Arquitecto franco-peruano, recibió el “grand prix national d’architecture” y el hexágono de oro. Como docente ha formado cientos de arquitectos en Francia y hoy enseña en la UPC de Lima.

ste proyecto es el resultado de un trabajo serio sostenido por dos arquitectos talentosos. Es un proyecto maduro, culto, que honra la idea de educación y cuyo uso, no lo dudo, será motivo de orgullo estudiantil, así como del medio arquitectónico.

Pienso que cuatro obras han sido importantes para condicionar la realización del Aulario. Las dos primeras corresponden a la visita de Sandra y Jean Pierre a las obras de dos grandes maestros: Le Corbusier en Chandigarh y Louis Kahn en Dacca. En ellas la presencia física, la escala pública y la respuesta al clima son tratadas con una materialidad telúrica que la sensibilidad de Barclay y Crousse retienen como favorable al programa y al clima del norte peruano. En tercer lugar está el edificio de la UTEC, en el que las arquitectas irlandesas Shelley McNamara e Yvonne Farrell construyeron, para un programa universitario en Lima, un fuerte símbolo que acabó con el ‘miedo de hacer arquitectura’ en la escena peruana.

Finalmente está el Lugar de la Memoria, proyecto cuyo reconocimiento internacional los ha liberado y les ha otorgado esa seguridad que se necesita para mantener un camino propio.

his project is the result of serious work by two talented architects. This mature, sophisticated project honours the idea of education and will surely become a source of pride for the students and for the architecture scene.

Four architectural works played, I believe, an important part in the conception of the Lecture Building. The first two were the works of two great masters which Sandra and Jean Pierre visited: Le Corbusier at Chandigarh and Louis Kahn at Dacca. In both, the physical presence, the public scale and the response to the climate are treated with a telluric materiality which Barclay and Crousse’s sensitivity retained, and later considered favourable to the program and to the climate in the Peruvian North. The third is the UTEC building, in which Irish architects Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell built, for a university program in Lima, a potent symbol that effectively ended the ‘fear of making architecture’ in Peru. The final one is the Place of Remembrance (Lugar de la Memoria). The international recognition they obtained with this project liberated them, giving them the self-assurance that is essential to forge a path of one’s own.

El proyecto responde a un programa importante, el de un centro de aulas para diversas facultades. Los 9400 m2 de área techada se proyectan en un volumen cuadrado virtual de 70 metros de lado y nueve de alto que permite apilar tres niveles de espacios de uso individual o dos de uso colectivo. Se instala un volumen unitario de expresión urbana que resulta de un exterior quieto, una belleza tranquila que protege y que contrasta con un interior dinámico, amplio, a la sombra, donde las circulaciones, holgadas y fluidas, gozan de ventilación natural y perspectivas diversas, abiertas a ‘calles’ verdes interiores o a dilataciones espaciales en las zonas centrales.

Las circulaciones crean una atmósfera generosa que consiste en desprender lateralmente las losas del segundo nivel para hacerlas aparecer luego como puentes en volado sobre la planta baja. Estos dos niveles se encuentran bajo un manto protector, un techo cuyas vigas invertidas lo transforman en una horizontal que flota, de la cual parten haces de luz natural que son evocados por la luz artificial lineal.

It is an important project: a lecture building for different programs in the university. The 9400 m2 of covered area are projected in a virtual square volume 70 metres long and 9 metres high, allowing three levels of spaces for individual use, or two for collective use, to be stacked. An individual volume of urban expression is the result of a quiet exterior, a calm, protecting beauty in contrast with dynamic, ample shaded areas, where an ample, fluid circulation benefits from natural ventilation and different perspectives, and opens to green interior ‘streets’ or spatial dilations in central areas.

The transit flow creates a generous atmosphere, where the slabs of the second level detach laterally, to reappear as bridges projecting above the ground floor. These two levels are sheltered by a roof with inverted beams transforming it into a floating horizontal, from which shafts of natural light radiate and are evoked by the linear artificial light.

The square points to the four cardinal directions. To the East is the main access, with the tenderness of its ramp and its lattice to the right, and a mighty, wide vertical space assuming the necessary role of portico. The honorary entrance and the ambulatory access synthesise with force and character the

uando Yvonne Farrell y Shelley McNamara, curadoras de la 16 Mostra Internazionale di Architettura, La Biennale di Venezia, nos invitaron a presentar el proyecto de Piura en el Arsenal, nuestra pregunta central fue cómo responder a su manifiesto FREESPACE. Su pronunciamiento enaltece “la capacidad de la arquitectura para encontrar generosidad adicional e inesperada en cada proyecto”, incentivando “nuevas maneras de ver el mundo, de inventar soluciones en donde la arquitectura proporciona el bienestar y la dignidad de cada ciudadano de este frágil planeta.”

Nuestro proyecto celebra los obsequios que nos da libremente la naturaleza, usando el espacio como el elemento crucial y más duradero para mejorar la calidad de vida; nuestra propuesta responde al reto de mostrar estas cualidades intangibles en una exhibición.

Los dibujos, maquetas o fotografías tienen dificultad para transmitirnos la experiencia de la gente usando el edificio, para revelarnos cómo la luz modifica el espacio o para explicarnos cómo una dulce brisa que pasa a través de sus espacios nos trae recuerdos de infancia ...

La muestra intenta expresar la experiencia única de la arquitectura y su

hen Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, curators of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, invited us to present the Piura project at the Arsenale, our main question was how to respond to their manifesto FREESPACE. Their pronouncement praises “architecture’s capacity to find additional and unexpected generosity in each project”, encouraging “new ways of seeing the world, of inventing solutions where architecture provides for the well being and dignity of each citizen of this fragile planet.”

