Tournament times are the best of times

Of course it is every kid’s dream to one day play in the Minnnesota State High School Tournament. It is one of the greatest amateur tournaments in the country.

There certainly is something magical about the state high school tourney, but there is something “special” about every tournament kids get to experience.

I grew up playing hockey in the Tartan Youth Hockey Association. Some of, if not my fondest memories from back then, was packing up for a weekend out of town tourney.

It wasn’t so much about chasing trophies as it was being able to spend time off the ice with the guys who for six months become your brothers...your family.

Back in the 80s instead of getting grab bags full of goodies we got patches for our jackets. The coolest patches of course were the hat trick and playmaker patches, but most jackets were splattered with patches from various tournaments around the state.

In addition to patches we’d receive pins. It’s great seeing pin trading making a comeback in youth hockey (lets bring back the patches!)

We’d always bring our pin towels with us to trade with kids from other teams. Some of these kids we knew from playing summer hockey and others we met because we crossed paths at tournaments.

Of course sometimes the trash talking would start, but it was all part of the fun.

And there was never a tournament where a knee hockey game didn’t break out in the hallway. Back then we didn’t bring video game consoles with us. We had to spend dad’s money on the pool arcade games. When that ran out it was either pool time or knee hockey time.

The knee hockey games usually broke out later and would end when someone would call the front desk after a tennis ball bounced off their door one too many times.

Then it was curfew and lights out time. Oh man, the conversations we had during those nights when the lights turned off and we were all wide awake at midnight still full of pizza and pop and still had an 8 a.m. puck drop... those memories make me smile.

And who can forget the dreaded ride home, especially if it was a way out-of -towner. It usually resulted in a nice nap while we cringed at the thought of having to go back to school the next day.

As you can see in this issue of Let’s Play Hockey we pay homage to dozens of associations in our seasonal tournament calendar where associations promote their tourneys in our pages.

It’s a joy to work with tournament coordinators who put a lot of time and effort into not just filling the tournaments, but making sure the penalty box and concession stand are staffed and everything runs smoothly.

I served as a tournament coordinator years ago when my oldest son was in hockey, and it was my job to confront any unruly fans. There was always at least one and they usually weren’t very sober. It’s a lot of work so I commend those who volunteer to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.

Tournaments are also important fundraisers for associations to help keep costs down for families. But most importantly they are just fun.

As a parent I looked forward to sitting around the lobby chatting with fellow parents after games as our kids ran around doing who knows what.

As a player it was just fun to be with the guys, like we were all living in the same house for the weekend. Back then we were all convinced we would some day play for the Gophers and then the North Stars or Edmonton Oilers.

Almost 40 years later those same

teammates I shared the ice with are still close friends. We text almost daily.

I couldn’t tell you how many tournaments we won. By the time I was in high school all those trophies and medals were stowed away in a box somewhere. I have no idea what ever happened to them.

What I do know is that even though we were chasing trophies as kids, we were really chasing memories - the pin trading, the knee hockey games, the pool time, and the laughter late at night during those weird conversations when the lights were off.

As we put together this issue it struck me how each and every tournament listed is going to create a fun and exciting experience not just for the kids, but for their families.

The competitive juices will flow and some kids will bring home some hardware and others won’t. But nobody comes home empty handed. They never do.

That’s because in the end, trophies and medals gather dust. They get taken down, put away and forgotten about.

But the memories, and the relationships we make along the way, stay on the heart forever.

Minnesota Hockey, an affiliate of USA Hockey, is the governing body of youth and amateur hockey in Minnesota and the premier developer of hockey players in the state. With over 67,000 registered players and coaches, it is the largest state governing body for amateur hockey in the United States.

Why this DI coach wants Minnesota players

by STEVE MANN No matter the field, sometimes getting an outsider’s perspective can shine a light on what’s working, what’s not and lead to fresh, new ways of thinking and doing things. When that outsider was also once an insider, that point of view comes with a unique credibility.

On the subject of the “Minnesota model,” University of Vermont men’s hockey head coach Todd Woodcroft is one of those highly respected insider-outsiders. Woodcroft grew up in hockey-crazed Toronto and has led the Catamounts the last two seasons in Burlington. In between, one of Woodcroft’s career stops was a five-year stint in St. Paul with the expansion Minnesota Wild, for which he served as video coach and a scout, among other roles.

