Q

uesto libro raccoglie i lavori realizzati nel corso di venti anni per il Gruppo Techint, in particolare per Tenaris e Ternium, le due aziende “siderurgiche” che producono rispettivamente tubi d’acciaio e prodotti laminati piani e lunghi.

Si è trattato di una straordinaria esperienza professionale e umana, perché ha seguito il passaggio delle imprese da attori locali (Argentina) ad attori globali con centri di produzione sparsi in tutto il mondo (Stati Uniti, Messico, Canada, Brasile, Colombia, Italia, Cina, Giappone, Indonesia, Arabia Saudita).

Abbiamo cercato, come architetti, di dare a questa realtà in straordinaria crescita spazi che funzionassero e architetture in cui ci si potesse identificare, facendo convivere “global” e “local”.

Come dice il Filarete, nel suo Trattato d’architettura del 1464, ogni buona architettura ha un padre: il signore dell’edificio, il committente, e una madre: l’architetto.

Nel nostro caso il chiaro programma industriale, ma anche l’interesse per l’architettura e per l’arte di Paolo Rocca, CEO del Gruppo Techint, sono stati un drive essenziale. È dunque a Paolo, come “coautore filaretiano” più che come “cliente classico”, che vanno i nostri ringraziamenti.

his book is an anthology of the work undertaken over twenty years for the Techint Group, in particular for Tenaris and Ternium, the two “steel” companies that manufacture respectively steel tubes and long and flat rolled products. This was an extraordinary professional and human experience, because it followed the businesses’ transition from local concern (Argentina) to global players with manufacturing centres around the world (United States, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Italy, China, Japan, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia).

As architects, we have tried to provide this amazingly expanding business with spaces that would work and architecture with which people could identify, so that “global” and “local” could go hand in hand.

As Filarete says in his 1464 Trattato d’architettura (Treatise on architecture), all good architecture has both a father – the lord of the building or client – and a mother – the architect.

In this instance the essential “drivers” were both a clear industrial programme and an interest in architecture and art on the part of Paolo Rocca, CEO of Techint Group. It is therefore to Paolo that we give our thanks, more as “co-author” (in the Filarete sense) than as “traditional client”.

comparsa progressivamente dagli orizzonti urbani, dove sopravvivono solo rari esoscheletri, da diversi decenni la fabbrica è scomparsa anche dai discorsi – quindi dai libri – degli architetti. Rari i testi di taglio tipologico, scarne o eccezionali le esperienze monografiche.

Il mondo della produzione è passato nel frattempo dalla condizione di modernità della macchina alla postmodernità dell’automa e alle successive declinazioni nel virtuale, spingendoci a credere in un mondo di flussi immateriali e di produzioni talmente atomizzate o lontane da non riuscire a costituirsi come oggetto di discussione disciplinare.

Oggi, che sembra riaffermarsi la centralità dell’economia reale, si parla di re-industrializzazione, di “rinascimento industriale”: l’industria è di nuovo considerata un’opportunità per il futuro, ovviamente secondo nuovi paradigmi di produzione, distribuzione e consumo.

Riprendiamo dunque a discutere dei luoghi fisici in cui questa produzione avviene.

Innanzitutto: di cosa parliamo quando parliamo di fabbrica?

La fabbrica, mondo e luogo fisico della produzione, è stata innanzitutto il laboratorio fondamentale della temporalità e della spazialità moderne dalla Rivoluzione industriale in poi.

actories have gradually disappeared from urban perspectives, where only rare skeletal carcasses remain, but have also been absent from debate – and consequently from books – on architecture for several decades. Books on building types are rare and monographs scant or uncommon.

In the meantime, the world of manufacturing has changed in status from the modernity of the machine to the post-modernity of the robot and subsequent virtual versions, prompting us to believe in a world of immaterial processes and manufacturing that is so automated or remote as to be incapable of establishing itself as a field of study or debate.

Today, when the central importance of the real economy seems to have been reasserted, there is talk of re-industrialisation and of “industrial renaissance”; industry is once again seen as an opportunity for the future, naturally according to new models of production, distribution and consumption.

Let us continue, then, discussing the actual sites where this production is taking place.

First of all, what do we mean when we talk about a factory? The factory, as the realm of manufacturing and its physical location, was in the first place a basic laboratory

Oggi è ancora la “magnifica primizia del nostro tempo”, l’icona estetica, come vaticinava Le Corbusier in Vers une architecture, o si esaurisce nell’ambito della sua funzione di perfetta macchina produttiva, come sottolineava Albert Kahn?

O piuttosto si è trasformata in qualcosa di molto più complesso?