Our project celebrates nature’s free gifts using space as the most enduring and crucial element for improving quality of life and our proposal responds to the challenge of showing these intangible qualities in an exhibition.

Drawings, models or photographs struggle to deliver the experience of people using the building, to reveal how light modifies space or to explain how a calm breeze that go through the building can recall childhood memories ...

The exhibit attempts to convey the unique experience of architecture, and its capacity to make us wonder at these simple things.

As the building itself is inevitably absent from this exhibit, we show what is absent now from the actual building but was

Así como el edificio mismo esta inevitablemente ausente de la exhibición, decidimos mostrar lo que está ausente del edificio, pero que fue esencial para hacerlo realidad: los componentes artesanales para construir dos de los elementos claves del edificio.

Presentamos los encofrados de los paneles de celosía y de las bancas, cual testigos de los elementos reales que se encuentran a diez mil Kilómetros de distancia. Ellos representan la presencia del edificio ausente.

Invitamos a los visitantes a gozar de la luz veneciana filtrada por los paneles, mientras disfrutan de una buena conversación, sentados en la banca.

The formworks of the concrete lattice panels and the formwork of the bench are presented as witnesses of the real elements that are at ten thousand Kilometers away.

They represent the presence of the building’s absence.

We invite visitors to enjoy the filtered Venetian light while enjoying a good chat, sitting on the bench.

De las muchas experiencias significativas en la escala residencial, han podido madurar algunos términos constantes que connota su trabajo. Estas permanencias del proyecto, aun pasando de la escala de casas de playa y casas urbanas a la escala de edificios públicos o de proyectos urbanos, han encontrado siempre una coherencia. ¿Podrían comentarnos acerca de estos valores permanentes de la arquitectura en sus proyectos? ¿Qué tienen en común las casas de La Escondida y el Lugar de la Memoria, o el complejo del campus de la Universidad de Piura?

Nuestros proyectos han pasado por una lenta maduración, empezando por estructuras pequeñas para llegar, más tarde, a proyectos de mayor envergadura. Lo que une las casas de playa con el edificio académico de la Universidad de Piura es la búsqueda de la manera en que las lógicas del paisaje, del programa, del uso y del clima, pueden contribuir a las estrategias proyectuales y darle sentido a la arquitectura. João Vilanova Artigas decía que diseñaba casas como ciudades y ciudades como casas. La aproximación al problema puede ser el mismo; el resto es cuestión de encontrar la escala adecuada para cada proyecto y trabajar la coherencia entre las partes y el todo.

Among the many significant experiences on a residential scale, there have been recurring concepts in your work which have come into their own. These constants, which are present on the scale of beach houses as well as on the scale of public buildings or urban projects, have always been coherent. Would you comment on these permanent architectural values in your projects? What do the beach houses at La Escondida and the Place of Remembrance, or the complex at the Universidad de Piura campus, have in common?

Our projects have matured slowly; first came small structures and, later, larger projects.

What connects the beach houses and the academic building at Universidad de Piura is an exploration of how the logics of context – in this case, of landscape, program, use and climate – can contribute to the project’s strategies and confer meaning to architecture.

João Vilanova Artigas said he designed houses as if they were cities, and cities as if they were houses. The approach to the problem can be the same; the rest is a matter of finding the right scale for each project and working on the coherence between the parts and the whole.

2. ¿Cómo se traduce en el proyecto su voluntad de interpretar la relación con el contexto?

Tomamos el contexto en un sentido muy amplio; en este sentido, nos gusta que los proyectos estén pensados en base a ‘lo que hay’, lo que no quiere decir que nos impongamos materiales tradicionales o tipos históricos, ni que hagamos una exaltación de la escasez de recursos que define nuestro medio. ‘Lo que hay’ es, en nuestro país, una mano de obra poco tecnificada pero muy comprometida con el ‘hacer bien’ y una gama de materiales que están presentes en el lugar, o que se consiguen fácilmente, o que pueden ser montados por esa mano de obra de la cual disponemos. Sucede lo mismo con los sistemas constructivos. ‘Lo que hay’ es también un clima excepcional, que permite adoptar sin mucho esfuerzo soluciones que son muy costosas o difíciles de vivir en otras latitudes. En la costa peruana no hay nada más fácil que lograr una equivalencia entre el plano vertical y el plano horizontal, que fue uno de los fantasmas más recurrentes de la modernidad. El plano horizontal no tiene que equiparse con aislantes, impermeabilizantes, pendientes de escorrentía, plenums para el acondicionamiento del aire. El plano vertical tampoco necesita de múltiples capas constructivas: con la estructura prácticamente se acaba el edificio. Esto hace que sea realmente factible y económico lograr una

2. How does the project communicate this intention of interpreting a relationship with context?

We take ‘context’ in its wider meaning; in this sense, we like to conceive projects based on ‘what is available’, which doesn’t mean we impose on ourselves traditional materials or historical types, or that we exalt the scarcity of resources that defines our milieu. ‘What is available’ is, in our country, a workforce that may not be technically trained, but is deeply committed to doing things well, as well as a range of materials that can either be found on-site, are easily available or can be assembled by that workforce. The same applies to construction systems. ‘What is available’ is also an exceptional climate, that allows us to resort without much effort to solutions that in other latitudes are very expensive or difficult to implement. In the Peruvian coast nothing is easier to achieve than an equivalence between the vertical and the horizontal, one of the recurring spectres of modernity. Here, the horizontal plane doesn’t need to be equipped with insulation, flashing, drainage gradients, plenums for air conditioning. The vertical plane doesn’t require multiple construction layers: once the structure is finished, the building is practically done. This makes it really feasible and inexpensive to obtain an equivalence between inner and outer space.

Our architecture seeks to make use of these characteristics in a coherent and relevant way.
