Un particolare punto di vista

Con il libro Architecture, Tourism and Marginal Areas. Research and Design Proposals si dà avvio a una collana editoriale che mutua il proprio nome dalla rete internazionale di scuole di architettura Designing Heritage Tourism Landscapes. Fondata nel 2015, la rete riunisce sedici scuole1 impegnate nella condivisione di programmi didattici e di ricerca incentrati sullo studio del rapporto tra patrimonio, valorizzazione e fruizione turistica dei luoghi.

Con l’espressione heritage tourism2 si definisce quel particolare settore del turismo culturale interessato alle forme del patrimonio – siano esse materiali o immateriali, naturali o culturali, non ancora tutelate o sottoposte a regimi di protezione – accomunate dalla capacità di esprimere un legame con il passato al quale si attribuisce un senso di valore.

Al pari delle molte altre forme in cui si frammenta e diversifica il fenomeno turistico, anche lo heritage tourism è interpretabile in maniera duplice. Esso può rappresentare un potente volano di sviluppo nei processi di rigenerazione territoriale e al contempo un fattore che mette a rischio il senso stesso dei luoghi. Se tale forma di turismo si dimostra determinante nella riattivazione economica di territori che abbiano dismesso antiche funzioni, di città o parti di città in declino e di quelle aree marginali che costituiscono l’oggetto di questo libro, essa per converso può causare alterazioni negli usi dei manufatti architettonici e nella natura degli spazi pubblici, modificazioni fisiche non meno evidenti rispetto a quelle introdotte da altre attività produttive, trasformazioni di luoghi apparentemente iper-protetti in vuoti fondali teatrali. È proprio su questo carattere duplice del fenomeno turistico e sulle associazioni heritage/turismo, salvaguardia/ accessibilità, conservazione/fruizione, che la collana DHTL focalizza la propria attenzione, presentando ricerche teoriche e sperimentazioni progettuali. A particular point of view

An editorial series, which takes its name from the international network of schools of architecture Designing Heritage Tourism Landscapes, is being launched together with the book Architecture, Tourism and Marginal Areas. Research and Design Proposals. The network, founded in 2015, brings together sixteen schools1 which share educational and research programmes aimed at studying the relationship between heritage, enhancement and tourist use of places.

The expression heritage tourism2 defines that particular sector of cultural tourism interested in heritage forms – either tangible or intangible, natural or cultural, not yet safeguarded or subject to protection regimes – merged by the capacity of expressing a relationship with a valuable past.

Like many other forms fragmenting and diversifying the touristic phenomenon, also heritage tourism can be interpreted in a two ways: first, as a powerful driving force for development in territorial regeneration processes but secondly, at the same time, putting at risk the true sense of places. Such form of tourism aims to determine the economical reactivation of territories that have lost ancient functions, of cities or part of cities in decline and of those marginal areas which are the subject of this book, but conversely it can cause alterations to the uses of buildings and to the original nature of public spaces, physical modifications not less evident than those introduced by other productive activities, transformations of apparently hyper-protected places into empty theatrical backdrops. It is exactly on this two-sided character of touristic phenomenon and on the associations heritage/ tourism, safeguarding/accessibility, conservation/fruition, that the DHTL series focuses its attention, presenting theoretical researches and design experimenta-

denunciato solo da alcuni elementi in cui riemerge l’atto progettuale, reso in particolare esplicito dalla presenza di vasche d’acqua nel centro delle corti, dal disegno della piscina e dalla modifica dimensionale del complesso residenziale posto a est, che è ampliato e allineato con la nuova cantina.

Dichiara l’architetto: «The main question here is starting from a position that is theoretically very interesting but actually very dangerous in practice – but it’s the only way.