His years in Minnesota established a deep respect for the State of Hockey – both the passion fans have for the game, and the approach to youth player development and the community-based model, which are often touted as standards for programs across the country.

“I didn’t know anything about Minnesota hockey when I got here,” he said. “I was a fan of the North Stars, so

If there’s WiFi in the rink, games results are automatically streamed live back to League, Event or Association websites.

The GameSheet Scoring App makes busy hockey lives easier by automating the process of collecting game results, computing standings and compiling year over year stats direct from the scorekeeper’s booth. The solution eliminates the need for volunteers and league management to re-enter game data back into league/ team web sites and easily integrates into existing website platforms. The system automatically emails a signed digital copy of the score sheet to the Team Manager and Coach immediately after the game.

I remembered those great teams in the 1980s – Payne, Christoff, Giles, Broten – that was my first impression of Minnesota hockey.

“Then you get here and walk around the Xcel Energy Center and see all the high school jerseys, and you quickly realize there’s a rich hockey culture here with strong traditions, similar to what I experienced in Toronto. The tradition isn’t just about the professional team. Fans celebrate the college teams and the high school teams and women’s and girls’ hockey.

It’s almost a more pure model of hockey development here because the focus is really on the amateurs.”

Commitment to the Game When people in the game talk about Minnesota and what sets its hockey culture apart, what is often mentioned are things like opportunity, access to ice, community investment, six Division I men’s and women’s college teams, an incredibly supportive NHL squad and a high school state tournament scene that is unlike any other in the country.

Hard Ice divider program surpasses 100 sets

Minnesota Hockey, in partnership with Rink Systems, Inc., is offering its Hard Ice Divider Program for the ninth consecutive season with applications going through August, 2022. The program has helped supply over 100 sets of dividers to 75 youth hockey associations in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Hockey Hard Ice Divider Program was designed to aid community-based associations and their home rinks in promoting the growth of ice hockey through the implementation of cross and half-ice hockey, and it’s made a huge impact on the game throughout the state. Associations have utilized the boards to enhance a wide variety of age-appropriate programs include in-house mite and squirt programs, jamborees, tournaments and three-on-three or four-on-four leagues for older age groups.

Through the partnership, Rink Systems will also allow for associations that purchase hard ice dividers through the program to pur-

chase junior size goal frames at a discounted rate. Junior size goal frames provide a more realistic playing experience for young goaltenders, enabling them to gain confidence and passion for position.

Minnesota Hockey affiliated associations interested in purchasing a “hard divider” system must complete an online application

for the program and submit a deposit. Once approved, Minnesota Hockey associations will be able to purchase a set of boards, valued at $7,900, for just $5,400. Associations that take advantage of the hard ice divider subsidy will also be able to purchase the junior goal frames sets of two goal frames for $500, which are valued at $600.

Best Shift Hockey puts wheels in motion

A new hockey training facility has found a home in Eagan, Minn. and is looking to make a positive impact within the hockey community with its services.

Best Shift Hockey has established itself as a training facility where they welcome athletes of all ages and host various programs to help hockey players of any age hone their skills with an emphasis on using wheels for training during the summer months and throughout the hockey season.

Inline or “roller” hockey is popular on both the east and west coasts, and is used as a prime training technique to build better ice hockey players. It is growing in popularity in the Midwest and Minnesota.

The business began through the collaboration of GoodWood Hockey owner, Kelly O’Donnell, and professional inline hockey player, John Schiavo, creating the new brand: Best Shift Hockey.

“Bottom line – [we want to] grow the game. Expand access to training on wheels and put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces,” Schiavo said. “Best Shift Hockey isn’t just for roller hockey, it’s a place to become a more skilled hockey player.

There are three shooting lanes that can be rented individually for hour-long training. The entire rink can be rented by the hour for private, small group or team training by your coach or association. There is a gym, dozens of training tools, and games available for use with any shooting lane or rink rental.”

While ice hockey is predominant, the Minnesota Roller Hockey Association [Joe Dustin, White Bear Lake], and John Schiavo have been working diligently to shift the habits of hockey training in the region to inline skating, as well as grow the base of youth and adults playing competitive inline hockey in addition to, or, when appropriate, in place of ice hockey. With a growing market and grassroots movement, it has led to a demand for high quality training and organization for the game of roller hockey in this marketplace. The facility houses 140-square meters of indoor skating tile (this area is able to be utilized as a full skating area, or sectioned off for three

meters of fitness equipment and training with Olympic weights, machines, and a fitness cycle, amongst other training aids.