A giudicare dai progetti presentati in questo libro – circa quaranta facenti capo a una decina di stabilimenti produttivi – la fabbrica sembrerebbe diventata, sulla scia della strada pioniera inaugurata in Italia da Adriano Olivetti, una vera e propria città sociale: dotata di laboratori, centri studi, servizi, spazi di ricreazione e di relazione con il pubblico e con il paesaggio, nei quali l’architettura interviene al meglio con il suo bagaglio di competenze tecniche e culturali. Competenze che trovano applicazione anche negli edifici destinati a ospitare gli impianti di produzione (qui i laminatoi), la cui pianta è indiscutibilmente e funzionalmente determinata dal percorso del flusso produttivo, finalmente però “reso visibile”, cioè rivelato nella dimensione spettacolare del processo.

E qui l’altra questione: come può rivelarsi utile l’esperienza di uno studio di progettazione che da decenni si confronta con le questioni, sempre più articolate e sofisticate, legate alla progettazione industriale?

Albert Kahn, titolare di uno studio che ha accompagnato il grande sviluppo dell’industria americana (e anche di quella sovietica), prevede dapprima un modello edilizio per ogni settore di prodotto. Si dedica quindi alla produzione manualistica e alla redazione di principi operativi utili per definire un approccio progettuale standardizzato. Questo gli consente l’enunciazione di principi validi per tutte le produzioni industriali, dal settore automobilistico a quello alimentare.

Lontano dalla presunzione manualistica di un funzionalismo fuori tempo, questo libro rappresenta l’occasione per mettere ordine a esperienze sviluppate in diverse parti del mondo – Europa, Nord e Sud America, Asia – illustrando le occasioni di progetto con un approccio sistematico al problema.

Con la convinzione che, pur rispettando i vincoli del rendimento e dell’economia “una fabbrica può uscire dagli schemi razionali di valore universale e cercare di assolvere a un più elevato compito umano attingendo dall’ambiente, dal clima, dalla struttura del luogo in cui dovrà sorgere le ispirazioni per la composizione di ogni dettaglio, della sua struttura e della sua forma, negli spazi interni ed esterni dove gli uomini i quali operano per quel determinato compito si associano o si isolano per espletare le proprie mansioni” (Luigi Cosenza a proposito della fabbrica Olivetti a Pozzuoli, 1955).

Is it still today the “magnificent novelty of our time”, the aesthetic icon, as prophesied by Le Corbusier in Vers une architecture or has it completed its role as perfect production machine, as emphasised by Albert Kahn?

Alternatively, has it become something much more complex?

Judging by the projects presented in this book – about forty in number, belonging to ten or so manufacturing establishments – the factory would seem to have followed the pioneering path struck in Italy by Adriano Olivetti and become a real social city, equipped with laboratories, research centres, services and spaces for recreation and contact with the public and with its landscape, to which architecture contributes in the best way possible with its wealth of technical and cultural expertise. This expertise is also relevant to buildings designed to accommodate manufacturing facilities (in this case rolling-mills), whose layout is unquestionably and functionally determined by the manufacturing processes, which are finally “made visible” however, i.e. revealed in the spectacular scale of the process.

Here, then, is the next question: how can the experience of a design practice, which, for decades, has dealt with the increasingly detailed and sophisticated issues related to industrial design, prove useful?

Albert Kahn, head of a practice involved with the rapid growth of American (as well as Soviet) industry, initially foresees a building model for all product sectors. He is therefore devoting himself to production manuals and the preparation of operating principles that will help define a standardised design approach. This enables him to expound principles that apply to all manufacturing sectors, from automotive to food.

Far from the manualistic presumption of an out-ofdate functionalism, this book is an opportunity to bring some order to experiences gained in different parts of the world – Europe, North and South America and Asia – illustrating design opportunities with a systematic approach to the problem.

This is in the belief that, while respecting the constraints of efficiency and economy, “a factory can break the rationalist mould of universal value and try to fulfil a superior human task, drawing on the environment, climate and structure of the place from which inspiration should spring for the composition of every detail, structure and shape in the indoor and outdoor spaces where people work, together or in isolation, to perform their duties on that particular task” (Luigi Cosenza on the subject of the Olivetti factory in Pozzuoli, 1955).

_ Quando Tenaris acquistò Silcotub, la Romania stava entrando nel periodo delle liberalizzazioni, nel campo politico come in quello economico. La città più vicina, Zalau, era molto povera sia dal punto di vista economico che da quello culturale.

Il programma per il centro di formazione includeva la richiesta per un auditorio per 200 persone, che potesse essere usato anche da parte della comunità per eventi culturali. Questa istanza è sottolineata anche dall’architettura: il nuovo edificio è infatti un grande tetto per accogliere l’intera comunità. Le facciate in Uglass che seguono la forma della copertura e un sistema d’illuminazione adeguato assicurano la perfetta visibilità di questa intenzione anche durante la notte.