Il progetto diviene così espediente per riflettere sul tema del patrimonio, sulla sua fruizione, valorizzazione e conservazione. Il tema è centrale in un’area a vocazione rurale come l’Alqueva, dove la progressiva trasformazione della produzione agricola ha portato all’abbandono di numerose proprietà terriere. Molti sono i manufatti in disuso che, nonostante l’abbandono, configurano nel loro insieme un patrimonio diffuso, espressione di una matrice territoriale che veicola memorie e identità. Nel continuum della stratificazione storica in cui la formazione del lago introduce una discontinuità, che è criticità e contestualmente risorsa, l’introduzione di nuove forme di utilizzo dei luoghi è un possibile strumento per conferire forza vitale a un patrimonio che, se lasciato cadere in rovina, diverrebbe materiale silente. The project becomes an opportunity to reflect about heritage, its use, enhancement and conservation. The topic is particularly relevant in a rural area such as Alqueva, where a progressive transformation of agricultural production has led to farmland abandonment by many farm owners. There are many neglected buildings which, despite their state of abandonment, create a widespread heritage, the demonstration of a territorial matrix that conveys memories and identities. In the continuum of the historical stratification in which the formation of the lake introduces a discontinuity, which is critical and at the same time a resource, the introduction of new ways of using places is a possible tool to give vital force to a heritage that, if neglected, becomes silent material. So the transformation of the monte of São Lourenço do Barrocal is a form of protection aimed to prevent ancient architectures from becoming well renovated buildings, but no longer capable of expressing values, relationships and meanings. The relationship between memories and invention is resolved, in this case, in the choice of continuing with the life of architecture, through reuse, to ensure its survival. The introduction of new functions has this purpose, as only the life inside architecture “transforms it into something natural” and “provides a heritage status”.

Turismo un “genere comune” A farci comprendere quale rilevanza oggi abbia assunto il turismo, come fenomeno capace di incidere sulle trasformazioni economiche, territoriali e culturali in atto, non basta più la distinzione, tutta e solo culturale, tra viaggiatore e turista1 quanto, invece, il dover riconoscere che proprio il turismo è divenuto, come afferma il geografo francese Michel Lussault, “vettore di costruzione del mondo” esito della urbanizzazione planetaria e della mondializzazione, ma anche loro principio costitutivo. Tale riconoscimento non può non portarci a doverlo considerare e assumere, non più e solo come causa delle problematiche poste dal turismo di massa, ma come fenomeno da rendere strumento attivo nella costruzione e nell’affermazione della urbanità contemporanea intesa come l’insieme dei caratteri materiali e immateriali che contribuiscono a rendere specifico e singolare un luogo e i modi in cui esso e percepito e vissuto, da chi lo abita, lo frequenta, o lo attraversa.

Se, come afferma Lussault, il turismo è oggi un “genere comune”2, è necessario riflettere anche sul senso che esso può assumere nella dimensione quotidiana e ordinaria del vivere e dell’abitare nella quale ormai i ruoli di abitante e di turista non sono più, come in passato, nettamente distinti o contrapposti: sempre più frequentemente, infatti, il turista vuole esperire i luoghi con “l’autenticità” dell’abitante e l’abitante riscoprire, come fosse un turista, le singolarità dei luoghi prossimi a quelli del proprio quotidiano.

Se quindi è vero che l’idea di turismo è strettamente connessa al concetto di spostamento in luoghi diversi da quelli del proprio quotidiano3, e altresì vero che questo

Tourism as a “common genre” To help us understand what relevance tourism has taken on today, as a phenomenon capable of affecting current economic, territorial and cultural transformations, the mere cultural distinctions between traveller and tourist1 will no longer suffice. We must instead recognize how Tourism has become a “vector of world construction”, as stated by the French Geographer Michel Lussault, who describes it as the result of planetary urbanisation and globalisation, also acting as their constituting principle. This recognition leads us to better understanding tourism, no longer solely as the cause of problems posed by mass-tourism, but as a phenomenon that can be made into an active tool in the construction and affirmation of contemporary urbanity, intended as the set of material and immaterial features that contribute to making a place specific and singular, and the ways in which that place is perceived and experienced, by those who live it, frequent it, or travel through it.

If, as Lussault states, Tourism is a “common genre”2, it is also necessary to reflect on the meanings it takes on in the daily and ordinary dimension of living and inhabiting, wherein the roles of inhabitant and tourist no longer exist as they once used to, as clearly distinct or opposites: more and more frequently in fact, tourists now aim to experience places with the “authenticity” of local inhabitants, while “locals” look to rediscover the singularities of places in proximity to their daily lives as if they were tourists.

So if it is true that the idea of tourism is so closely connected to the concept of travel or movement throughout places that are different from our everyday lives3, it is

Voyage metropolitano lungo la Senna La Senna, lunga circa ottocento kilometri, attraversa diversi comuni dei 130 facenti della Metropole Grand Paris5. Il paesaggio fluviale della Senna chiaramente riconosciuto – come tanta iconografia ci racconta dalle gravures settecentesche, ai dipinti di Corot, degli impressionisti di Sisley, di E. Hopper, etc – sino agli inizi del XIX secolo come meta del loisir e della contemplazione romantica del paesaggio naturale, è stato successivamente, dagli inizi del XX secolo in poi, fortemente segnato dalla industrializzazione massiva che ha compromesso prima di tutto la continuità della riva nel suo sviluppo longitudinale e, in senso trasversale, le connessioni tra i diversi nuclei urbani e il fiume.

