Coming back here for the first time in 45 years since my senior year in high school and playing media day on May 21st bought back so many memories, and playing on the hallowed grounds of Newport Country Club once again was special. I was able to stop along the way and stare at Ocean Drive and other scenic views throughout the course and just took it all in knowing I may never pass this way again, but the memories are etched in my mind forever. A special thanks to the USGA and Brian DePasquale for making this happen. –Joe

The Graduate Providence A Unique Blend of History and Modern Charm

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Staying at The Graduate Providence is more than just booking a room; it’s an invitation to step into a narrative that spans nearly a century. The hotel, originally known as the Biltmore Hotel, first opened its doors in 1922. Financed by Johan Leisse Weisskopf, an entrepreneurial figure who saw the potential for a grand establishment in Providence, the hotel quickly became a symbol of luxury and opulence. Its design, inspired by the grandeur of Beaux-Arts architecture, set it apart as an iconic structure in the city.

During its heyday, the Biltmore was more than just a hotel; it was a cultural hub that hosted celebrities, politicians, and dignitaries. Its rooftop garden and glass elevator offered guests panoramic views of Providence, a feature that added to its allure. The hotel’s Palm Court, with its distinctive glass ceiling, became a renowned venue for social gatherings, further cementing its status as a social cornerstone of the city.

However, the Biltmore’s journey hasn’t always been smooth. It faced numerous challenges, including economic downturns and changes in ownership. Despite these hurdles, the building has persevered, a testament to its architectural resilience and the enduring allure of its historical charm.

MODERN RENOVATIONS AND UNIQUE CHARACTER

In 2018, the hotel underwent a significant transformation when it was

rebranded as The Graduate Providence. This rebranding was more than a cosmetic makeover; it was a thoughtful effort to preserve the building’s historical essence while infusing it with a vibrant, contemporary spirit.

The Graduate Providence retains many of its original architectural features, such as the elegant marble columns and intricate moldings, but it has been revitalized with a design that pays homage to the city’s rich academic heritage. The hotel’s décor includes whimsical touches and nods to local culture, such as custom

art pieces and vintageinspired furniture, which create a charming blend of old and new.

Each room at The Graduate is a delightful experience of its own, combining modern amenities with quirky, personalized décor. From old-world chandeliers to playful wallpapers and custom-designed furniture, every detail has been thoughtfully curated to create an inviting and unique atmosphere that stands apart from the typical hotel experience.

Guests can explore the nearby Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum, renowned for its extensive collection of fine and decorative arts, or take a leisurely stroll to the historic Roger Williams Park. The bustling Federal Hill neighborhood, known for its vibrant Italian heritage and delicious cuisine, is also within walking distance.

For those interested in the arts, Providence’s theater district is a stone’s throw away, featuring venues like the Providence Performing Arts Center and Trinity Repertory Company, where visitors can enjoy a range of performances from Broadway shows to experimental theater.

Additionally, the city’s picturesque WaterFire event, a series of bonfires installed on the rivers that run through downtown, provides a mesmerizing backdrop for an evening out. The Graduate’s central location allows guests to immerse themselves in these cultural experiences with ease.

COMMITMENT TO HOSPITALITY

The Graduate Providence is not just a place to stay; it’s a place to feel at home. The staff is renowned for their warm hospitality and attention to detail, ensuring that every guest feels welcomed and valued. Whether it’s providing personalized recommendations for exploring the city or accommodating special requests, the hotel’s team goes above and beyond to enhance the guest experience.

The Graduate also prides itself on creating a sense of community within the hotel. The lobby, often referred to as the “living room,” is a vibrant space where guests can relax, socialize, or even catch up on some work. It’s a place where the historic meets the contemporary, creating an ambiance that is both cozy and stimulating.