_ When Tenaris bought Silcotub, Rumania was just getting into the process of both economic and political liberalization. The closest city, Zalau, was extremely poor, both under an economic and a cultural point of view. The guidelines for the Training Center included the possibility for the Auditorium for 200 persons to be used also by the local community for cultural events. This is underlined also by the architectural design: the new building is a big roof to host the whole community. The U-glass facades, which follow the roof shape, with appropriate lighting, assure a full visibility of the intention also at night-time.

_ La nuova centrale si trova all’interno di un’acciaieria, prossima a una monumentale centrale elettrica degli anni Trenta – dismessa, ma ancora in ottimo stato. Era nostro desiderio che la nuova centrale, seppur usando materiali molto meno nobili di mattone e pietra, continuasse la tradizione di attenzione estetica che connotava anche gli edifici industriali dell’epoca. Abbiamo quindi prestato molta cura alla chiarezza stereometrica dei volumi del complesso, all’impiego dei colori distintivi dell’azienda alla scala dell’intero edificio, e al controllo delle facciate legato all’inserimento, all’interno dell’edificio, dei necessari volumi accessori.

_ The new power plant is inside a steel mill industrial area, close to the former ’30’s power plant, dismissed but in relatively good shape, and very monumental. The new power plant project wants, even using less noble materials than bricks and stone, to continue that tradition of esthetical care that connotated even industrial buildings in that period. We consequently gave utmost attention to elements such as: stereometric clarity of volumes, corporate colour-palette applied at buildings’ scale, control of facades by placing inside the building all functional supplementary volumes.

_ Il gruppo è stato promotore per la ristrutturazione dell’edificio ed è main sponsor per l’attività corrente di mostre, concerti, conferenze, formazione. Oltre a un mecenatismo classico si è sviluppata un’interessante attività di connessione di Proa con varie istituzioni e realtà culturali di paesi dove il gruppo è presente (Italia, Messico, Stati Uniti). Con Proa il gruppo Techint ha quindi creato un epicentro argentino di un’attività più diffusa, di sostegno e sviluppo della cultura contemporanea, con quella commistione di elemen-

ti “locali e globali” che caratterizza anche la sua attività industriale. La Fundación Proa per l’Arte Contemporanea si trova alla Boca, uno dei più antichi quartieri di Buenos Aires, di fronte al porto antico e a uno degli ultimi ponti “traghettatori” del mondo. Il centro occupa tre lotti di terreno a uso misto (commerciale al piano terreno, residenziale al primo piano) costruiti alla fine dell’Ottocento. Nel rapporto tra conservazione e innovazione, evidente quando s’introducono nuove funzioni in un contesto storico, il momento più si-

gnificativo è quello della scelta degli elementi di continuità e quelli di discontinuità. Occorreva disegnare una sede riconoscibile per l’istituzione, più alta di un piano, per necessità funzionali, degli edifici precedenti e circostanti, senza distruggere la qualità urbana del waterfront con un intervento fuori scala. La qualità del waterfront era data dal susseguirsi delle diverse facciate, derivante dal disegno dei lotti edificabili. Abbiamo deciso di dare continuità a questo carattere. L’edificio centrale, in stile “italiano”, aveva una bella fac-

_ The Techint group promoted the building renovation and is the main sponsor of the current exhibitions, concerts, conferences and training activities. Besides a classic patronage Proa has developed an interesting network with various institutions and cultural bodies of the countries where the group is present (Italy, Mexico, United States). The foundation has therefore created an Argentinean epicentre for supporting and developing contemporary culture, with that mixture of local and global elements that characterizes

its industrial activity. The Fundación Proa for Contemporary Art is located in La Boca, an ancient barrio in Buenos Aires, facing the city’s historic earliest harbour and one of the world’s last ferry bridges. The Art Centre takes the place of three old mixed use buildings (commercial on ground floor, residential on the second floor) built in the late 1890s. As always when introducing new functions in a historical context, the dialogue between conservation and innovation is the unifying thread and the moment of choosing the ele-

ments of continuity and discontinuity is the most delicate. The main theme of this project was to design a single home for the institution building, one story higher than the previous three buildings, without destroying the urban quality of the waterfront with an outsize addition.

The quality of the waterfront depended on the alternation of the different facades deriving from the design of the original urban lots and we chose to give continuity to this character. The central building, in Italianate “classical” style, had a

beautiful white facade, while the two buildings on either side had a less formal design and had suffered from more extensive alteration over the years. Preserving the original historical facade in the central building and designing contemporary transparent facades for the lateral buildings would keep the previous alternating rhythm, as well as the unity required by the new institution. This individuation of the original urban lots through the facades is continued into the interiors, where we rebuilt the disrupted buildings,

conserving the characters of their different plans: the central lot has an interesting triangular shape, the left hand lot is a peculiar banana shape, while the right-hand lot has a more regular trapezium shape. The continuity of physical perception of this tripartite arrangement of the origin of the lots even inside a unit like the new Art Centre was our goal and the best manifesto of how we think it necessary to insert new needs in a historical context.
