to the wilderness. Children as well as adults go around the town and find the pufflings and keep them overnight before they take them for weighing, measuring and check up at the puffin sanctuary. If the puffling is healthy their rescuer can then take it to the seashore during daylight and set it free.
Icelanders celebrate christmas for 13 days or until the 6th of January. In Vestmannaeyjar The thirteenth (I. Þrettándinn) is a really festive day. We have torch-lit parade with fascinating creatures such as elfs, fairies, demons, trolls, santa clauses (our 13 Yule Lads) and of course their parents, the ogress Grýla and her husband Leppalúði joining the locals at a huge bonfire and colorful fireworks.
LAVA WALKS WITH LOCALS History walk over the lava and volcano Fun and lively walk over the new lava in Vestmannaeyjar where our local guide goes through the history of the eruption in 1973. We´ll tell you stories of the people you´ll get a glimpse of how local life was when people were rebuilding the town afterwards and how living on the island is today. The punchline at the end of the tour is to go to the top of the volcano. A great way to get to know the volcanic history of the island and get in touch with the nature. The view over the island is magnificent. Our walking tours start at our harbor office and can end in the town center or in Eldheimar Volcano Museum. The duration is about 2 hours. A fishing village Vestmannaeyjar is a true fishing village as the inhabitants have been fishing and gathering since settling the island. Vestmannaeyjar is home to one of the largest fishing communities in Iceland as it lies close to rich fishing grounds. The puffin patrol During the puffling rescue time, in late August to middle of September, we operate a puffin patrol in Vestmannaeyjar. The goal of the patrol is to determine the number of pufflings coming into town each year and their overall conditions and health. Important information are gained such as total count, conditions and the timing of when they fledge. This provides us with information that give us good indication on the puffin population and how it changes throughout the years. If you find a puffling during your stay at this time you should bring it to the puffin sanctuary,
where it is weighed and its wings measured and afterwards you can bring it to the ocean and release it to freedom. If you are taking part in rescuing pufflings you need: 1. A cardboard and flashlight (preferable one box per bird as they can hurt each other). 2. Search for them in the dark in corners where they are trying to hide as they are confused and don’t know where to go. 3. Be calm and try not to handle the bird very much as they can

How to get to Vestmannaeyjar? There are various ways to get to our beautiful island. You can take a ferry from the mainland. The ferry runs from Landeyjahöfn harbour on the south coast and the trip takes about 40 minutes. You can even take your car with you but we recommend you then to book your trip in advantage www.herjolfur.is. Note that you can walk around the island in less than a day so you don’t need a car. You can also fly from the south coast in a small plane with www.flightseeing.is where the flight only takes about 7 minutes or so. Or you can fly directly from Reykjavik city airport with Eagle air but they have regular flights to the island that only take 20 minutes. You can book your flight on www.eagleair.is There are scheduled bus tours from Reykjavik to Landeyjahöfn, the harbour that the ferry runs from. You can find the schedule on www.straeto.is

The volcanic eruption On the 23rd of January 1973 a volcanic eruption formed in Vestmannaeyjar without any warning. All the inhabitants had to evacuate the island rapidly. The eruption lasted until the 3rd of July or for about a half a year and the damage was overwhelming. A lot of houses were buried under lava and ash but immediately clean-up and reconstruction started so that the islanders could start moving back home. Many who lost their homes in the eruption decided though not to return back. The volcanic eruption had a huge impact on the island and its inhabitants and when you arrive here you can hike up to the volcano and by the new lava and even spot houses that are still underneath it.

Welcome to the Westman Islands Beautiful nature, birdlife and Iceland’s volcanic history are showcased during a drive around Heimaey, largest of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman) Islands. Surrounded by tall cliffs filled with nesting puffins, fulmars, and guillemot in season. We start our tour from the ferry side, drive along the west coast, viewing offshore islands on the way to Herjólfur Valley, visiting a replica of a 1000 years Viking-era farmhouse. We continue our drive towards the southern tip of the island, visiting the puffin area. After a stop at Puffin Lookout, we continue our tour towards the volcano Eldfell created in 1973 ending the tour at museum Eldheimar or the Beluga Whale Sanctuary, Sea Life after a drive through the 1973 lava, viewing majestic glaciers and Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, known for its eruption in 2010 which wreaked havoc on air traffic to Europe for six days.

This Alfred. Alfred is one of our guides. Alfred grew up in Heimaey and knows the island and its history by heart. Alfred was 14 years old when the eruption in 1973 took place. He was one of the 5300 inhabitants who had to escape from the Westman Islands on the night of the eruption. Hear his amazing story first hand.