CONCLUSION

Coastal Romance Blossoms At The Shore House A Seaside Hallmark Love Story In Narragansett Rhode Island

On a recent visit, I found The Shore House to be charming, quaint, with a laid back casual feel of a Hallmark Movie and a beautiful ocean view of Narragansett Beach across the street that puts you somewhere else in time. Most people visiting the New England area have heard of Newport as the premier destination in Rhode Island. But just a short 30 minutes away is a gem of a beach town called Narragansett– rich in history, that is second to none when visiting beautiful Rhode Island, and I highly recommend a stay at The Shore House.

Built in 1901, The Shore House is a historic establishment that has played a significant role in the town’s maritime and cultural heritage. This picturesque venue, which combines a hotel and a restaurant, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, reflecting the evolving landscape and community of Narragansett.

EARLY BEGINNINGS AND 19TH CENTURY

Narragansett, located along the scenic coast of Rhode Island, became a popular summer resort destination in the late 1800s, attracting wealthy families from cities like Boston and New York. The Shore House was originally constructed during this period, likely in the 1880s, as part of the broader development boom that sought to capitalize on the town’s natural beauty and proximity to the ocean. The original structure served as a summer retreat for affluent guests seeking a respite from the heat and bustle of urban life.

The architectural style of The Shore House, like many of the buildings from that era, reflected the grandiose and ornate designs favored by the wealthy

elite. Its Victorian-style architecture, complete with intricate woodwork and expansive porches, made it an iconic landmark along the Narragansett coastline.

20TH CENTURY TRANSFORMATION

Throughout the early 20th century, The Shore House continued to operate as a prominent seaside hotel, drawing tourists with its stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and its reputation for luxury. However, the Great Depression and World War II led to a decline in the popularity of such resorts, and The Shore House, like many similar establishments, faced financial challenges.

In the post-war era, the property underwent several transformations. By the mid-20th century, it had shifted from being an exclusive hotel to a more accessible destination, catering to a broader audience including middle-class families. The evolution of the tourism industry, combined with changes in transportation and leisure trends, meant that The Shore House needed to adapt to survive.

OWNERSHIP AND RENOVATIONS

Ownership of The Shore House has changed hands numerous times over the years. Each new owner brought their

vision and attempts to modernize and restore the historic property. By the late 20th century, the building had begun to show signs of wear, necessitating significant renovations to preserve its historical integrity while updating it to meet contemporary standards.

In the 1980s and 1990s, The Shore House saw substantial investments aimed at revitalizing the property. Efforts were made to restore the building’s exterior to its former glory while updating the interiors to provide modern amenities for guests. These renovations helped to solidify The Shore House’s reputation as a premier destination in Narragansett.

21ST CENTURY AND CURRENT OWNERSHIP

In recent years, The Shore House has continued to thrive under the new ownership of TPG Hotel & Resorts reflecting a renewed interest in preserving historic properties while making them appealing to modern tourists. The current owners, who acquired the property in the have undertaken extensive renovations to enhance the guest experience while maintaining the historical character of the building. As General Manager Ali Bonsignore noted “renovations were done in 2019 and will undergo a soft remodel this winter”. There are nine main rooms in the Main Inn and another twenty-one rooms behind the main inn.

The Shore House now operates as both a hotel and a restaurant, offering visitors a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary comfort. The restaurant Seacraft, which has become a popular dining destination in Narragansett, serves a variety of dishes that highlight local seafood and ingredients, emphasizing the coastal heritage of the region. Seacraft restaurant is also very relaxing, quaint and elegant casual with great food and a great wine selection that you don’t even have to leave the property to dine.

CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

Beyond its role as a tourist destination, The Shore House has played an integral part in the local community of Narragansett. It has hosted numerous events, from weddings to community gatherings, and remains a symbol of the

town’s historical and cultural identity. The property’s continued operation and preservation efforts underscore the importance of maintaining historical landmarks, not just as relics of the past but as vibrant components of the community’s present and future.

The Shore House that is open from April - October and the restaurant year round stands as a testament to Narragansett’s rich history and enduring

appeal, offering both residents and visitors a glimpse into the town’s past while providing a welcoming retreat on the beautiful Rhode Island coast. TSG