Seguendo lo scorrere del fiume, dal centro di Parigi verso l’esterno ed oltre il périphérique, si attraversano numerosi e differenti paesaggi, urbanizzati e non, industrializzati o meno, abitati o abbandonati; si intercettano diverse aree di margine che sono di fatto, anche se apparentemente prossime ai centri urbani, completamente estranee alle dinamiche di scambi e interferenze territoriali. Aree che risultano tagliate fuori dai principali percorsi o mete turistiche note (come i luoghi degli impressionisti quali Giverny o Vexin) che si susseguono lungo il fiume; aree che vivono il paradosso di una condizione periferica, nonostante la prossimità a Parigi, senza che la condizione marginale e di appartenenza al paesaggio fluviale della Senna riesca a configurarsi come una risorsa.

cultural relationships among the many different areas and places of Grand Paris.

There are several questions that have accompanied the reflections of the teams involved on the subject: How can tourism be interpreted to effectively contribute to the complex process of a “cultural” construction of the Grand Paris metropolis?

What forms of community participation? What possible regulatory and administrative tools should be put in place to build new forms of a synergistic and strategic tourism among the different municipalities of the Grand Paris? And what forms of cooperation might be possible?

The image and understanding of tourism usually makes a sharp distinction between historic city centres and the urban peripheries of European metropolises: an artistic historical value is given to city centres, while a more regional landscape focused view is attributed to greater metropolitan areas. To overcome this reductive dichotomy, the different teams of the AIGP, through various proposals and scenarios, have all somehow reflected upon a necessary conceptual enlargement to encompass the immaterial aspects of the very notion of heritage.

The need arose to reflect on the specificity of a patrimonial value of extra-urban sites of tourism, and particularly the more marginal ones of metropolitan areas, to be recognized (and identified) precisely through a set of different experimental, innovative and integrated practices, which tourism itself can help activate in such places, compared to the usual and recurring ones of city centres.

A new field of important experimentation from this viewpoint was activated by the AIGP in the intricate and varied fluvial river landscape of the Grand Paris project.

new crossings; and even the work of the Portzmparc team, which – in occasion of the last AIGP mission, La mise en tourisme des territoires du Grand Paris: enjeux et perspectives – focused on the possibilities offered by the river landscape to enhance and promote new forms of more local and authentic tourism, linked to the seasonal temporality of water cycles and the slow transformation of lake landscapes7. Beyond the different approaches and places of experimentation, many of the proposals, are based on interpretations of the Seine River’s potential with the prospect of building new relations among Paris’ intramuros city centre, the territories of the Metropole Grand Paris, and even beyond, into the region parisienne, from the landscapes of the Ile de France up to Normandy.

In addition to the AIGP proposals, other initiatives of a different nature also contributed to the investigation of the potential value of the Seine in the construction of a metropolitan identity for the Grand Paris, and fuelled the debate on the possible prospects of the river landscape. In 2016, the Reinventer la Seine competition was announced. Approximately fifty project sites were identified along the full length of the river from Paris to Le Havre, twenty of which are located in the area of Grand Paris. Participation in the competition required the establishment of mixed groups – made up of architects, planners, property developers who were willing to partially finance the project, and other figures such as artists, landscape designers, and local associations active throughout the area, start-ups, developers, etc. – who were all asked to propose innovative projects that would be capable of prefiguring new uses, new ways of inhabiting, working, and living at the water’s edge in a new relationship with the river. L’innovation et le fleuve – as read in the

Molte delle proposte, al di là dei diversi approcci e luoghi di sperimentazione, fondano sulla interpretazione del potenziale della Senna nella prospettiva della costruzione di nuove relazioni tra la Parigi intramuros e i territori della Metropole du Grand Paris, e poi oltre la region parisienne, attraverso i paesaggi dell’Ile de France, sino alla Normandia.

Oltre le proposte dell’AIGP altre iniziative di diversa natura hanno contribuito ad alimentare il dibattito sulle prospettive del paesaggio fluviale.