There is also 73-square meters of retail/ pro shop space.

O’Donnell and Schiavo want to promote their new facility as a place where organizations can work on team building

activities, have dryland practice and as a place that is inclusive of everyone. They host camps and clinics and are actively working to bring teams of all age groups to larger national tournaments during the summer months. There is still time to register for their July & August summer skills camps available for mite through bantam levels.

Schiavo, a still active ECHL athlete, hails from the east coast and hopes to bring his expertise in roller hockey and to training to Minnesota where there are more hockey players per capita than anywhere in the nation.

“The talent pool in Minnesota is enormous for hockey,” said O’Donnell. “Roller hockey is an environment for not only the top tier players to open up their training & improve their stick handling and skating skills, but also allows for anyone to come play hockey. Whether you’re at the Learn to Skate level, have never held a stick, want to play recreationally, or play on multiple travel teams...roller hockey & training on wheels can be for you.”

The pair has organized a weekly Wednesday Hockey Fun Night and families can register for it on online at www. bestshifttraining.com. O’Donnell has also helped put together a pre-school aged open playtime on Monday and Wednesday mornings in order to help expose youngsters to the game of hockey and create a fun environment for them.

“All activities can be attended on wheels or sneakers, unless noted otherwise,” O’Donnell said. “If you don’t have your own set of wheels, we have Marsblade 01 training skates for use as well.”

One of the biggest differences between ice and roller hockey is that roller is played four-on-four along with no icing or offsides, making it an extremely fast-paced game. These nuances between the two versions of games is something Schiavo hopes he can teach to kids at an early age.

“Shoulder pads aren’t really worn and we don’t wear hockey pants,” Schiavo said.

“We wear specific roller hockey pants. Obviously, the surface is a huge difference as well. Tournaments are played on a special tile similar to Sport Court but roller hockey can be played on smooth concrete or other court surfaces as well.”

Another goal O’Donnell and Schiavo are striving towards is to help enhance the popularity of the roller hockey community in Minnesota.

They have seen growth of the sport in other midwestern states and want to continue pushing that growth across the region as well.

“We aim to be a huge catalyst for the game.

Roller is already huge in the St. Louis area. Wisconsin and Iowa have also started growing the sport in the last decade as well,” Schiavo said. “It really only makes sense to reintroduce inline to the State of Hockey. I can tell you that I have heard an enormous amount of excitement from the national roller hockey community for Minnesota to become a powerhouse in roller hockey.”

Guentzel leads Minnesotans in NHL scoring

Pittsburgh penguins All-Star Jake Guentzel was the leading NHL scorer who hails from Minnesota.

Guentzel, a former Hill-Murray standout, finished the regular season with 40 goals and 44 assists for 84 points. He is the only Minnesotan to finish in the top 50 in the NHL in scoring.

Blake Wheeler (Plymouth, MN) was the second highest scorer for a Minnesotan, tallying 17 goals, 43 assists for 60 points. Wheeler played high school hockey at Breck and had a great college career for the Gophers.

Brock Nelson of Warroad finished third amongst Minnesotans in the NHL with 37 goals and 22 assists for 59 points.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk (South St. Paul) was fourth with 16 goals and 47 points.

Anders Lee (Edina) finished 2818-46 and Brock Boeser (Burnsville) finished with 23 goals and 23 assists for 46 points.

Buffalo’s Kyle Okposo (St. Paul) finished with 45 points (21g, 24a), and Rem Pitlick (Plymouth) finished 1522-37. Zach Parise (15-20-35), finished his first full season with the Islanders and ranks ninth amongst Minnesotans. Rounding out the top 10 is Travis Boyd, the Stanley Cup winner who played high school hockey at Hopkins and tallied 17 goals and 18 assists this season for Arizona. Boyd ranked 227th in the NHL in scoring.

In all, the 10 players combined to play 732 games, score 229 goals and 275 assists for 504 points. The 10 players in their combined careers have played 6,103 games and scored 1,760 goals and added 2,307 assists for 4,067 points.

Jake Guentzel, a product of Hill-Murray High School, led all former Minnesota players in NHL scoring this season with 84 points. He was also an NHL All-Star.

60 players invited to National Junior Evaluation Camp Roster includes 12 players from Minnesota

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey announced today the 60 players invited to participate in its National Junior Evaluation Camp, set for July 24-August 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich.

