Barbara Titus Barbara Titus began her career with pets in Michigan working at a small animal hospital and later opened her own grooming salon. Upon moving to Arizona, she continued her pet career and spent nearly twenty years working in a larger animal hospital as both veterinary technician and pet stylist along with volunteering for a pet rescue.

Since retirement she has continued to volunteer and donate time to a local animal shelter / pet rescue in hopes to someday put an end to euthanasia and give deserving pets a second chance in a forever home.

The US Review of Books Why Not Eddie?

by Barbara Titus Lettra Press book review by Yousra Medhkour “While the pets were alone in their kennels and pens, their hopes for a Christmas had come to an end.”

In real life, Eddie was also considered “unadoptable” because people thought him aggressive, and he suffered seizures Nobody had the patience to give him a second chance In fact, he was almost euthanized before being taken to the adoption center.

Debra Green, the illustrator of this book, was a volunteer and took care of him there, but Titus, the author of this story, stepped in and took the dog home when the adoption center had to shut down.

Knowing that this act of kindness is behind the content of this children’s book makes it all the more rewarding a read. The soft illustrations are fabulously well-rendered, promising a hopeful atmosphere that’s acted upon throughout the story.

Furthermore, not only are the pictures inviting for children, but the singsong rhyming scheme makes it even more engaging. Children are bound to want to hear or read along with their parents Eddie’s Christmas adventure over and over.

What motivated you to write your book/s?

- I’ve been creating my own Christmas cards for several years. I get many compliments; pet lovers can relate to my cards. Some are funny, some are sentimental.

Who is your greatest influence in writing?

- My greatest influence was a friend that suggested I put my Christmas Cards into a book format.

How did writing change your life?

- It hasn’t changed my life so much, however readers seem to relate to my stories and appreciate what I’m trying to get through to them.

What is your goals in writing your book/s?

- I have no goals, although if I were to become successful, I have several years of Christmas cards that I put into the tune of Christmas Carols so the recipient could sing to the tune (Silent Night, Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree etc.)

The story (song) was always about the pet (sometimes a mischievous pet or a precious pet in disguise !!) So many of my cards have been humorous, but always about a rescued pet that I saved, loved, and lived with.

Who is your target audience?

- I want to target adults and children who want a pet but don’t care about spending a small fortune to find a pet that will give the same kind of love, devotion, bonding and fun they are looking for. I want them to know that they don’t have to purchase a “designer dog” when they can get a rescue that will give them them the same love and devotion of a purebred without the genetic issues that purebreds come with.

To whom do you dedicate your book/s to?

- I dedicated my first book to the same friend who convinced me to write a book from a Christmas card I sent her years ago. A “sing along” to the tune of Silent Night, about an old dog alone in a shelter at Christmas time. So, I took her up on it, and put my card into a book format. It was a tearjerker with a happy ending! It has been published and printed, but I couldn’t afford to go forth with it.

Between where you started and where you’re at, can you say you’ve achieved your goal?

- Yes, I feel like I achieved my goal to the people who have read my stories and can sympathize with the numerous pets that deserve a second chance.

What is your message to your readers?

- My message is ADOPT! DON’T SHOP! A person can have the sweetest, most perfect pet they’ve ever had without spending huge amounts of money on purebreds.

What are your writing achievements?

- I have no “writing achievements” other than my annual Christmas Cards.

I have friends/relatives who have kept all of the Christmas cards I’ve ever written because they like how I write, look forward to the next one and will remember me long for my passion regarding rescued pets!