Nel 2016 è stato bandito il concorso Reinventer la Seine; sono stati individuati all’incirca cinquanta siti di progetto lungo lo sviluppo del fiume da Parigi sino a Le Havre, di cui una ventina localizzati nel Grand Paris. La partecipazione al concorso presupponeva la costituzione di gruppi misti – composti da architetti, urbanisti, promotori disposti a finanziare in parte il progetto, e da altre figure quali artisti, paesaggisti, associazioni attive sui territori, start-up, sviluppatori, etc. – ai quali si richiedeva di proporre progetti innovativi, capaci di prefigurare nuovi usi, nuovi modi di vivere, di lavorare, di abitare al bordo dell’acqua in un nuovo rapporto con il fiume. L’innovation et le fleuve – si legge nel testo del bando – deviennent ainsi les deux fils rouges pour inventer la métropole du XXIeme siècle de Paris au Havre, en passant per Rouen. Molte sono state le proposte interessanti8, che hanno prospettato l’attivazione di programmi misti, che potessero dunque con temporalità diverse intercettare i residenti locali, i viaggiatori, e i turisti della regione metropolitana, in una prospettiva di più ampia innovazione integrata. Al di là dunque delle soluzioni formali dei diversi progetti, una parte fondamentale

Aree interne, turismo e nuove topografie

indubbiamente alla consapevolezza di riequilibrare, ripensare modi di vita e sistemi insediativi. Una sorta di “quiete dopo la tempesta” che porta nuova domanda di turismo sostenibile, nuove necessità di cittadini-consumatori passivi a rivendicare relazioni con il passato identitario, sicuramente aggiornato alla contemporaneità.

Come sosteneva J. Brinckerhoff Jackson, in una visione antropologica, «Ci deve essere nel nostro nuovo concetto di Storia un intervallo di morte o di rigetto prima che ci possa essere rinnovo e riforma. Il vecchio ordine deve morire prima che il paesaggio possa rinascere. Molti di noi conoscono la gioia e l’eccitazione non tanto di creare il nuovo, quanto di resuscitare ciò che è stato trascurato, e questa eccitazione è particolarmente forte quando la condizione originale è vista come sacra o bella. Il vecchio cascinale deve decadere prima che lo possiamo restaurare e che possa vivere una sua vita differente nella campagna; il paesaggio deve essere trascurato e lacerato prima che possiamo restaurare il suo ecosistema naturale; il quartiere deve degradarsi prima che possiamo riscoprirlo e riportarlo alla luce. Così avviene il processo secondo cui riproduciamo lo schema cosmico e correggiamo la Storia»3.

La crisi industriale, i cambiamenti produttivi, una condizione urbana che, nella sterminata dimensione ed espansione della periferia senza centro, ha perso quell’immaginario necessario a costruire il senso di appartenenza e di relazione umana, riportano alla riscoperta dei luoghi, al cambio di sguardo verso l’interno, forse a quello che Cesare Pavese affermava in La luna e i falò «Un paese ci vuole, non fosse che per il gusto di andarsene via. Un paese vuol dire non essere soli, sapere che nella gente, nelle piante, nella terra c’è qualcosa di tuo, che anche quando non ci sei resta ad aspettarti».

Inland areas, tourism and new topographies

We are witnesses of the joy and the excitement not so much of creating something new as of resurrecting what has been neglected, and this excitement is particularly strong when the original condition is seen as sacred or beautiful. The old farmhouse should be in decay before to be restored in order to live a different life in the countryside; the landscape should be neglected and lacerated before to restore its natural ecosystem; the neighborhood should be degraded before rediscovering it and bringing it back to light. Thus the second process takes place that reproduce the cosmic scheme and revise the History»3.

The industrial crisis, the productive changes, an urban condition that, in the boundless dimension and expansion of the periphery without a center, has lost the imaginary necessary of building the sense of belonging and of human relationship, they influence to the rediscovery of places, to the change of glance towards the interior, perhaps to what Cesare Pavese said in La luna e i falò «A country is needed, if nothing else for the sake of leaving. A country means not being alone, knowing that in people, in plants, in the earth there is something of yours, that even when you are not there, it is waiting for you».

This is more evident in the era in which the crisis of the factory and of the systems structuring modernity, bring humanity back to the need of rebuilding new living conditions.

Important economic implications that concern most of the world cultural tourism demand bring in light that the problem is not only nostalgic, conservative, exotic, romantic, but mainly productive.