“It’s going to be a unique camp as we evaluate players for our National Junior Teams that will be competing in the August and December World Junior Championships,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, general manager of the U.S. National Junior Team and assistant ex-

ecutive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. “We’ve got two great coaching staffs assembled, and with the deep player pool we have, there will be tough decisions to be made.”

The 2022 U.S. National Junior Team will play in the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship August 9-20 in Edmonton, Alberta, and the final 23-player roster is expected to be announced by August 3. The tournament was originally scheduled for Dec. 26, 2021 Jan. 5, 2022, in Edmonton and Red

Deer, Alberta, but was canceled due to COVID. The roster for the 2023 U.S. National Junior Team, which will play in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2022 - Jan. 5, 2023, in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick, is expected to be announced in mid-December.

A total of 21 states are represented among the 60 invited players, comprised of 35 forwards, 20 defensemen and five goaltenders.

Most recently, the U.S. earned gold at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship, its fifth top-of-the-podium finish in the event. The U.S. has claimed 13 total medals in the World Juniors, including five gold (2021, 2017, 2013, 2010, 2004), two silver (2019, 1997) and six bronze (2018, 2016, 2011, 2007, 1992, 1986).

U.S. Takes Home Silver at 2022 U18 Women’s Worlds

MADISON, Wis. – The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team earned silver at the 2022 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship after a 3-2 loss to Canada in the gold-medal game here tonight at LaBahn Arena.

“We had a little bit of a slow start and we knew it was going to be a tough game,” head coach Katie Lachapelle said. “We weren’t really consistent at the start but we certainly picked it up but just couldn’t get that last one in.”

Canada put the first goal on the board off a redirection on the power play, 5:35 into the first period. Danielle Burgen (Lindstrom, Minn.) nearly tied things up moments later, after a cascading puck fell to her stick in the slot for a point blank try, but Canadian netminder Mari Pietersen blocked it aside. With 2:20 to go in the first, Laila Edwards (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) split two Canadians and put one on net and created a rebound opportunity for Tessa Janecke (Orangeville, Ill.) at the doorstep. Janecke almost found the back of net, however, Pietersen got a pad on it to keep it 1-0.

The U.S. came out for the second period quick, as Janecke blasted a one-timer towards the net in the opening minute before Pietersen made the save. U.S. goaltender Annelies Bergmann (Detroit, Mich.) kept it a one-goal game under the halfway mark after a Canadian shot at the

top of the crease. A loose puck created a scramble in the crease but Bergmann eventually froze the puck.

Canada scored a pair of goals :56 seconds apart with under nine minutes to play in the second to extend its lead to three. Finley McCarthy (Whitefish, Mont.) put Team USA’s first goal on the board with 1:37 to play with an extra skater. As its power play was winding down, McCarthy skated around towards the blue line and opened up her own lane for an open shot and the goal. Laney Potter (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Madison Kaiser (Andover, Minn.) picked up assists on the goal.

Just :07 seconds later, off the ensuing faceoff, the U.S. netted one more to cut it back to a one-goal game. Ava Lindsay (Minnetonka, Minn.) picked up the faceoff and sent one on net as Claire Enright (Lakeville, Minn.) crashed the net and buried the rebound to make it 3-2 after 40.

Team USA put the pressure on early in the third and rattled off a handful of shots to force Pietersen to make a few tough saves. Played continued back and forth through the third, with each team contributing multiple scoring opportunities. Bergmann made two crucial saves with under 6:20 to go, one of which was at the top of the crease, to keep it 3-2. Jacecke almost potted one with less than

Twelve returning NCHC players named to U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp Roster COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) will be well-represented at Team USA’s upcoming National Junior Evaluation Camp, as 17 players with NCHC ties are among the 60 skaters invited to the camp by USA Hockey on Tuesday.

Among the 17, 12 are returning NCHC standouts from six different teams, while four are incoming freshmen and one is a former NCHC player.

U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp will take place from July 24-Aug. 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich. The NCHC players will be competing for one of 23 spots on the final 2022 U.S. National Junior Team roster, which is expected to be announced by Wednesday, Aug. 3.

The rescheduled 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place Aug. 9-20 in Edmonton, Alta. It was originally scheduled for Dec. 26, 2021-Jan. 5, 2022 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, but was postponed only a few days into the tournament due to COVID-19.

Only months later, the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place from Dec. 26, 2022-Jan. 5, 2023 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick. The 2023 U.S. National Junior Team roster will be announced in mid-December.

Six of eight NCHC teams will be represented at the National Junior Evaluation Camp, led by four skaters each from Denver (all returning players), Minnesota Duluth (three returning, one incoming) and North Dakota (two returning, two incoming). Rising junior forward Hunter McKown and incoming freshman goaltender Kaidan Mbereko will represent Colorado College at the camp, while St. Cloud State rising sophomore blue liner Jack Peart and Miami rising sophomore forward Red Savage will also take part. Those six are UMD rising sophomore forward Dominic James, UMD rising junior blue liner Wyatt Kaiser, UND rising junior defenseman Tyler Kleven, Denver rising sophomore forward Carter Mazur, SCSU’s Peart and Miami’s Savage. Kleven was also on the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team that won gold at the last completed World Junior Championship.

Among the 12 returning NCHC players attending camp, six are forwards and six are defensemen. Among the four newcomers, three are forwards and one is a goaltender. Among the 60 U.S. camp invitees, 35 are forwards, 20 are blueliners and five are netminders. Nine of the 12 returning NCHC players have already been drafted by the NHL, while three are draft eligible. Of the four NCHC newcomers, two are drafted and two are undrafted so far.

Along with the 16 returning and incoming NCHC players (listed below), former Minnesota Duluth defenseman Connor Kelley (2020-22) was also invited to Evaluation Camp.

The U.S. National Junior Team are the defending champions, winning gold at the 2021 World Junior Championship, which included Kleven, former UND defenseman Jake Sanderson and former Denver forward Bobby Brink.

Quinnipiac’s Pecknold to coach U.S. National Junior squad in 2023 Rand Pecknold recently finished his 28th season as head coach of the Quinnipiac University men’s ice hockey program and guided his team to a 32-7-3 overall record in 2021-22, the school’s eighth NCAA tournament appearance and its sixth ECAC Hockey regular-season title. Pecknold, who was the Spencer Penrose Award recipient as the top coach in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey in 2016, has a record of 581-333100 and ranks third among active NCAA Division I coaches in career victories.

He has twice been part of U.S. coaching staffs, including for the U.S. Men’s National Team that competed in the 2017 IIHF Men’s World Championship and for the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team that earned a silver medal in the 2018 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship.

Pecknold began his storied career at Quinnipiac in 1994-95 when the team competed at the Division II level. He shepherded the school into its Division I era in 1998-99, leading the Bobcats to a then school-record 26 victories, with 18 additional 20-plus win campaigns to his credit since and also three seasons with 30 or more wins.

The four-time ECAC Hockey Tim Taylor Coach of the Year played hockey collegiately at Connecticut College (1986-90) where he earned both a bachelor’s degree in economics and master’s degree in education. He went on to serve three seasons (1991-94) as an assistant hockey coach for the school before taking over the head coaching reins at Quinnipiac.

Augustana officially joins CCHA

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) today announced the CCHA Board of Directors has voted unanimously to welcome Augustana University as the league’s ninth member.

We are very pleased to welcome Augustana University into the CCHA,” said CCHA Board of Directors Chair and Bemidji State University President Dr. Faith Hensrud. “The commitment Augustana University has to academic excellence mirrors that of all the teams in the CCHA and will add to our overall excellence as a league.”

Located in the heart of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Augustana University athletics is home to five team NCAA National Championships while competing primarily in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Having won four national championships since 2010, the Vikings have shown broad-based athletics excellence by finishing in the top-20 of the Division II Learfield Director’s Cup standings in eight of the last nine years. In the classroom, Augustana has consistently led the NSIC in All-Academic honorees and tallied 44 Academic All-America honors over the past 10 years.

Augustana University will be a full voting member immediately and begin a transitional schedule, playing 16 games (one series against each member) in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons before playing a full league schedule beginning with the 2025-26 season.

Garrett Raboin, assistant coach for the University of Minnesota of the Big Ten Conference, has been selected to be the inaugural head coach of the Viking Hockey Program — set to take the ice in the 2023-24 academic year.

“This is a great day for Augustana University and an incredibly important step in the launch of Viking Hockey,” said Augustana President Stephanie Herseth Sandlin. “Garrett Raboin brings a passion for the game and genuine enthusiasm for the broader vision that will be energizing for all of us as we build toward our first year of competition in 2023. We are thrilled to welcome Garrett, Emily and their children to Augustana and the Sioux Falls community.”