In this direction, it is right to pose the question whether the areas so-called

picturesque iconography of the great travelers of the Grand Tour in these territories.

The idea of a ruin is therefore accepted in its unitary relationship with the architecture as a new reality and ability to talk about the identity of places in symbiosis with nature itself.

In other words, this design intent is to insert a sign of the contemporary in a territory with strong original connotations, in the configurative structure as in the functional one, re-proposing the Lecorbuserian dilemma in Eveux, en choisissant la place, je commettais l’acte criminel ou valable.

The relationship with memory and with a place is inherent in the hybridization process of the cenobitic typology that metaphorizes and reinterprets, thus reimagining the spirit of the place itself in an analogical reference and the interior of a territory still tied to silence and a sense of contemplative living.

In this sense we can affirm the resumption of an interrupted process, in which history and the project are reconciled via the synthesis of a dimension of contemporary life.

Therefore, a new sign capable of challenging the system of constraints and inhibitory norms acts as a new polarity in the historical system and at the same time represents a key in reading and discovering a territory innervated by the superimposition of infrastructural grids and successive agricultural configurations in history. The soil therefore constitutes the Muratorian operating element, interacting with the ground attack of the architectural object that accentuates and emphasizes the signs of the territory.

Il Monastero si colloca come una presenza tra le altre presenze, sparso nel paesaggio e nei bergamotteti, avamposto intento a guardare la natura e i segni del sistema insediativo originario.

Vi è un atteggiamento cioè, di rinuncia dell’intervento dentro i centri storici, evitando un inutile accanimento terapeutico per proporre un’idea d’innovazione in forte dialettica con l’esistente, attraverso il fascino della rovina immersa nella natura che caratterizza l’iconografia storica e pittoresca dei grandi viaggiatori del Grand Tour anche in queste territori.

L’idea di rovina quindi viene accettata nel suo rapporto unitario con l’architettura come nuova realtà e capacità di parlare d’identità dei luoghi in simbiosi con la natura stessa.

L’atteggiamento progettuale cioè è quello di inserire in un territorio dai connotati fortemente originari un segno della contemporaneità, nella struttura configurativa come in quella funzionale, riproponendo il dilemma lecorbuseriano a Eveux, en choisissant la place, je commettais l’acte criminel ou valable.

Il rapporto con la memoria e con il luogo è insito nel processo d’ibridazione della tipologia cenobitica che metaforizza e reinterpreta, quindi reimmagina in un rimando analogico lo spirito del luogo stesso e di un’internità del territorio ancora legata al silenzio e ad un senso dell’abitare contemplativo.

In questo senso si può affermare di riprendere un processo interrotto in cui la storia e il progetto si riconciliano nella sintesi di una dimensione di vita contemporanea.

Dunque un nuovo segno capace di sfidare il sistema di vincoli e di norme inibitorie per porsi come nuova polarità nel sistema storico e nello stesso tempo chiave di lettura e

Il Val di Noto in Sicilia: il caso Palazzolo Acreide

Natura e artificio Un palinsesto di dense stratificazioni dove paesaggi naturali di rara bellezza fanno da contrappunto a piccole e medie città di notevole qualità urbana. È questa condizione a fare del Val di Noto, nel sud-est della Sicilia, il territorio con la più alta concentrazione di siti inseriti nella World Heritage List dell’Unesco. E a questo unicum appartiene il territorio di Palazzolo Acreide, dove la complessa relazione tra struttura urbana e sistema naturale si traduce in una conformazione sedimentata secondo modalità, riti, figure e segni di origine antichissima. Un altipiano solcato da profonde forre, con porose pareti e cavità sotterranee, caratterizzato da straordinarie architetture del suolo e da chiese barocche che conferiscono al paesaggio singolari profili urbani. [1] Ogni atto antropico di questa terra sembra ricercare fondamento nella relazione con l’orografia: dal cavare, dal sottrarre materia alla terra, prende forma il lavoro dell’uomo.

Così, configurando spazi cavi come latomie, ipogei e necropoli rupestri, il rito della sepoltura genera arcaici sistemi insediativi. Il processo destinato a dar forma alla città trae origine dal sedime calcarenitico, la disposizione sul suolo dei blocchi lapidei stereotomici, atto complementare allo scavo, innesca la trasformazione dell’orografia in artificio.