“We started this process looking for someone who can build a nationally competitive men’s hockey program that competes at Division I and we sure found him,” Morton said. “Garrett is a proven winner, excellent recruiter and will help us build community excitement for Augustana Hockey. He is a great addition and will add to the excellence of Augustana athletics.”

Raboin will be introduced at a press conference Tuesday, April 19, at 2 p.m., inside the University Welcome Center on Augustana’s campus. The press conference is open to the public and will be live-streamed on the Augustana Athletics YouTube page.

2022 Hockey Director Conference Set for September 9-11

Minnesota Hockey announced it will host a statewide Hockey Director Conference on September 9-11 at the Marriott Minneapolis West in St. Louis Park, Minn. The conference, which is designed for hockey directors, player and coach development leaders in youth hockey associations, will provide in-depth training on the techniques and principles that guide world class hockey development programs.

Participants will learn how to best structure their association and offer the most efficient and effective

practices for player development through presentations and group discussions. Topics are expected to include best practices for implementing long term athlete development principles, teaching body contact and checking, off-ice training and much more. Adoption of the principles will lead to enhanced skill mastery, growth and retention and players having more fun.

“The Hockey Director Conference is a prime opportunity to learn and network about player development topics and best practic-

es for running the hockey-side of your youth association,” said Jacob Mars, Hockey Director Coordinator. “The community associations in Minnesota are led by extremely knowledgeable and passionate volunteers, and we’re thrilled to work in partnership with USA Hockey to support and enhance their dedicated efforts.”

The conference will feature local and national presenters, including members of USA Hockey’s American Development Model regional manager team.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring together player development leaders from across the state for this event,” said Jeremy Reed, Vice President of Hockey Operations. “The on-ice experience our coaches and hockey development teams provide plays a critical role in making Minnesota a leader in participation, retention and high performance, and this conference assists us in continuing to raise that high standard to even greater heights.”

In addition to those aspects, what stands out to Woodcroft may be summed up in one word: commitment.

It’s a commitment to development, a commitment to great coaching and a commitment to community that makes the Minnesota model so special.

“The enjoyment of the amateur game here is sincere, and there’s a genuine appreciation of the game,” he said. “Kids understand the ultimate is to play for your hometown, your high school and make the tourney. You can sit in any watering hole and hear people talk about great players and great tournament memories of the past.

Celebrating the Community-based Model According to Woodcroft, the community-based model works so well in Minnesota because it’s about the community supporting teams and individual players, and those players in turn caring about representing their hometowns and learning how to carry themselves and treat people off the ice as well – in school and in the community.

“It’s more than just being fans, it’s financial support and emotional support as well,” he says. “These are young boys and girls who have chosen to play a game. It will be rewarding to them, but if you don’t have that village

of people who care about them, I don’t think they’ll have as much fun or as much success.

“You go to places like Roseau or Virginia or Eveleth or Hermantown, they know the players. They take care of the players. And I love that. That’s why growth of the game is so strong.

These players who move up have little brothers and sisters that want to be just like their older siblings and have the

same experience.”

Minnesota-born Players Respected Woodcroft’s belief in the Minnesota model is evidenced by Vermont’s roster. In his first season, the roster he inherited didn’t have any Minnesotans.

Two players from the state (Robbie Stucker/St. Paul and Luke Mountain/ Woodbury) were on his Vermont roster in 2021-22, with more players (Alex

Bump/Prior Lake, Ryder Donovan/Duluth, Max Strand/Roseau) committed to join the program soon.

“I don’t have enough Minnesota players – I need more,” Woodcroft said. “Celebrating college hockey and wanting to be part of it is in the DNA of the Minnesota player.”

New Jersey Titans win Robertson Cup BLAINE, MINNESOTA – Led by a 31-save shutout from goaltender Andrew Takacs in the Championship game, the New Jersey Titans won their first ever NAHL Robertson Cup National Championship as they blanked the Anchorage Wolverines by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday night at Fogerty Arena in Blaine, Minnesota. Titans forward Tommy Bannister, who had five points in four games during the event, was named the Most Valuable Player.

With so much on the line, the 1st period opened with both teams careful not to make any mistakes. As the period went on, the offensive chances ramped up, but Anchorage goalie Raythan Robbins and New Jersey goalie Andrew Takacs were equal to the task. New Jersey outshot Anchorage in the 1st period, 14-7.

The Titans ramped up the offense in the 2nd period as the netted the game’s first goal as a scramble in front led to an original save by Anchorage goalie Raythan Robbins. The rebound was collected by New Jersey and sent to the point, where Anthony Calafiore sent a pass to the side of the net to forward Brendan Dumas, who redirected a shot past Robbins to make it 1-0 for New Jersey. Less than three minutes later, the Titans made it 2-0 as Nick Rink created a turnover at the New Jersey blueline and chipped the puck ahead to Tommy Bannister. Bannister then got the puck back to Ring, who did the rest as he danced his way through traffic and beat a sprawled-out Robbins to make it 2-0 for the Titans.

The Titans killed off an early penalty in the 3rd period and any doubt about the outcome was erased when the Titans took a 3-0 lead as Anthony Calafiore scored his second goal of the event as he potted home a rebound after the initial shot by Brendan Dumas. Svenddal commits to Augustana The Wisconsin Windigo (formerly the Minnesota Magicians) are pleased to announce that defenseman Will Svenddal has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Augustana University in the CCHA. Svenddal, 20, just completed his second season playing in the NAHL, which was spent with the Magicians the past two seasons. The 6’0/195 lbs. native of Minneapolis, MN, had a solid season from the blueline, recording 30 points (3 goals, 27 assists) in 52 regular season games during the 2021-22 campaign.

Rochester’s Wiese commits to Gophers

Zach Wiese backstopped the Rochester Grizzlies to the 2021-22 Fraser Cup National Championship.

The Rochester Grizzlies of the NA3HL are pleased to announce that goaltender Zach Wiese has committed to play NCAA Division I Hockey at the University of Minnesota in the B1G. Wiese, 20, becomes the first Rochester Grizzlies player to commit to an NCAA Division 1 school.

Wiese, who was named the 202122 NA3HL Goaltender of the Year and named to the All-NA3HL 1st Team, fit right into the starting role for the Grizzlies during this past season and backstopped them to the Fraser Cup title. The 5’10/210 lbs. native of Owatonna, MN, put together a 20-2-2 record during the 2021-22 regular season. His 20 wins ranked 3rd in the NA3HL, while his goals against average of 1.70 ranked 4th.

During the Fraser Cup Playoffs, Wiese backstopped the Grizzlies to the title, which included a 29-save shutout in the title game.

“I am very honored and excit-

ed to announce my commitment to play hockey at the University of Minnesota,” stated Wiese. “I would like to thank my family, coaches, and teammates.”

In his two seasons with the Grizzlies, Wiese appeared in 51 career regular season and playoff games and sported a 40-7-3 record, .934 save percentage, and a 1.84 goalsagainst average.

into plays on the offensive end. His size also gives him a long reach to better defend against the rush. Rinzel was only a junior at Chaska last year and also played in the USHL for Waterloo. He is committed to play with the Gophers in 2023-24 where he can reunite with his old high school teammate Snuggerud.

Cruz Lucius (F) Rounding out the top five Minnesotans in the top 50 is last year’s first rounder Chaz Lucius’ little brother Cruz Lucius. Lucius was outside the top 50 during the midterm rankings, but jumped to 41 in the final ranking.

The 6-foot winger scored 42 points in 42 games for the US National U-17 squad before moving on to the NTDP last season where he tallied 18 points in 23 games. Lucius has been dubbed more of a playmaker, but has shown a knack for the net with an excellent shot. It is his offensive skill set that has some scouts projecting him as high as the second round.

Some other notables to look for on draft day are Prior Lake star Alex Bump, who ranks 63rd amongst North America skaters; Hermantown’s Zam Plante (64th); Benilde-St. Margaret defenseman Tristan Sarsland (67th); Hill-Murray defenseman Leo Gruba (125th) who just committed to St. Cloud State; Hill-Murray and Wisconsin-bound forward Dylan Godbout (129th) and former Hermantown standout defenseman Aaron Pionk (132nd) all came in the top 150 amongst North American skaters.

The last time Minnesota had multiple first-round picks was in 2017 when Casey Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie) went 8th overall and Ryan Poehling and Jake Oettinger (both of Lakeville) went 25th and 26th, respectively. All have since played substantially in the NHL. The 2017 draft was one of the best for Minnesota players with 17 chosen overall.

The highest pick for a Minnesota-born player was Bloomington native Erik Johnson in 2006, who was chosen first overall and is now playing in the Stanley Cup finals with Colorado.