Sin dal settecento questo palinsesto culturale affascina i viaggiatori del Grand Tour e stimola gli artisti a indagare il singolare equilibrio tra natura e architettura, tra storia ed esperienze del vissuto quotidiano, gli elementi, in buona sostanza, che di questo paesaggio siciliano costituiscono i tratti peculiari. Immagini e suggestioni destinate a stratificarsi nell’immaginario collettivo fino a diventare una parte importante dell’identità culturale del territorio.

Nature and artifice A palipmsest of dense layers where natural landscapes of rare beauty act as a counterpoint to small and medium-sized cities of remarkable urban quality. It is this condition that makes the Val di Noto, in the south-east of Sicily, the territory with the highest concentration of sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. And to this unicum belongs the territory of Palazzolo Acreide, where the complex relationship between urban structure and natural system results in a sedimentation conformation according to modalities, rites, figures and signs of ancient origin. A plateau crossed by deep ravines, with porous walls and underground cavities, characterized by the extraordinary architecture of the soil and by baroque churches that give the landscape singular urban outlines. [1] Each anthropic act of this soil seems to seek foundation in the relationship with the orography: from quarrying, removing matter from the earth, the work of man takes shape. Thus, by configuring hollow spaces like quarries known as latomie, hypogeums and rocky necropolis, the burial rite generates archaic settlement systems. The process destined to give shape to the city originates from the calcarenitic sediments, the arrangement on the ground of the stereotomic stone blocks, complementary to the excavation, triggers the transformation of the orography into artifice.

Since the eighteenth century, this cultural palimpsest has fascinated the Grand Tour travelers and has stimulated artists in investigating the unique balance between nature and architecture, history and experiences of everyday life, i.e. those elements that, in essence, make up this peculiar Sicilian landscape. Evoluzione della struttura urbana di Palazzolo Acreide Nonostante siano emerse testimonianze di sistemi insediativi più antichi, il primo nucleo di fondazione di Palazzolo coincide con quello della città greca di Akrai. Con l’abbandono di quest’ultima, dopo la conquista araba, la città si sposta nella parte sommitale del quartiere Barreri, l’attuale S. Paolo. La costruzione del castello medievale è il primo atto di nuova fondazione e diviene, insieme al più tardo insediamento sulla prospiciente collina dell’Orologio, il nucleo generatore della forma urbana che caratterizza ancora oggi la città.

Di questo lento processo di crescita, che determinerà la struttura per parti dell’attuale centro storico, le fabbriche religiose rappresentano, a partire dal XIII secolo, gli elementi primari delle dinamiche di espansione.

Dopo il terremoto del 1693, la ricostruzione di chiese e conventi, delle case palazzate ottocentesche e, successivamente, degli edifici civili, quali il nuovo teatro e il municipio, riflette la vitalità di una società in forte trasformazione.

In questo lungo processo di evoluzione della struttura della città, la posizione delle fabbriche e le modifiche dei tracciati e delle quote urbane propongono un’interessante chiave di lettura dei mutamenti sociali ed economici della comunità.

I complessi religiosi si fondano sui banchi calcarenitici più alti e sono connessi al sistema urbano attraverso il dispositivo scenografico delle scalinate. Mentre i palazzi nobiliari si dispongono sugli spazi pubblici e sugli assi viari più importanti, conferendogli carattere e decoro.

planimetric map drawn up by the engineer Calendoli in 1875 [3] which documents the phases of its urban development and anticipates the directions of its future expansion. The route of the Via Roma, which in the map appears only as a prediction, will constitute the first margin of the city towards the east, just as the axis of the via Vincenzo Messina will mark one of the directions of development from the 70s of the last century onwards.

The same planimetric map shows the trident that starts from Piazza Pretura, thus shaping the access road to the city, and the first blocks of the most recent Convento district, the only part of the city with an orthogonal layout, where the direct relationship between the building typology of the terrane houses and the urban morphology of the block is clear.

The structure of the historical city, on the other hand, does not lend itself easily to a classificatory analysis, since the complex orography determines a settlement form with many typomorphological variables.

From the last quarter of the nineteenth century the city shows its development towards east, marked by some clear choices: the extra moenia construction of the new Capuchin convent, which becomes a pole and head element of the Convento district, bordered to the south-west by the coeval municipal villa; the construction of the new cemetery, dating a few decades later, which consolidates the access route to the city from Syracuse.

The strategic importance of this area will determine the choice to build, in the 60s of the last century, a path parallel to the Via Nazionale – Viale Dante – the first modern street with a large road section, onto which the first houses line the
